So Amazon just shortlisted 20 cities for the next HQ, they propose it's gonna create 50k new jobs and add billions to the local economy of whatever city they choose as well as drive up real estate, cost of living, and worsen traffic. What city do you think should be Amazon's next home? I think it should be a southern city, preferably Austin or Dallas. I think that would help turn this state into a blue state with the influx of transplants and migrants and the influence of a corporation like Amazon.

I mean Toronto is the most obvious choice... would be dumb to go to any city in third world USA.

Toronto isn't gonna get it. Amazon is from this "third world USA" you resent and so are over 80% of jobs in Canada.

Yet, Amazon originated from this so-called "Third World USA" and the majority of companies in Canada are from here. 90% of the Canadian population lives within a 100 miles from the US border.

On topic, Raliegh from our state is on the final list. Hope we get it!

Nashville would be a dumb choice considering its laid back nature, but has become very investment friendly offlate.

What surprises me is Texas with all Americans making fun of it,still has atleast two cities in this race ,and has atleast 4 world class cities ,says a lot about business oriented Republicans, wonder if it because its also because its the second most populous state.

On topic:
Think it would Raleigh ,have heard good things about it from literally everyone who has lived there or studied.

I like this guy's choice

Doubt it will be NYC maybe some rundown city in NJ I guess.

Boston might be a nice choice with Harvard and MIT a stone's throw away.

Austin or Atlanta. I seriously hope it's not anywhere in the East coast or out west like Denver

American company's gotta stay in America

Both Tennessee and Texas are no income tax states which is great for people working. To add to that Texas is also a no corporate tax state. So you see a lot of companies moving to Texas. One of the big moves recently was Toyota, they moved their US HQ from California to Texas.

I have a strong suspicion it will be one of the cities in the East Coast "megalopolis," as its now being called: from Boston through the DC Metro.

LA and Denver are too close to the existing HQ. However, Bezos chooses to live in LA, and probably has plenty of relationships with the Powers that Be in LA, which may well influence the decision.

Here in Colorado, we are torn about whether we would like them to choose Denver. While it would help the economy, it would mean even more people moving here, which we don't want.

Yes, hopefully in the East. Maybe Boston, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Newark, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, D.C., Atlanta, Miami, or Indianapolis.

Technically, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis are part of the Great Lakes conurbation, and I would list them together with Toronto, Columbus and Chicago in that megalopolis, not the East Coast one.

So a company is asking cities how much they can bend before it will grace the one which bends the most? What a capitulation by america.

Lol what makes Toronto obvious? You frozen Eskimos are soft as hell.

Toronto has a shot, as do all the other finalists. That's why they are finalists.

With the impending changes to the H1B, which I'm sure Amazon relies on for a chunk of workers, Canada may be a smart move on Amazon's part.

Many H1Bs could live beyond the stipulated six years of the visa if they had an approved I-140 and were simply waiting for the green card. Rumor has it that that may end. If Canadian rules are easier in comparison, Toronto would be an attractive option for Amazon.

Lmao you've been there only 2-3 years and you're already acting as part of Colorado nativist crowd :))

Denver would be a great choice imo and obv great for the city. Oil and gas has seen a decline and the city was moving towards being a tech hub anyway so this would be cherry on top of the mile high cake

Lol. I can think of 50 better US cities than Toronto. It is a complete dump with crumbling infrastructure.

I even have the iconic "Native" bumper sticker... with the fine print:

I meant East of the Mississippi River. Which is recognized as the geographical divider of the U.S.

Maybe that is why Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary are in the top five best cities in the world and there are no cities from third world USA there. :shh

I hope its not NY stay the f away amazon, rent is already too high. Idk why any city would want to take them, they will mostly bring more implants who want to live in gentrified neighborhoods and bring up the cost of everything.

We need that in the South, we need more transplants to change the culture down here.

honestly toronto is a bit of a dump (by western standards)

From canadian cities i would wanna live in Vancouver only. Montreal i havent visited but heard good things from mcgill boys but none of them decided to live there so figure that out.

Its lolworthy that you are doing this trolling on a thread about an American company.

Calgary from what I hear is a really American city with all that suburban sprawl and cowboy culture.

Ah thanks, so its basically US cities apart from Toronto. I thought it would be somewhere exotic and thus deemed newsworthy.

It's newsworthy because it will be a $5 billion investment that will create over 50,000 jobs. Basically it's a lottery ticket for any city. Also, Amazon is well on its way to be the first Trillion dollar company in the world...if this is not newsworthy...not sure what is.

Ah alright. I thought it had a Pakistani/Indian vibe to it as most threads here do.

Vancouver is indeed the most beautiful Canadian city.

Toronto and Montreal are world-class too especially as you extend past the downtown core. Plus, there's the "white Vegas" feel of these cities that attracts people.

When I think of a dump, I think more of Detroit to be honest. That's a complete mess. :murali

Amazon could extend its influence in the Canadian market with a HQ in Toronto but it seems a tad early. They should be looking to clamp down on the American market first.

Lol at all the Canadians on here. :)) Only on PP.

In reality, they got no shot.

I went to Toronto once. Trash city imo.

I've lived a good chunk of time in Montreal since I went to McGill for undergrad.... and the city really puts the axe on her own feet by over emphasis on french. You cannot really rise through the ranks and advance your careers if you do not speak french. Plus pay scales are lower and taxes are higher, but cost of living is considerably cheaper than Toronto or Vancouver. Montreal isn't all that bad Facebook just opened their AI lab there last year. Google is also there. EA Sports also has big presence. Plus Bombardier/RollsRoyce/GE/Pratt&Whitney etc etc.

Well if they wanna avoid paying any form of corporation tax the country is fairly obvious isnt it........

Toronto isn't as good as Canadians make it sound and not as bad as Americans make it sound, although its defn much more multicultural than Chicago(imho), guess only New york is ahead.

The issue with Canadian cities would always be that the will be second fiddle to American ones for various reasons.

IMO Toronto is only behind New York, LA, San Fran, Seattle and maybe Houston. The rest do not compete.

In terms of economy, think Chicago is ahead as well, diff kind of jobs but lot of them and great downtown.

There is the small matter of it being the murder capital of the world.

Those days are gone, it's a pretty cool city, lot of jobs somewhat liberal in nature slightly better weather than Toronto.
I think it has come long way from that, plus what it's given to Stock.market in terms of instruments is remarkable.

Boston, Philly, Atlanta and Miami are on par with, if not, better than Toronto.

id take miami out of the list.

and perhaps philly id put equal or slightly below eventhough i personally love the city

Toronto is better than Htown. I think it's a dope city and has a large brown pop. however I feel like it lacks the character and originality that most American cities have. I'd rate Montreal and Vancouver ahead of TO in that regard.
