Athletes and actors are paid highly because it is a very inconsistent journey. One you're a nobody waiting tables at a restaurant and next day you could be discovered and become the lead actor in a highly successful TV series like Mad Men. And even then there is no guarantee that success will last long time. So to secure your future, you earn as much as you can.

Athletes pretty much same thing. You retire much earlier than normal people and you have limited time to showcase your talent and earn as much as you can to secure your future. But, people will still argue they are highly paid. Yes, the best of the best get the best offers. Like there are millions of software engineers and only one Michael Dell.

No they aren't.

There are only a handful of good actors and a handful of athletes who win every Grand Slam or become Kobe Bryant because they are best IN THE WORLD.

Anyone can become a doctor or engineer if they study hard enough.

Yes I said it right.

ANYONE CAN.

But everyone can't win a Grand Slam no matter how much tennis hours he puts in, everyone can't become an actor no matter how many hours he practices in rehearsals.

Either you have it or you don't.

And if you can AWE THE ENTIRE WORLD BECAUSE YOU HAVE IT, you deserve MORE MONEY.

Agree about anyone becoming an Engineer or Doctor.

But don't think becoming an actor in most cases is as big a deal as becoming an Athlete.

Look at Bollywood for example, an industry which is being ruled by 3rd and 4th Generations of same family. It's more like a Family Business or a King giving over his kingdom to the Children. What sort of exceptional talent is it that gets passed over from Generations to Generations to Generations?

The probability of someone becoming an Actor ( atleast in Bollywood) is just as much as someone becoming a Doctor or an Engineer .Nothing so very exceptional like in Sports . Just require a Godfather in the Industry and proper training at the right age.

Even mediocre NBA players who are mostly bench warmers make at least 4 or 5 million a year just for handing the towels or jump up and down when the star player throws down a dunk or shoots a ridiculous jumper.

Stupid people are obsessed about what certain actor or player is wearing or how the player dribbles or does cross overs. Hence the players get unbelievable money.

It is sad that none of the scientists get any recognition from a common man. The scientists that are working hard to improve the living conditions or finding a cure for some disease or inventing something new or discovering great stuff. They are the ones that deserve the million dollar contracts. Not the basket ball player that did a reverse dunk or NFL player that stole the ball and ran 100 yards or some foot ball player who scored a goal. Those things never alter the lives of a common man. It just gives a few minutes of pleasure.
