Yes. South Africa - thrown out in 1970 - reinstated in 1991.

We have some members jumping up and down in glee watching SA being knocked out etc but do they realize the tremendous achievement this country has in terms of cricket (keep other political/race issues out of it) of maintaining an A Class domestic structure and ready supply of World-Class players which many others can only dream of?

Hats off to South Africa - winning a big tournament which happens every few years may be great for the trophy collector types but providing a reason to be proud of throughout the year is another level of greatness which we should all appreciate.

Tbh South Africa is 1 because of bilateral series where most of the teams dont play full strength teams they do in tournaments and use it for tryouts etc.

SA recently whitewashed an Oz team filled with newbies. Also when SA defeated India Shami was rested as was Jadeja and Ashwin who are India's best ODI bowlers. Ashwin/Jadeja even skipped the NZ ODI series recently for rest after a test series so bilaterals aren't a true test of skill. It's in ICC tournaments where teams send their first XIs. Even Kepler Wessels agrees to that.

Are you actually able to absorb the fact that a team was unable to play international cricket for 21 years?

What you are stating above are feeble excuses that any team can make for itself.

The sheer skill level of their players throughout history can only be matched by Australia

Every Pakistani fan who has followed every match of Pakistan since 1992 world cup can tell you that they have been a very tough side to beat even when we were playing with our greats, still remember the terrific spells from Waqar Younis against South Africa in a tri-series of Pak/SA/WI back in 1993 but then there was a phase we continuously lost 10+ ODIs against them.

Most of us during that phase knew that we would lose every ODI we played against them. We somehow recovered from that mental blockage against them but I would never ever take them lightly considering their history in mind. They have been a terrific side in cricket.

Cricket fans across the globe saw what they did in 1992 World cup, Allan Donald bursting onto the scene with terrific spells of fast bowling, Johnty Rhodes "that" run out, their overall skills as a fielding unit was just something new to the cricketing world which set the precedence for other teams to improve their fielding drastically.

I hope they repeat their performances of bilateral series in a major ICC Tournament. Everything has an end somewhere, they will have their day but no one knows, when?

They were banned 21 years ago. That has nothing to do with today. They shoulb be embarrassed by today's performance. I thought AB would chance SA fortunes in big tournaments but it not happening despite being filled with a team full of great players

Have always had a soft spot for South Africa and the brand of cricket they play. We Pakistanis rely on aggression, flair, unpolished talent and individual brilliance while the Saffers have the mantra of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Each person in the team has a function to perform and when these functions are performed like a well-oiled machine it drives to the team to the number one in the rankings.

For some odd reason this methodical approach goes out the window when it comes to ICC events, perhaps a case of not enough time to properly assess and plan for each individual match.

South African cricket became 'whites only' from 1918 to 1994

South Africa are fortunate not to have been banned for 76 years

This is a reply from a good South African friend of mine who would like to be known as a well-wisher for SA Cricket.

True, although many more great players should come true the ranks, but they are forced ply their trade overseas and not in and for their home country due to political interference. Since 1994, the ANC government has has not been able to set a system in place to develop sportsmen and women in South Africa from school up. They have only achieved introducing racism in sports, disguised as the quota system or affirmative action. Not only has the ANC harmed sports in SA, but throughout the world! No country in the world today fears playing against South Africa because they field their best players. South African teams are weakened by Government selection policies and most other teams feel sorry for South African teams. When is the world and international sports bodies going to put a stop to racism in sports and stop turning a blind eye to it.

A few South Africans who have left SA to play overseas due to Racial Sports Policies by the ANC Government:

Kevin Peterson, Matt Prior, Straus, Trott, Johan Botha, Abbott, Rousouw, Simon Harmer, Stiaan van Zyl, David Wiese, Rory Kleinveldt, Colin Ingram, Richard Levi and Hardus Viljoen, Kruger van Wyk, Grant Elliot, Neil Wagner, Keaton Jennings etc. And the list goes on...

This list is limited to the last few years...

If SA had to select their best possible team of their strongest and best players, they would be awesome. And every team around the world know they were in for a tough match Not a walkover like this tournament

Select a team of the players who have gone to ply their trade overseas, and get them to play against the current Proteas. I bet the overseas based players would win

I so wish the world would stand up and ban SA for political and racial sports policies.

SA have a lot of problems because of the ridiculous quota system and a very corrupt favouritism based government.

I really think they need a good hard nosed coach - they play far too often like scared kittens on the big occasion.

Nerves get to them, even their top players.

Oh bhai, they have been Number 1 for many years yet never won anything. No need to make excuses for their defeatist attitude.

If there is one team that has matched Australia's style of cricket then it has to be South Africa. I think they were the only team that couldn't get beaten by Pakistan in the UAE.

South Africa is a great allround team even after the quotas which limits its full potential.

Call them chokers all you want, but a match with SA is never easy for any country.

I think the problem with SA is that they dont realize what their strength is. They dont utilize their strength fully.

What has Pakistan won? WHat has Sri Lanka won? Yes both team won something 20 years ago. But what about after that?

South Africa doesn't need to win ICC trophies to prove their worth. As long as they stay top in the rankings all is good.

You got New Zealand that does good in ICC tournies but not good in rankings. But if you ask people which team is better, SA would be chosen

No. 1 because of useless bilaterals which no one watches except for indians. Being no. 1 has no value when u cant stamp your authority when it mattera that is big tourneys. Australia of 2000 was no. and won every major tournament of that era with authority and by manhandling opposition teams. South africa has nothing of that sort..

West Indies won WOrld T20, but even yet they are viewed as joke of a team.

ICC tournament wins do matter, but so do rankings.

South Africa always had a good domestic league. And I don't mean to sound racist or anything, but have you seen the South African economy lately since apartheid ended? Yikes! When the گھٹنے were in power they kept things professional. Again I'm not trying to sound racist, but it's just a fact.

The problem west indies board and players have imagine if same would happen to south africa.. The T20 team which played for west indies if they play one day and test... there team would be much better.

The joke of a team has 2 world cups, 2 t20 world cups , 1 Icc champion trophy to its name what does your no.1 ranked side has??
west indies has the song champion to boast about their achievent whereas SAFs has chokers tag on them

South Africans have always been a No 1 or No 2 side in International Cricket, their standards have always been high.

Yet all will choose SA over WI as their favourite anyday!

More likely something to do with the Afrikaner national myth - very good in dogged defence, but when they have to come out of their circle of ox wagons and win they don't really know what to do.

A bit like the English, come to think of it.
