Wasim Khan at a press conference about postponement of PSL 5:

"PCB in consultation with the franchises has postponed PSL with a view of rescheduling for a later date.

"We said we were working with the local govt. We decided to play behind closed doors, first in Karachi then Lahore. The decision was made to protect everyone involved with the PSL.

"We're facing a pandemic globally and people are losing lives. Safety is paramount.

"We took a number of measures including thermal guns to check temperatures of players and officials. We decided to reduce the number of days and matches and gave the option to the players to leave and take no further part in the PSL.

"We felt it was our right to do that. We had an obligation to do that. We gave the local players the option as well and implemented all the measures for everyone involved.

"The decision we have taken this morning has been taken after consultation. The franchises have supported us.

"We are supporting the govt. initiative for a few things, big issues in Pakistan. One is drugs awareness, and now the other is coronavirus which is affected the whole word. We're here to listen to the govt and support them and it's our obligation to ensure everyone's safety and to raise awareness of this. That is why we have taken this decision.

"A player is potentially suspected of having the virus. But that player's identity is private, we won't take his name, but there is a suspected case. He is an overseas player who isn't in Pakistan and has developed the symptoms in the last 24 hours.

"We were taking all precautionary measures. Previously the govt. told us to play behind closed doors. Now according to the circumstances, we felt it's best to postpone the tournament.

"The teams were ready to play today. Multan and Peshawar were leaving their hotels when we made this decision. Franchises take care of their players and their well being.

"The player who is suspected has departed Pakistan. When he told us he has the symptoms, then we took this measure. It's not about panicking, it was a thought out response. We hadn't made this decision before but when we found out about the suspected case, we took this decision.

"We have taken responsibility from the beginning by working with local govts. First we decided to play it in empty stadiums, we had empty stadiums then we had screening. We gave players the option to leave. We were also considering preponement. We took all the measures for betterment.

"After the suspected case, we decided it was best to postpone it.

"PCB has to make decisions. Local govts. can give us advice about supporters, fans, etc. But the decision is up to PCB. The players are our responsibility and we have to look after the health and well-being of the players. When we knew there was a suspected case, we took this decision.

"We intend to postpone this tournament, not cancel it. We will reschedule it. We haven't decided when we will do that, we will discuss with franchises and come to a decision.

"Teams weren't refusing to play but they did have concerns after this suspected case came up.

"Everything isn't about profit, we're talking about lives and health. Players have families, kids. That is the most important thing. This is not a costly decision, it's a good decision. We will reschedule and have the SFs and final later.

"The whole world is planning now. Sport has come to a halt. Cricket has been cancelled everywhere, it's not a new thing. First and foremost, we have to be concerned about everyone's health and safety. This is a major pandemic affecting everyone. Cricket comes second. We will resume the cricket when it's possible."

I find it pretty stupid to not name the player. Is he suffering from AIDS? When you know this virus can spread by just coming in contact then why are you risking the lives of those who met that player? What if he is tested +ve now? Just name that player so that others can quickly get themselves tested.

How do we know that Hales didnt get the infection on the plane or airport or in UK itself?

Decision taken is a sensible one.

Why can't they name the person as Viru bhai pointed out?

PCB had an opportunity to act professionally and cancel the tournament one week ago.

When they decided to go "no-crowds", that was the right time to ask everyone to go home and have no responsibility on PSL's shoulders.

But it's too late now. We're giving a bad name to PSL. Just because we wanted a final to be played desperately, without caring about how terrible things would become even if one person gets positive or suspected.

Sad incompetence.

No one is giving a bad name to PSL calm down.

Maybe they told the teams, but aren't telling public.

Hales kept on travelling back and forth between UAE and Pakistan during PSL. Wont be surprised if he got it in the middle east.

The Punjab province is under Section 144, a law that bans all private and public sports activity as well as other public gatherings. The PCB had taken special permission to have the remaining games behind closed doors, but Gaddafi Stadium still had a large presence of mediapersons during the last few games, and post-match presentation ceremonies and press conferences have been fairly crowded with representatives of the PCB and other stakeholders in attendance.

So, that's what PCB has been doing.

Coronavirus: Alex Hales returns to the UK and is in isolation after showing symptoms

Alex Hales has been named as the overseas player in the Pakistan Super League who caused its postponement at the semi-final stage due to showing symptoms of coronavirus.

Hales returned home to the UK 'a few days ago' and is in isolation while all players, support staff, match officials, broadcasters and production crew will undergo tests to see if they have it.

Despite the desire of Pakistan Cricket Board chief executive Wasim Khan hoping to keep Hales' identity a secret, commentator Ramiz Raja let slip in an interview on the tournament's suspension.

With games already being played behind closed doors Raja said: “It is an unfortunate scenario. A good and right decision has been made in the end. The news is coming.

“Alex Hales has developed some symptoms and the tests are underway. We, the broadcasters and the commentators, are also undergoing tests in the next two hours.”

Hales was the star turn for the Karachi Kings hitting 239 runs at an average of 59 before he returned home along with a raft of other overseas stars such as Jason Roy, James Vince and Tymal Mills, and he revealed on twitter that he was heading into self isolation.

Hales tweeted on Monday: “Self-isolation begins… TV series to binge-watch please?!”

The semi-finals were due to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday in Lahore with the Multan Sultans poised to play Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings taking on Peshawar Zalmi.

The symptoms take a while to set in, so it was most likely before he left.

Well, no.

He left around 5 days ago and the symptoms take around 3-5 days to show.

So he’s probably just gotten a cold due to the cold weather in the UK

According to studies

The incubation is 2-14 days(sometime it takes more days), it is not 100% sure that he got the virus in Pakistan

The symptoms take a while to set in, so it was most likely before he left.

It's a window of 5 to 7.5 days.

From departure to symptoms, if it's less than 5 days, he got infected in Pakistan.

If its more than 7.5 days, he got infected in flight or in UK.

If it is between 05 to 7.5 days, that's a grey zone.

An incubation period is the time between when you contract a virus and when your symptoms start.

Currently, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Trusted Source, the incubation period for the novel coronavirus is somewhere between 2 to 14 days after exposure.

According to a recent reportTrusted Source, more than 97 percent of people who contract SARS-CoV-2 show symptoms within 11.5 days of exposure. The average incubation period seems to be around 5 days. However, this estimate may change as we learn more about the virus.

For many people, COVID-19 symptoms start as mild symptoms and gradually get worse over a few days.

Are you guys for real?

It's a moot point. It doesn't matter where he got it. Nobody will be asking SON WHERE DID YOU CATCH IT.

At the end of the day, it affects PSL. And its reputation.

Had they sent everyone back home last week, things would be so much better today.

Now all the production crews and players are stuck at their hotels, getting tested, waiting for the results.

If he got infected here, surely someone from KK squad or managment will be infected as well.

It is important for players, fans, security people and hotel staff that had contact with Hales

Ramiz Raja! What an idiot for letting the identity slip. Why can't they respect someone's privacy?

Tell me the source

You quoted the source in next post itself. 05-7.5 days is the window of highest probability.

According to WHO :
The “incubation period” means the time between catching the virus and beginning to have symptoms of the disease. Most estimates of the incubation period for COVID-19 range from 1-14 days, most commonly around five days.

These estimates will be updated as more data become available.

Calm down. You’re getting too excited. Just take a break.

Also, why are you assuming that he has the virus?

He probably doesn’t. He’s just feeling the cold weather in the UK. I’ve been feeling it for the past week

Ramiz Raja! What an idiot for letting the identity slip. Why can't they respect someone's privacy?

Hales HIMSELF revealed he's in self-isolation. On Insta stories.

He also didn't say Hales as the virus. Just that he has some symptoms.

Hales said he's in self-isolation, which is the case with most players who returned from PSL. Same for Aus/NZ players.

Ramiz said that Hales is undergoing tests. He let it out.

Guys. Hales has NOT tested positive. Please don't believe all that you see on social media, unless it's verifiable news.

The symptoms take a while to set in, so it was most likely before he left.

It can take upto 14 days but symptoms can appear earlier as well. Firstly we dont know if he is positive or not and secondly we dont know whether he has been exposed to the virus in plane, UK or Pakistan. Again there is nothing confirmed yet, 14 days quarantine (Staying at home) is now a standard procedure in most countries.

fake news as always ppers jumping the gun and all sorts, always look at the facts before you pass judgement.

You know he has symptoms and you allow him to leave Pakistan by flight. I don't have words for such idiots. What about he is infecting all the people that board on that plane.

He developed the symptoms yesterday. He left Pakistan on Friday or Saturday. He has been in self-isolation since returning to the UK.

Statement from PCB:

PCB reiterates NO player or support staff has tested positive for COVID-19 to date.

We urge all stakeholders to show responsibility and wait for official confirmations.

Factually incorrect messages will further compound what is already a complex global health and safety matter.

This is exactly the situation PCB was waiting for.

Panic.

Chaos.

Uncertainty.

Getting everyone - broadcasters, players, etc. isolated in hotel rooms and then getting them tested.

Why wait for this situation and react?

Should have let everyone go last week to their homes.

Can’t tell for sure who’s sick.

It sucks PSL is postponed but hey what are you gonna do.

PSL-return Alex Hales in self-isolation due to COVID-19 symptoms

A few days ago, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) gave an option to the overseas players to head back home in the wake of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Karachi Kings’ English recruit, Alex Hales, was one of the cricketers who took up the offer and went back home.

Despite some of the top players heading home, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) went as per schedule. But on Tuesday, hours before the semifinal, an emergency meeting between the franchises and the PCB saw the tournament being postponed indefinitely citing health and safety issues.

The real reason, however, is the fact that on Monday, Hales called up the owners of Karachi Kings and informed that he had shown symptoms similar to that of COVID-19 and had undergone tests.

That triggered a panic among players and staff, eventually leading to the cancellation of the event.

“Alex left four days ago, fearing that there could be a lockdown and then it would be difficult for him to leave. Yesterday, he called up saying that there were symptoms. Now, those symptoms don’t mean, he is positive. As of now, he is in self-isolation and awaiting reports,” Salman Iqbal, the owner of Karachi Kings, told Sportstar on Tuesday.

Soon after the semifinals were called off, all the players and support staff of the franchise underwent tests. “Most of the overseas players will be leaving tonight,” Iqbal said.

He, however, clarified that PSL was not called off just because of the Hales’ episode. “One can’t say that it happened because of Hales. He left four days ago, so he may have got infected even in transit. You never know. I think the tournament was called off at the right time,” Iqbal, a media baron, said.

While the other leagues -- including the IPL -- was suspended due to the fears surrounding the novel COVID-19 outbreak, PSL was the only tournament which went on as a closed-door affair. “We were the only league that was on. PCB has a very strong system and I think, we took the right decision at the right time,” Iqbal said.

After heading home, Hales had put out a tweet saying that he was on self-isolation. However, he later, deleted the tweet.

“The news coming in right now is that maybe Alex Hales is showing symptoms and he is being tested because of which this problem has risen,” former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raza told reporters in Karachi, making it clear that even the commentators for the PSL would undergo tests.

Meanwhile, PCB CEO Wasim Khan, said: “We came to know of an overseas player having a suspected case and when we came to know we took the decision of postponing the league.”

It has been learned that the franchise bosses will meet soon to decide on the future course of action.

Lol IU got kicked out, deal with it

Did this Alex Hales incident cause PSL to be postponed? If true then it’s bad management caused this. Now negative news will impact Pakistan and PSL even more!

Firstly, the PCB only identifies players who have sexually transmitted diseases, if you think back 12 or 13 years.

Sadly, if Hales was symptomatic 24 hours after arriving in the UK, it means he caught it at the PSL.

This is why the tournament should have been cancelled straight away. You have to remember when someone has coronavirus the people they have been in contact with are in danger of catching it. We don't know who the players had been in contact with and if anyone in the stadium had symptoms.

This is why the tournament should have been cancelled straight away rather than a few days later.

He hasn't even been tested positive and people have already blasted the PSL. When Hales left Pak a week ago things weren't even that bad in the country. He also hasn't been mingling with the locals. Let's wait before being ultra negative about Pakistan yet again.

Updated: Tom Curran and Jade Dernbach understood to be on lockdown now also after playing darts with Hales on Saturday. Plus, unrelated, entire Worcestershire squad told to stay at home

This is not PCB or Pakistan's fault. Hales and all the other brits were like 20 times more likely to catch the virus in England. The players were more safe in Pakistan, but they left because the UK was thinking of closing their borders.

Rudy Gobert, a Fernch NBA player, caught the virus in the US. Is anybody blaming the NBA? Is their reputation ruined?

Symptoms normally start to show after 14 days so anyone Alex was in contact with for last two weeks must self quarantine. This can turn ugly really fast.

Average is 4 days until symptoms are seen. It's very unlikely he got it in Pakistan, Pakistan only had like 15 cases when Hales left.

Like New Zealand , Wasn't he supposed to observe 14 days mandatory isolation on his arrival in UK ?

Or this isn't mandatory for UK ?

That's not true... symptoms can appear anywhere between 2-14 days and more and more medical journals are saying that 5-7.5 days is around the average for people to show symptoms.

He started showing symptons in around 24 hours of returning from Pakistan which more or less confirms that if he has got it he got it in Pakistan or at some point on his journey back.

And yoi believe there were only 15 cases? Over 1000 ppl came back from iran. Lets be honest there is no testing going on....

What if he is an outlier and it took him 14 days? Argument just for the sake of argument is stupidity.

Regardless of the average days, The whole team
must be tested and everyone should self quarantine.

It is better to be informed rather than spread fake news.

Those coming from Iran are being quarantined in their respective provinces and then being tested.

Shame on the Pakistani media for not respecting his privacy. Bunch of idiots with Ramiz as their king

Same can be said about England, the cases in England when Hales went back were probably more than the confirmed number. I can only talk with confirmed numbers.

He hasn't even "gotten it" yet. This could just be a cold.

If symptoms = Confirmed Corona, then the majority of us here in Norway have this virus already. People need to calm down.

All the best to the lad.

Can't imagine what he and others are going through.

Well, no.

He left around 5 days ago and the symptoms take around 3-5 days to show.

So he’s probably just gotten a cold due to the cold weather in the UK

Stop spreading misinformation in a time like this. It can sometimes take 2 weeks for it to show up. There is a high chance Alex Hales might have spread it to other team mates. PCB needs to test everyone and anyone who came in contact with him just incase.

Can we just take a step backwards here?

Firstly, the fact that symptoms were present 24 hours after departing from 3 weeks in Pakistan makes it 99.9999% certain that whatever it is, he caught it in Pakistan.

Secondly, young healthy men with Covid-19 symptoms don’t get formally tested in the UK - the test kits are in short supply and are reserved for people who might need hospital treatment, because the treating staff will need to take extra precautions with them.

So this will be treated as a Covid-19 case with home isolation for the player and all his contacts, but he is unlikely to ever be formally tested unless he is treated as a special case.

Lastly, there is a reason why this reflects badly on the PSL. All other serious sports leagues had already ceased activity, but the PSL carried on.

(I suspect that was due to ignorance about how many people had imported the virus from Iran, made worse by low case numbers in Pakistan which were falsely minimised due to a lack of testing, like in Indonesia and the Philippines.)

For the PSL to avoid adverse scrutiny, it needed to get through without any player catching the virus while in Pakistan for the PSL.

But to keep playing after the EPL and NBA and Champions League suspended activity, and then have a foreign player get symptomatic within 24 hours of departure, well that’s not good at all!

He reached UK on Sat morning and developed symptoms on Sunday. Developing symptoms even 24 or 48 hours is not impossible and no one can tell with authority from where he contracted the virus.

NBA player, Arsenal manager etc actually contacted the virus. Both the leagues were going on and only canceled after such incidents and the overall severity of the situation increasing.

NBA had its last match on March 11 while Premier league had its last match on March 9 so its not like it has been weeks since PCB or PSL also did the same.

Anyways I hope hope Hales is fine and he recovers from whatever he is going through soon.

Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Hafeez has urged the public on Tuesday to not circulate rumours about coronavirus amid the global outbreak of the disease and appealed to everyone to follow the precautions.

Taking to his official Twitter handle, Hafeez wrote, “Humble request to all, please stop spreading rumours about #Corona, stop blaming others and follow the precautions and stay safe.”

“What I know is that he (Alex Hales) is yet to have tests but we don’t know whether the symptoms he has is of Corona or not. But we all now need to be very cautious and obviously adopt a common-sense approach to deal with this problem,” Raja had said.

Hales was among the nine foreigners who left Pakistan before the novel Coronavirus had taken a fatal turn in Pakistan. He has reportedly self-isolated himself after returning to England.

Other than the 31-year-old, England cricketers Jason Roy, Tymal Mills, Liam Dawson, Liam Livingstone, Lewis Gregory, James Vince, West Indian Carlos Braithwaite, South African Rilee Roussouw and James Foster (Coach) returned home. Australia batsman Chris Lynn, who was playing for Lahore Qalandars, was the latest cricketer to withdraw midway.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday postponed the ongoing PSL amid the deadly outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus with no announcement of when the competition will return.

The decision came hours before the first semi-final of the tournament between Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi

PCB awaiting COVID-19 test results of around 100 people after suspension of PSL

The Pakistan Cricket Board on Wednesday said around 100 people, including players, associated with the now-suspended Pakistan Super League have undergone COVID-19 tests.

PSL was postponed on Tuesday after the country’s Cricket Board revealed that a foreign player showed symptoms with former captain-turned-commentator Ramiz Raja revealing that it was England’s Alex Hales. Hales later said he has gone into self-isolation due to fever and persistent dry cough after returning home.

“We are expecting the first results later tonight or tomorrow,” a PCB official said.

“Until now no test result has come but we have taken all precautionary steps to ensure the health and safety of players and officials belonging to the semi-finalist teams, umpires, commentators and even PCB officials and production staff members,” he added.

The coronavirus outbreak has so far claimed more than 8000 lives and infected close to 2,00,000 globally.

Given the health crisis, the PCB has announced closure of its offices in Lahore and Karachi until Monday when they would review the situation and take further decisions.

For the time being, the employees have been told to work from home and practice social distancing.

Asked if the foreigners, who were a part of the production staff, had been allowed to return home, the official didn’t give a clear answer, saying it was an ongoing process and the test results were awaited.

The PCB has come under criticism for not postponing the Pakistan Super League earlier but the official said they took all decisions in consultation with the government and health agencies.

“The moment we saw the message from Hales who had returned home last week we acted promptly and followed all protocol to ensure everyone’s safety and well being,” he said.

The PCB, which was forced to hold at least four matches behind closed doors at the National Stadium in Karachi and had similar plan for the semifinals and the final, are yet to assess the exact loss of revenue.

“If we presume there is a full house for one match in Karachi or Lahore plus the sale of hospitality boxes and other commercial deals the loss of revenue for one match played before a empty stadium could be in the range of between 70 to 100 million rupees,” a source in the board said.

“It will cut into our deal with the broadcasters and title sponsors as well,” he added.

This was the first time that the PCB organised the PSL entirely in Pakistan and the matches drew full houses in Multan, Rawalpindi and Lahore plus.

No offence, but the daily situation reports that I’m receiving about this virus do not have any cases of symptoms inside fewer than 5 days of exposure. The exposure - and as I say, the protocol is that he won’t be tested but will be treated as a positive - clearly happened in Pakistan at the PSL.

So the question now is, does Alex Hales have COVID-19, or is it something else? All PSL Players, Staff and commentary team tested negative.
