Akshay Kumar starrer PadMan banned in Pakistan

Yeah but one does not vomit, get flu etc on a monthly basis. If it were not for this "uncleanliness" we would not be here as a species. I personally find it degrading to women as they can perform all sorts of tasks, be it high performance sports or day to day activities even during that time of the month, so why not be able to perform religious duties if they were inclined to?

It is just that religion sees them as inferior and is the same as requiring two female witnesses compared to one male witness. But if Muslim women don't have a problem with it, it is their choice, there are also a couple of really well educated female posters on here who don't seem to have a problem with this hypocrisy.

I for one was jealous and wished to have this "condition" on many an occasion before when my sisters were exempted from all their religious duties just because they were "unclean".
Can’t they pray after cleaning? Or is it that even after, they are exempt from praying?

Not sure I agree. Do you speak for all Pakistani ladies ? The movie openly talks about periods and dispel any myths and taboos aroundnit and even show that “hey there is a problem” in rural places where woman can not afford pads and other such topics. The movie is meant to not brush anything under the rug.

I think the real life person who the movie is based on summed it up best when he mentions the below bit from the article I posted above

“He believes that our country cannot be called 'developed' if we cannot make mothers of this nation healthy”

“'We want to create 1 million dignified rural employments for women and want to convert India into a 100 per cent sanitary-napkin-using country,'”

I know the Pak mindset and don't see many ladies protesting in Pak about the movie being banned. Most Pak ladies would be embarrassed to watch such movies with unrelated men. We don't need to follow the west at everything, India can do whatever it wants. I am sure you don't discuss such issues with ladies in your own family yet want for the movie to be shown in public cinema's. Does not mean the subject should not be discussed behind closed doors or the medical community.

Nope, its applicable as long as they are suffering from "the condition".
I actually think it’s a good thing. The poor women should not be worrying about religious duties in that condition. The timing of this could not be more weird. My sister went through terrible pain two days ago and it was heartbreaking to see a normally strong and bull-headed person just lie down in anguish.

Society also does many things behind closed doors. We don't discuss toilet or bedroom activity openly!

Yes we just discuss who can and can not eat or in Ramadan in public, or who can or cannot show their love for someone on a specific day, etc. The rest of the civilized world has moved on and see the things we do in toilets and bedroom activity pretty natural, essential and common place instead of totally avoiding to talk about it.

In fact some of the funniest things I have ever heard were regarding toilets and bedroom activity.

Yes, but the whole implication here is that they're impure and is not meant as some sort of convenience to them. Surely you can see the difference. If not now, hopefully later in life.

What you are saying like showing love etc is very different to the subject here. You are being ridiculous comparing Ramadan to a ladies genetic make up. You idea's of modernisation are simply following western culture, nothing else. I bet you don't discus such issues with ladies in your own family yet want movies on such matters to be shown in Pak cinema halls. Those who boast about what they do in a toilet are shameless. Next you will say lets openly discuss the most common thing we do in a toilet!

A ladies genetic make up is what made you. Why are you so averse to western culture? They are the most progressive in the world, where everything can be debated and discussed. If you want to stay under your little rock it's up to you. Just don't write it into a law and enforce it on everyone else.

Actually, as someone who lives in the States, not everything is up for debate, even certain scholarly issues. Society used to be much more open on both sides of the world until the Medieval Ages.

Sorry, but for a long time I don't consider the States as a progressive Western culture. Also America didn't have any medieval ages. You could argue that the rest of the world was more "open" at the time but the privilege to argue belonged to a select few.

Like it or not, the States has been at the center of the world post WW2. England did go through the Medieval Ages and that’s where most of America’s “western” culture comes from. Don’t confuse vulgarity with modernisation. Sean Connery once said it was okay for a man to slap a woman, God forbid if a Muslim man said the same thing.

Just because they have been in the centre post r WW2 (which was a long time ag)o does not mean they can necessarily be deemed as a progressive culture at the moment. Just to be are clear, we are talking about culture, human rights etc and not economy here. However I am not denying Afro American rights etc but that was a totally different generation which was actually forced on its knees.

Are you really comparing an actor in the who played the macho, womanizing "fictional" Bond with all current Muslim men? Muslims have to realize that they like the Soviet Union in the past are the current enemy. The Soviets didn't go blowing things up in the name if Lenin either. Try to take things in their context.

I did not say a lady does not give everyone birth but why do you want to see such things in cinema halls. Why don't you understand that their is a thing called modesty? I love many things about the west that is not to say we should blindly follow everything they do. Do you want strip clubs and gambling joints in Pakistan as well? Where do you draw the line? As I said before don't expect other Pak/Muslim ladies to discuss such topics with strangers when you don't even do so with ladies in your own family. You can blindly follow the west at everything just don't expect everyone to follow suit. You are a very small minority who wants to discuss such things openly in Pakistan. I don't see any Pakistanis protesting over your stupid move being banned.

But where's the solution?

I believe a proactive Pakistani government could have offered a charitable donation to the cause or highlighted its ongoing efforts to fight the problem. And yes, this is a real problem causing major health issues in women especially the poor.

After doing this, a ban is okay to maintain "modesty."

In the ban's current state, it comes across like "if we don't see it then it's not happening."

I'm not certain what modesty does when your mothers and daughters are dying.

Pakistan does it again

After Padman, Pakistan has now banned Siddharth Malhotra’s upcoming release Aiyaary for showing corruption in the army and a negative portrayal of Pakistan. A source says, “Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI has refused to issue an NOC for the film.” Interestingly, Aiyaary had to get an NOC from the Indian Army too.
This is director Neeraj Pandey’s third film banned by Pakistan. His earlier films Baby and Naam Shabana also did not release there.

Just recently, Pakistan had refused an NOC and then cleared Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat which had a tough time getting a censor certificate.

Neeraj Pandey’s films per se have been a target in Pakistan as most of his films have been around patriotic themes.

“This time I had told my team to not even try for a Pakistan release. But then we had the luxury of time due to frequent postponement of the film.
We had strong queries (demand for the film) from Pakistan, but I knew that it will not get released there.”

Neeraj, whose film Special 26 released in Pakistan, but others like A Wednesday, Baby and even MS Dhoni did not release there, feels that many of films have a problem in Pakistan. “I don’t think I am a problem. It has to be the film. The theme (Aiyaary) is very patriotic and doesn’t cut well there. Even MS Dhoni was not allowed to be shown in Pakistan,” he says. Sushant Singh Rajput who played the role of Dhoni was shown to be visiting Pakistan for a cricket tour there.

It must be noted that in 2017, Pakistan banned six Hindi films including Tiger Zinda Hai, Tubelight and Raees. Meanwhile, Aiyaary releases in India on February 16.

I don't think even the people in rural India going out to watch this movie. It's still a taboo subject.

A movie about menstrual hygiene? Bollywood is truly trash, it should be banned and other national films should be dubbed and shown such as South Korean or British.

Most of the bollywood movies are trash, i agree but what's wrong in creating awareness in menstrual hygeine among woman? It's an important topic because thousands of woman are being killed in the rural parts of India and Pakistan because of this.

lol have you seen South Korean and British movies.

sizable portion of the stuff would need to be skipped to fit Pakistani/Islamic sensitivities if a movie about hygiene offends it

Bollywood A List actors and their new found obsession with social issues being watered down for a family audience.

Gone are the days when big name actors would actually engage in a realist role.

So a movie based on Lakshmikant Chauhan, a real life innovator and revolutionary in female hygiene products isn't a realist role?

Nothing at all, if it's needed its very important to create awarness and educate but in the form of a movie seems a bit strange to me. Surely schools, medical centres and family centres should provide this to ladies where they are comforatble in discussing the issue.

There are many British, Korean or other nationality movies which are not explict in nature. I dont think violence in films is a taboo in Pakistan?

The main aim of movies is usually entertainment with a view to telling a story and making money unless it's state sponsored propaganda. It seems in India this movie has got a decent reception at the box office so why not. By the same token, if Pakistan doesn't want to pass it as fit for viewing in their country, that's their call. They don't need to sponsor Indian movies any more than India needs to sponsor Pakistani artists.

The solution is simple. Take the good things from the west like health care, education and human rights whilst leaving aside all that is against our culture. Not everything the west does is to be imitated. Just because a problem may exist does not mean movies need to be shown on it. Next you will be propagating porn movies and other such illicit things to be shown in the name of freedom of expression. It is a health problem that is to be dealt by the doctor's not movie makers. Everyone in Pak is aware that is many parts of the country such problems exist, we don't need Akshay Kumar to tell us that.

By the time a woman arrives at the doctor's office, she's already a victim of this health concern and is likely seeking treatment for her condition (i.e. cervical cancer, urinary tract infections, reproductive tract infections).

And Pakistani doctors have stated most women come in when the condition is its last stages leading to their death.

In this battle against a film, the war is still being lost.

That's the point I was making and the Pakistani government showed no foresight whatsoever. Banning a film and celebrating moral superiority is silly as your own mothers and daughters die from the same problem that film was highlighting.

So, yes it's sad Akshay Kumar has to make a film to open people's eyes. This is what society has come to in countries like Pakistan and India.

On a brighter note, I suppose Pakistan's honor will remain intact as it buries its women.

They made a good movie with good message. But is this going to change anything? Absolutely nothing. Movies are good for entertainment, time pass and should be watched for that purpose only. All these social message dramas change nothing.

How do you think the taboo around menstrual hygiene be broken? through doordarshan?

Quite honestly I had no idea such a person actually existed and this was a mission for him. So yes the movie aims to inspire and teach that one person can do a lot when faced with adversity...So it’s wrong to say movies should only be watched for entertainment. That’s really ignorant if you feel you can’t take something out of an inspiring movie like this and get value out of it.

Do you think people in villages have stopped going to "Lota Party" even after watching Toilet - Ek Prem Katha?

The question here is whether ban on padman, raees justified or not?
Why pak sensor board allowed padmaavat but banned raees?

The point is that we don't need any movie to lecture us on ladies problems. Keeping in mind the modest nature of Pak ladies they will not feel comfortable watching such movies with unrelated men in cinema halls. Her visit to the doctor will not be accelerated by watching a movie. By all means we should learn the good things from the west like emphasis on education and health care. I don't understand why people like you are hell bent in the complete westernisation of Pakistan? Next you will be propagating homosexuality, gay rights and lesbianism in the name of tolerance. If such a movie is to be aired then should be in ladies only theatres or something like that. We should educate ladies through other means not such embarrassing ways. The movie is actually not even doing that well in India!
