A Sikh woman who reported she was raped in a “racially motivated attack” has spoken out to thank people for their support.

The victim, reported to be aged in her 20s, told officers a racist remark was made to her during the sexual assault in the Tame Road area of Oldbury, West Midlands, on Tuesday.

The Sikh Federation UK said the perpetrators allegedly told the woman “You don’t belong in this country, get out”.

West Midlands Police said the man was detained on Sunday evening and remains in custody. The force previously said they were looking for two white men in connection with the attack.

The incident has raised concerns by the Sikh community about the “current racist political environment” in the UK.

On Saturday, the woman, who remains anonymous, issued a statement through Sikh Youth UK, thanking everyone for their “love and support”.

"We are going through a lot, but the strength and kindness shown by the right people in the community has been incredible and I can't thank them enough for being my voice,” the statement read.

"I would never wish this on anyone. All I was doing was going about my day on my way to work, and what has happened has deeply affected us."

She said the police are “doing their best” to find those responsible and added: “There has been so much love and support, and I am truly humbled. I want to personally thank my family, Sikh Youth UK who have been so supportive, the local Gurdwara committees and Sikh orgs, and everyone in my community who has stood by me.

"I cannot thank you enough for helping me get through this difficult time."

Dabinderjit Singh, the lead executive for political engagement at the Sikh Federation UK, said the attack took place in “broad daylight on a busy road” and that Sikh Youth UK is supporting the victim and her family.

An emergency meeting took place at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara temple nearby after the attack, according to Sky News, with members of the community expressing concern over safety.

“Politicians from all political parties should have zero tolerance for all violent racist attacks,” Mr Singh said.

“The current racist political environment is driven by popularism and created by politicians playing the anti-immigration card who are unashamedly exploiting those with right-wing and racist views.”

Gurinder Singh Josan, the Labour MP for Smethwick, said the “truly horrific attack” was being treated as a hate crime.

He said: “I have now spoken with the Borough Commander Chief Supt Kim Madill and am reassured Sandwell Police are doing everything they possibly can to find the perpetrators.

“The incidence is being treated as a hate crime. The police are working extremely sympathetically with the victim at her pace who has been traumatised by the attack.”

Sikh Youth UK has arranged for a film allegedly portraying Muslim men as predatory sex groomers to be shown at university campuses and Sikh community centres throughout the UK.

It has welcomed Tommy Robinson to one screening, prompting another Sikh group to say it is causing more concern than the Sikh branch of the EDL, because it is accepted within the community and therefore better able to influence it.

The Smethwick/Sandwell/Oldbury area in general has one of the biggest % of Sikh people in the country and muslim as well to be fair, Sikh’s here are very proud & don’t support white nationalist, you get some idiots in the East Midlands as the EDL originated from there, but not down here, all the minority ethnic groups are united against the far right and wont hesitate to fight back against these cowards.

There are some isolated parks there which need to be avoided (some don’t even appear on maps), maybe she was new to that area. Oldbury in general is fine but I wouldn’t get closer & closer to the black country, stay in areas which still have a decent mix of people and women should never travel alone. Ive drove past it many times but never walked this area but yes this is a low grade part of West Brom area, which has improved over the last decade. I think they have arrested one person but the cops are working slowly imo, there cant be too many knuckelhead racist scumbags who were walking the area on the day. Also these kind of scm usually have criminal records so dna searchers should find one of them. Birmingham is prob the safest city for minorities overall, they far right will never dare to walk into the streets of the inner city areas, so people in Bham shouldnt be too alarmed or worried, carry on with their lives but be vigilant in such srub lands areas if you're a female or an old person.

He was concerned recently (about his own safety) so started a thread. I did reply to him with some sincere advise, he will stand out as an Indian immigrant due to his hairstyle, dress style and his accent. A black caller came on and said he proudly supports flying the Union and English flags. His point was clear: slavery is in the past, and we have to move forward. If the majority feel flying that flag makes them happy, then let them.

Now, this reminds me a lot of what happens here with some Pakistani posters. They seem to think that anyone with brown skin who stands for truth, or who supports what’s right, is automatically “brown-nosing” or “bootlicking” a white person.

Here’s my stance: I couldn’t care less if someone is black, white, brown, or blue. What matters is ideology. I have my own eyes, my own ears, and my own judgment about what’s going on. I don’t buy into stereotypes.

Perhaps for someone from India that is what it represents. But in Britain most people have grown up without any identity of colonialism, it is only mentioned in history lessons. The average Brit probably has no idea why the flag is made up of those colours or what they represent. Similarly, people like me, who are Modi supporters and right-wingers, keep the same ideology whether we are in India, Britain, America, or Timbuktu.
