Andrew Flintoff & Geoffrey Boycott 'disrespectful' (of WI), says West Indies Cricket chief executive

Criticism of West Indies by former England players has been "borderline disrespectful", says West Indies Cricket chief executive Johnny Grave.

West Indies bowled England out for 77 before setting the tourists 628 to win the first Test in Barbados.

Ex-all-rounder Andrew Flintoff said the "world's gone mad" after West Indies captain Jason Holder made 202 not out.

Former batsman Geoffrey Boycott described the hosts before the series as "very ordinary, average cricketers".

West Indies are above only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings.

But Grave said negative comments about a side who look set to take a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series were "completely unwarranted".

He told BBC Sport: "Criticism of our players and suggestions that they're not world class is unfair.

"They are so dedicated. We've got 11 cricketers here and many more in the region who want to play Test cricket."

England failed to take a wicket on day three as Holder and Shane Dowrich, who scored an unbeaten 116, helped West Indies declare on 415-6.

Grave added: "I saw Andrew Flintoff say he can't believe Jason Holder got a double hundred, yet I think Jason Holder is a fantastic cricketer and has been performing so fantastically over the last 18 months - a brilliant captain."

Flintoff, 41, averaged 31.77 with the bat and 32.78 with the ball in his 79-Test career, while Holder is currently averaging 33.86 with the bat and 28.21 with the ball in 36 matches.

England turned down first-class warm-up match

England, third in the ICC rankings, have won only one series in the Caribbean in the past 51 years.

They lost 1-0 in 2009 after being bowled out for 51 in the first Test and drew 1-1 on their most recent tour in 2015, against a side described as "mediocre" by England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Colin Graves.

Before this series, England chose not to play a first-class match. Instead they drew two two-day games against a West Indies Cricket President's XI in which players were allowed to bat twice in an innings.

BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew said "a lack of adequate preparation" was one of the main reasons why they were bowled out so cheaply at the Kensington Oval on Thursday.

Grave, who was appointed in 2017, said: "We wanted to play a first-class game and asked England to do so.

"We had to pull our best 12 players outside of this team out of our championship to see how our A team would perform against this England side.

"I'd much rather people credit our team. I'd like to see English fans enjoying and celebrating 11 West Indians performing to such a high standard."

The second Test in Antigua starts on Thursday.

England are not very good in tests.

Winning 8 tosses in a row in conditions where it mattered a lot went to their head.

Poor stuff.

England are full of overrated test cricketers for sure ..more like ghar ka root ,Anderson & co

Posters here go on about players like Bairstow who is a very average players in fact Asad Shafiq has better average & more tons them him lol

Bunch of cocky Englishmen put in their place. Windies have always beat their behinds and will continue to do so.

Jason Holder of all people has a higher test average than Flintoff and has played many crucial knocks for Windies down the order.

England are the most overrated Test team, and it's their pundits who tend to over rate them.

Tino Best in the replies :)))

No respect by Flintoff towards the windies. They are a talented bunch who deserve credit for this demolition.

Graceful as ever.

Flintoff is an idiot, should stick to crap game shows.

Boycott is right that WI in terms of Test results have been average, they were whitewashed by Bangladesh recently but at home they have a strong record v ENG and ENG underestimated them.

What an absolute jerk this guy is, international paindu, Holder is already a better alrounder than he ever was.

Flintoff is just a clown nowadays. His TV appearances have clearly made him think he's some kind of comedian but people are only laughing at him right now.

What's wrong with expressing your opinion, in favor of your team. No one was expecting the way WI played in this test, a huge surprise for everyone. Chase is no Lance Gibbs and he took 8 ??

Expressing is fine belittling is not, Holder has been one of the best in business for some time now, this just pure bitterness from Freddie.

Holder is becoming mature with recent performances but let's be real Flintoff was better allrounder.

England got lucky with 8 consecutive toss wins against India and Sri Lanka, they aren't as good as some English pundits would like to believe. Hope West Indies wins the series now.

The English are mostly overrated with a lot of mediocre players supported by a couple of excellent ones. Barring Joe Root, whose form is on the decline, England haven;t really have had a solid middle order. Yes once in a while we have Bairstow or Stokes scoring some runs but it is usually a miss.

The fact that England crumpled to Spin in their 2nd innings on a pitch that offered nothing for spinners totally exposes their batting skills

It was heartening to see a glimmer of the former Caribbean greats in the current victory. Hope the Windies give a thorough drubbing to the visitors which should shutoff Boycott & Flintoff

England gets a lot more coverage than WI with cricket, what with the ashes etc.

Someone like Flintoff seems to have a very parochial view. Disappointing.

Someone ought to remind this ignorant fool that Holder is currently the best test all rounder in the world.

Flintoff is just too busy downing pints to know whats going on in cricket

Everybody's getting carried away including the WI chairman. It's not the England team that disrespected the windies. It's a couple of havebeens. Relax. England team knew they were bested and they will be back next game.

Ian Bishop was unhappy with the comments in the post match talk show with Nasser and Ian Ward for Sky sports. He was like comments of few ex Eng captains were unfortunate and it might have spiced up west Indies team more.

What has Flintoff achieved apart from playing a part in winning one home series against Australia?

Tbf to Flintoff there was a time he was the most dangerous bowler around and made the likes of Ponting and Kallis dance around the crease.

I think his tweets are more of a criticism of England. Windies have been poor for a long time.

Building up to said win he helped beat WI 3-0 away, NZ 3-0 at home, WI 4-0 at home, then a very strong SA 2-1.

His comments are just banter. Boycott’s carry more weight because he is Boycott.
