Four people were killed and multiple others wounded in a shooting near a mosque in Oman's capital Muscat, police said Tuesday.

"The Royal Oman Police have responded to a shooting incident that occurred in the vicinity of a mosque in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area," police said in a statement.

The force gave an initial toll of four killed and "several others" wounded at the mosque in eastern Muscat.

Such an attack is rare in the Sultanate, which has regularly played the role of mediator in regional conflicts.

The United States embassy in Muscat issued a security alert following the shooting and cancelled all visa appointments Tuesday.

"US citizens should remain vigilant, monitor local news and heed directions of local authorities," the embassy wrote on social media platform X.

Footage verified by AFP shows people fleeing near Imam Ali Mosque, its minaret visible, as gunshots ring out.

A voice can be heard saying "oh God" and repeating "oh Hussein", referring to the imam who Shiites view as the rightful successor to the Prophet Mohammed.

Shiites this week mark Ashura, an annual day of mourning that commemorates the 7th-century battlefield martyrdom of Hussein.

Police said that "all necessary security measures and procedures have been taken to handle the situation" in their statement.

"The authorities are continuing to gather evidence and conduct investigations to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident," the force said on X.

This is extremely shocking given Oman is one of the most peaceful (and beautiful) countries in the Gulf. I always found the local Omani people to be the best foreigners. Sad to know and find out that this too can happen in Oman. Praying for the safety of all and hopefully the government will act hard on this.

I visited there many times in the past for business. Very nice people and mostly unsectarian.

Oman is a different vibe which is why this is so shocking. It’s literally the last country in the Middle East I would ever expect to give me these sort of unpleasant news. I hope the background story is found out and action is taken on it so there is no repetition.

Last time i was there a Pakistani friend arranged for a short tour in Salalah. Such a beautiful place. Lush green in the middle of the desert. There is a big community of Keralites as well in Oman.

Foreign Office confirms four Pakistanis died in Oman attack

Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed on Tuesday that the attack on a mosque in Oman had resulted in the deaths of four Pakistanis. Another 30 Pakistanis were injured in the attack.

“Pakistan strongly condemns the dastardly terrorist attack on Imam Bargah Ali bin Abu Talib in Wadi Kabir in Muscat, Oman that resulted in multiple casualties including the death of four Pakistanis,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

The statement said that the Pakistani embassy is in contact with authorities for identification and repatriation of the mortal remains of the martyred Pakistanis.

“It has also opened a helpline to respond to queries from the Pakistani community in Oman and to facilitate them. Ambassador Imran Ali is also visiting local hospitals to inquire about the well-being of injured Pakistani nationals,” the statement added.

Islamic State claims responsibility for deadly attack on Shi'ite mosque in Oman

Islamic State, the Sunni Muslim dominated militant group, claimed responsibility on Tuesday for an assault on a Shi'ite Muslim mosque in Oman that left at least nine people dead, including three attackers, a rare security breach in the oil-producing Gulf state.

Four Pakistanis, an Indian and a police officer were among those killed in the gun attack, according to Pakistani, Indian and Omani officials. The Oman police said 28 people of various nationalities were wounded, including security personnel.

Islamic State said in a statement late on Tuesday that three of its "suicide attackers" fired on worshippers at the mosque on Monday evening and exchanged gunfire with Omani security forces until morning.

The group also published what it said was a video of the attack on its Telegram site.

Another video shared on social media and verified by Reuters showed people running from the mosque while gunfire could be heard.

Oman Shi'ite mosque attackers were Omani citizens, police say

The three gunmen who shot and killed six people at a Shi'ite Muslim mosque in Oman in an attack claimed by Islamic State this week were all Omani nationals, police said on Thursday.

The assault began on Monday evening at the Ali bin Abi Talib mosque in the Wadi al-Kabir neighbourhood of Oman's capital Muscat as Shi'ite Muslims gathered.

The Royal Oman Police said the three gunmen were brothers and "were killed due to their insistence on resisting security personnel". It said that police investigations had indicated the three gunmen were "influenced by misguided ideas".
