“But if they cease, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression” Al-Qur’an 2:192-193]

This verse can be interpreted as being a command to Muslim states to identify and retaliate against the oppression of Muslims (or any other people for that matter). But in the modern world you either have Muslim countries looking the other way out of self interest while Muslim communities like the Uyghur, Rohingya, Kashmiris, Palestinians etc suffer or you have so called “Muslim” countries themselves oppressing and tormenting other Muslim communities and their innocent people. Such as Saudi Arabia committing atrocities in Yemen and not too long ago, the way our country treated East Pakistan (best do your own research in regards to that). Muslim countries today are either weak, selfish or hypocritical.

Islam is the fastest growing religion and there is often a lot of love within Islamic communities towards each other and towards other communities. But when it comes to the big picture, have we failed?

The context should be in religious terms or can someone show the shortcomings of a religion as a whole (not just Islam) ?

I asked because if it's specific to Quran verse, then above will be unnecessary and off topic.

Elaborate please

The verse has to be seen in context. It was probably revealed at a time where Muslims were in a position to be able to fight oppression, and perhaps were on a level playing field with their opponents.

How would it apply today? I don't really think it can apply. As you yourself have said, they are weak in material terms, forget anything else. The most they can do is make a bit of noise, and at the same time try to avoid upsetting the big boys.

What about they themselves being the oppressor. Such as the example of Saudi Arabia

What about it? There was no Saudi Arabia at the time that verse was revealed, the country itself is named after a family line is it not? It's a dynasty above all else from what I can tell, I don't think they make any claims to represent all Muslims. Same goes for Iran if you want to look at the big player on the other side. They are representative of Shia sect, not all encompassing Muslim world.

People keep talking about Muslim oppression and while I disagree with the oppression and discrimination of any human beings for following their religion or culture or on the basis of color but my question is can some one point me to the stellar human rights record of minorities in Islamic countries?

Two wrongs don’t make a right but oppression is a political and power thing than a selected bias against only one religion. Happens everywhere. Not that it should but it does.

I didn’t say that only Muslims communities are marginalized or that all Muslim communities are marginalized on the basis of religion

They don’t represent Shia sect either at least not all of it.

Ever since the dissolution of Ottoman Empire, Muslims have become divided and weaker.

Muslim states are now governed by spineless rulers.

I'd ignore the usual divert topics.

Very good thread.

The issue the fall of the Ottoman Empire yieled puppet Muslim nations , the biggest one is Saudi Arabia. The leaders are also custodians of the holy mosques, giving them influence over the Muslim world, the oil obviously hasn't helped.

The solution is straight foward, turn off the oil tap even if it means the world economy is ruined, the oppressors will soon change their tone and actions. The problem is US has bases all over the middle east to protect the dictatorships who are doing their work very well.

No Empires return, Egypt, Rome, Persia, Britain but the Islamic Empire is always dorment and ready to bounce back which it will Godwilling. When the Petrodollar dies, it will be the start of new era. Sadly WW3 could also be a possibility but one way or another Islamic nations will again rise sooner or later.

I still think world War 3 will happen between all Muslim countries that's my take

Do you mean rest of the world vs Muslim countries or between the Muslim countries?

Well last time a situation arose Pakistan and USA were allies especially when USA was fighting not one but 2 Muslim countries in Iraq and Afghanistan.

So not sure if religion has been a driving force.

Other example was Bangladesh war where native tongue and culture was put before religion on both sides.

So not sure that will ever be the case. Countries will pick and chose sides that will benefit them the most rather than just go based on religion.

The concept of a monolithic Muslim world has been and always will be a delusion. As is the romanticized notion that all Muslim empires or kingdoms of the past were flawless models of justice and piety. It is high time that we stop living in the past and instead try to build a better world for ourselves in the present.

This was the verse given by the Muslim rulers justifying their actions during the civil wars of the times of hadrat ali and uthman ra

Abdullah ibn omar has said this verse only referred to oppression under pagan Makka and not during caliphate

Interestingly enough the tafsir of the Ayah refers to the coming back of the Messiah hadrat Isa as
