South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has stated that the on-field umpire Aleem Dar did not hear his team’s request for a review against an lbw decision for David Miller during the series-clinching third ODI on Sunday.

The instance occurred during the 33rd over of South Africa’s innings in Hobart when Miller was ruled lbw off Glenn Maxwell on 41 and was then seen gesturing with an arm to Dar after consultation with his skipper. As per the rules, only a captain can ask for a review and as per the host broadcast, it took 18 seconds for du Plessis and Miller to ask Dar for a review, which is more than the 15-second period granted to teams.

According to du Plessis, Dar did not hear his request.

“Dave asked me what I reckon. I said ‘I think it’s pretty close but let’s have a look’,” he said after the win. ”(I) turned around to the umpire and said, ‘We’ll refer that’. I don’t think he heard me.Dave said about five seconds later, ‘We’ll refer it’. He (the umpire) was like, ‘No your time’s up’. I just said to him, ‘We said like eight seconds ago’.”

Miller, who went on to be named Man of the Match for his brilliant 139 in a record stand of 252 with du Plessies, also backed his captain.

“It was one of those where you hold your breath and hope for the best,” Miller said. “Faf did it (ask for a review) first. Obviously the umpire didn’t see or hear.”

Australian centurion Shaun Marsh did not believe the matter was controversial. “It was a big moment in the game but it wasn’t out,” he said. “I thought they batted extremely well.”

South Africa won the third ODI to claim the series 2-1.

Another poor series for Aleem. Made a number of howlers each match.

Aleem Dar is no longer that elite umpire he once was, he making many mistakes.I think his decisions are being overturned on regular basis.

standard of umpiring as a whole has been terrible recently. Aleem has been poor recently, another one that sticks out like a sore thumb is S RAVI, dunno how he got the gig. I wonder if there are stats to show how many decisions have bee overturned per umpire since introduction of DRS.

DRS also makes umpires look bad. Pretty sure bad decisions were part and parcel of the game before that but the way decisions are scrutinized now adds a lot of pressure on the officials.

That decision looked out to the naked eye. It was going over by half an inch. The people here complaining about Aleem Dar clearly didn't watch the incident and are here to troll. I miss the days when we had sane posters from the neighbouring country.

Also, for a batsman's review as per rules only the batsman can ask for it. So Miller should've asked for it not Faf.

I'm sure they are trained better too

He didnt hear this from Faf. Can happen. No need to blame umpire

Eh?Umpire has nothing else to do than watch if the batsmen review after giving a decision. Can be a game changer in crucial game

As per the rules, the batsman has to make the review sign (with his forearms) in order to challenge the decision. There's no verbal request.

In this case, Aleem Dar should not have allowed the review for a couple of reasons. 1) Miller never reviewed the decision. It was Faf who made the sign. 2) Miller did some sort of a sign (brushed his forearm with his glove) well after the 15 seconds limit. He was not keen on the review and only gave in because of Faf.

The review should not have been allowed.

If the player tells the umpire he wants to review, then one would expect the player to be looking at the umpire and making sure its heard. There is no firm technique for asking reviews - maybe in future, ICC will allow for a clear hand signal that a player has to make which is seen by all - atm this is a matter of he said, Ump said.

That is not true, MenIng. As per the rules, "review request shall be made by the player making a 'T' sign with both forearms at head height"

David Miller never followed this and whatever Faf said or did is irrelevant.

I'll be honest. I've watched the footage and I think Faf has lied here. Miller is clearly walking off.

Aussies didn't kick up a fuss for obvious reasons.

I would first make sure What Faf says is true.... He has history of cheating proved or not that's a separate matter. I wouldn't believe such a character. Any who if he didn't hear so? next time make sure you do it right way Mr. Faf:ishant

More to the point, how is that going over??

Ok if that is the case then Faf/Miller have no case.

I think Aleem Dar was a little too lenient there. He did let Faf know that Miller should be the one asking for the review. Miller did make a half-hearted sign, but it was way after the 15 seconds limit.

Also, there's no way that is going over. Haha!
