Hi Guys,

I am moving to Melbourne – Australia in 2-3 months from Dubai. I am looking for guys based in Melbourne who play regular cricket at club level.

Basically I need suggestions/help on:

1. Which club to approach? Any recommendations?
2. Any other information which can help me on quickly integrating or finding a club?
3. Any additional information, etc.

I still don’t know which area I’ll be living there; but hopefully soon I’ll find it out. I am hoping to approach the clubs in advance so I can quickly get involved in their training routine and eventually get a chance to play.

Looking forward for your feedback here or directly to my e-mail: kashif.javed@gemalto.com

Appreciate it !

Most suburbs have their own local clubs you can get details of the cricket clubs from the local council you are in,they should have a website. Also I am sure your friends or relative in Mel can give you a hand, or if you are coming here for studies then the Univ can advice you on their cricket club.

Hi KashifJ, did you end up moving to Melbourne and finding a club?

I am in the process of moving; seems by end of Nov'12 I'll be there. I was in Mel couple of times in Sep & Oct but didnt get the chance to visit any club.

My office is in Mitcham VIC 3132 so I am looking for a house around that area (Surry Hills may be).

Are you in Mel too?
Do you know any good clubs around there?

:)

I am in Melbourne indeed :). I moved from Dubai too but a long time ago. Been in Melbourne now over 11 years and love it. The cricket here is seriously awesome and you'll just love it. Cricket season has just started too, so if you get here by Nov, you can definitely join a club and play.

There are heaps of clubs around here. Every suburb has a club, sometimes more.

I used to live very close to Mitcham and also played for Surrey Hills cricket club for one season.

Depending on what you want to do there's many options;

  • Cricket 'season' in Melbourne is from late September to March as winter / rain finishes up and summer starts up so the weather is much better for cricket. Even then, the first few games often get washed out.
  • Most decent clubs have 3-4 teams. The 3rd and 4th teams usually play on synthetic or matting wickets.
  • The 1st and 2nd teams play on proper turf wickets.
  • There are different leagues, lower grade club leagues, higher grade leagues, sub district, district and so-on.
  • The summer season higher grades and league games are all '2 day games' which are played on a saturday and the next saturday. Each innings can last 70 overs (which is the whole day). Teams can win in two ways, either by scoring more in their first innings, or by bowling out the team twice to win outright (which gives you more points)
  • In the western suburbs, there is also winter cricket (one day games on every alternate Saturdays), so it is possible to play cricket almost all year round.
  • You'll need a car if you're going to work / live in the suburbs, so you wouldn't have problems playing for a club thats a bit further away from where you live as well.
  • I'd recommend going and having a net at a few different clubs and see how you feel etc. Every club has a website and usually has the contact details for the club president / coach etc. and you can enquire directly with them.
Have a look at http://mycricket.cricket.com.au, this is the general website for all cricket in Australia.

There are more specific websites:

Western suburbs (lower grade) - http://williamstown.vic.cricket.com.au/
Eastern Suburbs (lower grade) - http://www.easterncricket.com/
Victoria Turf Cricket (higher grade covers both east and west) - http://www.vtca.asn.au/

These are some of the fixtures, you can have a look at some of the scorecards and see the schedule of games:
