An amateur cricketer has been left seriously injured with 15 broken bones in his face after a ball struck him between the eyes while he was bowling in the nets.

Alex Tait, a member of Bradford Premier League outfit Lightcliffe Cricket Club, was bowling in the nets when he was struck, fracturing his skull, eye sockets, nose, cheekbones and forehead.

A crowdfunding page has been set up on JustGiving.com with the aim of raising £10,000 to help him cope through what is sure to be a long and painful period of rehabilitation.

England captain Joe Root and Sky Sports cricket commentator David 'Bumble' Lloyd are believed to be just a few of the hundreds of supporters to have donated so far with almost £4,500 being raised in little over 24 hours.

Tait told Pitchero: 'I saw the ball coming back very quickly and the next minute it just struck me on the head hard, very hard. It was an awful feeling and I knew straight away I was in trouble.'

He later told The Sun: 'I am having the operation tomorrow at Bradford Royal Infirmary and there may some loss of vision in my right eye but won’t know till a few weeks after.

'I have played cricket and football all my life as a junior, I have been hit with numerous injuries needing operations but this is the straw that broke the camel's back and I now have to retire from both sports that I love.'

Father to a son and a second child on the way, Tait faces financial difficulty after being told he will not be able to work for several months. Matters are made worse by the fact that he will receive no sick pay as he only recently moved jobs.

Tait was taken straight to hospital following the incident on February 13 and has since been told by doctors that he will require a number of invasive operations from ear to ear.

The extensive restructuring will include inserting metal plates behind the forehead. Depending on how the initial operation goes, a neuro specialist will then assess any long-term damage to his brain and eyes.

The page reads: 'Alex has played at Lightcliffe CC all his life and is a model club man.

'The cricket family is renowned for coming together to support each other and Alex is hopeful cricketers around the country will assist his current position and donate a small amount to allow him to continue living whilst he endures the coming months.'

On the campaign, Tait added: 'I am truly touched by the response from friends, family and the cricket community.'

Have to say one of the worst cricketing injuries I have ever seen with one blow (obviously besides someone dying on the field)

May he recover completely. They are collecting donations if anyone wants to help

Broke my nose in Toronto in 2006 in a similar way. It was smashed into 10 pieces. Thank goodness it was only the nose. Funny thing was I was stepping out of the nets since our practice was over, and this player from Bermuda struck real hard, and straight (which is a stupid thing to do in the nets anyways).
