Actor Amitabh Bachchan was all set to play a Pakistani protagonist in Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty’s directorial debut. However, deteriorating ties between India and Pakistan ever since the Pulwama attack, appear to have prompted the Bollywood megastar to turn the role down, reported Bollywood Hungama.

According to a report, Pookutty has been discussing the project with the Paa star for two years now and was excited to play the character initially.

“Resul had been discussing the film’s script with Bachchan sahab for two years now. Bachchan Saab loved the peace message in Resul’s Indo-Pak story. Resul waited for his and they were finally supposed to go on the floors. But, when relations worsened between the two countries, Bachchan started having second thoughts,” said a source. The report added that the B-town veteran wouldn’t want to be labelled ‘anti-national’ or embroiled in any controversies.

Yet more evidence..
India has become so extremist that an actor feels he can't play the role of someone from an enemy country...

If you apply this logic, then American or British actors shouldn't play Russian Spies or Islamist Terrorists or even East African pirates.

Probably the right decision, it would take an actor of real conviction to take risks in a country that has been whipped into a nationalistic fervour which thrives on hatred of others rather than pride in self.

India is losing on every front these days :))

Thank you Modi

Agli baar Modi sarkar

:salute

Brilliant stuff from Mr. Bachhan. If likes of Nasiruddin Shah and Amir Khan can be vocal, the other actors have all the right.

But bachhan sahab was not vocal. He quietly chickened out like he always does. He does movies like Pink and after that when someone asked him about the metoo allegations against Nana patekar, This spineless coward said that he isnt nana patekar or tanushree dutta so such a question shouldnt be asked to him. He didnt even condemn the sexual harrassment of actresses. Chicken hearted individual in general who is worried about his image more than anything else.

Its not imperative for everyone to be vocal on every issues. Also with his wife being a MP from rajya sabha...he restrains himself. Mr Bachan may be image concious but he is far from chicken hearted. Likes of Arnab Goswami etc are enough to keep mad anti national actors of bollywood in check. No need for a 80 year old Bachan to be vocal about it.

"Arnab goswami keeps Mad anti national actors in check"

This is probably one of the most irony filled statements ever made on PP.

Sad to see him not feel comfortable with a role portraying a Pakistani, especially since the message was one of peace. I wonder what his mother would have thought, as she was from present day Pakistan, Lailpur(Fasialabad)

He is well within his rights to make such a decision. This is not a big deal.. move on, nothing to see here..

Correct. That Arnab still has some credibility left is worrying.

Well said.

AB was very vocal during UPA days regarding spiraling petrol prices even when the global crude rates were sky rocketing. However during Modi era, petrol prices went to unheard of highs and this man didn't utter a word.

I have a lot of respect for AB, the actor, one of the best ever in business. But he is too much of a coward to voice his opinion on pressing issues. How I wish BW actors grew spine at least half as much HW actors!

He is. But actors are supposed not to be bound by boundaries of nationalities, race or religion. Really disappointed by AB's decision. He'd have been best fit to play this character.

. Safety comes first. It is totally understandable considering how nationalist India has become as a country.

He played it safe. He is a 75 year old man and knows the IQ level of indian public pretty well. :inti

Im not saying its a huge deal, and he has the right to make his own decision. I also have the right to voice my opinion, as everyone else does on here

Throws away the Deewar, Amar, Akbar, Anthony, Sholay and Silsila DVDs in disgust :)

Under declaring your income, stashing money offshore, evading taxes, falsely claiming to be a farmer just so you could accept some prime land which was gifted to you by the then UP state government (you were friends with the Chief Minister) isn't anti national yet playing a Pakistani in some movie or drama is??

This was to be expected. In reality AB is a Hindu extremist despite the peaceful image he shows. During the 1984 anti-Sikh riots he was encouraging attacks on them telling the Hindu's to do this and that to those who wear turbans. Imran Khan at his peak also rejected many roles offered to him by Bollywood as he did not feel comfortable, his Mother also forbid him to work in India. Amir Khan the Bollywood actor offered our Shaan Shahid the villains role for the movie "Ghajini", Shaan accepted only if Amir agreed to play a similar negative role in a Pakistani movie:14: Top stars are under a lot of pressure from the public to do the patriot thing.

He is Mr Panama just like Nawaz Sharif. Nasurddin Shah and Aamir Khan aren't tax evaders. At least these two actors have never asked people to murder Sikhs(1984).

Nothing wrong in what he did.

Smart guy.

Its not worth it and rightly so.

It's not worth the backlash?

I think it's more of a case of this actor also having an extremist mindset.

It says that he was all set to play the role but this recent conflict means he won't. So him having an extremist mindset doesn't make sense.

It could be an excuse. As mentioned above he has history of Hindu extremism.

A lot of Pakistanis are obsessed with Bollywood so will find it hard to criticise such actors even if they are anti Pakistan. Their entertainment comes before pride and country.

I don't even watch bollywood so that doesn't apply to me. I was just commenting on the article and what it says. But you probably know more.

I wasn't referring to you but in general. Also Bachan was in a happy photo with Netanyahu who is nothing short of a evil manian butcher. Extremist minds usually flock together.

A lot of Indians support Israel so not surprising. But i don't get why indians support Israel in the first place. What's the connection between the two countries?

Stop lying. Amir's exact words were "Kiran and I dont feel safe in India and contemplating of livimg outside India"

So no one asked Amir to leave India but he himself wanted to. Not sure why didnt he leave yet...shamlessly still living in India.

Amitabh probably seen those videos of people barging into homes and beating muslims and telling them to go to Pakistan. Heck even when India loses to Pakistan in cricket the security has to be beefed up at Indian players homes. Nowadays you never what these lunatics will do. It's best for these actors/actresses to only talk rubbish about Pakistan or not talk at all as their lives could be in danger.

Don't want an 80 year old hasbeen playing a Pakistani character anyways

Both have history with the Swastika, both are oppressors, both have fascist governments in power, and both share a common enemy - Islam.

Lol what a joker. He wanted to live outside India because he and his wife were not feeling safe in India but some jaahils asked him to go to Pakistan. Now tell me where did Aamir say that he wanted to move to Pakistan?

He is not shameless, shameless are actually those who are sitting outside India and are questioning the patriotism of Indians living in India. Aamir loves India but people like you have settled abroad because you were feeling unsafe in India. I suggest you should first start living in India then open your big mouth and preach others. :inti

"Even Now Questions Being Raised On Civil Liberties": Amitabh Bachchan

The silver screen increasingly becoming a battleground of disparate political ideologies, Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan dwelt at length over British censorship, pre-Independence films against oppressors, communalism and social unity at the inauguration of Kolkata's International film fest today.

Then the 80-year-old, known to steer clear of controversies, made a rare comment on the politically sensitive issue of civil liberties and freedom of expression.

"Even now, and I'm sure my colleagues on stage would agree questions are being raised on civil liberties and freedom of expression," Mr Bachchan said.

Sharing the dais with him was Shah Rukh Khan, who movie "Pathaan" has become the latest target of the 'boycott club'.

In his address, Mr Khan had sent out a message of positivity. On the toxic culture of social media, he said it is "driven by a certain narrowness of view that limits human nature to its baser self".

"I read somewhere that negativity increases social media consumption and thereby increases its commercial value as well. Such pursuits enclose the collective narrative, making it divisive and destructive"

"We are all happy and I am the happiest. And I have no qualms in saying, that no matter what the world does, me and you, and all positive people in the world are alive," he had added.

Mr Bachchan had hailed his speech, saying, "I salute your artistic temperament that embraces plurality and equality".

The film fest in Kolkata – known to be a city of enthusiastic cine-goers -- has started in the wake of the controversy over "The Kashmir files" that overshadowed the International Film Festival at Goa.

Israeli film-maker Nadav Lapid, who was part of the jury, said the jury felt the "The Kashmir Files" was a "vulgar movie" and channelled "propaganda". His comments were slammed from all quarters, including Israeli envoy to India Naor Gilon.

He eventually was backed up by the jury, who said the entire jury knew of and agreed with what Mr Lapid said about the movie.

India is going through what pakistan went through Under General Zia in the 80s. The results will be even worse than pakistan I think and will be felt for over decades to come.Nationalism and brining religion into public sphere is a disaster . be it India pakistan, Israel........

How much money was involved or how prestigious was the project that Amitabh turned down? That would be a good benchmark to measure his nationalism.

Don't want an 80 year old hasbeen playing a Pakistani character anyways

Er no.. even his latest movie Goodbye(low budget) he was excellent, no young actors are able to hold a candle to his versatility.
