New Delhi: A wall is being constructed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to hide a slum cluster from the view of US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The wall is over half-a-kilometre long and seven feet high.
The two have planned a roadshow in the city on February 24.

The wall is being constructed on the road leading from the Ahmedabad airport to Gandhinagar as part of a beautification plan that has been rolled out ahead of Trump’s visit. He is scheduled to address a huge gathering at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad at the end of the roadshow.

The ‘Kem Chho Trump’ event is being seen as Modi’s reciprocative gesture to the US president for joining him at the ‘Howdy Modi’ gathering in Houston last year.

As part of the preparations for the event, a lot of infrastructural work has been undertaken all around Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

The wall in question is coming up in front of the Dev Saran or Saraniyavaas slum area, which has been in existence for several decades and houses over 500 tenements. The place is home to over 2,500 people and the manner in which the wall is being constructed to mask it has posed questions around the mindset which has driven the exercise.

Earlier, when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife Akie Abe had visited Gujarat for the 12th India-Japan annual summit in 2017, and then for the Vibrant Gujarat Summit the same year, a beautification drive was undertaken but attempts were not made to hide any part of the city’s life from the visiting dignitaries.

Probably its the other way around: The slums should be protected from the sight of such an obnxious human being

Hope trump visits every week different parts of India for next 5 years, only then we can have better development. Otherwise municipal corporations and Politicians don't care.

If you are looking for development, I don't think building a wall to hide the slums is the answer.

India has slums every where. You cannot hide them. Too many migrants from poorer areas of the country pour into cities which are already crowded.

India should accept the reality and stop being something that it is not.

The slums of India reminded me of an exceptional good (but a bit too long) read called Shantaram. Gives a glimpse of how the people live in slums.

Why not put that money for the wall and actually build housing for these poor people??

Trump every week how much expenses it will take,I would say every month or once in 3-4 months will be ok.

If I were Indian, I would be proud to show the Don the slums as it is a part of India.

Each to their own I guess.

We also have lots of slum guys no need to act high and mighty

India slum-dwellers sent eviction notices ahead of Trump visit

Slum-dwellers in the city of Ahmedabad say they have been served eviction notices by municipal authorities as the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to host US President Donald Trump on February 24.

The slum is close to the Motera Stadium where Modi and Trump are expected to attend an event dubbed "Kem Chho Trump" (How are you, Trump) along the lines of the "Howdy Modi" extravaganza the US president organised for the Indian prime minister in Houston last September.

Tejabhai Meda, 36, who works as a labourer and earns Rs 300 ($4.2) a day, is in shock. "I have been living here for the past 22 years," he told Al Jazeera. "I don't know what to do. On one side, the government is saying it is helping poor people in constructing new homes but here we are being evicted from a piece of land."

"We are not asking the government for homes, we are saying give us a piece of land where we can live," the father of three said, adding that until last month nobody had bothered them.

The authorities in Gujarat state have also faced criticism for erecting a 400-metre (1,312-foot) long, two-metre (seven-foot) high wall to prevent the US leader from seeing a slum.

A senior government official, however, told Reuters the wall was being built for security reasons, not to conceal the slum district, which houses an estimated 800 families.

But the contractor building it said the government "did not want the slum to be seen" when Trump passes by the area.

Meda says he, along with 44 other families, was asked by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday to leave the plot, but the municipal body has denied it.

"The news report is incorrect and misleading," AMC Commissioner Vijay Nehra told Al Jazeera. "In fact, it can be called mischievous as it tries to link the issue with 'Namaste Trump' event. There are no plans for any forceful evictions in the near future."

An AMC official told Al Jazeera that the slum dwellers were "encroaching on government land".

"We have asked them before as well to clear the site but they refused, saying we should follow due process and give them notices. And when we issued notices now, everybody is linking the issue with Trump's visit," Kishore Varna said.

But Mina Jadhav, general secretary of Majdur Adhikar Manch, a trade union working for unorganised workers in Gujarat, linked the eviction to Trump's visit to Ahmedabad.

"The BJP government doesn't want the world to see that poverty exists in Gujarat. They want Trump and others to see only the big buildings, roads and that everyone here has toilets and homes," she said.

"They (the government) want to hide the poor people living in slums, that is why it has sent the eviction notices to these families and built a wall to shield Trump from noticing another slum."

Nehra, the AMC commissioner, tweeted on Sunday that more than 100,000 participants had registered so far to greet Trump as he heads from the airport to the city centre. Trump said last week Modi had promised "millions and millions" of people would line his route.

The event provides Trump, who was impeached in December, with the opportunity to woo hundreds of thousands of Indian-American voters ahead of the US presidential election in November.

Trump is also expected to visit the humble abode of India's independence leader Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad.

Authorities in Ahmedabad expect to spend 800 to 850 million Indian rupees ($11-12m) on preparations for the first India visit by the US president, Reuters reported quoting officials.

Trump, who has made his pledge to build a wall along the US's border with Mexico a feature of his presidency, will visit India on February 24-25 to reaffirm strategic ties that have been buffeted by trade disputes.

Maybe Trump can outsource his southern border wall to the same people? He desperately needs that wall he promised his voters.. but Mexico just won’t pay for it!

I pity the poor of this country. There's poverty everywhere. Why hide it? Everyone knows it. Also they could have build homes instead of wall right? What a dumb government

Some Indians worship Trump, they will be relieved their God wont puke when seeing some parts of their nation.

Guys this news must be fake we are in 2020 and slums don't exist in supa powa India.

Trump is like a black cat. His presence is bad for people no matter where he goes.

14 years CM + 6 years PM, still this guy has to make walls to hide poverty. Gujrat model LMAO

:))

This is what happenes when you value style over substance.

Frauds eventually get exposed.

Takes time but truth eventually comes out.

I am surprised Modiji didn't consider the PR damage this wall building exercise would cause.

Gujarat shining?

Gujarat model of development? And to think, our gullible electorate elected this guy on the basis of that development model....

This is not a new thing in India. Forget Trump, I grew up in Bihar and when a DRM/ Minister used to visit they used to remove all road side hawkers, cover the potholes etc.

Considering the source is 'The Wire', I know exactly what the agenda behind this piece but its a regular event in India.

"We're Not Treated Very Well By India": Trump Raises Doubt On Trade Deal

Washington, United States: US President Donald Trump has said he is "saving the big deal" with India for later and he "does not know" if it will be done before the presidential election in November, clearly indicating that a major bilateral trade deal during his visit to Delhi next week might not be on the cards.

"We can have a trade deal with India. But I'm really saving the big deal for later," he told reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday afternoon (local time).

President Trump is scheduled to visit India on February 24 and 25.

Asked whether he expects a trade deal with India before the visit, President Trump said, "We're doing a very big trade deal with India. We'll have it. I don't know if it'll be done before the election, but we'll have a very big deal with India."

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the point-person for trade negotiations with India, is not likely to accompany President Trump to India, sources said. However, officials have not ruled it out altogether.

In an apparent dissatisfaction over US-India trade ties, President Trump said, "We're not treated very well by India." But he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he is looking forward to his visit to India.

"I happen to like Prime Minister Modi a lot," President Trump said.

"He told me we'll have seven million people between the airport and the event. And the stadium, I understand, is sort of semi under construction, but it's going to be the largest stadium in the world. So it's going to be very exciting... I hope you all enjoy it," he told reporters.

Gujarat model of development,

Gujarat stood at 22nd rank among Indian states in the Human Development Index for 2018.

This is far below than some of so called “poor performing” states of Jammu & Kashmir (at 17) Uttarakhand (at 19) and Nagaland (at 20). The Infant Mortality Rate of Gujarat in 2016 stood at 30 per 1,000 live births, far poorer than that of states like Jharkhand (29 per 1000 live births) and Jammu & Kashmir (24 per 1000 live births).

Another sensitive index of human development, namely the Maternal Mortality Rate was 91 per 1,00,000 live births in Gujarat in 2016 as compared to 66 in Tamil Nadu and 88 in Telangana in the same year.

Some development this is! What will a state do with its developed tag if its residents come at only 22/30 states as far as HDI is concerned....

Of course, if that fake tag helps you win elections after elections, then its alright as this is the only motive of an elected government.

Not a bad idea, but instead they could have bought nice clothes for these slum dwellers and get them standing in a queue holding bouquets and pro Trump placards. Would have pleased our most honourable and esteemed guest more than a wall with Modi-Trump graphiti where it will be written" yahan peshaab karna mana hai".

I see some posters are missing from this thread. Let’s see if they post now because I think they read every post in this thread carefully.

Fake news Pakistan is just jealous that India is a rich developed country with no poverty left.

Well, my dear US military friend mustang is missing otherwise I could have asked him what terms his President would use to describe India if the wall wasn't blocking the view. We did discuss this quite thoroughly in the Bangladesh thread, but this would be a much more suited place to do it.

While I don’t agree with the methods employed but if this were true there are so many homeless bums in the downtown areas of major cities in the US that don’t think, US will be in a rush to show them off to heads of other nations either.

A diplomatic visit is usually about trade and mutual benefits, and just like during any business or trade related exchange this is about showing the strengths and hiding weakness.

Modi’s job is to attract investments from Trump and he is doing what it takes just like any world leader would. As far as slums and poverty go it is a reality that exists in 90% of the world, more in some places than the others, so not sure why we have to use that to score points on a forum

Trump or no one from outside of the country is going to come in and say "WOW INDIA IS COOL". Everyone already knows how India is. This just looks pathetic.

You just tried to score points by comparing slums of NYC (non existent) with the slums of India.

No one is building wall around homeless in NYC for Modi’s visit.

His apologists are hilarious and beyond any hope...Will offer any excuse to make their master look good.

I’m guessing trump also hides the slums of New York City, Miami and Boston whenever I visit because I couldn’t locate any despite roaming around a lot .

Way to miss the context of my post. I already said it’s a dumb idea to hide existing issues.

However no one flaunts problems during an important diplomatic visit.

Do you think a international head of state’s car even from an insignificant country will be allowed to pass through some areas downtown Philadelphia or South side of Chicago? Surprisingly Imran Khan was allowed to take public transport in DC though :))

Flaunting and hiding are two different things, India is building a wall to hide its poverty.

Stop comparing US with India when it comes to public transport, roads, and law and order. You are never going to come on top.

Downtown Philly isn’t slum. Try to visit.

What does IK mode of transportation in US has to do with anything other than it shows that there’s no comparison between US and India.

seriously? Not sure where the disconnect is happening with what I am communicating but let me try this again

I picked USA say as the benchmark as it is the most powerful country in the world. I said even they Would not prefer to show places that might leave a bad taste for visiting head of states leave alone India.

Let me put this in a cricket context to see if it works as it is a cricket forum, PCB invites 2nd string teams and gives full presidential level security even in their main centers like Lahore,Karachi. Would they risk this in smaller centers even with the same security? I am not taking a dig here because props to them for trying to make a statement but the bigger picture is they are trying to get cricket back to Pakistan. You can nitpick either ways about the amount of security in big centers but the bigger picture and goal is to get cricket back.

This is on similar lines as these visits result in investments and other strategic deals. So there is a chance having a slum right amidst the route may take away some focus from what is to be discussed. I am not taking it will a 100% but it is a patchwork because problems like that can’t be fixed overnight.

I am not sure of the method employed which I already acknowledged but the thinking behind it makes total sense.

Slums do not exist in US and US does not need to build a wall to hide poverty. Not that difficult to understand.

Slums do exist in USA but there is a big difference between their slums and our slums.

I don’t think apart from rare occasions here and there, people form colonies in USA by making houses with sheets, sleep on the floor etc.

There is no shame in accepting that a large percentage of our population still lives under poverty line. Sadly nobody is bothered about them. Its all about spending money on Defence, Glamour, Statues & Idols etc. Sad but True.

‘A first in 60 years’: Wall to hide slum during Donald Trump's Ahmedabad visit

Donald Trump may be expecting seven million people to welcome him at Ahmedabad for the “Namaste Trump” extravaganza, but there is a community of around 5,000 people who have decided that they will not be standing on the roadside waving as the US President’s cavalcade winds its way from the airport to Motera stadium.

“When Modi has built a wall to hide us, then why should we go to see him and his special guest,” said Kashi Ben, resident of the slum colony at Indira Bridge Saranga Vyas.

“If he had wanted us to be a part of his mega event he would never have built this wall,” she said, pointing to the six feet high brick wall that has sprung up between the colony and the main road in the last few days.

On one side of this now infamous wall is the picture of development that both Narendra Modi and Amit Shah projected as the “Gujarat Model” to India when asking for votes in 2014, with a swank international airport, roundabouts with artwork and large freshly painted roads, beautified in the last few days with palm trees, flowers and flags of India and the USA.

On the other side of the wall is the real face of Gujarat’s development — a slum colony of over a 1,000 small mud huts criss-crossed by narrow filthy lanes with no proper sewage lines.

“We have been living here for the last 60 years, when there was nothing here except jungle and even as our colony grew, so many dignitaries have gone by, but this is the first time that we are being hidden like this. Is Modi ashamed of us? Instead of hiding us, why doesn’t he make our living conditions better? Are we not a part of Gujarat too?” asked Bhikku Kaka, an elder of the Vanjara community who live in the cluster, even as the Gujarat government continued hectically putting final touches to the programme that would be witnessed by “Two dynamic personalities” on “one momentous occasion”, as some of the hundreds of billboards all over the city declared.

As Ahmedabad airport expanded in the last 30 years and the roads around it built up, a wire fence was erected between the road and the colony. In the last six years as more and more international guests have been brought to Ahmedabad by the Prime Minister to show off his home state, the colony has become an eyesore on this VVIP route. This time a final solution has been implemented to hide the colony permanently.

“There were about 15 to 20 small shanties where the 600-metre wall now stands. They were all destroyed overnight without asking us and the families living there were given no compensation and are now homeless,” said Kashi Ben, whose divorced daughter Reshma was one of the victims. The women of the colony eke out a living working as domestic help in the posh large bungalows in the surrounding area.

“Two sets of toilets were built about four years ago as part of the Prime Minister’s sochalaya scheme, but they can’t cater to 5,000 people. All the women have to go to the river to bathe and go to the toilet late at night,” said Kashi Ben. “It is so embarrassing,” she added. “Modi considers us to be animals,” added a very angry Kashi Ben.

The colony has five sets of taps in which the local corporation supplies water for half an hour three times a day. “Only a trickle flows out of these taps, such that it can take 10 minutes to fill one bucket. It is not enough to provide even drinking water for everyone in the colony, forget washing and many fights take place here over water.”

The local elders now fear the rains, apprehensive that without proper gutters and a new wall preventing drainage, their colony is very likely to flood.

A virtual lockdown has been imposed on the colony and the surrounding areas from Monday morning. “We are not allowed to go to work or move out of our colony except to go to the main road and see Modiji as he passes by. How will that feed our families? We are daily earners,” said Gopal Bhai who sharpens knives for a living.

Gopal Bhai’s concerns are shared by many in Ahmedabad whose homes fall along the roadshow route and have been put under virtual house arrest from 8am till 4pm on Monday. Their lives have been disrupted beyond measure and to what end they ask.
