An all-pace attack on Pakistan pitches - has it ever worked?

I have to admit that I was very excited when I first heard about the "all pace attack" thingy from Pakistan for the 1st Test vs Bangladesh.

But there was a part of me, the old guy who's watched Pakistan cricket since the '70s which told me to hold my horses.

An all-pace attack on Pakistani pitches?

I do not recall it ever working and seems it won't work again.

I don't know what Jason Gillespie was told by our pitch-professors but I do not think he will trust anyone again!

Jason Gillespi is preparing this team to go to war in SENA. This is just practice for him. Even if Pakistan fails to win this test, it it will prepare them for the bigger battles that await them.

Remember what Bharatiya pace quartet did down under. Jason has this in his mind.

They thought that rain and gree color of the pitch was gonna make it work but here in Pakistan, it will always be a phatta wicket in the end.

This pindi pitch fooled everyone.

Poor pitches. I miss the UAE pitches; you always knew there was a chance for a comeback.

As Muhtaq Ahmed said, we always need a specialist spinner in Test cricket to attack from another end. And now we can see it how badly we are missing a specialist spinner against Bangladesh in 1st Test in Rawalpindi

I was literally shocked when it was announced that Pak will go with all pace attack. Dropping your specialist spinner at a pitch like Pindi despite knowing very well that fast bowlers are toothless was a big blunder. Such ludicrous decisions neither helps fast bowlers nor spinners, in fact somebody like Abrar will feel demotivated as he is not allowed to play in home conditions and also considering he has been out of the team since many series. He didn't played Australia test series and he was out of 2023 WC because of injury

Theirs a saying, Adding food coloring does not make the food taste better.

Hence telling the world "Hey look pur pitch is so green" does not make the pitch better.

Why? He didn't played Abrar. Moreover said he considers Salman a specialist spinner.

He was given the wrong inputs about the pitch, or maybe he asked for a pacer friendly pitch and trusted the groundsmen etc

Quiet clear he won't do it again.

I don’t think he should have relied on the groundsmen on the pitch inputs (which in itself is a travesty), but just how you did, look at the history of playing with an all pace attack and learn from it.
In the end, you can have all grass on a pitch, but with sun beating down, the rough surface underneath, and most importantly the nature of the soil itself not changing, it will not support pace bowling through the full game. I’m sure he has a lot more access to historical data than you do, yet you called it and he didn’t. A missed opportunity in my opinion.

An all-pace attack on roads is the worst sight in any form of cricket.

Bowling machines and nets are more watchable.

PCT mangement and pitch curators were prepared for green pitch but pitch became a road by mistake.

Leaving grass on the wicket alone doesn't make it competitive... they should also make it harder so that bowlers can get some bounce out of it.

Now this Test is surely going to end in a draw on this dead rubber.

Make more phatta wickets PCB.

This stat illustrates the delusion of Pakistan think tank. Why do they rate their own fast bowling? What was the need of 4 fast bowlers with this kind of stat? Sure they picked a few wickets. Some of them were gifted

We have a separate thread for this topic.

Bangladesh on the same pitch where Pak were bowling.

The question is - has it ever been attempted?

Even in Imran’s latter days, he (rightly) was proud of his fast bowling strength, but he still picked Qadir / tauseef / Akram Raza, Mushie

You better be rolling in with Wasim, Waqar, Imran, and Akhtar if you want to go with an all-pace attack in Pakistan. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense even if it's a green wicket.

The pitch is a road but a specialist spinner would have offered more control to keep the fast bowlers energized. The part-timers have no chance on a pitch like this.

Imran famously had the curators prepare slow spinning wickets to neutralise WI quicks in the 80's.

You can possibly get a result if there is massive reverse swing but that doesn't happen nowadays.

It might work in Australia but not here. Even in Australia, you need a specialist spinner and here in Pakistan, they went on to play without any. LOL

Everything should work against a team of Bangladesh's caliber. Sadly the Pacers here are a bunch of harmless T20 trundlers.

Even fans were always talking about 4 seamers in ODIs. Remember the match against India. Before the match they wanted 5 fast bowlers. Pakistan fans will have to re-calibrate their mind set. There is no Waqar/Akram/Akhtar bowling anymore.

Shan Masood speaking during the post-match presser:

“When you are playing 3 fast bowlers in this weather, that’s a lot of workload on them. If the spinner plays, it means he is bowling 30 overs, so the 4th fast bowler was chosen based on the conditions and the extreme weather to help share the load.”

“Naseem Shah hadn’t played Test cricket for a while, and Shaheen Afridi also hadn’t played Test cricket for a while. Pakistan as a team had not played for 10 months. If we played 3 fast bowlers and lost one to injury, we could’ve been like, ‘Why didn’t we play a 4th pacer?’ Obviously, there was a setback before the series when we lost Aamer Jamal, who helped us both with bat and ball. You can always fit the spinner in, but you have to look at the full balance of the side. We hope for 6 to 7 batters who can bat properly and then play 4 frontline bowlers with a little bit of help here and there. We thought that Saim Ayub could chip in with a few overs. Salman Ali Agha bowled really well in Australia, so there was a lot of thinking involved.”

Will this pitch be any better than the one in the 1st Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan?
