Sri Lanka, after gaining a big 220-run lead in the first innings, were struggling at 34-5 at close on the third day of the second day-night Test against Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday.

Dinesh Chandimal was dismissed for nought in the last over before close, with Kusal Mendis not out on five.

Sri Lanka, who lead the two-match series 1-0, have an overall lead of 254 runs with five wickets intact.

Earlier, Pakistan were bowled out for 262 in their first innings on the third day.

Azhar Ali (59) and Haris Sohail (56) were the leading scorers as Pakistan fell 21 runs short of the follow-on mark, although Sri Lanka decided not to enforce it.

Herath, who took 11 wickets in Sri Lanka's 21-run win in the first Test in Abu Dhabi, removed a well set Azhar Ali for 59 after he dismissed Babar Azam for eight.

Azhar had added an invaluable 71 for the fifth wicket with Sohail but Herath trapped him leg-before and reviewed it to overturn a not-out decision.

Earlier, Sri Lankan pace-cum-spin attack put the brakes on Pakistan's progress after they resumed at 51-0.

They removed both the openers in the first hour and then made inroads on a still batting friendly Dubai stadium pitch.

Pacer Lahiru Gamage took his first wicket in Tests when he bowled Shan Masood through the gate after the opener had made 16.

Sami Aslam was trapped leg before by off-spinner Dilruwan Perera for 39 to leave Pakistan two down for 65. Asad Shafiq fell for 12 while Babar Azam made eight.

Sri Lanka lead the two-match series 1-0 on account of winning the first Test by 21 runs in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistan has a distinct chance of winning the test now.. What a turn around. Even though it is a rare occurrence, Wahab can be an X factor from time to time. Best time to step up.

Wahab with his thinning and receding hairline showing the youngsta beauties how it's done! :wahab

Rules out the draw 2-0 or 1-1 either way how well Herath bowls will decide the fate of the match.

First innings both batsmen/bowlers let Pak down. In the 2nd innings bowlers have stepped up. Time for batsmen to step up. Wil they?

Good work today boyz we are now on fire. Abdul babajee ExpressPacer Arham_PakFan

Need to ride the jazba and keep it up tomorrow though.

The knight of the fortress has awaken to defend its walls.

No matter how poor the batting performance has been this last session of the day was all that we needed to give us a ray of hope.

Good rally at the end but Sri Lanka may have too much on the board already.

If we can dismiss Mendis, the dangerous Dickwella and the tail quickly tomorrow in the first session, it still means we have to bat out of our skins against Herath and co. to have any chance of winning.

Just one wicket away from the tail and we have a tailender specialist (Abbas) to clean things up there. :))

And considering how much the wicket is spinning, I don't think we can do it.

We need a miracle even after this miracle. That's how bad we've been in this test.

Already have too much

They will get at least another 50 runs. Herath will go through the line up

SL made the cardinal mistake of not bringing on Herath for a very long time. Pakistan had already put up around 50. 2nd innings they will open with him.

Perfect time for Babar, Azhar and Asad to step up, don't you think?

Don't think Asad has it in him. He can't play under pressure, especially when people expect him to perform. As for Babar, I'm shocked at him being so poor against spin. It's utterly disappointing. I thought he'd be better and since his recent form isn't exactly very encouraging, you can't bank on him. It's all on Harris and Azhar.

Dunno why but Asad is seriously baffling me here. How the hell do you go downhill from where he was in 2015? He was the perfect test batsman those days minus the double-tons and stuff cuz he played at #6.

I want to see Asad overcome this bad run ASAP and win this test for PAK. This guy can do it. Just needs to apply himself and grind it out with good shot selection. If him and Azhar play enough overs, then PAK still have a chance. Haris and Sarfraz can tick off those last 60-70 runs easily if our middle order can carry them that far. Not to forget that openers should also provide some kinda platform something around 70-80 runs

Because I was away at the start of the SL innings and came back to find them five down :ashwin
Thats why they r a minnow team. They can collapse at the first sign if pressure and pak team is losing to this lot tells about the level of pak team

I've lost all faith in him honestly. He's disappointed me really bad. Looks like a tailender with most of his dismissals these days and I think there's better batsmen out there for us to persist with him. He has had an awful last year.

I said it yesterday Pakistan wont be scoring more than 280. We are abysmal at batting and a borefest in test cricket. Never know how to play with intent. Already 254 runs behind and Sri Lanka will be happy with a 350 target which the last 5 wickets should be able to get close to 100 runs.
And then Herath will do what he does best and we will get bowled out. Again not being negative or harsh but its the reality. We got skilled chasing 136 and I can't see Pakistan winning or drawing the test chasing 350 or over.

So weird,Lanka has just given Pak a sniff for victory here, should be disappointed with their performance, because even if played like ODI ,its 50-50 now.

What a rubbish performance. Some "fightback" lol to get some fans excited against a team we should be wiping the floor with.

We are in transition though I guess, very disappointed with seniors like Shafiq, Sarfraz. They should be leading the way. Can't do everything with Misbah and/or Younis holding your hand.

My favorite Pakistani player delivers for his country... but with a 250+ lead, SL must still fancy their chances.

50 more runs tomorrow by SLs ...... and we are in deep trouble ..... as it is we already are !!!!!!!!

Their last 2 guys can barely hold a bat and they are 34/5. I'd expect them to get around 50/60 more on average.

I don't think the wicket is anything like that bad. Mostly the Srilankans got out playing bad shots rather than any tricks of the wicket or anything special.

When Asad got out in innings 2 last game it was because the ball stopped and spat out like a grenade, Herath was practically unplayable. The wicket is actually nothing like this at the moment and it's not even day 5.

Pakistan underperformed slightly after everyone got a start, and Srilanka have choked. Don't think 300 is ungettable or super difficult on a beggining of day 4 wicket.

Always look at fundamentals and facts.

Yasir Shah and Wahab Riaz scored same number of runs that half the SL line-up has here, and they did it 20 minutes before.

Nothing happened to the wicket in these 30 minutes that it suddenly became some mine-field.

Pakistan can get very encouraged by Lanka's collapse. How they deal with Herath in the 4th innings will be the defining factor?

The best batsman of spin I have found playing a test for Pakistan in the last 5 yrs after Misbah and Younis was Khurram Manzoor however I remember him struggling a bit against Hearth others he would play for fun.

We have the ability. It’s up to the boys now

SLs will dig in hard tomorrow ... they still have some lumber left. Yessss ..... 35/5 looks really good .... but chasing 300+ in the 4th innings ... not our cup of Tea. Mind you, it can be done ..... but can WE do it ??? Hope we can !!!

The Lankans have thrown away the wickets. They will be bundled under 60 today and PK will be required to chase down 280 odd

We couldn't chase 130 last game. I wouldn't get too excited about chasing 280. Really missing YK and Misbah in this series. Someone needs to lead from the front.

SriLanka are still favourites to win this game and the series esp if our second innings batting is anything to go by
