Afghanistan is one cricket team I follow quite closely beside Pakistan, so I though why not keep the discussion to one thread.

So Afghanistan team has managed to arrange 4 match ODI series against Zimbabwe and also have some 4 day games against Zimbabwe A team. Impressive! When was the last time an associate managed to get this many games?

I took a look at Afghanistan squad and I was impressed again. They have dropped all the non performing seniors and instead selected young cricketers. They have got rid of the fat wicketkeeper Shehzad aswell who I though was the backbone of their batting and many doubted whether they would be able to move forward after the generation that learned their cricket in Pakistan will retire. Now they have 5-6 really impressive young cricketers that have taken over from the first generation.

Usman Ghani from U.19 team scored 286 runs in 5 odi games at 57.20 Including 118 against Zimbabwe.

Hashmatullah Shaidi is in the team as well. Was very impressive at u.19 level. Scored 100 against Pakistan u.19 and scored at 50+ average at WCU.19 in UAE.

Nasir Jamal U.19 captain got his debut today and scored 28. He also scored at around 50 average at world cup and looks exciting middle order batsman.

Sharafudin Sharaf is left arm spinner also from U.19 team. Has bowled really well so far and he can hit big at the end as well.

Besides they have Shafiqullah as wicketkeeper. Hard hitting batsman 24 years old.

Javid Ahmadi 22 years old scored 57 today.

Aftab Alam 21 years old medium pacer took 2 wickets for 44

Overall as one can see the new generation is taking over and they are building a new team for the future.

They lost pretty badly in first 2 games. I though a new team is building up and even if they lose 4-0 they will learn from the experience, but today they won by 2 wicket in most dramatic way. The game was lost and some 60 runs needed at 12.5 pr. over, but a great finish got Afghans their first win of the series. Zim is leading 2-1 and I expect them to win 3-1, but this looks good from Afghan point of view. They are certainly not going Kenya way.

A look at the 4 day games squad and even more new names, players I don't know. I guess this means they have a large pool of players to chose from:

squads:
Afghanistan ODI squad: Mohammad Nabi (capt), Aftab Alam, Asghar Stanikzai, Dawlat Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Hashmatullah Shaidi, Javed Ahmadi, Mirwais Ashraf, Nasir Jamal, Noor Ali Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Samiullah Shenwari, Shafiqullah (wk), Shapoor Zadran, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Usman Ghani

Four-day squad: Mohammad Nabi (capt), Abdullah Adil, Fareed Ahmad, Fazal Niazai, Karim Sadiq, Mirwais Ashraf, Mohammad Mujtaba, Mohibullah Oryakhel, Najeeb Tarakai, Najibullah Zadran, Nasir Jamal, Qasim Khan (wk), Rahmat Shah, Shabir Noori, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Yamin Ahmadzai

Afghanistan just won against Zimbabwe again. They pretty much humiliated them. They had them for 29/6 and zim ended with 159 chasing 260.

Afghanistan draw their first major series after being down 2-0. The series end 2-2.

Well done team Afghanistan.

Thanks for the thread and yes well done the the boyd and management. Good to see youngsters in the team and they all performed well. Hope they can arrange more matches with test playing nations.

I really hope we get a series vs each other before the WC. Quite a good rivalry has built up over the years.

Didnt think the Afghans had it in them but fair play to them for drawing the series. Highlights just how far Zim have fallen in recent years though.

Can't believe Zimbabwe lost this convincingly to Afghanistan. They have hit a new low. Though well done to Afghanistan for fighting back to 2-2.

Exceptionally well played that even in an away tour. Congrats and continue to rise.

Such inconsistent performance is expected from lower ranked teams.

they beat zimbabwe twice so happy for them. no hype about it though, it's not even one of the main stories on cricinfo

Afghanistan lineup today:

Fareed Ahmad, Fazal Niazai, Karim Sadiq, Mirwais Ashraf, Mohibullah Oryakhel, Najeeb Tarakai, Najibullah Zadran,Qasim Khan (wk), Rahmat Shah, Shabir Noori, Yamin Ahmadzai

Don't know many of the players, but they are not doing any good:
Afghanistan 55/4 (27.0 ov)

Isnt Fareed Ahmed the u19 who took 7 wickets vs Pakistan U 19 last year??

I understand Afghanistan want to try new players but I dont see much point in sending this new a squad. Would've been better off sending a stronger team for these matches and outlining that they can play multi day cricket. Although maybe one of the tour agreements was that they send a weak team for these matches since Zim are fielding a reserve team.

Good performance. Afghanistan were poor with the ball in the first two matches but have made a strong comeback.

Really shameful performance by Zimbabwe though, as a Test team, they should be beating associates at home at the very least.

Yes you are right. Indeed Fareed is that guy, but I don't understand why even players like Hashmatullah, Nasir Jamal, Usman Ghani and Sharafudin is not there. All these guys are new as well.

I don't think such agreement exist between Zim and Afghan Board. You take a look at Zim team and they have around 450 FC game between them. Most Afghans are on debut or just played 1 game.

Don't understand the logic in selecting such inexperienced team against Zim. Maybe they should have arranged a tour against UAE or Nepal and given these guys chance in those games.

98/8

Pretty woeful stuff so far. All this is going to do is hurt these guys confidence levels.

Whats happened to Rahmat Shah btw?? That guy was really promising and I remember he hit like 90* vs us in the Intercontinental cup final and was the only guy capable of grinding an innings. He's had a terrible tour and disappointed in previous games as well.

Zimbabwe 8/3 in reply.

Man the standard in their domestic league must be pretty bad if this is the calibre of player its producing.

Could be over in 2 days this match!

Fight back by inexperienced Afg.
Afghanistan 105 & 275/5 (80.0 ov)
Zimbabwe A 165
Afghanistan lead by 215 runs with 5 wickets remaining

2nd innings afghanistan 321 all out. Zimbabwe 226 all out.

Afghanistan A won by 35 runs after being 105 all out in 1st innings.

India approves $1 million for the construction of Kandahar cricket stadium

The government of India has approved USD 1 million for the construction of cricket stadium in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said Friday that a proposal was sent to the Indian embassy requesting USD 1 million fund for the construction of a standard cricket stadium in Kandahar province.
ACB further added that construction work of the stadium will be started in the near future in Aino Meena city, after the proposal was approved by the Indian government.
A letter issued by the Indian embassy in this regard was also released by Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), which states: “Excellency, In your capacity as the Chief Patron of the Afghan Cricket Board (ACB), you will be happy to know that Government of India has just approved US$ 1 million for construction of the Kandahar Cricket stadium at Aino Mena, Kandahar under the Small Development Project Scheme. This was a project that ACB has been closely following with us and we will be working with them to have the work started on this important project at the earliest.”
The letter further added, “We have released that sports, both cricket and football, have united the country and enthused the youth as nothing else. We hope that this new facility, and the various initiatives taken by ACB would further popularize cricket and bring greater glory to the nation. We are encouraged by Afghan cricket team’s recent performance in Zimbabwe.”
In the meantime, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) chief executive, Dr. Noor Mohammad Murad, called the approval of the funds for the construction of Kandahar Cricket stadium, a major achievement and congratulated the residents of Kandahar province.
Dr. Murad also thanked the Indian government and Indian embassy in Kabul for approving the funds for the construction of Kandahar Cricket Stadium.

I'm liking what I have seen from them on Test debut so far.

Would love to see them playing a Test in Karachi/Peshawar/Quetta soon!

So heartening to see Afghanistan rally after a disastrous couple of sessions.

What a joyful day for them and an excellent comeback.

More power to them!
