Amla vs Anderson - Is this the biggest example of superiority over an individual opponent?

amla is a legend. anderson is an average bowler. this stat is not surprising.

Definitely one of big examples although there is not much of a difference in their legacy as a cricketer.

Anderson is the worst bowler in the 400+ wicket club. Perfect example of a home track bully.

Agreed both are country greats and nothing more. It also shows how good a player Amla is versus lateral movement.

Anderson is a club level bowler when up against Amla

May be, but not sure. Zaheer's stat against few Indian spinners need to be checked this way. Similarly, Sehwag against Saq.

Zaheer averages in 20s in India and 150+ in Pakistan when playing against Indians. I doubt that he will make it unless only home venue is counted or certain spinners only played against him in Pakistan.

I didn't really see him bat, but why such a huge difference in his performance in India and in Pakistan against same set of bowlers? Yah, umpiring bias both ways will account for some margin here, but I was surprised to see such a huge difference.

In 12 innings in India he scored 313 runs.

In 13 innings in Pakistan against India he scored 1427 runs.

Just curious how you go about checking one batsman against one bowler? Anyone has easy way to do it?

James Overratedson is the ultimate home track
bully. Although 25 still isn't a world class average.

It'll count for some spinners, because bowlers changed. I think, Bedi & Prassanna had nightmares against him in 1978 & they retired there after - it was Dulip Doshi in 1979 that troubled him, but he was out of Indian team by 1982. Maninder traveled both times in 1982 & 1984 (series ended after 1st Test, due to assassination of Mrs. Ghandhi - Z probably scored a double in only Test), and got Zaheer out may be once (so that he has an average).

Zed was a confidence player - wonderful entertainer when in full flow, but surprisingly inept, when under pressure. Think about a mixture of Williamson through off side & Kohli through on side. I don't think, in the history of the game, anyone played classical drives more elegantly than Zaheer, particularly against spinners - it's was like a golf swing, starting way above right shoulder, finishing on left.

Anderson was recently asked in an interview about who he found hard to bowl at. He named ponting & amla as the two most challenging batsmen he has faced.

In contrast Broad is the most successful bowler against Amla ever in Test cricket, with 8 dismissals.

Hafeez-Steyn ?

I vividly remember how once after dismissing Hafeez, Steyn didn't even celebrate and laughed at him as Hafeez passed him by.

Nothing can beat this. What a dominance.

Arguably, the greatest opening bowler of our times vs the most pathetic opener to play as many tests.

Sanga/Trott vs Ajmal

Chanderpaul/Younis vs Harbhajan

All four would be averaging 100+

Asif against Bell or Kp
Ajmal against Strauss
Akhtar against Trescothik

Hashim Emlas bounced back well after first test

Can Ajmal be counted in a thread like this?

why not? brilliant bowler in all formats. his action was cleared twice in 09 and 2012. not his fault the rules changed in 2014. the amount of hate he gets because of no fault of his is ridiculous

He didn't dominate him at all. Got him out a lot but in the occasions he wasn;t able to Lara punished him and scored amazing hundreds. 50/50 battle.

No where near close, McGrath dominated Lara. 15 times he dismissed him, 10 times for less than 10.

Yes, and Lara scored 6 hundreds against him, 2 of them huge double hundreds. Including two of the greatest match winning innings back to back (213 and 153* in 1999 series).

213 dropped by M Waugh on 44 off McGrath, 153 dropped by Miller off McGrath very early on.

I have to check some clips then. He has a reputation of dominating spinners, but I didn't see many clips of him.

Dominating Anderson being a Top order batsman is very rare. I am quite sure that's the best record for any batsman against Anderson.

Anderson has a particularly strong record against Tendulkar I believe.

Good to see you agree with me for once.

The vast majority of big innings could theoretically be discredited on the basis of a dropped catch. Or a missed stumping. Or a plumb LBW / caught behind not given by the umpire. Or a missed run-out opportunity.

If you are going to discredit some otherwise fantastic performances on the basis of a chance being given, you will hardly have any tons left for any player.

Leo23 one of the reasons Ajmal gets extra hate is he claimed that he had to bowl with a bent arm because of a car accident he had and thats why he chucked but as soon as the ICC banned him. Within a year he had a totally remodelled action that fell within the ICC boundaries easily.

Placed a lot of suspicion on Ajmal on how sincere his earlier claims were.
