We actually did well in the India ODI's vs AFG and couldve won if not for shoddy umpiring.

And do check the score last time we played the Scots. Hint: An 80 run win in a t20. For as awful as we've been at times, we're at the very least on par with those two sides you mention.

That being said I expect AFG to win this series. This is Bracewell's last job before Ford takes over so hopefully after this tour we start seeing some genuine change in the Irish selection policies.
 
I expect the Irish to be fighting hard, but in the end, Afghanistan will win this series 2-1.
 
If they are playing in the UAE as home pakistan needs to find a new home venue or ask them to look for somewhere else.

It will be an interesting series, I hope they play test cricket against each other soon. That will be more interesting especially it played in Ireland.

A convincing win for Afghanistan to take a 1-0 series lead.
 
2nd ODI tomorrow also at Sharjah beginning at 1430 local time. Afghanistan will be looking to wrap up the series.

Good comeback after that horror show in game 1. Middle order still complete pants though and needs changing.

For those interested the game is being broadcasted in Afghanistan, on the afghan cricket board website and there's loads of streams on youtube
 
Good battle. I hope these two develop a natural rivalry as new Test nations & push each other along. Afghanistan the talented upstart from the rough neighbourhood, Ireland much more polished & established in the game.

Congrats to Ireland.

Fully deserved to win 2-1. Played much better cricket. Ireland fielding is also first class. Afghans really lack behind in fielding.

Also I cannot believe Afghanistan has not ditched Asghar Stanikzai the captain. Extremly average player. I just checked his stats. 77 games average of 22 and strike rate of 65. The guy plays as specialist batsman. Mind boggling!

Why they kept bowling with this Shapoor Zadran guy, going at 10+ rate in such a low scoring match!!!!! Almost alone made it too easy for Irish.

Mickey Arthur plays specialist fielders (shan masood). Not getting the point that it would have helped if he could bat a bit as well.

Just cause of him we only played 1 spinner vs SL!!!

Stirling is the only Irish player I legitimately think could dominate any attack on his day. An absolute class player.
 
So Ireland beat Afghanistan who beat Zimbabwe who beat the West Indies.

Shows what a joke it is only 2 of these teams to make the next WC
 
IRL should have been playing WC as host, but I guess ECB won't share it with Irish Board. I am always for 12 team WC top X + host (s) = 9 automatic qualifiers + 3 from the next 6 through proper qualifying system, preferably 3 match home & away series between 6 teams overs a year & best 3 makes the cut.

Same format, 12 teams - 66 + 3 = 69 matches. It's possible to finish the tournament in 35 + 7 = 42 days.
 
Fantastic stuff for the Irish lads. AFG had been dominating. Away win too with a comeback after being thrashed.

Perfect time as WCQ coming up.

12 teams with round robin group stage ie play all 11 opponents with top 4 in semis?

Zimbabwe beat the WI in an ODI last year IIRC.

Point is these four teams are so similar to each other, qualifying may well come down to luck or an umpiring howler.

Our bowling seems to have improved a lot with Rankin back and Chase fulfilling his potential. Our top order has always been solid but middle order remains a serious weakness tbh. Still wont qualify unless this is addressed.
 
Thing is, Ireland have been diabolical vs established side like BD, NZ past 2 years, where Afghanistan excelled beating WI and BD away.

Yet in our last 8 ODI's vs AFG, all of which have been in Asia mind and with AFG possessing a world class spin department, we've won four and lost four.

Agree. In my opinion, the World Cup HAS to be at lest 12 teams, Ireland and Afghanistan are not that far behind Zimbabwe and the West Indies, yet only 2 of the 4 will make it.

It's a World cup, not some everyone plays everyone tournament. 16 teams, 2 groups of 8 followed by QF, Semis & final will be better. Total matches 63. Group stage 56 matches in 28 days. About 10 more days for knockouts. Whole WC done in about 38 days

That's risky - 4 out of 8 qualifies for QF, in a cricket world where top half teams are distinctively ahead of bottom half. This'll bring lots of corruption in the tournament. Cricket is a game like baseball, where on a given bad day a top team can lose. In baseball, they play 162 regular season games and then 7 match play-offs to ensure that top 2 teams are making the final.

For WC, 8, 10, 12, 14 teams doesn't matter, but tournament should be like 1992's format (or 1989 Neheru Cup), which would ensure every game has a meaning. That point carry forward to 2nd round system doesn't work - if you analyze 1999 WC, you should understand.

I think, ODI tournaments are perfect - the short tournament (CT) has 4 X 2 teams, playing SF>F; while the long tournament should have 12 teams, round robin league, followed by preferably eliminator games, but SF>F isn't bad either. May be ICC can introduce another ultra short tournament - ICC KO : 8 teams, straight KO - Q>SF>F in total 7 games, may be in 9 days (Friday-Monday 4 QF; Wed-Thu 2 SF; Sat Final).
 
Good work by Ireland. Hope that they play lot more cricket. These two teams need to play against West Indies and Zimbabwe a lot more. Unfortunately those are the only teams who might play some games against these two teams at the moment.
