It was said that these 2 were the future of Pakistan at one point.

In Umar Akmal we had a pocket-rocket who would take on the best bowling attacks and put them to the sword.

Ahmed Shehzad was the man we needed at the top of the innings where we had struggled for so long.

And so it came to pass in the 2nd T20I against a depleted Sri Lanka side that both players ended their international careers in ignominy.

Or so the story will be told - or will it?

Umar akmal career will finish eariler than ahmed shehzad due to his attitude and fitness problem .

Ahmed is also not helping himself. Imam ,abid, fakhar have done enough than him while in test shan, imam and abid is also occupying test squad

Their careers will never end

I guarantee... absolutely guarantee that both will play for Pakistan again

I hope this is the end of it.

I was a supported of both young men, promising across formats with an abundance of talent which led to eye catching strokeplay and yet, neither man lived up to his promise. Akmal's fitness and attitude fell apart at the seams so I lost interest in him pretty quickly.

Shehzad is the anomaly here, he is always maintained fitness and does not have the disciplinary record that Akmal has. I felt that he was mistreated in ODIs for too long and too much was expected to soon. Sadly he was in and out of the side at a time when he should have been persisted with...and now he is in the side when he should not be persisted with.

A sad end but it just goes to show this sport is hard.

I thought their careers finished well before this series.
Still better late than never

No chance- they will be around for years to come. They will make many comebacks and fail just as many times.

J have been hearing this since I joined this forum.I do not know what forces our management to select these two useless players;these two may have support from some powerful quarters.
Regarding Ahmad Shahzad,he is one the most technically-inept batsman of our team, but we have hyped him as if he were Tendulkar.Even,an average cricket follower can observe that Ahmad is extremely limited.
I hope that this series ends the careers of both players, who have been hyped like no tomorrow by their fans.

A truckload of lies here.

1) Shehzad got an insanely long rope for ODIs. He virtually was an everpresent for 3-4 years and would be picked regardless of performance despite averaging mid 30s at low 70s strike rate. His spot was guaranteed for many years despite playing a brand of cricket 25 years behind.

2) He HAS had a poor disciplinary record going back to his Under 19 days. When Azhar Ali was appointed captain he was actively against that appointment to the point it was shameful. This lafanga or shoda (whatever your want to call him) is a cancer and was more interested in clicking selfies with Afridi than making runs.

Shehzad is as limited as a top order batsman can come. Limited shot selection, inability to find gaps, lacks temperament and has no gear. In pure skills, Umar Akmal is on another planet to him btw. Umar atleast has shots and intent. But obv he is an idiot himself and has had more than enough chances.

Mediocre players, both. They went down in a manner befitting their lack of caliber - failing to pick the wrong ones from Wanindu. Their demise has at least heralded the coming of a young star from SL.

with these two I wish that the career of Faheem ashraf could come to an end here as well :)

Lol what?! Shehzad got an unbelievably long and undeserved run in the team and yet he showed no signs of improving. What are you talking about?

People still see them as little kids and its more to do with their looks and cricketing iq.

Exactly under afridi's wings shehzad played like 4 WC (ODI + T20) and failed in all of them, didnt have any performance to speak about... Not the right player to invest in.... But just had that run because of Afridi and now starting with Misbah....

lol yea he averages sth like 12 in ICC tournaments

Ahmed Shehzad has been an almost mirror image of his domestic career at International level. But when you look at Umar Akmal, he wasted himself, he never became what he was potentially in the start of his career. If I remember correctly Umar Akmal, during his starting years, averaged above 50 in FC cricket and above 40 in List-A cricket.

... said the naive fan for the 400th time

I don't look forward to having this discussion again in 2021

Masterstroke by Misbah :misbah

yeah, real masterstroke bringing them in for 2 games over more more qualified player when virtually everyone is in the country knew of the impeding disaster

Pakistan would've won the series if we had Abid Ali and Haris Sohail instead in the first 2 matches

Umar Akmal's case is surprising because normally batsmen are suppossed to get better with more confidence and experience but he has become a tail ender now. The Mohd Sami of batting

Thats because Misbah keeps strangling all of their natural talent.

Play Shehzad under a different coach he'd make ABDV and Gayle look like Dravid with his skills.

And Umar just needs another chance to mature. Natural talent. BCCI paid off the PCB chef to supply loads of biryani to him for years.

This.....very good analysis. Shahzed was never tenth of a player umar akmal was. But shehzad cultivated his persona as a kohli look alike, even though he batted like mark richardson. His run ins with discipline are as old as 2010-11. Akmal had talent but his personality, just like his game, never matured.

No, they will be back again after some time. We can't get rid of them unless they announce their retirements.

End of an era.

They should just play T20 leagues around the globe and earn money for their children.

lolol joke of the day if you assume they will be in high demand in global T20 leagues these days.

Umar Akmal still used to be a big draw in these leagues till a few years ago (BPL,CPL, english t20 etc) atleaast

They always get their way in some small leagues like the BPL, Aghan league, Kenya league (where Asif went) etc.

They will be rested for Australia series and brought after right after the disaster in the name of Inclusion of young new players.

Trust me they will be in the Australia tests as they 'need to be given a chance and experiments must be made' to find the right combination.

I totally object to the idea of ending a white ball career due to red ball performance, or vice versa.

It shows a lack of rigour and comprehension about two totally different formats.

You’d end a batsman’s Test career due to T20 failures? That’s just madness.

Its the mental aspect of it. No one wants to see these names in a Pakistan squad list again - and that's fact.

Have you forgotten Duanne “Mediocre” Olivier bouncing out Azhar et al at will?

Umar Akmal tamed Shane Bond and Mitchell Johnson. Apart from Babar Azam he is the only Pakistan batsman equipped to succeed overseas against unlimited bouncers and a slip cordon.

I preferred Inzimam as Chief Selector because atleast he was able to keep the TTF's out of the team. With Misbah at the elm, it wouldnt surprise me to see Salman Butt make a return

I´ll distribute sweets in my town the day this is officially confirmed, and we all know that that day is never coming.

No chance. They'll be in and out like the hokey cokey

And with them should go Misbah and Waqar immediately. No time for giving them time and series to prove themselves, out right now.

Unless they do the fans on this forum and Pakistan cricket in general a huge favour by retiring from limited overs international cricket, they will continue to be selected. Both are good enough to be in the leading run scorers for PSL and will go on a run of good form in the domestic circuit. And then they have the media moguls who continue to pressurise the PCB in selecting them.

Its been a decade since that happened.

Umar is clearly not the same player.

You should understand that by now.

He is done, he has zero confidence. His batting has regressed. If he had double digit iq maybe he wouldve done better.

Don’t underestimate the foolishness of Pakistani selectors. They’ll keep bringing them into the side until both of them are well into their 40s.

I remember thinking the same about Hafeez a decade ago after a horrible series in SA I think it was, that finally they will realise after this tour that Hafeez does not have what it takes as a batsman to a score runs against top teams like Aus and SA —but clearly I was wrong and the selectors were right given Hafeez was assured of his place and went on to score piles of runs with big 100s/200s against Aus and SA in the next decade and here we are in 2019 and he’s widely recognised as a batting great for Pakistan.

Maybe the same will happen with Shezad and Akmal, let’s wait for another decade and witness their 100s and double centuries too.

The sad thing is we are clearly not producing decent international calibre batsmen , hence we will have to see them again and again when they score runs in domestic competitions. I seriously hope Umair Bin Yousuf , Haider Ali ,Saud Shakil and co. get better performances in this season.

They will be back. Can't get rid of once in a lifetime talents, just like that on the basis of 2 inconsequential T-20 mickey mouse games.

So both at the crease again today....doing fairly well.

Agreed, he also has a fat belly. Umar should stick to domestics whilst considering a career as a security guard or Uber driver.

Pakistan missed a trick by not playing them for 3rd T20i. They both were under tremendous pressure and need few games to prove their worth. When they are not under any pressure eg ongoing domestic games you can see their "talent"

Misbah should sit with them and tell them they have 20 more games to play non stop and if they fail they will get 20 more games next year. But that will be it for 1-2 years before they are recalled. Misbah needs to have this tough talk with the duo.

Never say never. Both have good 15-20 years (as per the Misbah-ul-Haq old is gold theory) of their careers left. Enough time to make comebacks.

Technically they have been “treated unfairly”. Called back for only 2 games and not given a “consistent run” on comeback. Their “batting positions” kept changing. All ingredients are there for media rants

They're like boomerangs. You throw them away, they'll always come back!

:shezzy2 and :uakmal are our best batman\fielder. We should back them up, as PCB expects, even when they continue to fail over and over again since the last decade. I think we are fighting to the get into the qualifiers for the future World Cups. Good strategy PCB.

These two are match winners on their day against any bowling attack. A big tournament like the WT20 needs to see the likes of Umar akmal and shehzad light up the tournament and show the other teams it's rightfully place at the bottom of the tree

Credit where due - they keep on performing in domestic!

Ahmed Shehzad 55, Umar Akmal 52 today in Round 6 of QEA

They deserve no credit for domestic performances. It’s easy for players who have had international exposure to perform well in domestics. They should not be considered for international duty until they iron out the specific flaws which led them to being dropped in the first place.

The best analogy is if a person drops out of college/university and is sent back to high school as a punishment. The person will obviously still do well in high school.
You can’t predict them doing well in college. They have to fix the specific flaws which led to them dropping out.

People like Umar Akmal, Shahzad, Kamran Akmal, Malik, Hafeez, and some others all need to be ignored. Their domestic performances won’t make any difference. All these guys are legends at domestic level but their ability hasn’t improved an iota despite dominating domestics for a decade. We need to focus on trying to find people who aren’t TTFs and can be groomed into becoming international quality.

There is sadly a lack of talent and corruption makes it worse. Hopefully in the next couple of years the new first class structure begins unearthing some gems. The pests like the ones I mentioned above will eventually be weeded out.

Making a comeback that also in a T-20 game when you are chasing a big score is never easy, 1-2 dot balls and the pressure is on. The way they were pounced upon after failing was disgraceful and is only going to add to the insecurity in the squad

Umar Akmal is one of our top T20 players.

Can't be discarded after just 1-2 meaningless T20s in a comeback. We need him at the WT20. Can even keep in T20s.

If Rizwan fails as a T20 player, and tbh he doesn't like right for this format and probably for ODIs either, although it's early tell in that format, then he is the next best option until Rohail is ready.

I don't like why media always club Ahmad and Umar together, as if they are conjoined twins. I feel that Ahmad gets unfair flak a lot of times. He has shown great commitment to fitness, discipline, teamwork, improving his strike rate. He was never a world beater by any means. Media unnecessary hyped him up to be next Sachin (Razzaq comments etc). He takes time to get going, can be a useful opener for Pakistan in LOI. I think once he got hit on head in test cricket, that eroded his confidence. He won't admit it publicly obviously. Stuart Broad was also a useful slogger down the order like Mitchel Johnson but once he got hit on head, now he is a noob with bat.

Ahmed was never good, he was average until he got hit on the head and after that he's been disastrous. Has played more cricket(internationals) than he deserved. Having been given so many chances, he has to be regarded as a failure.
