India will host Afghanistan in the latter’s first ever Test match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said on Monday (December 11) after a Special General Body Meeting in New Delhi.

The dates and venue for the Test match will be decided later. “Afghanistan were scheduled to play their first Test in 2019 against Australia but considering the historic relationship between India and Afghanistan, we decided to host their first Test,” said Amitabh Choudhary, the BCCI’s acting secretary.

Atif Mashal, the chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, confirmed the development on Twitter.

Rahul Johri, the chief executive of the BCCI, welcomed Afghanistan to the Test fold.

Ireland and Afghanistan were both conferred Test status after a unanimous vote to that effect by the full member boards of the International Cricket Council in June during the annual conference in London. Ireland are due to make their Test debut at home in May 2018, against Pakistan.

Happy for Afghanistan

Sad that they did not play against Pakistan as first Test after all this country has done to help Afg cricketers.

Unless of course they asked Pakistan first and schedule didn't allow

And to think that Afghanistan would probably field a better fast bowling attack in their very first match than 99% of fast bowling attacks in Indian history. Some of those dudes looked mean in the LOs I've seen of them with a proper fast bowlers' attitude.

Incredible growth in the past few years.

Indian batsmen and bowlers looking for more easy runs and wickets at home.

It'll be interesting to see kind of track Afghans are given.

In any case, a great news and best of luck to Afghanistan!

lol that's sadly true for us

Hope they don't get the Dharamshala deck with their pacemen haha, or we're finished.

Surprise India havent made this a 5 match test series ;)

Afghanistan has a long way to go before they can compete in test cricket, but this at least a good step. They will go up against the strongest team from the beginning and see how much work they need to compete.

Good news and hopefully the start of regular fixtures for the new Test nations.

If a team is touring India or Pakistan in UAE, they should also play one Test vs Afghanistan. If a team is touring South Africa, they should stop over in Zimbabwe, and every England tour should be accompanied by a Test in Ireland.

India just helping new new teams grow and prosper. Good. India and Afghanistan have good trade relationship and cricket now picking up

Congrats..Thank God it is not Pakistan.

Not in favour of us playing Afghanistan.Good to see us back Ireland.

Good for Afghanistan and hope they do well. Bangladesh also played their first test against India if I remember right.

On a bouncy fast pitch (like Dharamshala), Afghanistan can surely be competitive

India played ZIM, BD, and AFG in their debut tests.

ZIM and BD both scored 400 or more in their first innings...Afghans will struggle to get half that in both innings.

They should have outgrown 5 Bangladeshs already given how much money and support the ICC has pumped into them versus BD in the 90s.

Same for Ireland.

They get paid less than any of the full members, including Bangladesh.

The 2014 revamp actually took Associates' chunk towards big 3, so they missed out on further imbursements

Historic relationship between Afghanistan and India. Can anybody elaborate. Pakistan has done so much for Afghanistan and now look at them. Well I don't want to start a debate but everybody knows what's happening.

Wonderful.

If its in Maharashtra I will try to attend this historical occasion.

I said BD in the 90s. Afghan and Irish boards actually got more money in the Big 3 than before. It was the other associates that got robbed.

In the 90s there was no world cricket league or bilateral fixtures with Test nations. No world t20 either. The current era is the best era for new Test nations to come in provided they have good management, which both AFG and IRE have.

Lets leave it at 'historic'....

When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced it will host Afghanistan for its first ever Test, it took some time to sink in. Afghanistan Cricket Board chief executive officer Shafiq Stanikzai says the whole country welcomed the news with great joy. In a chat with The Indian Express, he talks about what Test status means to them, how the BCCI lent a helping hand and the challenge that lie ahead of them. Excerpts:

How did you get to know about India Test?
The last week has been a shocker both for players and the Afghan board. We got beaten by Ireland in an ODI series in our home conditions in Sharjah. We lost our 10th position, that we had for the last two years. The team had just landed from Dubai when we got the news. It was really pleasing. The whole country welcomes the news of us playing Test cricket, that too against India. This will be important for Afghanistan, both politically and cricket-wise. We all have dreamt of playing Test cricket one day and we are happy to reach this stage. But the real challenge starts now.

Don’t you think Afghanistan cricket needs to move forward from the issues faced by people back home?
I have been asked this many times now. I agree with what you say. The challenge for Afghanistan lies ahead when they play big teams. Since earning Test status, people here are expecting us to win everything. The expectations of people are sky-high. It won’t be an easy ride. We have to work harder than before. We have fought all odds to reach where we are today. We will give a good fight to any Test-playing nation.

What has been the response back home?
The entire nation is very happy. Earning Test status was a dream come true for the entire country. The response has been great. The news was all over radio, TV, newspapers, everywhere. For a team like Afghanistan, it’s a great thing. I would like to thank BCCI for allowing us to play our inaugural Test match at their home. Everyone is excited here, but I feel the real competition starts now.

ACB has a good relationship with BCCI. It must have been a help?
When I took over as CEO in 2014, I made a personal request to our President Ashraf Ghani to help us have a good diplomatic relationship with BCCI. I remember when I was in Scotland in 2015, I got a phone call from Ghani saying he had conveyed my message to Mr Modi (Prime Minister) and we will have a press conference in this regard soon. And then I met (former BCCI president) Anurag Thakur many times in Delhi and also in Asian Cricket Council meetings twice. Thakur was inspirational and because of him, we got our players in the IPL. We were allowed to practise in India and play games in Delhi (Greater Noida) too. India has been a big help for us, like an elder brother, for the past few years.

Will the Afghanistan team be going to India before the Test?
Our schedule is very tight as we are preparing for the World Cup qualifiers to be held next year. We might go to South Africa before we compete for the World Cup qualifiers, to be held in Zimbabwe.

Good for them . Hopefully they play it at Dharmasala or Eden.

India has always been at the forefront in helping new cricketing nations. They helped to welcome the test teams of Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, and now will have the honour of helping Afghanistan.

Ok.
Ignorance is a blessing at times.
Afghanistan is an extra special case.

Finally India does what was expected of it long ago (even if for political reasons). Equity can only be ensured if giants like India help toddlers like Ireland, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.

bunch of scavangers, Sharyar khan said that Pakistan was supposed to play Afghanistan in its inagural test but the afghan board allowed politics get in the way hence we are seeing this. Pakistan has been nothing but loyal to Afghanistan in the past.

Ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that India would host Afghanistan in the latter's first Test, there have been speculations over the date.

With Indian team scheduled to play back-to-back overseas tours, there were reports the fixture would ultimately be pushed back to the next Future Tours and Programme (FTP) that begins in 2019. Sources in the Board had earlier confirmed to Sportstar that the one-off Test would be held much before the 2019 FTP, and now it has been learnt that the Test will be held in June, 2018.

While an official briefing is expected soon, highly reliable sources have confirmed that 'as of now' June has been zeroed in on as that's the only available window left for the Indian team.

The small window between the Indian Premier League and India's tour to Ireland and England, it is learnt, will be used to host this historic Test. “The venue and the date for that tournament will be announced shortly. It is likely to be held around that time (June) only,” BCCI acting president, C. K. Khanna, told Sportstar on Wednesday.

While Khanna remained tight-lipped about it, other sources confirmed the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has proposed the BCCI to name the series after two present country heads — Narendra Modi and Ashraf Gani. “There has been a proposal from the ACB regarding naming the tournament after the country heads, but nothing has been decided yet,” the source said.

As far as deciding the venue is concerned, both the boards, it is believed, are pondering over the three possible options -- Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi. The ACB wants the match in a venue where the Afghan nationals can reach easily.

Afghanistan, along with Ireland, attained Test status last July and team has its home base in Greater Noida, while its Test home venue is Sharjah.

They should make it a three day match. Afghanistan will do brilliantly if they take play in to the fourth day. Should have visited Bangladesh first for the "hate Pakistan" series:ashwin

I'm kind of glad that they didnt choose Pakistan

The Rashid factor is a huge one. You dont wanna face him just yet

If Afghanistan could unleash another spinner, India would be done and dusted.

I have a feeling afghanistan would bowl well but they're batsmen wouldn't be able to handle Shami, Ashwin and Jadeja

Bengaluru could be announced as a venue for Afghanistan's first-ever Test, to be played against India. The BCCI and Afghanistan Cricket Board are expected to make a joint announcement after a meeting, on Tuesday. Bengaluru has emerged as the leading venue for the historic match, which could take place in June. The BCCI had last month announced that it would host Afghanistan's maiden Test. Afghanistan earned their Test status alongside Ireland in June last year.

Their respective boards were made full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in June, becoming the sport's 11th and 12h Test-playing nations. Besides welcoming them into five-day cricket, the BCCI has extended a helping hand to Afghanistan on a number of occasions.

The team from the war-ravaged nation has hosted its home games in India, most recently the series against Ireland in Greater Noida. Rashid Khan and Mohammed Nabi became the first two Afghanistan cricketers to be bought at the IPL auction last year. Thirteen Afghan players have registered themselves for the IPL auction on January 27-28.

Historic India vs Afghanistan Test from June 14 in Bangalore

Afghanistan cricket team will play their historic and maiden cricket Test against India from June 14 to 18 in Bangalore. It will be a major boost to the war-ravaged country’s cricketing profile.

The decision was taken after officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) met in New Delhi on Tuesday.

“Considering that June is a rainy month, we thought it was best to host the historic Test in Bangalore,” BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary said.

Bangalore was in the running as the leading venue for the match after the BCCI, last month, announced that it would host the South Asian neighbours’ entry into Test cricket after they earned the status alongside Ireland in June 2017.

Their respective boards were made full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC), becoming the sport’s 11th and 12h Test-playing nations.

Besides welcoming them into five-day cricket, the BCCI has extended a helping hand to Afghanistan on a number of occasions.

The Afghanistan cricket team has hosted its home games in India, most recently the series against Ireland in Greater Noida.

Rashid Khan and Mohammed Nabi became the first two Afghanistan cricketers to be bought at the Indian Premier League (IPL) players’ auction last year.

Thirteen Afghan players have registered themselves for the IPL auction on January 27-28.

Anybody else going to watch this? I just might.

Honestly I expect India to win a low scoring affair.

AFG could well cause India some serious bowling issues

Of course we're going to win in good old Bangalore.

But we might get belted in the return series in Kabul, Herat and Kandahar. :batman:

Imagine,it took 17 years for Bangladesh to play the only test (no bilateral odi or t20) in India!!! They are huge lucky.

Kohli among quartet rested for India’s one-off Test against Afghanistan

India have announced their squad for the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan.

As expected, India’s selectors have chosen to rest some key players from the historic Test match – it will be Afghanistan’s first in the format – with captain Virat Kohli, batsman Rohit Sharma, and fast bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah all sitting out.

However, some players who it had been speculated might not take part have been included. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma will take breaks from their stints in English domestic cricket in order to play – the match takes place between County Championship fixtures so they may not miss any action for their respective counties – while Ravichandran Ashwin is also playing, despite rumours he would be left out.

In Kohli’s absence, Ajinkya Rahane will captain the team, the second time he has stepped into the role as understudy; he also did so against Australia in 2017 when Kohli suffered a shoulder injury.

Called up in place of those left out are Karun Nair, who became India’s second triple-centurion against England in 2016 but was dropped after a poor series versus Australia, and Shardul Thakur, who received his first Test call-up. The fast bowler made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in August 2017 and impressed during India’s ODI series against South Africa earlier this year.

The match will begin on 14 June at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. As well as being Afghanistan’s first ever Test, it will be the first Test match ever played in India in June.

Squad: Ajinkya Rahane (c), Cheteshwar Pujara, Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, Ishant Sharma, Shardul Thakur

That'a a very strong squad. Not the India C team many predicted it would be.

Test match in Mid June ? Is this the right weather to play day time cricket ?

Suddenly realised what a dud team this is !!
Other than Kohli and Bhuvi I don't see any of our first choice XI missing in the list. If we are gonna call it a dud team, then upcoming Eng tour will be a nightmare. Probably better if we don't turn into PP for couple of months.

Huge difference between Kohli led Indian team and Kohli less Indian team. Even with Kohli , this team will get obliterated in England. Vijay , Dhawan , Pujara etc are out of form or have lost it.

We won the Dharmashala test without kholee and BK and Bumrah. That was a pressure match.

If both Rashid Khan and Mujeeb play, India will find themselves in trouble.

Afghan pacers are weak. But their spinners are world class.

Problem with Afghans is their weak batting lineup.

You don't need to attack Rashid Khan in test. You have to play late on your back foot. His bowls don't spin much. I don't see him succeeding much in test until he slows it down and turns more. He has to be played safe though and try not to score runs off his overs.

Rest Indian batting lineup and their spinners and Pacers will make it a great challenge for Afghans.

Rohit is not sitting out, he has been dropped from the test side.

Vijay
Dhawan
Rahul
Pujara
Rahane
Saha
Ashwin
Pandya
Jadeja
Umesh/Ishant
Shami

Will most likely be the combination. Rahul probably will have to bat in the middle order or at number 3 pushing Pujara to number 4. Nair will not get a game unless India decides to play only 4 bowlers.

This. If T20 bowling was the same as Tests then Sunil Narine would have been winning a lot for Windies. Also you have to bowl a lot more overs under the hot sun rather than 4 over you bowl in T20s. Hence, need more stamina and control.Let us see whether he got that all or not.

India has played an almost full squad. Expecting Afghanis to get a hiding.

Afghanistan bowling talent has been fully on display around the world and in this IPL. They have some very good batsmen too. Plenty of experience in playing in big leagues around the world prior to test debut.

Obviously test cricket is a different ball game. Afghanistans' long format Associate experience will come in handy there.

Some entrants struggled to earn their stripes for a long time in test cricket. Are Afghanistan set to write a different story?

Rashid, Mujeeb, Nabi - will be interesting to watch them bowl a spinning track. Amazing how Afghnistan have got two most exciting youngsters in their bowling line up. If only they could get equally talented two young batsmen!

Afghanistan name squad for historic Test

Teen sensation Rashid Khan will lead a heavyweight spin attack for Afghanistan in the country's first-ever Test against India next month, the Afghan cricket board announced Tuesday.

Khan and fellow spinners Mujeeb ur Rahman, Zahir Khan and Hamza Hotak were named in a 16-strong squad for the historic one-off Test in Bangalore starting June 14.

The 19-year-old Khan was a star performer in the Indian Premier League with 21 wickets for Sunrisers Hyderabad, who lost in Sunday's final to Chennai Super Kings.

Rahman, 17, also impressed in the cash-rich league with 14 scalps for Kings XI Punjab.

Asghar Stanikzai will captain the Test debutants in the five-day game which will be preceded by three Twenty20 internationals against Bangladesh.

The T20 games will be played in the northern Indian city of Dehradun on June 3, 5 and 7.

Afghanistan have had their training base in India since 2015, and were given Test status last year with Ireland, who lost their first five-day match to Pakistan earlier this month.

Afghanistan will be underdogs in the Test against India, but they will start as favourites against Bangladesh in the T20 clashes.

Afghanistan Test squad: Asghar Stanikzai (capt), Mohammad Shahzad, Javed Ahmadi, Ihsanullah Jannat, Rahmat Shah, Nasir Jamal, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afsar Zazai, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Zahir Khan, Hamza Hotak, Syed Ahmad Sherzad, Yamin Ahmadzai, Wafadar Momand, Mujeeb ur Rahman

Afghanistan T20 squad: Asghar Stanikzai (capt), Mohammad Shahzad, Najeebullah Tarakai, Usman Ghani, Najibullah Zadran, Samiullah Shinwari, Shafiqullah Shafaq, Darwish Rasooli, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Karim Jannat, Rashid Khan, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Shapoor Zadran, Aftab Alam

India Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha on Thursday remained unsure of his participation in the one-off Test against Afghanistan next month. Saha missed the Indian Premier League (IPL) final for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) due to the injury he picked up while playing the Qualifier 2 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on May 25. India take on Afghanistan in its debut Test match from June 14 in Bengaluru where Saha is the only recognised stumper named in the squad. "The way I feel, to be honest, I might not be fit in time. Ultimately, the selectors will decide. It's not in my hands," Saha told reporters on the sidelines of the announcement of his coaching programme at the Kalighat Club.

"I don't know the exact situation right now, so I cannot comment on whether I would be taking part in the Afghanistan Test. The BCCI is keeping a track on my injury on a day-to-day basis. It will depend on how I recover and whether I do in time for the one-off test," he added.

Saha said an operation is not on the cards at the moment as the BCCI specialist doctor will further assess his injury in a few days and only after an x-ray, will the next course of action be decided.

"(Operation is) not yet confirmed. Doctor will assess again and then he will take a call. There will be an x-ray in the next few days and then it will be decided."

Asked whether he would rue the fact that he won't be part of Afghanistan's first-ever Test match if he finally fails to recover in time, Saha said, "It's not only about the historic occasion. Missing a game is always disappointing."

"There was a local club game for Kalighat Club against Mohun Bagan today, I could not take part in that. I am disappointed for that as well. So missing any game is disappointing."

Saha had a poor IPL, managing just 122 runs in 10 innings at an average of 15.25. Quizzed about his form in front of the stumps, the 33-year-old said he could not execute what he set out for.

"I could not bat the way I wanted to in the IPL. I expected to do better but that did not happen."

At the Eden in the IPL Qualifier 2, Saha saw Afghanistan spin wizard Rashid Khan tie KKR batsmen in knots with stunning figures of 3/19.

The 19-year-old leg-spinner had also smashed an unbeaten 10-ball 30 before that to help Sunrisers post 174/7 batting first.

Rashid's whirlwind cameo and sensational bowling effort made the difference in the end as the hosts lost by 14 runs to allow Sunrisers to book a place in the final.

"He is an outstanding cricketer both with bat and ball," Saha said of the world's best T20 bowler.

"In the lower order especially, this season barring one or two games, he has helped the team get into a situation from where we could win games.

(He is an) outstanding bowler and he will have a long career. I wish him all the best."

Saha was also asked if his probable Afghanistan Test miss could be a blessing in disguise ahead of the sought-after England tour.

"To me every match is important. It't not like if I miss the Afghan Test, I will do well in England as I am rested. I have to perform well in every game and that is what I am concerned about," he signed off.

MUMBAI (Reuters) - India’s Wriddhiman Saha has been ruled out of this month’s one-off test against Afghanistan with a thumb injury that will need up to six weeks to heal, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Saturday.

The 33-year-old wicketkeeper injured his right thumb while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League playoffs on May 25.

Saha will be replaced by Dinesh Karthik for the match starting June 14 in Bengaluru, when Afghanistan will make their debut in the five-day format after being granted full member status along with Ireland last June.

“He was under observation by the medical staff of the BCCI and the management has decided to give him adequate rest before the start of the England test series,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“Saha’s recovery period is expected to be around five to six weeks.”

India will also be without regular captain Virat Kohli against Afghanistan. The batting mainstay opted to play for the English county championship side Surrey in June but was ruled out after injuring his neck while fielding during the IPL.

Saha has been India’s regular gloveman since the retirement of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in December 2014. He has played 32 tests and averages above 30 with the bat.

India begin their tour of England in July with three Twenty20 internationals and three one-day internationals before a five-test series starting in August.

Weather in bangalore in the last few days has been very gloomy. I expect a rain affected match again.

Should be able to get 3-3.5 days of cricket in atleast. Will be enough to get a decent match going.

Looking forward for Afg to tick off atleast one of their first 5-fer and century milestones.

India pacer Mohammed Shami was dropped from the Test team for the one-off match against Afghanistan after he failed to clear the fitness test at NCA, Bengaluru, BCCI's All-India Senior Selection Committee said on Monday. Fast bowler Navdeep Saini was named as Shami's replacement for the lone Test. "The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Navdeep Saini as Mohammed Shami's replacement in the Indian Test team for the upcoming Paytm Test against Afghanistan. The announcement came after Shami failed to clear the fitness test at NCA, Bengaluru", the media release said.
India A fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Rajneesh Gurbani were also asked by the team management to attend the training sessions.

"The Indian team management has requested that India A fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Rajneesh Gurbani attend the training sessions of the Indian team and bowl at the Indian batsmen in the nets. A request was also made for Ankit Rajpoot, but the Uttar Pradesh fast bowler is unwell," the release added.

Meanwhile, the selection committee has named Ishan Kishan in India A team for the away one-day series against England Lions and West Indies A.
Sanju Samson, who was originally named in the squad, also failed his fitness test and was replaced by former India Under 19 captain, who cleared his fitness test.

India play Afghanistan in the one-off Test in Bengaluru beginning June 14.

Navdeep Saini included in for the squad as Shami failed yo-yo test.
Navdeep was someone that was promoted massively by Gauti , says a lot about Gauti though, everyone remembers what Saini did in Ranji semis but no one knows the politics that was done to keep NAVDEEP away from team and how Gauti fought tooth and nail to include him.

Hoping Gauti becomes an administrator in BCCI genuinely trust him and Kumble much more than Curren co.
