Afghanistan vs West Indies 2019 series (in India)

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today named Keemo Paul as the replacement for Fabian Allen in the T20 International Series against Afghanistan.

Allen, the left-arm spinner and right-hander batsman, suffered an injury to his right knee while fielding in the first contest of the three-match series on Thursday night at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, India.

Scans revealed a Grade 1 posterior cruciate ligament sprain and he is expected to be out of cricket for approximately two weeks. CWI is making arrangements for Allen to remain in India and complete his rehabilitation.

Paul is right-arm medium-fast bowler who bats right-handed. He has so far played 16 T20Is – with 20 wickets including a best of 5-15 against Bangladesh in Dhaka last year. The 21-year-old was part of the ODI squad which won 3-0 earlier in the tour.

West Indies lead the series 1-0 following their win the opening match. The series continues on Saturday night and Sunday night at the same venue. First ball daily is 7pm (9:30am Eastern Caribbean/8:30am Jamaica).

Some really ordinary umpiring on display here. Umpire missed a plumb LBW and than gave out to a ball pitching couple of feet outside the leg.

Kareem Janat looks to be the much needed pace bowling all rounder Afghanistan needed. Considering the amount of decent spinners they have, he provides the much needed balance to the side.

West Indies fell well short of their target of 148 as Afghanistan's Karim Janat took 5/11 to rip through their middle order in the second T20I.

Afghanistan got off to a flying start after electing to bat first, with Hazrutullah Zazai taking 16 runs from Jason Holder's opening over, including a first-ball six clubbed over deep square leg. Sheldon Cottrell began strongly at the other end though, just five runs coming from his first over before being top-edged over the wicket-keeper three balls in a row in his next.

The following over, delivered by Kesrick Williams (3/23), brought the downfall of both Afghanistani openers. Rahmanullah (15) was well caught by Kieron Pollard, catching a skier over his shoulder, and Hazratullah (26) could only find point with his attempted drive the following ball.

Holder (2/23) found significantly more success in his second spell, with his third and fourth overs going for a single run apiece as well as accounting for Asghar Afghan (8) and Janat (26). Keemo Paul (2/28), in for the injured Fabian Allen, claimed the next pair of wickets deceiving both Ibrahim Zadran (11) and Mohammad Nabi (3) with changes of pace, and with four overs left Afghanistan were well below a competitive total at 104/6. But Gulbadin Naib and Najilbullah Zadran managed to lift their side to close on 147/7, the former dismissed in the final over for 24 and the latter unbeaten on 20.

West Indies' reply was immediately stifled by some tight bowling, and 20-year-old seamer Naveen-ul-Haq sent Brandon King (12) on his way with an off-cutter to leave them 17/1 in the fourth over. That score had barely been doubled when Janat's introduction sparked a huge collapse. Shimron Hetmyer (11), Evin Lewis (14), Sherfane Rutherford (6), Kieron Pollard (7), and Keemo Paul (11) all fell victim to the seamer as he finished with extraordinary figures of 5/11, Afghanistan's second-best T20I figures behind only Rashid Khan's 5/3 against Ireland in 2017.

From that point on the challenge always looked too great for the visitors, and a final over by Gulbadin Naib (1/22) which went for only seven runs confirmed a final margin of 41 runs. The teams meet again for the deciding match tomorrow at the same venue.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Cricket West Indies today announced that Shai Hope has been called up as replacement for Denesh Ramdin for the third and final T20 International against Afghanistan on Sunday night at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, India.

Ramdin, the experienced wicket-keeper/batsman and two-time ICC World T20 winner, played the first and second matches but is unavailable for the third due to a left hamstring injury. He made scores of 20 and 24 not out and held five catches in the two matches.

Hope, who was the leading batsmen in the recent 3-0 clean sweep in the One-Day Internationals with 229 runs in three innings including a match-wining century in the final match. He remained in India for the upcoming Test match, which starts on November 27.

The 26-year-old has so far played 12 T20 Internationals since making his debut against New Zealand in December, 2017.

Congratulations to Afghanistan. I always believed they could beat West Indies in subcontinent. West Indies can't play spin well.

Really disappointing stuff from WI and not good signs for their T20 WC chances and exceptional performance from Afg.

Afghanistan won by 29 runs

Well done!

Naveen Ul Haq impressed in U19 WC as well and has done extremely well in this series too. He even was the captain in U19 WC so its good for Afghanistan to have an impressive young pacer who can also support in the leadership aspects of the side.

Seventeen-year-old Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit 79 and 20-year-old Naveen-ul-Haq returned figures of 3/23 as Afghanistan eased to a 29-run win over West Indies to secure a 2-1 series victory.

As he had in the previous game, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and chose to bat first. It was a decision he may have soon regretted as Hazratullah Zazai (0) and Karim Janat (2) were both dismissed by Sheldon Cottrell (2/29) leaving the hosts 12/2 after three overs.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz however held firm and launched a one-man counter-attack. The partnership between the opener and Ibrahim Zadran was worth 32 when the latter was run out for a solitary run.

Rahmanullah continued unperturbed though, and reached fifty from 37 balls in the 11th over as he built a strong partnership with Asghar Afghan (24). But just as Asghar began to get going he mistimed a hook shot and was caught in the ring by Brandon King from the bowling of Keemo Paul (2/26), the partnership worth 50 in 6.1 overs.

The assault from the teenaged opener continued unabated, supported by a run-a-ball 14 from Najibullah Zadran, until Kieron Pollard (1/21) finally had him caught for a 52-ball 79 on the point boundary slashing at a short ball. A late barrage from Mohammad Nabi (15) boosted the total up to 156/8.

A pair of early wickets, one each for Mujeeb Ur Rahman (1/9 from three overs) and Naveen-ul-Haq (3/23), left the West Indies' chase floundering at 16/2. When Karim Janat trapped Evin Lewis in front with the final ball of the eighth over, the visitors still needed 115 runs and their chances seemed to be disappearing further with every ball. Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer (11) were not lacking in intent but struggled to find consistent timing on a tricky pitch against good bowling.

Rashid Khan induced a leading edge from Hetmyer to end his stay, but Hope's persistence began to pay off, and he reached his fifty from 43 balls. When he was caught from the first ball of the penultimate over though, any realistic chance departed with him. An excellent final over from Naveen-ul-Haq which went for just four runs and saw the end of Jason Holder (6) left the final margin of defeat unflattering to the visitors, but the victory was well deserved by a fine all-round performance by Afghanistan's youngsters.

Afghanistan all-rounder Karim Janat, who bagged six wickets from two games in the T20I series against West Indies, has been awarded with a maiden Test call-up, alongside 20-year-old Nijat Masood, for the one-off Test beginning Wednesday, 27 November in Lucknow.

Janat had produced an all-round show: first contributing with an 18-ball 26 with the bat and following it up with a match winning 5/11 with the ball, in the second T20I, which helped Afghanistan win their first game of the season. He finished with returns of 1/33 in the following game as the Rashid Khan led side sealed the series with a 29-run win.

The 21-year old will now feature in Afghanistan's Test squad, alongside young fast-bowler Nijat Masood, who is yet to make an international appearance. The 15-member squad also features left-arm spinner Amir Hamza Hotak and batsman Nasir Jamal, both of whom have represented Afghanistan in white-ball cricket earlier. Hotak makes an international comeback after almost two years while Jamal's last appearance came during the ODI series against Zimbabwe in March last year.

Afghanistan will play their fourth Test without Mohammad Nabi, after the all-rounder had announced his retirement from the longest version after his team's historic 223-run win against Bangladesh in September. Veteran left-arm pacer Shapoor Zadran and batsman Hashmatullah Shahidi are the other notable absentees from the squad, with left arm pacer Sayed Shirzad too missing out.

This will be Afghanistan's second home Test, after they had beaten Ireland by seven wickets at the same venue in March this year, to register their first win of the format.

Full squad: Rashid Khan (captain), Asghar Afghan, Ihsanullah Janat, Ibrahim Zadran, Javed Ahmadi, Rahmat Shah, Karim Janat, Qais Ahmed, Ikram Alikhiel (wicketkeeper), Afsar Zazai, Nasir Jamal, Zahir Khan, Yamin Ahmadzai, Hamza Hotak, Nijat Masood.

Dumb decision by Holder. Why would you let them bat first? That's their strength and their spinners get to bowl last.

West Indies allrounder Rahkeem Cornwall returned with best figures of 7/75, as Afghanistan slipped from 90/2 to 187 all out on the opening day of their one-off Test, at Lucknow, on Wednesday, 27 November.

In response, Afghanistan ended the day by removing two West Indies wickets, but John Campbell (30*) and Shamarh Brooks (19*) ended the day at 68/2 with an unbeaten 34-run stand, ensuring no further damage was done.

Afghanistan’s left-arm spinner Amir Hamza removed Kraigg Brathwaite leg-before for 11, and Rashid Khan spun one sharply away from Shai Hope (7), taking an outside edge along to first slip. Hamza tested Shamarh Brooks by spinning the ball both into him and away, but Brooks survived a couple of close calls.

Before the Test started, a lot of focus was drawn towards Afghanistan’s spinners, and how they would be utilising Lucknow’s turning pitch to test the West Indies’ top-order.

However, it was Cornwall, playing only his second Test, stuck to a consistent line, using the sharp turn and the moisture on the pitch to his advantage. The 6’5’’ off-spinner gave West Indies their first breakthrough, picking up Ibrahim Zadran to break the 28-run opening stand. His opening partner Javed Ahmadi, who ended as the team’s top-scorer, and Ihsanullah Janat then combined to stitch together a 56-run stand.

A four and a six, off consecutive deliveries from Cornwall, highlighted Ahmadi’s approach to dominate the bowlers ahead of lunch, but he departed trying to take on Jomel Warrican, lofting a catch straight to long-off.

Post lunch, Afghanistan’s innings took a steep dive, slipping from 90/2 to 98/6 in the space of six overs, with all four wickets going to Cornwall. It was his 17th first-class five-wicket haul, and first in Tests, and also the first by a West Indies spinner since January this year. He ended with the best figures by a West Indian bowler in India since Andy Roberts’ 7/64 against India in 1975.

Wicket-keeper Afzar Zazai then helped Afghanistan spark in a min-recovery, finding company in No.9 Amir Hamza, to take the side past 150. Zazai started off with back-to-back fours, and collected one more in his 70-ball effort, partnering Hamza for a 54-run stand that gave Afghanistan’s bowlers something to bowl at. A late flourish by Yamin Ahmadzai, with three fours and a six, took Afghanistan close to 200, but Cornwall returned to claim his seventh victim, off the third ball of the 69th over.

West Indies’ innings began with a four off a misfield; the openers steadily build on a start, countering Afghanistan’s opening combination of spin and pace from either end. Campbell, pushed to his crease by Hamza slog swept Rashid Khan for a six in the eight over, the bowler’s first. Hamza, however, captured Brathwaite for 11, his 20th consecutive sub-50 score since his twin centuries against Bangladesh in 2018.

Shai Hope’s dismissal brought in Brooks early, but Campbell held one end occupied; the onus will be on the two overnight batsmen to deal with the early moisture, and further reduce Afghanistan’s lead, which currently stands at 119.
