A siren will go off on nearly every smartphone in the UK on Sunday 23 April, the government has announced.

The 10 seconds of sound and vibration at 15:00 BST will test a new emergency alerts system.

The alert system will be used to warn of extreme weather events, such as flash floods or wildfires. It could also be used during terror incidents or civil defence emergencies if the UK was under attack.

We dont have severe flooding which kills large numbers. Wildfires are very rare too.

It seems the UK government are using fear or are preparing the public for a future nuclear attack.

This will sound on ALL smart phones. Dont be alarmed , its only a test....on this occasion.

You are able to turn this off by going to your settings on your Iphone or Android. Which I will be doing.

I guess this something all countries need to be able to do?

curious, why would be turning it off if they are testing for emergency purpose?

I guess this something all countries need to be able to do?

It has already been tested in a couple of areas in the UK, now they are doing a nationwide test.

Tbh bro, its mainly due to the Russian conflict with Ukraine. The UK are hell bent on this conflict continuing even though the public opinion here is shifting towards less support for Ukraine. People are sick of high prices while the UK gov is spending billions for Ukraine. Im hoping its just a fear factor for this reason but it could be tests because at one time or another, they expect some sort of global war.

Nations in Africa, Asia , South America dont need one imo, they are safer from any nuclear attack.

Its not even worth it imo. It will be too late if a nuclear attack takes place. You are not safe anywhere in the UK due to the size of the nation.

They do, it's just with 5G, they need a practice run now.

BBC sent a similar alert a few years back.

Emergency alerts are baked in functionality.

The real question would be, is the West preparing itself for war or some Armageddon like event?

Pointless. It will be too late by then.

woudnt you want a 10 - 15 second lead if disaster was to struck to protect yuor children some how or reconfirm there whereabouts in that space?

Like if there was an earthquake

There are no big earthquakes the UK. We only get very small ones which make you feel a little dizzy but people keep on driving or playing golf.

We dont have huge hurricanes or huge fires either esp not where I live.

In terms of a nuclear attack, you'd rather die in the initial blast. If you go into a bunker you will come out to huge radiation. If you try to run or evade, you will get caught up in the FALLOUT. This could lead to weeks of vomiting, sickening ,radiation ...in short serious pain and then you'd die.

Guess we would have one of these in Pakistan on a daily basis!

Guess we would have one of these in Pakistan on a daily basis!

India and Pakistan have had 4 wars but I dont believe these two nations will be involved in any nuclear exchange. Esp now as both are in the SCO. If anything the attack on these nations will be from outside Asia.

But yes for the floods , earthquakes etc, this could be useful.

In the US, its known as the EAS system - National Emergency Alert System Test.

Here is one from a decade ago. They will be using mobile phones too now.

But this is how it will look on your TV's, all programming will be interupted.

Nothing wrong with this. In Canada it's primarily used in child abduction cases. Every minute matters when a child goes missing and due to this system many lives have been saved.

Sounds good

But here in the UK imo its only to continue the fear in order to allow the government to spend billions on other nations esp Ukraine while Brits are struggling to pay bills.

The public have been assured they can "swipe away" today's nationwide alert system test when their phone starts blaring this afternoon.

Newly minted deputy PM Oliver Dowden has said no action would be needed when it goes off at 3pm today, but in the future it might be the "sound that could save your life".

The system is designed to warn the public if there is a danger to life nearby, mirroring similar systems used in the Netherlands, the US and Canada.

It will last for about 10 seconds at 3pm, with the alert being sent to every 4G and 5G device across the UK.

The plan is to use it to alert people to life-threatening situations including floods and wildfires.

So if you don't have a mobile, like some old people, shouldn't their land lines also ring?

Summary

A siren has sounded on smartphones across the UK as part of a government test of a system that will be used to warn of life-threatening emergencies

However, initial reports suggest many people didn't receive the alert and for some people it sounded earlier than expected
It's designed to be used for serious weather-related events, such as severe flooding, fires and extreme weather and may also be used during terror attacks

Cabinet minister Oliver Dowden said it will be used only in situations where there was an immediate risk to life

The test had originally been planned for the early evening but was moved to avoid clashing with an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium, which kicks off at 16:30

Didn't get an alert but my wife did. We know now who is more valued by the govt

Are you on 3 network?

However, not all users received it at the right time, or in some cases at all. The government said a small number of phones did not receive the alert. It said it was “working with mobile network operators to review the outcome and any lessons learned”.

The Three network appeared to be the most affected. It said: “We’re aware that a number of customers have not received the test alert. We’re working closely with the government to understand why and ensure it doesn’t happen when the system is in use.”

Some users on the O2 and Vodafone networks also reported difficulties, while some reported receiving the alert a minute early – or 20 minutes later

Went wrong for many, some earlier than 3pm, some much later. Some phones nothing.

There were also some people feeling fear esp the elderly who werent aware.

Not aware of this line.

Anyway.

The alert cost UK taxpayers a lot of money.

A sub contract given to infosys. Rishi Sunaks wife is a shareholder in this company.

Open corruption. If people think Pakistan is bad , the UK and USA are on a higher level, they dont even need to hide it.

Wait, an Indian company was responsible for ensuring the alert was a success? Well that explains everything.
