Donald Trump has said that he could win the Afghanistan war “in a week” but did not want to wipe the country “off the face of the Earth”.

At the same White House, the president also made a quixotic offer to mediate the longstanding Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, claiming the Indian government had invited him to act as broker – a claim quickly denied in New Delhi.

The president made his remarks sitting alongside the Pakistani prime minister, Imran Khan, who is seeking to have more than $1bn in US aid restored, after Trump cut it off last year blaming Islamabad for not doing enough to fight extremism.

“The problem was Pakistan wasn’t doing anything for us. They were subversive,” he said. “To be honest, I think we have a better relationship with Pakistan right now than when we were paying that money. That money can come back.”

Trump said that the aid could be restored “depending on what’s worked out”, but claimed that US-Pakistani relations had been better since the aid, which he said was worth $1.3bn, had been cut.

Trump also talked about the 18-year war in Afghanistan, as US officials pursue talks with Taliban officials, with cautious support from Islamabad.

“Pakistan’s going to help us out to extricate ourselves,” Trump said at an Oval Office meeting with Khan. “We’re like policemen. We’re not fighting a war. If we wanted to fight a war in Afghanistan and win it, I could win that war in a week. But I don’t want to kill 10 million people. Afghanistan could be wiped off the face of the Earth. I don’t want to go that route.”

Trump added that there was hope that the Taliban would talk about peace in the coming days. A White House statement later acknowledged: “Pakistan has made efforts to facilitate the Afghanistan peace talks, and we are going to ask them to do more.”

It went on: “The path to a strong and enduring partnership between Pakistan and the US lies in working together to find a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Afghanistan.”

The US made its displeasure with Khan clear when he arrived over the weekend. Rather than being whisked off in a limousine, he boarded an ordinary airport shuttle. According to Pakistani press reports, there was no one from the state department to greet him as he landed. The state department has yet to respond to a request for comment.

At his Oval Office meeting with Trump, Khan also asked for US mediation in his country’s dispute with India over Kashmir. The US president said the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, had made a similar request.

“If I can help, I would love to be a mediator,” Trump said. “It is impossible to believe that two incredible countries who are very, very smart with very smart leadership can’t solve a problem like that. If you would want me to mediate or arbitrate. I would be willing to do it.”

Khan replied: “You will have the prayers of over a billion people if you can mediate or resolve this issue.”

The Indian government, however, insisted it had made no such request.

“We have seen the [president’s] remarks to the press that he is ready to mediate, if requested by India & Pakistan, on Kashmir issue. No such request has been made by [prime minister Modi] to US president,” the foreign ministry spokesman, Raveesh Kumar, said on Twitter.

“It has been India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally.”

At the White House appearance, Khan faced questions about his attacks on press freedom in Pakistan, where three television channels have been taken of the air after broadcasting a speech by an opposition leader. Khan dismissed criticism over press freedom as a “joke”.

There were also questions about the imprisonment of Shakil Afridi, a Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA run a fake vaccine programme in Abbottabad, to confirm Osama bin Laden’s presence in a walled compound there. Trump said he would raise Afridi’s case in his talks with Khan.

He is right, he can nuke Afghanistan, but that will only leave scorched earth, so best not to do it.

Trump said what his stupid brain came up with.

Can't wait for this orange idiot to leave office.

ANA must be really disappointed. All that effort put into filling sandbags and putting up hesco barriers, and for what so Trump could wipe them out?

This comment by Trump really humiliates Afghanistan and their 5000 year history, lol

What history? History of being occupied and living in rubble? History of being a lawless land? History of living 1000 years behind everyone else? History of being uneducated?

It was a sarcastic post. Some Afghans love to take pride in their mythical 5000 history, lol.

You have not read a bit if history then. Afghans are true warriors and has been noted by various leaders throughout history .

The current Afghanistan is nothing. It's a poor country with a puppet leader and its people sick and tired.

The real Afghanistan was something else. You're not a Pashtun so you wont understand

I appreciate that but fed up Afghan nationalists raving about history. History is a thing of the past. I have pashtun/punjabi heritage myself.

Should just have kept a dignified silence. It might be a moronic comment, but technically he is right. We saw already that historically America won a war decisively by nuking two Japanese cities. Why would this be any different?

Yes, in 2017, Trump ordered to drop MOAB (mother of all bombs) in Afghanistan. He said the following in his press conference with IK.

"Let me give you one thing on Afghanistan, as an example. So a lot of you don’t know this, but we dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb ever built in history. We dropped it in Afghanistan. We were getting ready to make many of those bombs. This left a hole that was — it took out a lot of the tunnels and everything else. But it left a hole in the Earth that looked like the moon; it looked like a crater from the moon. It’s still there. It was — nobody has ever seen anything like it. People heard it 15 miles away. They said, “What was that?” It shook the Earth. Non-nuclear — the largest ever made, by far.

And they were going to make many of them. And I said, “No, we don’t have to. I don’t want to drop that. I don’t want to do that.” So many easy solutions. That’s actually the easy solution. And they’d come in and they’d say, “Let’s have peace.” But you don’t have to do that. I think we’re going to be very successful with having to go that route. And I have tremendous confidence in the Prime Minister".

Nothing of that sounds good..

Everybody that has met an Afghan has heard their stories.

No race is more martial than another, the reason why Afghans weren't colonized themselves and colonize other nations for a long time is because of their geography. Modern day researchers now realize how important geography is. It makes sense that Afghanistan was finally colonized in the 20th century/21st century becaue of the advancements in military technology, weapons and airpower.

Trump just blurted out whatever was on his mind. He hasn't cared about the repercussions of his actions his whole life. This is a guy who diverts attention from his scandals through advocating racism and clearly now comments about genocide.

True, even Alexander the Great had a hard time conquering Afghanistan because the Bactrian nobleman Oxyartes and his men would hide in caves and climb up the mountains.

Trump doesn't owe this puppet government any explanations. You can't demand explanations from your master. Kabul government can't survive even two months without US aid.

True, even Alexander the Great had a hard time conquering Afghanistan because the Bactrian nobleman Oxyartes and his men would hide in caves and climb up the mountains.

Yeah and that's why most mountain people were hard to conquer because of their geography, it's the same with Kurds, Iranians, Nepalese, Balkan people and even other tribes in northern Pakistan and India. Another reason why Afghanistan wasn't invaded because it didn't have fertile farmland, most armies invaded fertile plains close to rivers which is why the Indus and Gangetic plains were invaded the most because of flat fertile land and that's why the subcontinent has such a high population because of historical invasions and immigration and that's why western Pakistan and Afghanistan has such low population density.

Regions with deserts and mountains are hard to live and people from those areas, especially nomadic tribes always migrated to fertile lands for better life which is why there was a historical migration of pashtuns and baluch to the indus plains and not the other way around. If you look at a world map, any region with mountains and deserts is almost always low in population and it's only because of geography.

Afghans are full of themselves over what supposedly they were centuries back. They have nothing to be proud of at all. Afghan government would most likely very happily allow Trump to bomb them in to the stone age. That is the only way they can get rid of the Afghan Taliban.

Some stupid comments on here. Afghans have resisted invaders better than any Indians, Arabs, Africans, Europeans ever have.

What Trump said was just idiotic and you could see IK smiling with embarrasment. Even if he were to drop big megaton bombs and kill millions, he wont wipe out all Afghans. Those who grow up will never forget such barbarism and others around the world would join them in attacking any American anywhere in the world.

Taliban are ready to speak to IK as he has crediblity. Im sure he will get them to agree to peace if they can assure them of fair elections. This would be difficult to achieve quickly as tribal people dont like 'democracy' but even they want peace.

See my comment about geography, that's the reason why their resistance was successful until the past century. There's no such thing as an inherently superior race.

Geography, terrain, landscape has helped them no doubt. Past century? They have been whopping Nato for over 18 years now. You will find many videos of occupiers attacking their villages but cannot penetrate so call in air strikes to bomb indiscriminatley. Without air power, the foriegn armies would have left a long time ago.

Wouldn't call it a whooping if they've been under occupation for the past 18 years and even before that the Soviets were there for over a decade. The difficult terrain of afghanistan is the only reason why it's a hard place to fight and the same holds true for countries with similar terrain, this is why guerrilla warfare works so well for them.

It is if you compare weapons and technology, modern day David v Golaith. As I said they wipe out villages with airtrikes and many of these were Helmand in pretty flat terrain. We have to give credit where its due, the Afghans in the south are much braver than any US/UK soldier imho. This is why they control most of those areas after 18 years.
