This movie has its own cult following, but whats so great about it?

I have often wondered the same. The movie has achieved a cult following. But I never saw anything worth it in the movie. Nothing more than 3rd class cheap comedy.

Different people have different taste in movies. AAA is one of the all time best movies along with Hera pheri in Bollywood (comedy genre).

Can watch these two movies anytime and lift up mood.

This movie also has a cult following on PP aswell. Thus i decided to watch it today, just finished it. Didn't get why it has a cult following and why it gets quoted alot.

For you maybe, I can call your taste in movies 3rd class. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's bad. It's just different than your taste. No need to degrade something you don't like brother.

It's a great movie for a lot of people and one of the best comedy movies made in Bollywood imo.

Hera Pheri would get a 5 stars from me.

heera pheeri is good. Infact Paresh Rawal is alegendary actor but he doesnt get the proper recognition for his acting.
Even AAA got oonly more funnier when Rawal's character(s) come in the movie

I called it 3rd class because that’s what I feel about it. Or do I need to take your permission beforehand before giving my opinion on a movie?

And I called your opinion about movies third class because that's how I feel about your taste in movies. :)

I think the movie has a specific genre of comedy. AAA is based more on a term we use in Delhi "bakchodi". I don't know how to describe it but that's what AAA fits into.

You can call every comedy movie releasing these days third class but AAA wasn't third class. No double meaning. No exposing etc. It was a clean movie which you can watch with your family. I remember when I watched the trailer of Hera Pheri I thought it would be another action movie of Akki and Anna but when I watched it I laughed so hard. Have watched these two movies so many times already. I also like Jaane Bhi Do Yaro and that mahabharat scene was classic comedy. :inti

The GREATEST comedy to come out of Bollywood and one of my favourite movies of all time (and I don't watch many Indian films).

It did moderately well when it was released due to lack of promotion but since then it's grown into one of the all time cult classics.

India cannot compete with Pakistan in terms of comedy but Andaz Apna Apna is the greatest comedy product to come out of India.

Aamir and Salman on top form. Fantastic dialogues (akin to some of the greatest comedy dialogue that Pakistan has produced, this tells you how good it is) and one of the best movies of all time.

It really is great and I know many Indian and Pakistani's watch this movie again and again.

Indians normally suck at comedy but in Andaz Apna Apna everything fell into place beautifully.

Cheap brainless comedy and massive overacting by both Amir Khan and Salman Khan.

Never understood why some films become such super hits that they have their own cult following.

Amir Khan movies are great. His Movie Rang de Basanti is my all time favorite, could watch that movies 100 times.

I loved his Fanaa aswell.

Even lagaan was great aswell as 3 idiots and PK

But this AAA, i dont get whats so special. its not even funny comedy.

During the 80s and most of it before there used to be these movies which took kidnapping and robbery too seriously, this movie makes more sense if you watched old Hindi movies where they in their own way mock the scenarios.

This movie mainly has
-Punch Dialogues mocking for example Gogo
-Nalayak heroes, usually Indian cinema’s hero would be all good or all serious not here.

It's all down to that legendary song... 2 mastane chale zindagi banane. And that chorus at the end. Bom Bom. Bom Bom 😂 😂

Glad that you tagged the right people who are long time bollywood aficionado.

Andaz Apna Apna is an acquired taste.

First time I saw it.. I was like what nonsense is this.

But the second time, I was like "this is incredibleeeee". :))

Never understood Hera Pheri hype tho. Thought Hungama was better.

The characters would literally be screaming at each while you would be dying in laughter. Seriously very very under-rated.

Paresh Rawal is another level talent.

In fact, I think making a movie like Andaz Apna Apna or Hungama or Panchatantiram is way harder than vast majority of movies.

As op mentioned, it's a cult following. Unless you are a part of the cult, you won't understand.

For me the best scene is still Amir and Salman at the police station, on the bus or at night about to exchange money with the kidnappers. The poison glass scene is great too

The characters, dialogues, scenes are all well thought out. I guess you had to grow up in the 80s/90s to really enjoy the movie.

Its the best comedy movies to have come out of Bollywood alongside Hera pheri. Period.

i dont watch Bollywood that much, but when i was a kid this was my favorite Bollywood film. they need to remake it or do a sequel.

This is a classic movie. To appreciate the movie, you need to have been born in the era when such comedies were made. I would like to call this movie "the raid" of Indian comedy, where it is constant waves of jokes.

Yeah I don't think people that have watched newer movies would appreciate it much as many of the tropes and scenes have been copied by numerous movies that came after. But for people of the generation that grew up watching movies of that era for them and watched it in the past have a different experience.

Why tag me? I don't watch Bollywood.

Movies are a product of their times. AAA is an ode to simpler times. The younger lot here is used to an extremely different brand of Bollywood. AAA belongs to a totally different era, the jokes, the slapstick, some of it still works but a lot will feel plain silly to younger people. Its pretty much like how the silent slapstick of Chaplin and L&H would have been received by the next generation of moviegoers growing up in a different era, with different sociocultural norms, better technology etc. But it is definitely a classic.

You lost me when you said Humana was better than Hera Pheri. You must be 1% of audience.

Anyways, AAA was funny when it was made. Now it is two decades old. We won't find it funny for sure.

Agreed. I must be 1% of the audience. :D

I watched Hera Phera after I watched Hungama. Maybe my opinion might change if I watch Hera Pheri again.

I think Hungama is an INSANELY tough movie to make.

It's very easy to such a movie to go wrong with characters being way too loud in an unfunny way.

But that wasn't the case here.

I believe such movies don't get made. They just happen.

Even the most legendary directors in the world won't be able to replicate it even if they tried.

It's that good.

Too bad that the Bollywood movies I love are terribly under-rated.

Hungama is one.

No Smoking is another. :))

Just realized that Paresh Rawal had delivered astounding performances in both.

What a guy!

----

AAA is just as funny now. In fact, we will appreciate it even more now.

It was tooo ahead of it's time.

Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

Here's a simple rule to judge the quality of a movie.

Focus on the quality of the "scenes".

Scenes are the building blocks of a movie.

The difference between a great director and an average director is their ability to construct powerful scenes.

A better director will invariably construct FAR more intense, impactful (and funny) scenes than a regular director.

Now when you watch Andaz Apna Apna, you will see it's a collection of amazing scenes one after another.

The intensity, timing, dialogue delivery...everything is so perfectly executed.

Don't go by the masala packaging outside....this is film-making of the highest order.

The amazing combo of Aamir and Salman was the highlight of this movie. Surely, one of hte best Bollywood movies of the 90s. The movie is set to is set to make a spectacular return to theatres on April 25, 31 years after its original release.

The movie has a cult status now because Aamir and Salman both went on to become mega stars and a lot of people are amused to see a comedy film starring both in their younger days. Having said that, for a comedy movie, it’s quite funny. The opening bus entry scene, lockup scenes are absolute classics and Crime Master Gogo absolutely stole the show as well.

I try to watch 1-2 classic films a month just so i can have a feel of my childhood and just the old era. I watched Rangeela recently and now planning to watch Saajan when i get the time. As you grow old it all comes back to you brother.

I will tell you the exact reason- Andaz Apna Apna was a box office flop. I can totally understand that: if you look the movie in isolation- it is very poorly made. Salman, Amir, the heroines their hairstyle, dressing fashion and even age changes through the movie due to the production issues. The music looks like it is from the 1950s. It doesn’t have a proper formula masala script. Audience rejected it.

However once it came on Cable TV or VHS, people had the option to just enjoy the gags and not think too much. Some of the jokes and gags work. Think of it like a bunch of Instagram or TikTok skits. If it’s good it’s good or else you skip. It worked really well especially for the generation in early 90s.

finally someone made sense.

The jokes are lame, and crime master gogo was a retard :P

But i just love Amir Khan and Paresh Rawal movies

It’s not fair to judge old movies from today’s politically correct wannabe perspective. Many movie scenes we laughed at along with our adult parents back in the day would feel criminally wrong today.

Coolie#1 was a fun movie back in the day. Today people will say how wrong it is to marry an innocent girl by pretending to be a millionaire and you would call the hero the actual
Villain of the story.

DDLJ SRK flirting with Kajol would be considered harassment today.

I watched it in the early 2000s and enjoyed it, laughed a lot. Some people might not find it funny. But I got the humour of that time. Aamir and Salman combo was great. Maybe Sallu needs to go back to doing another comedy with Aamir to get his career back on track.

It just goes to show that India was far more modern and tolerant in the 90s and 2000s. But thanks to that chaiwala and his fake, self-proclaimed 'Sanatani' supporters, India has regressed into intolerance and backwardness. The irony is, even the so-called educated have fallen into this trap. Watch TV shows from the early 90s, around the time Zee launched, and compare them to the garbage aired in 2025. India was modern back then, and now it's turning into a chhapri version of itself. :inti

I don't like Indian movies much but this and Dhamaal are some of the movies I really admire.

I enjoy the movie so much even till today. I watched it first around 2000(6-7 year old). Loved it back then as a kid, still love it as it was a very relatable with common life of sub-continent.

Because of this thread, im gonna watch it again.

Its a stupid movie, and i am watching it for the third time.

*** is wrong with me

I would say it's a very specific kind of childish, puerile humour that appeals to a certain age group of men. I've met very few women or youngsters who are fans.

I guess a firang equivalent would be Pineapple Express or Superbad - movies who's appeal would be very difficult to explain to someone who doesn't 'get it.'

Full disclosure - I'm a huge fan. One of my formative movies along with others like Shiva, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Rangeela. Ofcourse along with a few firang movies and shows that made it through as well as some Telugu movies.

Watched it couple of times , first on cable in Pakistan, two decades back then on YouTube, love the innocence of all four lead characters, want to watch it again buy sadly don't have this much of time

This is so correct. We have been pushed into stone age by these so-called Hindus.

Love the dialogues in that movie. Generally I find it hard to now watch the movies I liked in my childhood - especially comedies, but AAA is one of the rare ones that has genuinely aged well!

Besides I am a Aamir Khan fan and love his older films - AAA, Sarfarosh, RDB, Rangeela, JJWS, DCH are genuinely good ones.

What did I tell you ? 🙃

This is so correct. We have been pushed into stone age by these so-called Hindus.

So the Godhra train episode, Kashmiri Pandit massacre circa 1990 , Countless acts of terror initiated by the "peaceful brigade" between 2000-2014 was all actually a evil martian master plan to malign the supposedly very modern and "peaceful brigade" ?

How idiotic and naive can you be? Or maybe you have been hypnotized by the inverse man 🙃 ?

Shiva? The one with Nagarjuna? I really liked Raghuvaran in that movie. What an incredible actor he was. :inti
