Apologies to Pakpassion readers but originally I forgot the great Denis Compton. This is the corrected version .
This is my revised piece replacing Per May with Compton
All-time English test xi
1.Jack Hobbs
2.Len Hutton
3.Walter Hammond
4.Denis Compton
5.W.G Grace
6.Ian Botham
7.Alan Knott
8.Harold Larwood
9.Fred Trueman
10.Jim Laker
11.Sydney Barnes
12th man Alec Bedser
Hobbs arguably the best of all batsmen considering his longevity and mastery on wet tracks.Hutton ,arguably technically the best of all batsmen.Hammond could have been the 2nd best batsmen to Bradman,in the league of Viv,Tendulkar or Lara and also a more than competent bowler.Compton was the equivalent of a musical composer like Beethoven to batting who could create strokes from his own book .His sheer genius could win games.Grace was arguably the best cricketer ever making the impact of an emperor .No cricketer was so supreme in an era.At his best Botham was next only to Sobers as an all-rounder and could turn games more than nay cricketer.Knott was as good as any keeper and a competent bat.Larwood was a teror with the bal at his fastest.Truemna was close to the prefect fast bowler with a record on par with Lillee or Marshall.Laker could mesmerise batsmen with his spin.Barnes was arguably the best of all bowlers and statistically in another league.Arguably no bower ever had such mastery over length or could produce such unplayable cutting deliveries.
Hobbs and Hutton would lay the perfect foundation like architects.Hammond,Grace and Botham would pulverize bowling attacks.Compton's artistry and genius would bemuse the best of bowlers tricking them like a magician. The genuine pace of Trueman and Larwood would be backed by the great fast-medium of Botham ,the unplayable combined medium pace spin of Barnes and the effective medium pace of Hammond.3 all-rounders in Botham,Grace and Hammond who would all be match-winners.
Post -war English test xi
1.Hutton
2.Gooch
3.May
4.Pieterson
5.Dexter
6.Botham
7.Flintoff
8.Knott
9.Trueman
10.Laker
11.Willis
12th man Colin Cowdrey
Gooch played pace arguably better than any opening batsmen after the war.Pieterson was also a master against sheer pace and a match-winner.May was an epitome of batting perfection being almost as complete as any all-time great.Dexter was the ultimatum man in a crisis and an attacking batsmen in the Sobers mould.Flintoff had the influence of Ian Botham in his generation.Willis could conjure up pace like even Andy Roberts and his best and his attacking agression could win many a match.
Barrington and Cowdrey missed out by a nose as Pieterson had more match-winning prowess. They may well have made it on pre merit.I preferred having 5-6 bowlers.Dexter could also chip in with the ball and so could Gooch.
