Afghanistan have named a familiar looking 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2018, with a few new faces.

Sayed Sherzad, Munir Ahmad and Wafadar Momand are the uncapped players in the One-Day International format. Of them, Momand and Sherzad have played in the Test and Twenty20 International format respectively, but Munir is yet to represent Afghanistan.

Momand and Shirzad have been called up to bolster the fast-bowling attack, which will complement a very strong spin attack featuring Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi – Aghanistan's top two wicket-takers in the fifty-over format – as well as Mujeeb ur Rahman.

Munir has a strong batting average across formats in domestic cricket, but he also doubles up as a back up wicket-keeper for Mohammad Shahzad.

Dawlat Zadran was the only omission from the side that won the One-Day International series in Ireland recently.

Zadran did not feature in the playing XI in any of the three ODIs on that tour, however. He last played for Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2018 in Zimbabwe earlier this year.

Afghanistan begin their Asia Cup campaign with a match against Sri Lanka on 17 September.

Hazratullah Zazai dropped? Shouldn't have. Could have been very useful at the top with Shahzad still not looking settled.

It will be interesting to see how rashid and mujeeb perform against top sides.

Wafadar, the Afghanistan fast bowler, has been ruled out of Asia Cup 2018 after he sustained a back injury during training.

According to the Afghanistan Cricket Board, Wafadar had a “nerve depression in his back” and was “advised rest for six weeks” by doctors. His return will be carefully managed thereafter.

Wafadar will be replaced by Yamin Ahmadzai, who was already with the squad as a reserve player.

Wafadar, 18, was one of three uncapped players in Afghanistan’s 17-man squad for the tournament. He first came to prominence during Afghanistan’s maiden Test against India in Bengaluru in June.

He picked up two wickets – those of Murali Vijay and Hardik Pandya – and was particularly impressive in a couple of spells.

Meanwhile, Dawlat Zadran, who sustained a knee injury in June ahead of the Twenty20 International series against Bangladesh, will need another six weeks of rehabilitation before he can take the field again.
