At least 30 people were killed while 50 others were injured after two passenger trains collided near Dharki, a city located in the Ghotki District of upper Sindh, on Monday morning.

According to a spokesperson for Pakistan Railways, the accident took place after a Millat Express train — headed from Karachi to Sargodha — derailed and shifted to the "down track". Due to this, it collided with a Sir Syed Express train coming from Rawalpindi, he said, adding that the incident took place near the Raiti railway station.

He said that a relief train had been dispatched from Rohri while officials, along with police and the local administration, were carrying out rescue efforts. He said that helpline centres have been set up for passengers in Karachi, Sukkur, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi.

He said that some of the passengers from the Sir Syed Express train have been taken to the Sadiqabad railway station. "Railway traffic would be restored when tracks are cleared," he added.

Between 15 to 20 passengers are still trapped in the wreckage of the Millat Express train and authorities are trying to arrange heavy machinery to rescue those people who are crying for help, said Ghotki SSP Umar Tufail.

He said that the death toll is likely to rise as one of the bogies is still stuck in the wreckage. "The Pakistan Railways relief train has not yet reached the spot from Rohri," he said.

An emergency has been declared at hospitals in Ghotki, Dharki, Obaro and Mirpur Mathelo and doctors and paramedical staff had been called on duty.

Ghotki Deputy Commissioner Usman Abdullah said at least 30 people had been killed while 50 others had been injured in the incident. However, officials were facing difficulty in rescuing citizens as the bogies had overturned, he said, adding that the death toll could increase.

Speaking to Geo News, the deputy commissioner said that 13 to 14 bogies had derailed in the incident while six to eight were "completely destroyed". He said that citizens that were still trapped were a "challenge" for rescue officials.

He said that a relief train had departed from Rohri, adding that the local administration and rescue teams were present on the site of the accident. However, the official refused to give a timeframe for the rescue operation.

"This is a challenging task. It will take time to use heavy machinery to free citizens [still trapped]," he said. He said that an emergency had been declared in the district and all doctors and paramedical staff had been put on call.

"We are also establishing a medical camp to provide medical aid to citizens," he said.

A collision between two passenger express trains in Sindh's Ghotki district killed at least 36 people and injured scores more on Monday, with the death toll likely to rise as rescuers were still trying to access several mangled coaches.

According to Pakistan Railway (PR) officials, the collision occurred between the Millat Express, which was en-route from Karachi to Sargodha and Sir Syed Express, coming from Rawalpindi. The mishap occurred between Raiti and Obaro railway stations.

A spokesperson of PR added that the accident occurred after the coaches of one train, the Millat Express, derailed and fell across the opposite track, where they were hit by another train, the Sir Syed Express.

At least 30 dead had been transported to surrounding hospitals, senior district police official Umar Tufail told a local television channel.

He said he expected the toll to shoot up as there were still mangled train compartments that rescuers had not been able to access despite the passage of hours since the accident in the Ghotki district of the southern Sindh province.

The Pakistan Army and the paramilitary Rangers have also reached the incident site and are taking part in the rescue efforts.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said military doctors and ambulances have been dispatched from Pano Aqil and are participating in the rescue operation. Army engineers and specialist teams of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) are being airlifted from Rawalpindi to aid the efforts.

The ISPR added that two helicopters are being flown from Multan for casualty evacuations while relief goods are being prepared and will be dispatched “shortly”.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was shocked by the 'horrific accident' and added that he had asked the railways minister to reach the site of the accident and ensure medical assistance to the injured and support for the families of those who lost their lives in the mishap.

He also said he was ordering a comprehensive investigation into "railway safety faultlines".

The senior police official added that there were up to 25 people in one compartment that had yet to be accessed.

The chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh have expressed their condolences on the loss of precious lives.

Rescue efforts are underway and the injured are being shifted to local medical facilities.

Firstly Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon.

Is it still laal haweli wala who is railway minister? You are bringing this up because of your hate for IK, but you still have a good point nevertheless. And again it shows how easy it is to critisize when you are in the opposition.

Sheikh Rasheed was removed as railway minister in December 2020 after he proved to be the worst office holder in history of Pakistani railways.

Like all other offices and institutions, PTI government destroyed railway as well. The excuse that it was in bad shape when Imran took over is pointless because it’s performance under his watch deteriorated further.

Sheikh Rasheed is now a puppet interior minister which along with defense and foreign ministry, is the most useless ministry in Pakistan, since everyone knows who actually runs the show from behind the scenes when it comes to these ministries.

The current railway minister is Azam Swati, and just like his predecessor and every other minister in PTI including the prime minister, he has been a complete and utter failure.

These words will be of no consolation to anyone concerned -May Grant Jannat to the deceased and sabar to the families.

Pakistan train crash kills at least 33

Accidents on the decrepit system are common. In 2005, about 130 people were killed in a collision involving three trains in the same district.

A Pakistani train crashed into derailed carriages from another train on Monday, killing at least 33 people, government officials said, in the latest accident to highlight the perilous state of a more-than-150 year old railway system.

The death toll was likely to rise as rescuers struggled to reach people trapped in several mangled compartments strewn across the tracks in the southern province of Sindh.

A Pakistan Railways spokesman said at least 33 bodies had been taken to hospitals, among them two railway officials. More than 100 people were injured, he told Reuters.

An injured passenger from the first train told of the double disaster.

"We felt as if we had been thrown away," the man, who had a bandaged head, told a television reporter from hospital, speaking of the initial derailing of his train.

"The second train then hit our train that caused more damage," he said.

The Pakistan Railways spokesman said several carriages of the first train fell across the adjacent track after the derailment in the Ghotki district.

The second train, coming from the other direction, then smashed into them, he added.

A collision between two passenger express trains in Sindh's Ghotki district killed at least 40 people and injured scores more on Monday.

Pakistan has a shoddy record when it comes to accidents involving trains. Accidents on the decrepit system are common.

In the past decade, the country has witnessed a number of deadly train accidents, and they seem to have increased in frequency over the past few years.

Ghotki

The accident occurred as the coaches of one train, Millat Express, derailed and fell across the opposite track, where they were hit by another train, the Sir Syed Express.

"The driver tried to apply emergency brakes but the locomotive hit the infringing coaches," the railways said in an initial report.

Sukkur

On March 6, 2021, one person was killed while another 29 were injured as Lahore-bound Karachi Express derailed near Pannu Aqil Taluka of Sukkur district.

Sheikhupura

On July 3, 2020, 20 Sikh pilgrims died and several others were injured in a collision between a train and a coaster near Sheikhupura.

Rahimyar Khan

On October 31, 2019, 74 people died after a fire broke out in Tezgam Express – travelling from Karachi to Rawalpindi – after a gas canister reportedly exploded on board as the train was passing through Rahim Yar Khan.

The fire started after passengers started cooking on the train, and the resulting inferno destroyed three economy-class carriages of the train.

Sadiqabad

A Quetta-bound train collided with a cargo train near Sadiqabad in Punjab, killing 21 people and injuring over 100 on July 11, 2019. The accident was caused by a delay in switching the train tracks.

Makli Shah

Three people were killed when a passenger train collided with a stationary cargo train at Makli Shah, near Hyderabad on June 20, 2019.

Narowal

Twelve children were injured as a passenger train crashed into a school van near Punjab's Narowal on December 18, 2018.

Local witnesses said the accident took place owing to dense fog and because the gate at the crossing was left open.

Attock

Nine bogies of the Peshawar-bound Khushal Khan Khattak Express from Karachi derailed near Attock on September 16, 2018, in which 20 passengers sustained injuries.

Sehwan

On September 27, 2018, another Peshawar-bound train derailed in which 11 bogies overturned in Sehwan, Sindh.

Mehrabpur

In 2007, at least 56 people were killed and more than 120 injured in a crash near Sindh's Mehrabpur.

More than 12 carriages of the overnight train travelling between Karachi and Lahore came off the rails with some carriages plunging into the water.

The train was packed with passengers returning home for Eidul Azha.

Officials say the likely cause for the crash was a faulty track.

Ghotki

In 2005, three passenger trains collided in Ghotki, Sindh in which 132 people were killed and hundreds more injured.

The train travelling to Karachi crashed into a broken-down train, catapulting carriages across the track into the path of another train.

The Pakistan Railways said the crash was caused by a train conductor misreading a signal.

According to the railway ministry's data, during the period between August 2018 to June 2019, 20 accidents were of freight trains derailing while another 20 occurred at unmanned railway crossings.

Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday berated the government over the Ghotki train accident and said PML-N and incumbent ministers are "paper tigers" who are politicking the issue.

Two express trains collided on Monday in Sindh's Ghotki and killed over 45 passengers, while more than 100 others have been injured, said police and rescue officials.

The Millat Express derailed and the Sir Syed Express train hit it soon afterwards, railways officials confirmed, saying that the collision took place between the Raiti and Obaro railway stations.

A rescue operation is under way at the site of crash and the injured are being shifted to hospitals.

Bilawal, addressing the floor of the National Assembly, said a tragic incident has occurred in Ghotki, as he lamented that a poor person's life is not safe during travel via the railways.

"They (government) do political point-scoring even when an incident like these happen," he said, adding: "I want to convey a message to the affectees of the crash: We stand with you and demand answers from the authorities."

The PPP chairman questioned why railway accidents were occurring repeatedly during this government's tenure, adding they had not answered the questions raised in this regard.

Meanwhile, PML-N staged a walkout after Bilawal criticised the party and the speaker did not let former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal take over the floor.

Murad Saeed calls to end politicking the issue

Minister for Communications Murad Saeed, speaking on the floor of the assembly, said all the political parties were politicking the issue when they should be doing the opposite.

"We had immediately started works on the ML-1 project after coming into power," he said, adding if he responds to the Opposition's claims, they would flee the house.

Fawad Chaudhry slams Opposition
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, speaking on the floor earlier, had informed the house about the initial investigation findings. "1,388 passengers were on board both trains."

The minister said the probe into the incident was underway and necessary tools have been dispatched for repairing the railway tracks.

"The railways have been neglected for several years, and that is why today, we had to witness such an incident," he said, as he shifted the blame on PML-N and PPP.

"Had the past government invested capital in Orange Line Trains, we would not have to face such a tragic incident .... the people who ruled this country did not let any institution prosper," he said.

The minister, taking a jibe at the Opposition, said they were making faces like they were unaware of why the incident had occurred. "The people involved in the downfall of the railways will not tell us how to revive it."

Fawad said from 2008-18, political hirings took place in public institutions that led to their downfall and left them almost non-operational — may it be railways or Pakistan Steel Mills.

Further lambasting the Opposition, Chaudhry said they had refused to talk to the government over electoral reforms.

"When we speak to them about electoral reforms, they ask us to first [amend] National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws," he said.

Chaudhry said the government aspired to take matters forward with the political parties, but the Opposition was just interested in getting their cases disposed of.

Can you actually give stats as to the number of accidents per year both minor and major since 2013. Otherwise you are using the deaths in a desperate attempt to score some petty points. And I bet you won't have the balls take on the challenge

Old trains and poor drivers. So lets here it, the military is to blame for this too!

SUKKUR: At least 55 people were killed and over 150 others injured in twin accidents between Reti and Daharki railway stations where eight carriages of Millat Express derailed just before Sir Syed Express rammed into them in the wee hours of Monday morning.

Number of casualties is likely to climb up further with many passengers still trapped under the wreckage after daylong rescue operation.

The twin accidents, Sir Syed Express’s collision with Sargodha-bound Millat Express shortly after the derailment of eight wagons of Millat Express, resulted in the suspension of train service, with authorities offering refund for seats booked in advance.

The pre-dawn crash came as a grim reminder of the 2005 horrific accident on the same track in Sukkur railway division when three passenger trains had collided with each other, leaving at least 130 passengers dead and 170 others injured.

As per Pakistan Railways policy, according to a railways spokesperson, the authorities will be giving Rs1500,000 to the heirs of each deceased and between Rs50,000 and Rs300,000 to the injured as compensation.

According to early reports, the Millat Express was heading from Karachi to Sargodha when it derailed between Reti and Daharki stations in Ghotki district at around 3.30am, spilling eight carriages onto the track carrying the Sir Syed Express from Rawalpindi in the opposite direction.

Around 1,200 passengers were travelling on the two trains.

Local farmers and villagers were the first to arrive at the site in large numbers, some clambering on top of the overturned carriages in an attempt to reach survivors. They managed to pull out several bodies and trapped passengers before shifting them to hospitals, while some drove tractors close to the scene in an attempt to move the wreckage or to shift the injured. Police and Rangers personnel, district administration officials and army troops, too, later arrived at the scene to take part in the rescue work.

According to witnesses and locals, 60 passengers including men, women and children were killed on the spot and more than 150 passengers were injured. However, official sources put the death toll at 55.

More than 150 passengers, including 15 members of a marriage party going to Punjab from Sanghar, were injured. They were shifted to hospitals in Ghotki, Ubauro, Mirpur Mathelo and Shaikh Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan, where a state of emergency was declared while local people appealed for blood donations.

“We tumbled upon each other, but that was not so fatal,” Akhtar Rajput, a passenger on the train that derailed, told AFP. “Then another train hit us from nowhere, and that hit us harder. When I regained my senses, I saw passengers lying around me, some trying to get out of the coach.”

Shahid, another passenger, said: “I was disoriented and trying to figure out what happened to us when the other train hit.”

Ghotki Deputy Commissioner Usman Abdullah, SSP Umar Tufail and other officials visited the area to supervise rescue work.

SSP Tufail said at least 51 people were killed and dozens injured. “One coach is under the engine, and we can see three bodies trapped inside,” he said, adding that the death toll would rise as two other bodies had been reported elsewhere, too.

Senior railways officials, including Sukkur Divisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railways Tariq Latif, also arrived to assess the situation. In the meantime, the railway relief train from Sadiqabad and later on, another railway relief train from Rohri arrived at the scene along with railway’s rescue teams and machinery.

The passengers trapped under the wreckage were still crying for help when the rescue and relief trains arrived with heavy cutters and other tools to pull them out.

Rescue work was earlier hindered due to darkness and unavailability of required heavy machinery. Also, three to hours were required to bring machinery there from the National Highway, which was 21km from the accident scene but the connecting track was rough and bumpy.

A total of 703 and 505 passengers were travelling in Millat Express and Sir Syed Express, respectively, according to the Pakistan Railways administration.

After the horrific collision, federal Minister for Railways Senator Azam Khan Swati arrived, reviewed rescue work and visited the hospitals where he inquired after the condition of the injured passengers.

Talking to journalists on the occasion, Senator Swati said he had not come for any photo session but he was actually ‘saddened’ by the loss of lives and the casualties. He said those found guilty in this railway incident would not be spared from strict disciplinary action.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah contacted the Sukkur Commissioner Shafiq Ahmed Mahaisar and issued directives for taking immediate steps to coordinate rescue work with the railways divisional and district administrations and ensure proper medical treatment to the injured at hospitals.

In separate statements and messages, President Dr Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Imran Khan, former president Asif Ali Zardari, Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Governor Imran Ismail, former chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and others have expressed their grief over the incident, expressed their sympathies with the families of those killed and injured in the incident and prayed for the departed soul.

In a tweet, PM Khan said he was “shocked by the horrific train accident at Ghotki early this morning leaving 30 passengers dead” and asked the railways minister to reach the site and ensure medical assistance to the injured and support for families of the deceased. The premier also ordered a comprehensive investigation into the railway safety fault lines.

Meanwhile, villagers continued to extend all kind of help and hospitality to the affected people, arranged meals, cold drinks, water and others according to available resources with them.

The death toll from the Ghokti train crash surged to 62 on Tuesday, with authorities finally managing to clear the track 27 hours after the deadly collision took place.

Over 50 were killed and more than 100 were injured when two trains collided near Ghotki in the wee hours on Monday.

The Millat Express had derailed and the Sir Syed Express train hit it soon afterwards, railways officials had confirmed, saying that the collision took place between the Raiti and Obaro railway stations.

DS Sukkur Tariq Latif said the rescue operation had been completed after the government cleared the track, retrieving the 17 coaches that had been affected by the crash and the engine of the train.

"The up and down track has been restored; have received orders to resume train service," he said, adding that the track had been closed since 3:40am Monday morning.

Latif said trains which were unable to continue their journey since Sunday, were allowed to resume their operations. "The speed of trains travelling on affected routes has been kept slow, for the time being," he said.

The death toll rose today after seven more bodies were recovered from the crash site. Out of the 100 injured in the accident, some of them are expected to be in critical condition.

Bodies have started to arrive at people's homes, where burials are taking place. In Lodhran, a large number of people attended the funeral prayers of two brothers, their cousins and mother who all died in the accident.

Ready to resign if my stepping down can bring back those who died in the accident, says railways minister

Meanwhile, Minister for Railways Azam Swati arrived at the crash site to oversee the rescue operations. Swati said if his resignation meant the deceased can come back to life, he was ready to do so.

Promising a comprehensive inquiry, Swati said people will witness that those found responsible in the Ghotki train crash will be punished.

He said train tracks in the Sukkur Division were in poor conditions but added that train tracks were in better condition at the place where the crash took place.

"We have to find out now who is responsible for this accident," he said, adding that 18 people had been punished when the first train accident took place after he held the reins of the ministry.

LAHORE: The Ghotki train accident took place after a track's welding joint broke, causing the Millat Express train to crash onto a down track, says an initial investigation report into the crash.

At least 50 people were killed and over 100 injured during the wee hours of Monday when Sir Syed Express and the Millat Express collided in Pakistan's Dharki town near the Mirpur Mathello railway station.

Sources told Geo News the initial investigation report had been finalised and as per the report, 51 people had died in the crash.

The accident took place when the welding joint of the up track's right side broke, causing 12 coaches of the Millat Express to crash onto a down track.

The Karachi-bound Sir Syed Express, as a result, collided with Millat Express' coaches on the down track, causing the accident.

The engine of Sir Syed Express and four coaches derailed as a result of the accident, said the report, adding that experts were retrieving data from the black boxes of both train engines.

The report, as per sources, stated that the data obtained from the black boxes will be included in the investigation report of the Federal Inspectors of Railways.

Six coaches and the engine of Millat Express did not derail, said the report, adding that 12 passenger coaches of Sir Syed Express also did not derail from the collision.

Sir Syed Express was on its way from Karachi to Rawalpindi, stated the report, adding that Millat Express, on the other hand, was heading towards Sargodha from Karachi.

A little over a day after the accident, the track was restored for train service. DS Sukkur Tariq Latif said the rescue operation had been completed after the government cleared the track, retrieving the 17 coaches that had been affected by the crash and the train's engine.

You guys point scoring against Imran Khan do realise he has ordered a comprehensive investigation into railway safety fault lines following this tragedy right?

You have to judge the current government by assessing their progress rather than making comparisons with other failed politicians.

Before IK came into power, he expected the railway minister to be held accountable and subsequently resign when such incidents take place.

But now it appears he will not stick to his "beliefs" because he doesn't have a shred of credibility. The guy is a fraud.

Time to accept that Belawal bhai.

How do you know he won't ask the railway minister to be held accountable? He's instructed an investigation, for all you know the railway minister could be sacked following the findings.

So they have a magic wand that replaces poor infrastructure that has been left dilapidated over decades and apparently all that in just over 2.75 years:qdkcheeky. So tell me who should rule a country of 220mn? And dont do a Mamoon and ignore the question and run

Ok so now the bahana is 2.75 years.

So by the next incident it would be onoy 5 years?

Bewal remember one thing. The kast railway minsiter, sheikh rasheed was railway minsiter even before. So plz dont use the 2.75 years b.s here. Sheikh rasheed was made railway minister again by immy only to be reshuffled to somewhere else

How do you know he won't ask the railway minister to be held accountable? He's instructed an investigation, for all you know the railway minister could be sacked following the findings.

Lol

Remember the cylinder incident? Sheikh rasheed was not sacked for it nor was he hekd responsibile.

After a while they did reshufling of ministries giving more power to him by making him info minister

Can't even improve the railway infrastructure. What a disgraceful government this is. Blood is on PTI hands whether you PTI cheerleaders like it or not.

This will blow apart. Had it been some other party, the usual fan boys would had been using it as a way why pti should be bought in to power to eridicate suxh problems.

The current govt is a degrace and its supporters are even more disgraceful.

The problem is that the infrastructure is very old. These guys dont care for the dead, if they did they wouldnt be supporting thugs. These losers are desperate to jump on the bandwagon to score a few points.

Why was IK asking to resign the railway minister in 2017?

the thing is, you guys have two different standards for PTI and for others.

IF it's in PTI tenure, blame lies in the old infrastructure.

If it's others, blame goes to authority.

none the less, it was a very sad incident. My prayers with the families.

Because the Nooras are corrupt and they always have been. They should have spent the billions they spent on the Lahore Metro on the railways and had they spent on the dilapidated infrastructure, some of these accidents may not have happened.

I think your big laughing smiley on a thread about 65 deaths on a railway accident sums up your mentality well enough. Let's just leave it at that.

RIP to the victims and condolences to their loved ones. There will be questions asked no doubt, but hopefully it will be to put things right rather than score political points.

Horrific!
We need to upgrade our railway system ASAP!
Our system haven't been upgrade since the British. That paints a picture as to why Railway safety record is at an all time low.
What happened to all the chinese railway infrastructure that was going to be placed?

Funny thing is the last railway minister of pti was someone who had been in the railways in the past aswell :)). Yet they come up with 2.75 years excuse

The death of innocent people brings a smiley. What can we expect from a guy that supports a bunch of crooks from Larkana that have killed 1000s in Thar. As said earlier, you guys are loving these deaths. If Badniyaati had a name

Horrific!
We need to upgrade our railway system ASAP!

I think they are looking at the ML1 but the cost is prohibitive, around $6bn. But the Nooras spent $2bn on Lahore Metro for election and commission purposes, so we have to find the money.

I think your big laughing smiley on a thread about 65 deaths on a railway accident sums up your mentality well enough. Let's just leave it at that.

RIP to the victims and condolences to their loved ones. There will be questions asked no doubt, but hopefully it will be to put things right rather than score political points.

You may have also noticed the badniyaati of these supporters of the mafia. And not one has had the courage to answer my question on accident numbers since 2013. I wonder why?

The smiley is the only thing you guys could critisize.

You cant come to terms that PTI is at fault here. You really care about the people that died, atleast have the guts to critsize the party you support.

yet you lot are blinded and can only call out others

Because the Nooras are corrupt and they always have been. They should have spent the billions they spent on the Lahore Metro on the railways and had they spent on the dilapidated infrastructure, some of these accidents may not have happened.

again, you made a comment of 2.75 years.
Sheiikh Rasheed that was selected by your kaptaan has been in railways more than that time.

Yet you will place the blame on Nooras.

All accidents are failure to some extent and no doubt IK has to take his share of the blame. But When you enjoy deaths to make points, you start to hit lows you never thought your soul could reach. Enjoy your smilies

RIP to all the victims, and I hope the injured ones recovers soon.

Having said that, these PTI/Imran fans are the worst hypocrites in Pakistan. Another one of the U-turns here by Imran Khan, and all his fan girls can do is shift the blame on others.

As you seem to be an expert explain why SS spent nearly $2bn of borrowed money on a metro for Lahore when PR has been crying for investment. Also as you are shouting your mouth off, can you show the stats on accidents since 2013. Otherwise butt out and talk about something you know about

Yea, sure. Anyone who questions the saviour Imran Khan should butt out. Doesn't matter if their hero himself contradicts himself on multiple occasions.

May Allah grant all the deceased jannah and may Allah give sabar to the family members who have lost loved ones. May Allah give hidayat to those who are here to score browny points on people's lives lost.

You haven't grasp the gist of what hypocrisy is about.

In 2017, IK himself said that a railway minister should resign on such incidents.

If same happened under his tenure, why he isn't following the same advice he himself has given to others in past?

As usual, our pti fans are now having problem with anyone critisizing the parties failiure.

Anyways, khyber mail almost had an accident today. No passengers, thus according to firdous ashiq and our pti fans this will not count and will be ignored.

Only when passengers die than it matters

Very tragic incident . RIP to all the dead and speedy recovery to the injured.

Collisions used to be a massive issue even in the Indian Railways till a few years back, so they invested heavily in new technologies like collision warning systems and radar tracking of trains. The results have been very impressive and the accident rates have plummeted. Pakistan Railways must do likewise and invest in new technologies for better safety.

You guys point scoring against Imran Khan do realise he has ordered a comprehensive investigation into railway safety fault lines following this tragedy right?

How do you know he won't ask the railway minister to be held accountable? He's instructed an investigation, for all you know the railway minister could be sacked following the findings.

Read Imran’s statement again:

“I think the Railway Minister should resign. Anywhere in the world, whenever there is a railway accident, the minister resigns because unless he does so, there cannot be any proper inquiry"

He clearly stated that unless the minister resigns, there cannot be any proper inquiry.

So why has the minister not been forced to resign or ousted yet? According to Imran, there cannot be a proper inquiry unless he does so.

So has Imran forgotten what he said or is it simply too easy to run your mouth when you are in the opposition?

This is so sad and RIP to the departed and may those that lost loved ones find the strength to overcome this tragedy.

There only two outcomes that can take the country forward.

1. PTI remains in power for the next ten years (ideally next 15 years) through continued democratic elections.

2. An accelerated procedure whereby the Army takes over and implements IK as the PM/President and they fast track the cull on corruption.

In 2017, IK himself said that a railway minister should resign on such incidents.

The reason was simple- Nooras never could hold any honest enquiries. IK has held enquiries that may well bring down his govt, just look at the Sugar enquiry. He can trust himself, the Nooras couldnt. Tell me what happened to the petrol enquiry or the sugar enquiries when profiteering took place. If you are going to argue you need to give me a link

Sheikh rasheed was never made reponsible for the cylinder blast in the train.

He was after a while reshuffled and still made minister.

The guy is known for inducting.his own people in ministries

India still does have railway accidents. The radar and collision warning systems cannot avoid the unmanned crossings which are just accidents waiting to happen. How will India manage bullet trains with these issues?

Thats because he wasnt . As far as inducting his own people- you have mechanisms that you can use to challenge them. You know Nooras courts like LHC and IHC would have jumped on him. Can you give me reference to these cases.

1. So the minister isnt reponsible for the fact that a cylinder which is not allowed on a train is taken with and ends up causing one of the bigeest train disastors in the country?

Lol mechanisms. Oh bhai. Sheikh rasheed and firdous appa are known for inducting their own people.
You can sue the person being inducted after the ruling party of the minister retires. You cant sue anyone or else youcould get demoted.

All you need is the approval of the head of the organization. If he is into it than the inductions happen easily

Major collisions between trains have not happened in India for a long time. Unmanned level crossings are another issue. People who use them often don't stop to check if a train is approaching and end up paying the price.
No amount of technology can protect a person from stupidity.

Can I just intrude to say that I find your posts/defense very amusing. A few years ago there used to be a lot more Imran supporters, but now you're only one of 2 or 3 remaining, and have the same outlook as Modi-bhakts on our side of the border.

My advice to you is to take it easy. These politicians don't care much for you and neither should you.

A minister is responsible for the policy, he is responsible for its implementation but if the workers on the ground are taking bribes then its they that are responsible. Going on your logic there would be no be left in the PPP Sindh govt because of the death of 1000s in Thar. Are you saying that Billo has to resign because of the deaths?
If they are so well known surely its time for cases. There are many allegations against Sh Rashid but corruption isnt one. With so many haters, surely one case would have stuck. Its not as if he bribes and threatens judges like AZ or NS

As an express train hurtled through farmland in Pakistan and smashed into the carriages of another service that had derailed minutes earlier, a family of nearby villagers was jolted awake.

"The blast of the collision was so loud that we woke up in panic," said Ali Nawaz, describing the start of a frantic bid to help passengers from the wreckage of the double disaster.

"When we came out of the house we saw the train had halted, as we got closer to the scene we heard people calling for help."

At least 63 people were killed, according to officials, with dozens more wounded.

With patchy mobile phone reception and a poor road network, it would be hours before emergency services could reach the site, some 25 kilometres (15 miles) from the nearest city of Daharki, deep in southern Sindh province.

Nawaz's family of around a dozen people lives just 500 metres (550 yards) from the tracks.

The men raced to identify the most seriously wounded passengers to take to hospital by car while those who appeared more stable were loaded onto tractor trailers.

The first passenger, a mother that Nawaz's cousin drove to the hospital, died in the back seat.

Back at the farmhouse, the women raced to fill water containers for the injured in the sweltering summer night.

"They made a chain -- the women would carry water to the midway point from where the men would carry it to the passengers," 63-year-old Nawaz told AFP, cows and calves roaming the courtyard of his single-story brick home.

- 'We did the best we could' -
Hundreds of disorientated passengers emerged from the trains, slowly grasping the magnitude of the crash, which destroyed six carriages.

They joined villagers in searching for survivors, clambering over the crumpled carriages to reach those trapped inside.

Seat benches from the trains were turned into beds to carry people away, and bodies lined up on the ground and respectfully covered with scarves.

"I kept working day and night -- cooking meals, bread and tea -- and my husband and other male members of the family kept supplying them to the victims and rescue workers," said Habiba Mai, one of Nawaz's two wives.

As dawn broke, an injured passenger and her three children staggered to the house.

"I milked my cow to feed her little daughter," said 40-year-old Mai.

"The woman's face was stained with dust so I washed it with water. She had no slippers on her feet so I gave her mine."

Outside their home on Tuesday, army personnel were resting on traditional charpoy benches under neem trees.

An officer, who did not want to be named, pulled up to reward the family with 50,000 rupees for aiding the rescue effort.

"She's a hero," said Muneer Ahmed, Mai's brother-in-law.

Mai stood next to her daughter, giving tea to the visitors still gathering outside the house in the evening, the walls blackened by smoke.

"My fingers have almost burnt sitting at the stove day and night," she said, smiling.

"We did the best we could."

Nice

No I am not and If he has he has to go to jail. We have higher hopes and expectations of the PTI and its govt. We are not a mafia party run for the benefit of crooked families like the PPP and the Nooras.
BTW based on your criteria on the railway deaths, do you think Billo should resign as the Chairman of the PPP because of the 1000s of deaths of children and adults in Thar due to the direct corruption, incompetentce and neglect of his crooked party?

Not surprising to see the usual suspects take cheap shots at Imran Khan over a tragedy.

The real reason that Pakistan Railways is a mess is because of politicians, mostly PPP, and the Army.

What politicians did was overstaff the Railways with not only too many employees, but mostly incompetent people who cant be fired regardless of what they do. Any attempt to reduce the number of employees or fire bad ones leads to mass protest, and stay orders from the court. Their is limited money to improve the railways because of overstating, and worthless employees.

The Army created the NLC which siphoned of the freight business of the Railways. Freight was subsidizing the loss making parts of the railway business.

What needs to happen is for the Railways, and NLC are privatized, or made into a public-private partnership, where management is in the hands of the private sector.

Imran Khan has started to do this

It was further briefed that in order to bring down revenue losses in Railways, four trains have already been privatized while work on privatizing 15 more trains is under process.

https://arynews.tv/en/imran-khan-railways-trains-privatized/

Nine Railways officials were suspended on Wednesday for their alleged negligence that caused the recent horrific collision between two trains in Daharki – killing at least 65 passengers and injuring around 100 others.

Railways Minister Azam Khan Swati suspended Mansoor Anwar, Mujeed Rehman, Shaukat Ali Shaikh, Nehal Khan, Ibtesam-ul-Hassan, Shamsuddin and Ghulam Qadir, according to a notification.

Millat Express was heading from Karachi to Sargodha on Monday morning when it derailed, spilling carriages onto the track carrying Sir Syed Express from Rawalpindi in the opposite direction.

Earlier in the day, the minister while addressing a news conference in Lahore, conceded that when Millat Express left Karachi, its carriages were shaking.

He added that carriage number 10 of the train was missing buffers and its bolts were broken as well.

The minister said he was present at the site of the accident until the entire track was restored.

He elaborated that 63 people had died in the accident and 20 others were currently being treated at hospitals for injuries – three of them in a serious condition.

“Twelve carriages derailed that caused the accident.”

The minister said the although the lives lost in the accident were “priceless”, the heirs of the deceased would be given a sum of Rs1.5 million each by the government as compensation.

“Every injured person will be provided between Rs50,000 and Rs300,000.”

Swati maintained that it was unlikely that a fault in the eight-mile stretch of railway tracks was responsible for the accident.

The tracks where the accident occurred had recently undergone maintenance on a stretch of eight miles.

The minister said he himself and other senior personnel had inspected the site of the accident themselves.

However, he added that it could only be determined when the final report arrived.

Swati pointed out that the rescue train reached the scene after a delay of two hours.

He added that an investigation into the mishap was under way and whoever was found guilty of negligence would be punished accordingly.

Swati claimed that nothing had been spent to upgrade the tracks since 2014.

He said a sum of Rs620 billion was needed to overhaul the entire railway system. “ I will meet the prime minister and take up this issue.”

The minister said if his resignation could heal the wounds of the victims, he was prepared to step down.

Swati further said he had decided to appoint an experienced army officer with expertise in conducting investigations and another individual in the aviation ministry to carry out the probe into the tragedy.

The rail traffic remained disrupted on the main line, delaying the arrival and departure of various trains after two passenger trains collided near Ghotki earlier this week, it emerged on Thursday.

According to reports, the departure of various passenger trains from Lahore to various destinations experience long delays almost on a daily basis due to various operational issues.

Lahore-Karachi Awam Express train was delayed by 4 hours, while the Karachi Express from Karachi was delayed by two and a half hours, railways sources said.

Several train operations, including Lahore-Karachi Karakoram, Lahore Jinnah Express train, Lahore Green Line train, were delayed by two hours.

The terrible Ghotki train tragedy had left 65 people dead with more than 100 people injured.
The Pakistan Army on Tuesday said that the relief and rescue operation in the Ghotki passenger train accident had been completed.

"Train engine bogies removed from track," the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release.

"Efforts are underway to open railway track after necessary repair and maintenance."

The incident occurred when a Karachi-bound train ploughed into the derailed bogies of a Sargodha-bound express near the border between Sindh and Punjab provinces in the wee hours of June 7.

It is pertinent to mention that the condition of the main line, especially Sukkur-Karachi sections, is dilapidated and has been considered dangerous for a safe train operation, as train accidents become rampant.

What do you expect from a society that places little value on human life ? There's been countless plane crashes and train accidents over the years killing many innocent people. What has come of it ?

Where are the top-to-bottom institutional reforms, accountability of officials for gross negligence, investigative reporting etc. ?

Govt will hand out some compensation and life goes on until the next tragedy.

IK has morally hold responsible towards the minister in charge when he was in opposition.

Lets say X was railway minister. Did he overstaff the department. Probably yes or probably no (may have happened before). if it has happened before his tenure, should X be morally responsible?

No one has stated that the railway minister should be fired except IK. And when it came to his tenure, he moved away from what he preached.

This U turn is why he has been criticized. Not only PP but even al Jazeera interview he was questioned about U turn. He had no answer to that. He just admitted to have U TURNS time to time.

When you make U turns time to time, you lose your reputation, integrity in the eyes of others.

All politicians take u turns. They say one thing when in opposition and another thing while in office.

However Imran Khan is held to a much higher degree of scrutiny. I dont think other politicians get criticized as much as he does for political theater.

Pakistan needs to switch to bullet trains

Cant afford it.

Pakistan cannot afford to have bullet trains on par with foreign nations, the country's railway minister has said, citing lack of market for the high- speed rail project.

Khawaja Saad Rafique yesterday told the National Assembly that even the Chinese advice was against such train, also known as bullet train in common parlance, Dawn reported.

"When we asked the Chinese about it, they laughed at us. We should consider the 160 kmph train under CPEC as a bullet train. We cannot afford an actual bullet train, there is no market for it," the railway minister said.

He is held to a higher degree of scrutiny because he hyped himself up as a messiah and claimed that he is different and not like all politicians.

When you put yourself on a pedestal, you will be held to a higher degree of scrutiny.

Pakistan needs to switch to bullet trains

Pakistan first needs to upgrade its existing railways. We often call our railways antique, but Pakistan railways make our railways look modern, and that takes some doing.

Pakistan needs to first electrify its existing lines. It needs to build a suburban rail transport in major cities, none of the Pakistani cities have any decent suburban rail network like the ones you find in Delhi, Mumbai, Madras or Kolkata. Karachi has a very small network that runs on diesel locomotives. Suburban network is the major mode of transportation for poor people. Not everyone can afford the daily prices of a metro train.

Then Pak railways needs to start investing in semi high speed rails (that run around 160kmph) for selected routes. High speed railway is still a pipe dream for the subcontinent as a semi high speed rail can run on modified existing railway lines, but bullet trains require special tracks that cost a lot of money for every km. And there's the problem of land acquisition that will take a lot of years. India is planning to build a bullet train line between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, but it's still stuck in land acquisition phase in some segments and is settling to develop phase by phase first in Gujarat.

It's simply impractical to expect Pakistan railways to make the jump from existing outdated network directly to High speed Railway which is probably why the Chinese laughed when asked for assistance.

There's no prerequisite that you have electrify your current railway infrastructure and then move to high speed rail, if Pakistan can raise the funds then they can invest in getting the railway infrastructure ready for bullet trains, heck they could go scorched earth on the current infrastructure and build from scratch cause like I said there's no law or principle that you have to first reach an intermediate state of high speed rail like India and then move to bullet trains.

I don't keep up to date with Pakistani local news but you're incorrect about Pakistan not having urban rail transport, Lahore literally just built one very recently and I believe other cities are in line to get their own commuter train system.

Well yeah of course there's no rule. But it's not practical what you're saying. You need hella lot of money for what you're advocating. Theoretically, even Afghanistan can build a bullet train network for themselves like the Shinkansen, but they don't have the means to do that.

It is practically impossible for the developing nations to build their own bullet train network without assistance from the economic giants like China, Japan, etc., because it is very expensive to lay a single line of bullet train network connecting just two nearby cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad. A country has to pass through gradual stages of economic development, wherein they can afford increasing advanced modes of transport with increasing economy. Otherwise all poor countries would have bullet trains running everywhere in their countries instead of shanty old trains.

What you're referring to is called mass rapid transit or urban railway or metro trains in colloquial terms which is for transit within parts of a city.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_transit

Metro trains are costly to build and are usually built with the help of generous soft loans from other richer countries. It's for that reason, the tickets are usually a bit expensive so as to payback the loans and is a mode of transportation for the elites.

The poor people who transit from the suburbs and towns situated on the outskirts of the city for daily work cannot use metro trains as it's not large enough to cover suburbs and towns on the outskirts. The Lahore metro is operational in just 27 kms which will barely cover a part of a city. For this purpose, you need commuter rail or suburban railway.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commuter_rail

Cities like Mumbai and Chennai have both metro trains that operate within the city and suburban trains that are used by most people to commute for work.

This is the Chennai metro train:

images (15).jpg

This is the Chennai suburban train:

images (16).jpeg

Note the difference in crowds using the both trains services. Pakistani cities should get something like the suburban train for their people. Karachi is the only city I think that has a circular railway but that too has very little network coverage and is a diesel locomotive.
