21-year-old Palestinian student killed in Australia

So, is Australian media - apart from SBS - still colonising Aiia Maasarwe’s tragic death? If her family identifies as Palestinian, then they must acknowledge and respect that first before their Israeli citizenship. Not “Israeli Arab”, either - that is just erasure. So sad. It shows that no place in this world is safe. People need to be extra cautious on a night out.

So this 21 year old girl, Aiia Masarwe was killed and r*ped by a racist named Kody, she's Palestinian Arab with Israeli citizenship so the media is only reporting her as Israeli.

No she was killed by purely becuause she was a woman her race or religion has nothing to do with it. It was a man who thought he has right to rape and murder a defenceless woman.

So Australia is also a Misgonyist society apart from being a racist one? Disgusting.

Unfortunately some men across the world think killing women for their own twisted perversion is ok and that isn't just one country. As a woman most of us feel unsafe in pretty much every country

He's aboriginal...

Every white person claims to have indigenous blood, he looks white and has a white name and was most like socialized as a white man. We have those type of people over here like Elizabeth Warren, we call 'em "pretendians". :))

He doesn't look white.

Blind hatred of white Australians at play here.....the man's race has nothing to do with it. We can apply the same blanket statement to all men as some are rapist and murderer as the op is labelling white Australians. Yes there are problems of how the majority treat the minority but not something unique to Australia.......Ask a Hazara in Pakistan or a Christian or an Ahmedi they will have the same gripes as a person of colour in Australia or USA or UK or Canada

Yup, he looks like your regular redneck. This animal would have done this to any woman if he had a chance. This poor girl was at the wrong place at the wrong time. In a country like Australia this animal will be tried and brought to justice and not celebrated for killing someone of different ethnicity.

He's obviously mixed with white, no full blooded Aboriginal looks like that and like I said he's most likely culturally white.

So his actions are the "whitemans" fault? As crimes like only ever happen in majority white countries right? Your hatred and bigotry is disgusting.....men thinking they own and treating women as they please is not a race based problem it a MAN problem. Look around you will find a story a man raping and killing a woman be it a stranger like Aya or a wife/gf/ex partner.

We dont know what was in his mind, so this is also an assumption.

From what I've read he attented marches against Australian day, maybe he was racist towards white people and thought the victim was also white?

Maybe his own race had a play to part in his issues? Aboriginal Australians face racism even though it was their land to begin with. He was also intoxicated most of the time.

The rape and murder was not racially driven however everyone tries to make it for their narrative. Yes there are huge issues with the Aboriginals but that doesn't give anyone the right to kill and murder someone. Using that logic any oppressed/marginalised community can attack and kill the host community as they are hard done by!!!

And the core issue of men killing women for their twisted pleasure not answered and just an anti white tirade.

I could say something but I don't want to be disrespectful. Lets just say you chose to stand on the white side.

It is a male issue and not a race issue. If that was the case you wouldn't get women being raped and attacked in none white countries as you have said your self it is a white societal issue. So if you can explain that then I won't say anything further on this topic

An international student of Arab background was attacked, even the attacker mentioned how she was a "lonely international student", it may or not be a race issue but we won't no for sure until the investigation is done.

If that was the only murder of a woman late at night I would give it but it isn't. She was attacked by a man because he saw an oppourtunity of a lone female. You can twist whichever ever way you want race was not an issue

Just when you think you've become desensitised to all the terrible news stories...

So incredibly heartbreaking, I am at a loss for words. The dignity of the Masaware family in the wake of this cruel and appalling attack, is a stark contrast to the depravity of the low life **** who attacked her.

On a side note it is disappointing to see people online more interested in twisting this crime into suiting their personal prejudices. Although the investigation is still underway, the common denominator in all attacks like these is a man attacking a woman for his own twisted pleasure, as the poster Salma mentioned. (Yet men become inexplicably defensive when that is pointed out)

Salma_T, are you based in Australia? This isn't getting that much coverage abroad but it's heartening to see the Australian people come together to show their support for the family. I read that it made a huge difference to them. Do you think the anger and shock from the event is sustainable enough to lead to anything of consequence?

He was aware she was 'international' .. Clearly as a rapist and existinhg sex offendor, he must've been rebuffed and decided to attack.

Why, Salma, you're so vehemently opposed to it being a racially motivated attack; Racism can exist amongst other colours ..

As for 'Pakistanian', you're like a parody of how a Pakistani may appear; one, he's obviously not white and while Australia has a racism issue, this was perpetrated by an Aboriginal community member, somewhat ionic given your offensive.

Awful story all in all. In a foreign land, poorly lit, she was already fearful. Should never have risked it. RIP.

Solid Snake the people of Australia have come out against this and other crimes that have been committed against women (a women a week was being killed last year by a known person so this is separate that it was a random by an unknown). Had a murder in 6 months ago of a woman walking home by a random man. So it keeps happening I really don't know how it can be solved. It isn't all men but a male problem.

SpiritOf1903 I really don't think think it was racially motivated at all and nothing has led to it being a race related attack eitherso far in the investigation.

Thanks for your reply. I had since come across the reports of, I think, the instant you referred to and even other similar ones in Melbourne.

So whilst the outpouring of grief and anger is a silver lining, how society can change to the point where this stops happening, is not clear at all.

I have just felt so despondent since coming across this story. I can not imagine the agony the victim must have gone through, or the pain her family must be in now... I hope with all my heart they find some semblance of peace after such tragedy.

On a different Facebook post from a page he operated under the name Kody Wrex, Herrmann on January 8 wrote “international girl of mystery, you knows who you are,” a message that Australian media believes may have been directed at Maasarwe.
