Both bat in similar positions, both have done well in overseas conditions, and both go about there business controversy free.

Who would you say is the better test player?

I'll go with Mathews as he is more comfortable versus spin than Rahane, furthermore he tends to have more impact on sees than Rahane imo

Be interesting to see other people's opnion on this comparison.

I feel Matthews is more consistent, but Rahane can score more big scores.

Rahane is pretty MEDIOCRE against spin

Ajinkya rahane is miles ahead....
but the day mathews completely stops bowling..... then ajinkya will hav no comparison with him....
bowling is badly hurting mathews and is a big block, ahead in his career... has to play only as a batsman... and within a yr he would be in top 5

Matthews used to be one of the best, still remember his batting performance vs. England. A couple of centuries that helped SL win the series there.

Have to say he has fallen off, as some posters above have mentioned, it could be because of him bowling, which is leading to fitness issues, should give it up. Would definietly take Rahane is being the better batsman at this moment.

Both have the same sample size outside Asia.

Outside Asia : Mathew avg 33
Outside Asia: Rahane avg 54

--------

Mathews averages 52 in Asia with 48 matches
Rahane averages 39 in Asia with 20 matches.

--------------

Unless Indians put rank turners in all series in future, I think Rahane will boost his average in the next 28 matches a lot in Asia. Outside Asia, Rahane is pretty much has been the best batsman from Asia in the last few years.

Two batsmen in different class.

He didn't any play sort of cricket in the last year becoz of back problem and now he is playing only as a batsman for the moment... has to completely give up bowling and move ahead...
otherwise it would be too late... he iz already 31 i guess

Rahane for me. would've picked Mathews if he didn't miss some matches due to injuries.

Excellent! Rahane will do well almost everywhere except rank turners. I will also pick Rahane in tests.

Mathews is comfortably better. But both have underachieved, especially the Sri Lankan. 3-4 years back I thought he would enter the Fab 4 level, in fact was surprised when Martin Crowe didn't include his name while proposing the new fab 4. In fact I believe at that time Mathews had better test credentials than Kohli and Smith.

Injury has let Mathews down big time.

He was destined to be one of the modern day greats. But this guy is quality, Lanka's best batsman by miles.

Matthews. Rahane is average batsmen. Cant step up even though he comes to bat after Kohli who keeps on churning hundreds time and again.

An average of 41 explains his mediocrity.

if methew overcome his fitness issues than he can end up with amazing status. in and outside asia.

Mathews averages 37 in SENA +WI while Rahane 44.Overall I shall pick Mathews though, he is a fighter among a weaker team where he has to take the key role in pressure situations most of the time and he is consistently doing it over the years.

Rahane still has an excellent record away. Averages 45 away but a mediocre 34 at Home. Only bad average away is England with 29. Just shows how bad he is against spin really.
