Razzaq quits Afghan T20 league after Kabul blast

LAHORE: Former Pakistan Test all-rounder Abdul Razzaq has quit the Afghanistan’s T20 league and plans to return to Pakistan after a deadly suicide attack near a cricket stadium in Kabul.

According to officials, three people were killed and 12 wounded in the blast on Wednesday outside the Alokozay Kabul International Cricket Ground in Kabul where a Shpageeza Cricket League match being played between Boost Defenders and MIS Ainak Knights at the time was on a scheduled break and continued without delay.

Razzaq, who was the only Pakistan player featuring in the tournament, was at his hotel at the time of the blast and the hotel is just minutes drive from the site of the blast.

“I was watching a match on television when I heard a deafening blast. All the players were terrified,” Razzaq said. “I immediately decided to return to Pakistan, but the tour organisers persuaded me to play one more match.”

Shortly after the blast, the former Pakistan cricketer added, several players from England, South Africa and Zimbabwe participating in the league held a meeting and decided to leave Kabul.

The attacker detonated the bomb after he was stopped at a security checkpoint as he walked towards the stadium. Five other people were also injured in the explosion.

The league includes six teams and features 10-15 players from South Africa, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe has ordered nine of its cricketers playing in the Afghan T20 league to return home following the suicide bombing.

Zimbabwe Cricket says the nine, which include Test players Elton Chigumbura, Hamilton Masakadza, Sikandar Raza and Richmond Mutumbami, are on their way home.

ZC revoked the no-objection certificates it issued to the players to allow them to go to Afghanistan. It says “ZC will not under any circumstances compromise on matters of player safety.”

So sad. Afghanistan cricket has been making great progress. These incidents are most unfortunate as Pakistanis know - set cricket back in the country for no fault of the players. Best wishes to Afghanistan.

Pak gave respect to afg few months ago when their chairman visited and shehryar finalised some matches in afg and dubai.. but very next day they, when attack happened in kabul due to their country's own poor security invigilance, their chairman started blaming pak and said that we don't want any relation with pak in cricketing terms.. now they must have known that how does it feel when others leave you when its not even your fault..
Today int cricket is returning to pak and players are leaving afg league in the middle..thats how time changes.. we should not become mean and go over the moon when our time is going good..

So are you saying Abdul Razzaq should have stayed back?

well no surprise there. Why the Afghans even thought that they could host a tournament with intl.players is beyond me. Afghanistans security situation makes Pakistans look like a bed of roses.

Shouldnt they be trying to gain full member and Test Status first.

They do have Full Member and Test Status.

Shouldn't have happened....The blast will seriously hurt Afghanistan Cricket

Very sad news but I guess safety first. This will be bad for Afghanistan cricket and respect to Razzaq & all of the other foreign players for trying to help Afghanistan. But I guess you can't criticize the players for returning home as players do have family to see

It's unfortunate but predictable. Afghanistan is a long way from being ready to host such events.

I can't understand how the authorities thought it was appropriate to continue the cricket match despite the blast and deaths of those innocent people. It showed a total disregard for the players, the victims of the attack and the crowd in the stadium.

and still Pakistanis wonder why international players don't visit pakistan ?? As per their logic, many terrorist attacks happen in Europe still people visit UK for cricket but international players don't visit pakistan bcoz of few terror attacks hence they believe it is unfair.

but when their players return back home due to terror attacks from other countries (as per same logic) then it is 100 % fair ! LOL...
