Sharjah - Off-spinner Mujeeb Zadran became the first international male cricketer born in the 21st century as his four wickets helped Afghanistan thrash Ireland by 138 runs in the first one-day international (ODI) in Sharjah on Tuesday.

Born on March 28, 2001, the 16-year-old's 4-24 were the joint-best figures for an Afghanistan bowler on ODI debut as Ireland were bowled out for only 100 in pursuit of 239.

Afghanistan's biggest win over Ireland gives them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the remaining matches also in Sharjah on December 7 and 10.

Ireland women's all-rounder Gaby Lewis became the first international cricketer born this millennium when she made her Twenty20 international debut against South Africa at Solihull, England in 2014.

Mujeeb, brought into the Afghanistan side for this series after taking 20 wickets in five matches to help his country win the Under-19 Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur last month, made an early impact.

He equalled fast bowler Shapoor Zadran's 4-24 against the Netherlands at Amstelveen in 2009.

Skipper William Porterfield (35), Stuart Poynter (27 not out) and George Dockrell (ten) were the only batsmen to reach double figures in Ireland's lowest total against Afghanistan.

Their previous lowest was 150 at Belfast in 2016 and their previous heaviest defeat against Afghanistan was by 71 runs in Dublin in 2015.

Rising star Rashid Khan, 19, took 3-28 with his leg-spin, having also struck a 49-ball 48.

Afghanistan, sent in to bat, made 238-9 with Nasir Jamal scoring 53 and Rahmat Shah an even 50.

The big-hitting Shafiqullah Shafiq smashed a 23-ball 36 with three sixes after coming in at number nine.

Boyd Rankin (4-44) and Tim Murtagh (3-28) were the pick of the Ireland attack, while Kevin O'Brien took 1-50 to become the first Irish bowler to reach 100 ODI wickets.

Afghanistan have the best LOI spin attack in the world right now.

Mujeeb and Rashid! What a promising duo!

So many Zadrans around the Afghan team.

They are seem to be full of talent.

Exciting times for the country ahead

There may be some doubts about his real age but he seems to be an exciting talent. Afghanistan can really become a great team in the next few years and they deserve more games against bigger teams.

I doubt very much he is 16. Like Rashid who is not 19. He looks 18-20. But seems to be a big talent.

Judging by the FB pics Rashid himslef posted, he's easily over 23. Mujeeb is also probably around 19-20. That being said, both are sensational talents. I feel Rashid will be more successful in the long run. Because Mujeeb is basically a taller version of Akila Dananjaya and once the batsmen figure out his variations (the googly and leggie he bowls) he'll be less effective. The same that happened with Dananjaya against India in the ODIs immediately following the 3rd one, where he took a 6-fer.

Afghanistan have the best LOI spin attack in the world right now.

The sample size is too small to make that big of a judgement. Pakistan probably caps the best LOI spin attack at the moment. Rashid and Mujeeb are great talents, but will need to play against stronger teams before being labeled as the "best".

He opened the bowling today against Ireland and took 2-50 from his 10 overs. Ireland batting better today.

Mujeeb Zadran becomes youngest bowler to pick ODI five-for

Afghanistan off-spinner Mujeeb Zadran made headlines a few days back after he became the third Afghan player to be picked in the IPL auctions. He was bought by King XI Punjab for an amount of Rs 4 crore.

The 16-year-old spinner has now etched his name in record books after becoming the youngest bowler to bag a fifer in ODI cricket surpassing former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis who achieved the feat at the age of 18 years 164 days.

Afghanistan rode on Mujeeb’s fifer to bundle out Zimbabwe for 134 in the fourth ODI of the five-match series. The off-spinner’s wickets involved the dismissals of Solomon Mire, Hamilton Masakadza, Graeme Cremer, Kyle Jarvis and Blessing Muzarabani. Mire was the first to depart after he was cleaned up by Mujeeb when the score read 14 while Masakadza followed him just after 1 run.

Mujeeb returned to the attack and picked skipper Cremer and Jarvis for 2 and a golden duck respectively. Later, he disturbed the woodwork behind number 11 Muzarabanito to claim his fifth wicket in the match. For Zimbabwe, it was Craig Ervine who showed resistance and remained unbeaten at 54. The 16-year-old off-spinner cleaned up four out of the five batsmen that he dismissed.

Zimbabwe never got the control back as Afghanistan spin attack pushed them on the backfoot as they shared all the ten wickets. Asghar Stanikzai-led Afghanistan side have already registered a win in T20I series while lead the ODI fixtures 2-1.

Only a matter of time before he is found out. Same thing happened to Ajantha Mendis.

Gets a wicket in his first over of the IPL as well

Mujeeb Ur Rahman - The big moment for the 17 year old Afghan spinner [Virat Kohli wicket]

17 year old Mujeeb Ur Rahman has his dream moment and we are all lucky to have witnessed it.

The young boy takes the wicket of the greatest batsman in world cricket today (in absence of Steven Smith).

And he does it with a peach of a delivery.

He will never forget this day. Neither would we the true fans of cricket.

Looks like he can bowl 4 or 5 variations every over and he has great control over them.

Very tricky customer for batsmen who are looking to attack him.

Remember these IPL tracks are total pattas with little spin. Yet this guy is making some of the greats dance. Imagine what he will do on a day-4 or day-5 in Test cricket.

The thing is I don't find a reliable stock ball in him. Inevitably he will be studied more and then he must rely on his stock ball.

How are Afghanistan able to produce and find such amazing spinners? Wow. They are new to international cricket and already have two top quality spinners.

They will india a tough fight in their inaugural test match for sure

Being a proud and handsome Punjabi, i am thrilled and ecstatic to have witnessed this moment. A teenage spinner from my favorite sub continental nation bamboozling the biggest superstar in world cricket today and certainly the best batsman by miles after the ban on Steven Smith.

This kid has a long way to go. He is going to be a superstar, especially in the IPL for years to come.

Bowled really well in the first 3 overs. Wrong move to bowl him so late tho

Magician.

Absolutely love his bowling. Making fools out of these mediocre hacks.

Hampshire Cricket are delighted to announce the signings of exciting Afghanistan spinner, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and destructive New Zealand batsman, Colin Munro, for this year’s Vitality Blast competition.

The international duo will fill the two allocated overseas slots for 2018, with Ur Rahman available for the duration of the tournament and Munro set to feature until his Caribbean Premier League commitments in August.

Mystery spinner, Ur Rahman, has burst onto the scene in the last 12 months with his ability to bowl ripping off-breaks, leg-breaks and googlies propelling him onto the international stage.

The 17-year-old first impressed as part of an Afghanistan U19 side that claimed a historic victory in the Under-19 Asia Cup in 2017, and his performances as leading wicket-taker there earned him a full international debut at the age of just 16.

The right-armer also proved to be a key contributor to his side’s success in the 2019 Cricket World Cup Qualifying tournament earlier this year, helping secure their place at next year’s full tournament hosted in England and Wales.

Those achievements and his ability to bowl match-winning spells saw him selected by Kings XI Punjab for more than 600,000 USD in this year’s Indian Premier League shortly after, becoming the youngest player ever to play in the tournament. The youngster has dazzled for Ravi Ashwin’s side so far in the competition too, claiming 14 wickets in the tournament so far.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman said: “It is a great honour for me to play domestic cricket in England and I am very much looking forward to this latest challenge in my career so far. I hope I can help Hampshire be successful during my time with the team this year.”

The big-hitting Munro is one of the game’s most destructive batsmen, boasting an average of 33.51 and a strike-rate of 163.59 in 45 T20Is for New Zealand, whilst the left-hander currently sits second in the ICC’s World T20I batting rankings.

The 31-year-old is the only player to score three T20I centuries in the history of the game and has been involved in the best T20 competitions across the world, including the Big Bash and Indian Premier League, where he’s currently featuring for Delhi Daredevils.

Colin Munro said: “I am really looking forward to joining up with Hampshire for this summer’s Vitality Blast. Hopefully I can help the team get off to a flying start in the competition and contribute to securing a place in the knockout stages again this year. I have head very positive things about the set-up at the Ageas Bowl and with a strong squad I think we have a real chance of going deep into the competition.”

Hampshire Director of Cricket, Giles White said: “We’re pleased to add two high-quality international cricketers in Colin and Mujeeb to our squad for this year’s T20 competition. They’re both very talented and exciting players and hopefully they can contribute to another successful campaign for us this summer.”
