NEW DELHI – In what can be termed a hatred against a minority, a minor Muslim boy was killed in broad daylight on Thursday by the four Hindu children in New Delhi.

The deceased identified as 8-year-old Azeem was a student of a madrassa named Dar ul Uloom Faridiya.

He was playing cricket with other students of the madrassa in a vacant plot near the seminary when a group of Hindu children from the nearby areas aged, 10-12, attacked the students who were playing.

During the incident, the attackers threw Azeem on a motorcycle rickshaw parked near the plot and the minor student fell unconscious on the spot.

The other students ran back to the madrassah-cum-mosque to call the cleric. The unconscious boy was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors.

In a video circulating of social media, the madrassah cleric said that they were running the seminary since 1988 in the area, adding that the local extremist Hindus wanted to occupy it by spreading hate against Muslims and religious disharmony. “They [Hindu people] used to attack our children and elders,” he said.

The madrassa-cum-mosque have repeatedly been vandalized by Hindus and empty whiskey bottles are often thrown inside the seminary premises to disturb the Muslim, he said.

The cleric added that the police have not taken any action against the brutal act so far.

It is not a communal matter, it was an accident: Father of madrasa student killed in scuffle

Jama Masjid Sarai Shahji, was a non-descript mosque until Thursday, in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. On Friday, it was swarmed by hundreds including policemen, members of student unions, community welfare groups, politicians, lawyers, media and local residents.

On Thursday, an 8-year-old boy, Mohammad Azeem, who studied in a madrasa inside the mosque died during a scuffle some minor boys from the adjacent JJ cluster. Azeem and his three friends had fought with the minor boys after an argument over a playing space. Police have apprehended the four juveniles and registered a case of murder.

Deputy commissioner of police (south), Vijay Kumar said the four boys were sent to a juvenile home on Friday. The officer said Azeem did not have any external injury and that his autopsy reports are awaited to ascertain the cause of death.

A day after the incident, Azeem’s father, Khaleel Ahmed a resident of Mewat in Haryana, said, that the death was caused due to an accident and that he does not want it to be politicised. Ahmed, a farmer by profession said, “ Please do not politicise my son’s death. This is not a communal matter. It was an accident. I used to speak to him regularly. He never suggested that he was being bothered or troubled by anyone.”

Since Azeem’s death, local police and senior officers were on guard to ensure that there was no law and order problem. Lawyers and local welfare bodies on Friday swarmed the mosque to sort the dispute over the playing space. Most employees at the madrasa said the play ground is the bone of contention between them and the adjacent JJ cluster residents.

Maulana Mohammad Ali Johar,an Imam at the mosque, said if the property remains disputed fights will go on. The Imam said that the property belonged to them.

The residents of the nearby JJ cluster, however, refuted allegations and accused the madrasa employees of trying to encroach upon their land. Police said the case of the land’s entitlement is subjudice.

Narrating the sequence of events leading to Azeem’s death, an 8-year-old boy, who was with Azeem said, “The five boys threw firecracker and stones at us. We were four and there were five. They thrashed Azeem and threw him on a motorcycle and a rickshaw, after which he fell unconscious. We informed our teachers who took him to the hospital,” the 8-year-old boy said.

The madrasa staff rushed Azeem to a hospital where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.

I will take the Dad's word. Not every such matter is due to religious bigotry. Delhi has a strong Muslim population I believe.

Rest in peace.

And a big respect to the father. This incident could have caused more damage, hatred between the community but he came in front. He's a true man.

8 year old dead. 3 10yr olds in remand home. It doesnot get worse than this. Cant even fathom what to say.

My condolences to the family of the kid. Also much respect to the father for coming out and issuing this statement in the midst of a social media campaign to paint this incident in communal colour. Well done Sir.

Delhi is a violent city and it seems that the habits are now being passed on to children much earlier than they would naturally. Last year a school boy slit a junior kids throat simply to get the exams postponed in a school in a gurgaon near Delhi.

Delhiites, you need to learn some humility and patience and pass on the same traits to the kids.

Not being the one to give this a communal colour but I don’t rule out either If the anger this kid became a victim of originated from the 10 year old children’s hatred for Muslim. It is a fact that India ever since BJP took over power in 2014 has been heavily communalised. People openly discuss their hate for Muslims now. Hindu family functions and gatherings often result in heavy bashing of Muslims as the talks get political. The kids absorb it from adults and take it to schools and abuse each other. I remember Sikh kids in my school always bashing the Pakistani migrant Sikh community calling them Bhape, Bhapaji all the time (mocking their accent/talking style), and they would often gang up and beat up those kids too. Children can be very evil too.

Just because we all wannabe sensible and not make thins worse doesn’t mean we rule out kids are learning hatred from adults and taking it to schools. It’s a fact and we need to act on it.

Minority school kids are often bullied.
