This is like calling all Muslims terrorists because one guy commits an act of terrorism....

If you put 40 000 people in a stadium you might easily get 40 idiots.

But yes, unfortunately that level of comment is heard occasionally at Aussie stadiums. There are a minority of Australians who would find that funny/acceptable & deny or not understand it had racist overtones.

By the same token, there are 10x as many people in the crowd who would tell security or personally tell the redneck to shut up too.

lol i dont think it's that bad... even i giggled at it..

That was just a bit of sledging from the fans. Don't think its too bad. At least it was slightly witty.

I can't post it here, but if this guy loves his kebabs and I was Moeen, I'd have responded with "not early enough for you ya fa...." kinda on the similar lines of the Miandad sledge that he threw at big Merv :shh

But it was big merv who got the last laugh eh... ticket please

One guy out of the 200,000 people attending the match makes a comment and all Australian fans are badly behaved?

That was a lame sledge lol. But can't generalise the whole crowd based on this.

Not even offensive. Grow up moeen

Yeah it is not so bad. Grow up Moeen.
This what Moeen said about the incident
Somebody asked me what time my kebab shop opened,” Moeen remembers with an entirely straight face, free of rancour or resentment. “That’s about it. Nothing major. You take it on the chin.”

Maybe you guys should take your own advice, grow up and do some research before posting senseless drivel.

On Topic: Stupid and racist comment, Moeen responded in a classy way though.

I have been on FB explaining to some Australians why this statement is racist. They just don’t get it.

There is a difference between racism and classicism. This is clearly the latter, which may be immoral but not wrong or illegal.

Nothing can be worse than an entire stand of the Wankhede chanting "Monkey" at Symonds in 2007, not to mention burning stadiums down when you're losing.

Yup. We got no moral authority to protest these things.

I thought it was pretty funny, since it was only one fan and on remark and not a consistence bullying.

I'd have smiled and replied with " ask your wifey she comes by everyday"

That was really really bad tbh. Symo was even projected as the villain in that whole saga..

Or perhaps a little less provokative reply as in

"I closed down my kebab shop to pursue cricket guess I am better at it.

:)) like that joke.

Be it Australia, England or Pakistan, you are bound to hear comments.

You guys have obviously not met faisalabadis...

Lol. If that's not offensive I don't know what is.

Not only is it offensive, it’s racist as well.

I live in UK born here. Ive played football for school teams and local team- much worse things have been said to me.
When your Pakistani - shorter terminology is used alot.

I know what it means. Worse things would have been said to him in his life - he's from Birmingham - man got ran over by a white guy deliberately in his youth days.

Corner shops and kebab, curry comments have always been stated to us Pakistani/Indian communities here in the UK.

Crowds in India are the worst. Even the Asian UK cricket community is known for its racist language - way worse than this

I have seen abuse a 1000 times worse at football games and much worse than this from all cricket fans at Stadiums.

Regardless of how worse abuse can get as compared to this, it is what it is i.e a racist comment. Its 'mildness' does not excuse the intention behind it.

Lol seriously why are people getting so soft these days?? Jesus man !! Grow up all of y'all, this era is probably the most wuss induced era humanity has ever been subjected too I guess!

Moeen Ali should score a hundred in the next Test and then pretend to eat one.

One of my fat friends who loves eating, asked one of our Muslim colleagues to bring Biryani one day . She snubbed him saying that was racist! My friend didn't know what to say.
This incident is in the same ballpark except that Moeen's reaction was classier.

It will take time to reach all of us, the enlightenment that is.

I was referring to the crowd behaviour but i don't believe what harbhajan said was "monkey". I hope you know that famous hindi/urdu cuss word that sounds starts with the same but much more worser than that.

Somewhat funny but hardly offensive.

First of all it's not racist. Islam is a religion, not a race.

Secondly, kebab shops aren't run only by Muslims.

Thirdly, it's just a reference to a profession (kebab shop owner). I don't hear Gujjus / Patels in the US get offended when people imply that they own most of the motels (which they do) and Dunkin' Donuts outlets (which they do).

That incident was quite clear to anyone who speaks Hindi/Urdu/Punjabi.

England cricketer Moeen Ali has spoken about racist abuse hurled at him during games, recounting one occasion where a member of the crowd asked him what time his kebab shop opened.

The comment came as the 30-year-old fielded for England in the Ashes in Australia. But the all-rounder from Birmingham brushed it off as "nothing major".

"Somebody asked me what time my kebab shop opened, but that is about it," said the cricketer of mixed English and Pakistani heritage, who is about to captain England for the first time in Perth.

Ali said he was "not fazed whatsoever" by such remarks and insisted he took it "on the chin".

However, his account is likely to raise scrutiny about unacceptable remarks with regards to "sledging" - a practice where players try to gain an advantage by insulting or verbally intimidating players on the opposite team.

When asked if he had to contend with exchanges on the pitch, Ali said: "From the crowd you get quite a bit.

"You get some good ones and you get some not so good guys... but you take it on the chin."

The comments follow a zero-tolerance policy to any transgressions in the series, in line with the International Cricket Council's anti-racism policy.

The cricketer spoke of benign banter restricted to jibes about his elevated position in the batting order after he was pushed up from eighth to sixth.

He said: "One of the players asked if I was batting one place too high.

"I said I was actually two spots too high... but it went straight over his head."

Ali said he had been tempted to respond more powerfully in the past but chose not to.

"As much as sometimes you feel you want to, you can't afford to do that," he said. "I just like to get on with my own game, and it doesn't faze me whatsoever."

However, the sportsman, who has been hampered by a sore finger, said he was more troubled by his lack of productivity in the first two tests.

First of all islam is a religion - we know this but why have you mentioned this.

Where in the article does it mention Islam.

Has anyone else mentioned Islam in this thread

Your colleague sounds like a really uptight person, void of any sense of humor.

I would have taken it as a compliment and told the fatty he would get a plate of biryani only if he runs 10laps around the block first. He gotta work for his biryani.

I don't like people who see racism in every little thing. If you are so sensitive and mindful then everything starts looking racist to you, even the mirror.

If someone behaves extremely snobbish and arrogant towards me just because he thinks his origin alone makes him better than me, that's where I'd draw the line and not bother with that person. This has not happened to me yet.

If however a handful of stereotypes are being thrown around in good fun than I'd play along and throw some right back. Sometimes it feels good to laugh about oneself and let lose.

Post #4 -- someone called it racist. I'm just trying to clarify that even if this offensive (which it is not), it's not racist.

People get offended too easily.

That was a funny comment on Moeen Ali though it is a bit racist.

This is nothing though. Indian fans are absolute worst when it comes to crowd behavior. Worse than Animals. We have no moral authority to preach about crowd behavior to no-Indian fans.

Poor comment from the fan but I have heard worse in English stadiums and the Aussies have probably heard worse in their own stadiums as well. This is not great stuff but is part and parcel of high level competition.
