What's new

An Indian national football team beats corresponding Italian national football team in a friendly

our under 17 players are really good.
we can see india qualifying for world cup in 2026

Wow that's a huge achievement even if it's a friendly beating U-17 Italians means we are going in the right direction..

Congrats to the u17 boys

Will football ever match, or surpass cricket in India ? Or is cricket too ingrained into the fabric of Indian culture by now for that to ever happen ?

it doesnt need to

and they can still become a quality team without this happening

remember india has football as the most popular sport in a handful of regions currently and these regions together have multiple times the population of any European country

good result but i doubt much will come off this.

u-17 level players very rarely go onto the very top and most just fall by the wayside so lets say in 10 years very few of these italy u17 players will be playing top level Serie A even.

However regardless its something to build on?

I remember a few years ago there was a lot of hype about an Indian football league with some foreign stars (I-league or isl??? - not sure). Any youngsters who have broken into national team through that

It may match or surpass only if

1) India becomes a regular qualifier in FIFA World Cups and makes it to the Quarters or Semis regularly.
2) India has a high quality Football League with homegrown talent and best foreign players playing in it to sustain the interest of the Nation for 8-10 months.
3) Indian Cricket team falls to the standards of West Indies and IPL flops.

It's ISL very good concept there are few young players who benefitted from ISL I don't remember names on top of my head now someone else might confirm.. ISL impact improved our older players as well when you get to play with the likes of Del piero or roberto Carlos or pires etc just by sharing time with them improves you as a player..

Ofcourse a lot of U17 players will fizzle away but to see our U17 team compete with the best U17 teams of the world means we are producing good enough talent at school level.. Now next step is to harness this talent and convert it into professionals.. We don't have to be a top footballing nation but I would settle for a competitive Asian nation in next 10 years and if possible in next 20-25 a competitive team at global level..

It's very unlikely but it's not impossible to achieve the above..

Can't surpass cricket atleast in next 30-40 years.. There are some city kids who already follow EPL or La Liga like they live in Spain or England over the next 30-40 years you will see a lot more people like that but to surpass cricket you need a team which can compete at international level and a proper Indian league with top stars like what Chinese are doing..

Good result but still long way to go,with a combined ISL next year and introduction of Bangalore finally we will have a unified football league and proper system, hopefully in 10 years we produce good results.

Very impressive, they should build these guys up, send them overseas every now and then to get gigs even playing lower league level football would do the development wonders and then integrate them into the national team. That IPL style football thingy is a good initiative to, learning from the experienced veterans would benefit the local talent a great deal

Was it the actual Italy U17 national team or just some Italian teenagers brought together for a random friendly match no one cares about.

This year's FIFA under 17 wc will take place in India.

They probably want some interest for the U17 WC in India. Won't read too much into it.

The Under 17 WC is being held in India later this year so could be a publicity stunt to generate the hype around the Indian team.

Political result.

Assuming the Italian team which played was not some crappy school level team but a strong team with players who will play in upcoming WC..

If the above is true then you believe FIFA or Broadcasters bribed 17 year old kids to under perform so Indian team can be hyped for WC?

Teams and players are often told to go easy in friendlies.

In an U-17 match? Surely that's not the right way to coach kids telling them you don't have to perform 100% in a match? I can understand in normal friendlies but in U-17 it would be preposterous to suggest to kids not to give their 100%..

Good for India. The thing is the Italian kids after graduating from the u17 system will be trained to be world-class defenders (because all Italians are basically defenders) while the Indian kids will have to be nurtured in a sub-standard structure which is rife with corruption, nepotism and lack of technical competency with regards to football coaching.

Hope we can regain lost glory in football. We are never going to be world beaters in this sport but hopefully one day we at least become a competent side that can hold its own against the big boys and go deep in Asia Cup.

Italians didn't qualify for the world cup, so maybe they are not that big a deal, and it could be that you are right. Anyway, the story has only added to the hope, so I'll stop finding faults with the win.

Just need to carry on with this setup. Someday they will make it to the big stage

Ahh that explains stuff probably not the best team in the world.. Surprising seeing so many people here downplaying the result and saying Italians were bribed to capture Indian market? Bribing 15 year olds can FIFA go that low or is it just the usual biased posters here trying to make it look like India can't beat Italy?

Surely we should demand money according to our population from FIFA now to help us build the infrastructure for football in India. :moyo

It's a good result for India but the level of competition rises significantly from U17 to senior level. Im sure Italy also gave their lesser plays a go in this match.

FIFA are expanding the number of teams in the World Cup so there is a chance but India is still way behind other nations in the region, so I doubt they will qualify.

We have some great African players playing in the worlds best leagues but no African team has ever reached the World Cup final as of yet. Pele stated many years ago, an African team would win the World Cup by the year 2000 but they are a still a way off. England is arguably the greatest football nation but we struggle to get past the first round lol.

Listen to opening lines

"I think it's bad news for the english game, we're not creative enough and we're not positive enough" :))) applies to the cricket team at world cups as well.

This is my version of the three lions football song but in tribute of the England cricket at ICC World Cups :yk :

Commentary: (We're not creative enough and we're not positive enough)

Cricket's COMING HOME! Its COMING HOME! Its COMING HOME! Its COMING!

Everyone seems to know the score, they've seen it all before
They just know, they're so sure
That England's gonna throw it away, gonna blow it away
But I know they can play,
'Cause I remember

Three lions on a shirt
Aussies are still gleaming
40 years of hurt
Never stopped me dreaming

So many jokes, so many sneers
But all those "oh so near's"
Wear you down, through the years
But I still see that choke against Bangladesh
And when our bowlers did not score, Dilshan belting the ball
And Nobody dancing

Three lions on a shirt
Aussies still gleaming at us
40 years of hurt
Never stopped me dreaming

^ Give this man a Grammy ! lol

Indian version.

Three Cattle on a shirt.
In 1950 we wore no football boots but our feet didn't hurt.

:))) :))) at all the tall claims of going in the right direction. Just goes to show easily some folks are fooled by their media.

The Indians won against a Team of Tier 3 and Tier 4 players and the Indian Football board claims victory against the Best U-17 International side.

The ItalianU-17 Side doesn't even consider the Indian team a worthy opponent hence fielded Tier 3 and Tier 4 players to even up the battle.

Did India U17 Really Beat Italy U17? AIFF's Faux Pas Revealed

In what was supposed to be a historic occasion and a "new chapter in Indian Football" might actually turn out to be one of Indian football's most embarrassing moment.

AIFF had claimed that India U17 team had beaten the Italian U17 team 2-0. But now details are emerging that the opponents were not the Italian national team, but a team made up of third and fourth division Italian players, called Lega Pro and Lega Pro 2 respectively. The official websites of Lega Pro, and Lega Pro clubs - Parma and Albinoleffe - revealed that the team playing India was a representative side of the league.

In fact, the Italian national team last played a match on May 9 against Turkey in the U17 European Championship. They haven't qualified for the FIFA U17 World Cup which will be held in the country later this year.

In fact, if we compare the two teams, none of the players that featured in the U17 European Championship played in the team that was beaten by India.

Here is the team that faced India,

Federico Brancolini – Modena, Edoardo Corvi – Parma, Francesco Micheli – Albinoleffe, Simone Della Morte – Lucchese, Davide Missaglia – Cremonese, Marco Ruggero – Padova, Antonio Vitale – Modena, Nicolo Maffini – Carrarese, Alessio Gianneschi - Robur Siena, Antonio Marrone - Juve Stabia, Matteo Bertollo - Bassano Virtus, Michael Fibiano - Juve Stabia, Alberto Maroni – Mantova, Alessandro Ramello – Alessandria, Alessandro Galeandro – Albinoleffe, Davide Rosso – Padova, Davide Rodolfi – Albinoleffe, Alessandro Davitti – Modena.

While the Italian team which turned out in the U17 European Championship was as follow,

Simone Ghidotti – Fiorentina, Marco Carnesecchi – Cesena, Raoul Bellanova – AC Milan, Antonio Candela – Spezia, Matteo Anzolin – Vicenza, Davide Bettella - Inter Milan, Alex Campeol - AC Milan, Gabriele Bellodi – AC Milan, Andrea Rizzo Pinna – Atalanta, Elia Visconti – Inter Milan, Fabrizio Caligara – Juventus, Roberto Biancu – Cagliari, Hans Nicolussi Caviglia – Juventus, Emanuel Vignato – Chievo, Manolo Portanova – Lazio, Moise Kean – Juventus, Davide Merola – Inter Milan, Pietro Pellegri – Genoa.

The team that lost to India was coached by Daniele Arrigoni whereas the head coach of the Italy U-17 team is Emiliano Bigica.

“All along, it is the Italian football federation who approved the team which was fielded on Friday . The team played with the Italian national team jerseys and there is nothing on record to suggest that this was not the national team.

“If Italy chose to field a team which is supposedly not its main team, how are we to blame? There is no doubt that the team represented Italy,“ a AIFF official was quoted as saying by Times of India.

The game finds no mentions on the official Italian Football Federation website.

India will face the same side again on May 23, as per the official website of third-tier club Albinoleffe.

India's performance in the exposure trip has not been up to the standard, with the team not able to register even a single win in the seven matches played against club sides from Portugal so far. India lost five and drew two (against Benfica and Saint Leu).

Thread title should be changed to 'An indian national football team beats corresponding Tier 4 Italian football team in a friendly match'

Should have been obvious all long. On a brighter side, U17 WC in India has sure gotten some much needed publicity.

Hahahahaha :)) :))

Man oh Man  - Is nationalistic chest thumping like a thing in India or what ??????

Lol, this is nothing, if anything, most Indian fans were quite realistic. Compare this to Pakistani chest-thumping having won a mohalla arm-wrestling match held in Lahore. :))

Failed comprehension and logic at your end I am afraid.......

People aren't laughing on the event that was being held, kudos to India for beating an U-17 team from Italy, however the hilarious bit is that Indian media pictured it as if India defeated the NATIONAL U-17 team from Italy.

Read the above few reports, it was like the fourth tier U-17 team and that too from a low end league...... The arm wrestling match you pointed at were competed between two opponents who all were from the same tier......

Lol this thread turned out to be quite anti climactic.. Anyways still good exposure for the young kids
