LONDON: Pakistan's 'Mr Tennis' Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi is looking forward to welcoming the Indian Davis Cup team for the
Asia-Oceania Group I tie in Islamabad in September (14-15).

Should Prajnesh Gunneswaran & Co get the go-ahead to cross over, it will be the first time since 1964 that the four-man Indian side will play on neighbouring soil. The home-and-away format of the tournament was last honoured when India hosted Pakistan in Mumbai in 2006.

"Time was always right," the ever-smiling Qureshi, 39, said. "Politics and sport should not be mixed. It's great when India and Pakistan play in any sport, especially at home. It hasn't happened in cricket for a while. I will always cherish the memories of our last tie in Mumbai."

"I've always felt loved in India, it's like coming home. I can tell you, all of Pakistan, especially the tennis fraternity is waiting to welcome your Davis Cup team. I'm out cheering for them when they play, Bopanna and Purav Raja. I spent a lot of time recently with Leander Paes. So yes, I look forward to welcoming my friends to Islamabad."

Pakistan’s tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq has qualified for the third round of the men’s doubles event in the ongoing Australian Open.

Aisam and his Serbian partner Nikola Cacic won their second round match on Saturday against Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin by a scoreline of 7-6 and 7-6.

Pakistan tennis star Aisam ul Haq Qureshi outclassed David Agung Susanto of Indonesia in the first singles match of the Davis Cup World Group-II tie at his own named Aisam-ul-Haq Tennis Pavilion located at Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad on Saturday. He dominate his opponent and won the fixture in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
In the second singles, Vetran Aqeel Khan beat Gunawan Trismuwantara 7-5, 6-4 in an exciting match. Gunawan served for the first set at 5-4, but Aqeel fought back gallantly to take the next three games, and the set 7-5. Aqeel broke his opponent early in the second set and kept control of the remaining set to win 6-4 and give Pakistan a 2-0 lead, going into the second day.

He added that Aisam has ACE academy to look after, therefore, fulfilling the duties of president of the tennis federation would be problematic.

“I am afraid that all the budget, resources and energy of PTF will possibly be diverted to his ACE academy,” he said.

He said that Aisam always took an appearance fee of $3000 in each Davis Cup tie he participated along with business class tickets in case a match was held abroad.

He added, the PTF management had to spend almost half of its budget on Aisam every time.

“If under some circumstances he is elected the President, he will be presenting a budget to fill his own pockets in terms of appearance fee which will prove to be a big joke,” Hameed concluded.

Aisam wants tennis to be the second-best sport after cricket​

As the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) has begun its quest to train the youth through highly skillful reputed international coaches and trainers, Aisam ul Haq wants to see the game competing with cricket in popularity in years to come.

In a media talk specially organized to share ATP Coach Robert Davis’s experience who completed his ten-day stint with juniors at the PTF Complex, the PTF President said he wanted to revolutionize the game, making it a public sport and the one which would be the second most popular sport behind cricket in the country.

“Recent measures adopted by the PTF that have taken Masters to the major cities of the country is an endeavor to popularize the game in bigger cities. We have just completed the Masters Tennis in Faisalabad and have already organized such events in Sialkot and Peshawar. Hundreds of youngsters were invited and given the game know-how. This is an effort to lure the youth towards the game of tennis. Around the world, it is the most sought-after sport. Our effort is to make tennis popular in smaller cities by providing basic facilities to the youth.”

Robert Davis who shared his experience with journalists termed Pakistan as talented and technically sound. “ During my ten-day stay here I worked on the juniors and found them technically sound. What they are lacking is physical fitness and international exposure.

The lower body structure of junior players is not so strong. They need to improve their physic as well as diet which are very important components to raise the standard at the international level.”

Davis was also happy with the available crop of qualified coaches in Pakistan. “I am also glad to see Pakistan coaches having adequate knowledge about the game and have the required quality and knowledge to train the best of players.”

Sharing his positive experience in Pakistan, Robert Davis added, “I have really enjoyed my time here. The food, the people, and the hospitality are amazing.”

Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi highlighted the importance of foreign coaching expertise in developing Pakistani tennis players. “For the first time in Pakistan’s history, an American coach of Robert Davis’ caliber is here to train our players. This is a great opportunity for players to learn from world-class expertise and improve their game. The PTF is committed to providing the best facilities for our players—the gym is almost ready, and next week, another coach from America will be arriving to train our athletes.”

Addressing a question about the Myanmar Davis Cup incident, Aisam clarified, “The incident was not Robert Davis’ fault. The responsibility lay with the referee and the New Zealand team. Robert represented Pakistan in that tie, and following the incident, the referee was declared unfit to officiate any further Davis Cup tie. This was a rare decision in the 150-year history of the Davis Cup.”

Veteran Pakistani player Aqeel Khan who was part of the Pakistan Davis Cup team also commented on the Myanmar Davis Cup controversy, reinforcing that Robert Davis was not at fault.

In Lahore, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi met with the President of the Pakistan Tennis Federation, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, to discuss efforts to promote tennis in the country.

ISLAMABAD: Staging the ATP Challenger Cup for the first time in Pakistan will attract foreign players besides raising the country as an important destination for the professional sport, Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) president Aisam-ul- Haq said on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference, Aisam said that Pakistan will be hosting an ATP event from Nov 24 to 30 which he termed a milestone.

“Top international players will be seen in action at the ATP challenger event carrying a prize money of $50,000,” the PTF president said.

He said that hosting an ATP event was a dream come true for Pakistan.

“It’s a huge step forward for our players, fans and the entire sporting community. We are committed to providing world-class facilities and opportunities for our athletes,” he said and added the PTF will host this event in a befitting manner.

“Pakistan is growing as an important destination for international players. Next year we are planning to hold a mega ITF tournament,” he said while revealing that the federation was also planning to hold a tennis league next year.

Aisam said that the PTF hosted a number of international event this year in Pakistan, while 12 teams were sent abroad for different competitions.

He also appreciated talented junior players, including Mikaeel Ali Baig and Shayan Afridi, for giving outstanding performance in international events.

“Their victories are a testament to the growing talent pool in Pakistan.”

The PTF president announced plans to develop a covered court project at the PTF Tennis Complex to ensure round-the-year training opportunities for players regardless of weather conditions.
