2022 Men's Hockey Asia Cup will take place from May 23rd to June 1st and will be hosted by Indonesia in the city of Jakarta.

The tournament will consists of 8 teams, and will be placed in 2 groups ( 4 teams) in each group.

The tournament will also act as a qualification for the 2023 world cup, the top 3 teams will qualify for the world cup. India is already qualified for the 2023 World cup, since their hosting it.

Group A will consists of India, Pakistan, Japan and Indonesia.
Group B will consists of Malaysia , South Korea, Oman and Bangladesh.

India are heavy favorites to win the tournament. Pakistan will need to ensure, that they finish top 3 if they want to qualify for the world cup, failure to do so will mean Pakistan will miss out on 2023 world cup.

Pakistan will play their opening match vs India on May 23rd.

Pakistan has a long way to go if they want to improve their hockey, it seems like it is going in the right direction but only time will tell.

Pakistan has won this tournament 3 times ( 1982, 1985 and 1989)

India has won this tournament 3 times ( 2003, 2007, and 2017)

South Korea has won this tournament 4 times (1994, 1999, 2009 and 2013)

Pakistan, India, and South Korea are the only nations to have won this tournament so far.

Regardless best of luck to Pakistan Hockey Team

Exciting , Pakistan’s recent performances have been really good , hopefully India doesn’t take them lightly.

Exciting , Pakistan’s recent performances have been really good , hopefully India doesn’t take them lightly.

Even if recent performences are good, India is still favorites to win this match and the tournament as a whole, I find when it comes to Field Hockey, India does not seem to take Pakistan lightly which is a good thing.

It is also why India recent record for the best 5 years had been outstanding vs Pakistan, India is the stronger team, but they do not take Pakistan lightly either.

Hoping for a Pakistan win, but suspecting a win from India. I will be happy with a draw too :D

Pakistan last beat India was 6 years ago, the last draw was 4 years ago.
India has been unbeaten against Pakistan in the last 11 encounters with 10 wins and one draw.

Pakistan last win was in 2014, they did beat them in 2016 at south asia games but india fielded a second or third string team. So since 2014 id even say since 2010 india record over Pakistan has been insanely good from an Indian perspective.

JAKARTA: Pakistan Men’s National Hockey Team’s Asia Cup 2022 campaign got off to a poor start as the side lost their first practice match against Korea 2-1, here on Friday.

In the side’s first practice match ahead of the Asia Cup, the green shirts suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat against Korea.

Ali Shan remained the only goal scorer for Pakistan while Korean players netted the field and a short corner goal to claim the victory.

The Green Shirts will officially begin their Asia Cup campaign on May 23 against the arch-rivals India, followed by the second match against Indonesia on May 24 and the last group match against Japan on May 26.

NEW DELHI: Pakistan hockey team head coach Siegfried Aikman on Friday said his players have a lot of respect for their Indian counterparts and considered some of them as role models.

Arch-rivals India and Pakistan face each other in Pool A in the opening match of the Asian Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia on Monday.

"There is a lot of respect among Pakistan players for Indian hockey players. Some Indians are even their role models," Aikman said ahead of the match.

"I saw the same respect in Indian players the other way around as well. This environment is a good one to have," he added.

The prestigious tournament is a World Cup qualifier. India, Japan, Pakistan, and hosts Indonesia are placed in pool A while Malaysia, Korea, Oman and Bangladesh are grouped in pool B.

"Players are very excited to be back to competition. They want to play against the best and are looking forward to the match against India," Aikman said in a release.

With the Super 4s format introduced in Asia Cup, the prospect of India taking on Pakistan twice is also a possibility.

"It will be a tough tournament. There is no second chance or bypass for other teams to reach the World Cup." the newly-appointed coach said.

"Apart from India, who have already qualified for the World Cup, it's all or nothing for all the other teams. Hence, all of us have to go all out in the tournament," he said.

Speaking on the challenges in front of him as coach, Aikman said he hopes to revive Pakistan hockey. He also opened up on how Pakistan players can take inspiration from Indian hockey.

"World Hockey needs India and Pakistan to lead in the sport. India are doing well at the moment. But we need to revive ourselves, and I am hopeful I can do that here, and make Pakistan hockey promising again.

"I want to develop a structure in the country where we can start building players at the grassroots so that in 10 years, we have a Pakistan team that can compete against the top teams," he said.

"India hockey team is a big example for teams in Asia. They showed that you can come from very deep and reach far. It takes time, but if you do it consistently and bluntly that you will get there," Aikman signed off.

Asia Cup: Young Indian team needs to handle pressure in hockey opener against Pakistan

While Pakistan has fielded quite a few new faces in the tournament, India will be represented by its ‘A’ team under the leadership of veteran Birendra Lakra, who came out of retirement after the Tokyo Olympics

A second-string Indian men’s hockey team will have to tactfully deal with the pressure when it opens its title defence against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup here on Monday.

While Pakistan has fielded quite a few new faces in the tournament, India will be represented by its ‘A’ team under the leadership of veteran Birendra Lakra, who came out of retirement after the Tokyo Olympics.

For India, the Asia Cup provides a platform to test its bench strength ahead of a busy season, that includes the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and the FIH World Cup next year for which the Tokyo Olympic medallists have already qualified as the host nation.

Pakistan, on the other hand, is looking at the tournament to make the cut for the 2023 World Cup in Bhubaneswar. The top three teams in Asia will qualify directly for the January showpiece.

Both India and Pakistan have won the Asia Cup thrice each.

India had won the last edition in 2017 by beating Malaysia in the final in Dhaka.

India's 20-member squad, to be coached by former captain Sardar Singh, was originally supposed to be led by Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Rupinder Pal Singh, who also came out of retirement but a wrist injury ruled him out of the tournament.

The Indian squad includes another veteran in SV Sunil, who too returned from retirement and is regarded as a live wire on the field.

Sunil, who had missed the Tokyo Olympics squad due to an injury, will serve as Lakra’s deputy.

The Indian team has as many as 10 players who are set to make their senior India debuts, including Yashdeep Siwach, Abhisek Lakra, Manjeet, Vishnukant Singh and Uttam Singh. They were all part of the junior World Cup.

Besides, the side also has new players like Mareeswaren Sakthivel, Sheshe Gowda BM, Pawan Rajbhar, Abharan Sudev and S Karthi and it remains to be seen how Sardar gets the best out of these youngsters.

The new players know that a good outing in the Asia Cup can open the doors for the Commonwealth Games team as the national selectors and chief coach Graham Reid would be closely following the proceedings.

For India, Simranjeet Singh, who was part of the Tokyo Olympics squad, will make a comeback in the forwardline after a long injury lay-off.

But the onus would be on the handful of seniors to guide the youngsters in the clash.

“It (pressure) is always there (in Pakistan match). Any match against Pakistan is always charged up. But being seniors, if we become too excited, the junior players can come under pressure. So we need to take it as a normal match,” India vice-captain Sunil said.

“It is not an easy tournament but if we play according to our plan we can win. We need to motivate the youngsters, guide them and take them along. So there are big responsibilities on our shoulders.” Pakistan will be approaching the tournament after a mixed bag tour of Europe under new coach Siegfried Aikman, where the team played five matches -- two each against the Netherlands and Spain and one against Belgium -- out of which it won two.

With both the teams having youngsters, it remains to be seen how the players control their emotions and tempers on the turf.

After Pakistan, India will play Japan on Tuesday in the second Pool A match and hosts Indonesia on May 26.

Malaysia, Korea, Oman and Bangladesh are clubbed in Pool B.

In the other games on the opening day, Malaysia will play Oman and South Korea will take on Bangladesh in Pool B, while Japan will face Indonesia in Pool A.

Why have they send their B team , grrr! when Pak team is in hot form.

Yeah, Getting beaten by SK and defeating Oman 1-0 only suggest exactly that lol (though we are talking aout warm ups)

They actually did a Europe tour before this if I’m not mistaken and had better results..

Why have they send their B team , grrr! when Pak team is in hot form.

For Many Reasons that I can think of

India Second string team can still beat Pakistan teams, Pakistan team is inexperienced, and is making still miles behind when in comes to being an elite Hockey Nation again

This tournament is not very important to India, since India has already qualified for the World cup next year which their hosting, even if India finish last ( wont happen) just giving an example it will not effect their qualification. This tournament is more important for the other teams

At the same time Younger players can use this tournament to gain experience and gain exposure. India will be more focused on other international assignements, such as Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and etc.

The results basically consisted of a win vs Netherlands and Spain and also a Loss to both teams as well, I believe they played Belgium and lost both games as well, so despite having 2 good wins, they lost a few matches as well, at the same time if was a tour match, so results do not always mean much, its good for Pakistan can help with confidence, but their recent performence in practice match for Asia cup is concerning.

Across sports I wouldnt take Pakistan’s practice games seriously they usually bring their a game during tournaments but i do agree on reasoning you gave for Indian hockey selection.

3 results so far

Malaysia beat Oman 7-0
South Korea beat Bangladesh 6-1
Japan beat Indonesia 9-0

India vs Pakistan ends in 1-1 draw I did not watch the game personally, but I guess a decent result for both teams. I did read that Pakistan tied the game in the last minute of the 4th Quarter, so that sounds exciting.

Poor result for us, we were ahead 1-0 in the first quarter itself but Pakistan equalised in the dying moments of the game.

JAKARTA: The high-voltage match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 between the two arch-rivals India and Pakistan, ended in a draw.

Pakistan’s forward Abdul Waheed scored the match-saving goal for the Green Shirts, which helped the side to take a point and avoided an opening defeat to their Asia Cup campaign.

Earlier, India pulled ahead in the first quarter as the debutant Karti Selvam scored his first goal for the men in blue. Waheed’s strike, in the closing minutes, however, nullified the lead as both teams shared a point each.

Pakistani goalkeeper Akmal Hussain was adjudged as the Player of the Match for denying a number of attempts from the Indian forwards.

India had more possession but they missed a number of chances to extend their lead and even a chance that came in the last 10 seconds of the match.

Pakistan will now face the hosts Indonesia on May 24 in an attempt to get their first victory of the campaign whereas India will lock horns with the reigning champion Japan in their second Asia Cup fixture.

Apparently Pakistan played extremely poorly and missed quite a few scoring opportunities.

Very poor performance by the Indian team. So many penalty corner missed. With this kind of performance we can't even reach top 8 in Olympics.

Unfortunate but it is what it is.. hopefully our youngsters improve from their mistakes.

Abdul Rana's goal in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter helped Pakistan draw their Group A game against India in the ongoing Asia Cup on Monday. In the first quarter, Karthi Selvam had scored for India and in the next two quarters, no goals were scored. However, through a penalty corner, Abdul Rana converted and Pakistan got their equaliser. India and Pakistan squared off in the Asia Cup Hockey 2022 game on Monday evening and the Birendra Lakra-side failed to start their tournament on a high. The Indian side fielded some new faces in the squad. The Indian squad comprises Yashdeep Siwach, Abhishek Lakra, Manjeet, and Vishnukant Singh. Earlier, Rupinder Pal Singh was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury.

In Pool A, India, Japan, Pakistan and hosts Indonesia are put together while Group B has Malaysia, Korea, Oman and Bangladesh.

India endured a tough 2-5 defeat against Japan in the Asia Cup 2022 clash in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The Japanese kept things in control right from the first quarter, which ended in 0-0. Ken Nagayoshi then converted the penalty corner in the 23rd minute as Japan went into the halftime with a slender one goal advantage.

Kosei Kawabe then helped Japan extend their lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute, before Pawan Rajbhar scored India's first goal to keep them alive in the contest. The final quarter saw Japan add three more goals, while India could only manage one. With this result, India now find themselves at the third position of the Pool A table and Japan lead the charts.

India's run in the tournament will depend on the clash between Japan and Pakistan, which is scheduled to be played on Thursday. India will also take on hosts Indonesia in their next fixture, which will be played on the same day

Pakistan’s hockey World Cup hopes dashed

Pakistan have failed to qualify for the super four of the ongoing Asia Cup, which means that they won’t be able to qualify for next year’s FIH Hockey World Cup.

Pakistan finished the first round level on points, 4, with India but the latter had a better goal difference.

India need to win their final pool match against Indonesia by margin of 15 goals in order to qualify for the next round. Despite the stiff ask, the Men in Blue defeated the hosts by 16-0 to confirm their spot in the super four.

Pakistan could have booked their spot in the super four if they had beaten or drew the match with Japan earlier in the day. However, the green shirts lost the match by 3-2.

Pakistan were also unlucky as two of their goals were disallowed during the match.

The dramatic moment of the game came in the third quarter when a goal from Pakistan was disallowed as they had 12 players on the field.

Moreover, Pakistan captain Umar Butta was shown a yellow card. The Green-shirts also lost their review, despite the director failing to have any conclusive video evidence.

Another goal in the fourth quarter from Pakistan was disallowed, due to player contact with the Japanese goalkeeper.

It must be noted that top three teams of the ongoing Asia Cup will qualify for the FIH Hockey World Cup in India next year.

Top 3 qualify automatic but since india is host all the other 3 semi finalist have qualified

Rising to the occasion, Indian men's hockey team slammed six goals in the final quarter for a crushing 16-0 victory against Indonesia, a result that took the holders into the knockout stage of the Asia Cup but shut the World Cup door on Pakistan in Jakarta on Thursday. India needed to win the Pool A contest by at least a 15-0 margin to qualify and the young players of the side delivered under pressure. Both India and Pakistan finished on four points each in Pool A behind Japan but the defending champions qualified for the Super 4s due to better goal difference (1). Pakistan had lost 2-3 to Japan earlier in the day.

The result not only pushed Pakistan out of the tournament but also dashed their hopes of World Cup qualification since only the top three teams here will be given tickets for the big event.

India, being the hosts, will play the World Cup later in the year and hence Hockey India decided to send young players to this tournament for exposure.

Dipsan Tirkey (5 goals) and Sudev Belimagga (3 goal) shared eight goals between them, playing a key role in team's crucial win.

Veteran SV Sunil, Pawan Rajbhar and Karthi Selvam scored a brace each while Uttam Singh and Nilam Sanjeep Xess were the other goal getters for India.

With odds stacked against them, India started on an attacking note and had the first shy at the goal in the seventh minute but Uttam Singh, who had only the goalkeeper to beat, pushed wide Maninder Singh's feed .

In the 10th minute, Rajbhar broke the shackles with a powerful shot from top of the circle.

Rajbhar doubled India's lead a minute later through a rebound from the team's first penalty corner.

A minute from the first quarter, India extended their lead through Uttam, who was at the right place at the right time to tap home.

India continued their attacking instinct and secured another penalty corner in the 19th minute from which Sunil scored after they recovered from a miss-stop.

A minute later, the Indians earned back-to-back penalty corners, the second of which was converted by Nilam Sanjeep Xess to make the scoreline 5-0.

In the 24th minute, Sunil deflected in Karthi Selvam's pass from near post to make it 6-0.

After the change of ends, Uttam missed yet another chance as she shot wide from close range with only the Indonesian goalie to beat.

Minutes later, India secured their seventh penalty corner but Junius Rumaropen made a double save once again.

In the 40th minute, Selvam tapped in after he was set by a brilliant Rajbhar, who dodged past three-four Indonesian defenders with his stickwork and strong play.

India secured three consecutive penalty corners and Dipsan scored from the last to keep the team's hopes alive.

Dipsan scored his second from the penalty stroke in the 42nd minute.

The Indians managed two more penalty corners but on both the occasion Dipsan faltered.

Belimagga then scored two goals in a span of two minutes before Dipsan completed his hat-trick by converting India's 14th penalty corner to make the scoreline 12-0.

The Indians earned a handful of penalty corners thereafter but the chances went abegging.

Tirkey then converted a penalty corner in the 47th minute before Sudev scored from a rebound from another set piece, five minutes from the hooter.

Desperate for goals, the Indians attacked with numbers and their ploy bore fruit when Karthi Selvam scored from a field effort. Tirkey converted two more penalty corners in the final minute of the game to extend India's stay in the tournament.

Pakistan Hockey Federation President, Coach Criticized As Team Fails To Qualify For World Cup 2023

Pakistan failed to qualify for World Cup as India replaced them at the number 2 spot in Pool A of Asia Cup Hockey 2022 with 16-0 win over Indonesia.

Erstwhile powerhouse of the game, Pakistan's failure to qualify for the men's hockey World Cup has created a furore in the nation with former players finding it "hard to digest" and calling for heads to roll in the national federation. (More Hockey News)

Pakistan hockey suffered a crushing blow on Thursday when it lost to Japan 2-3 in its final Poll A match of the ongoing Asia Cup.

With India winning 16-0 against hosts Indonesia, Pakistan crashed out of the tournament and also failed to qualify for next year's FIH World Cup to be held in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.

Once the undisputed champions of world hockey, Pakistan has reeled from one crisis to another and from one disappointment to another and Thursday's blow has led to renewed calls for the sacking of the long-serving president of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Brigadier (retd) Khalid Sajjad Khokar and coach Khawaja Junaid

Junaid, a former Olympian has been associated with the national senior and junior teams on a regular basis since his retirement.

"This is very hard to digest that for the second time now we have failed to qualify for the World Cup. Where is our hockey headed now?" former captain and Olympian Samiullah questioned.

Another former captain and Olympian, Islahuddin said it was heartbreaking that Pakistan has not qualified for the last two Olympics and now its second successive World Cup.

"There was a time when such big events were incomplete without Pakistan," he said.

Islahuddin's concerns are understandable considering that Pakistan, which is a proud hockey nation with three Olympic gold medals, four World Cup titles and numerous Asian level wins, has now gone without a major title since 2010 when they won the Asian Games gold.

Pakistan had high hopes of qualifying for the World Cup after drubbing Indonesia 13-0 in the Asia Cup but arch-rivals, India who needed 15 goals to qualify for the Super 4 stage, crushed their hopes.

Before the ongoing Asia Cup, the PHF even sent the team on a training tour of Europe besides appointing Dutchman Siefred Aikman as head coach.

Former celebrated centre forward Hasan Sardar said other Asian countries had forged ahead while Pakistan had been left behind because of a poor domestic structure.

"One could never even imagine that Japan could beat us," he said.

The present situation does not augur well for the sport's future in the country at all with former stalwarts wondering what is next for Pakistan hockey.

"We really need people to run hockey who have no self interest. We need coaches who are willing to work selflessly and are not there for the daily allowances and foreign rides," Samiullah said.

Olympian Rasheed ul Hasan pointed out that the two common factors for Pakistan hockey's dismal showings in recent years have been the PHF president and Khawaja Junaid.

"What have these two achieved as yet despite being around for so many years now. Khokar has been president for seven years now," he said.

"We have always measured our hockey strength with India and it hurts to see the Indian team now surging ahead of us in all departments. I think radical steps are required from the government to stop this decline," Pakistan's most successful captain and coach, Islahuddin said
