All my life I've been led to believe that King Prawns were halal. Yet recently an Imam that we know stated that King Prawns are not Halal and stated that Muslims shouldn't eat them.

Thoughts, are they Halal or not?

There are various schools of thoughts.

IMO, there is again way too much priority and preference given to such topics by some aalims and more important things in Islamic guidance are ignored.

It's not a one size fits all but the gist of it is here that sits well with my opinion

On the subject of sea creatures, the gist is, any water/quatic animal is halal that cannot survive without water.
For example, alligators and turtles, they can live with and without water - so they are not allowed to be eaten.
Land animals that are carnivores are not halal either.
Personally, I also avoid jhattka meat because halal option available almost everywhere so no need to eat jhattka.

There is difference of opinion.

I consider it to be halal since it is from the sea.

These guys also say it is halal: https://islamqa.info/en/answers/191...seafood-that-muslims-are-not-permitted-to-eat.

Anything that is neither one thing nor the other.

Similar prohibitions exist in Judao-Christianity - lobsters, prawns, shellfish (not fish but aquatic), pigs (mammals, but with cloven hooves).

Generally, they are considered halal and this is the majority consensus amongst the scholars.

The key point here is that the Imam did not say they were haram rather they are not halal and thus trying to put in a third category of abominable.

Thus I don’t think you need to stress about this as there’s always someone out there saying this is haram and that thing is haram on things which we considered permissible.

Personally speaking, I’ve never tried king prawns/shrimps, just don’t like the look of them. Similarly, don’t go for prawns either.

Pretty much anything from the sea is halal.

Love King Prawns but not in a desi curry.

They are halal.

Anything to be haram needs explicit evidence.

Quite like in a curry, but it is a bit of a waste. Personally feel prawns and similar crustaceans work better when they are coated and fried, or barbecued. King prawns are too big for much else, but if you are talking about standard ones, they make a nice sandwich as well.

Oh yeah. Had Italian versions as well, but I am partial to the ones you get from the eastern restaurants. Those are the ones I was thinking of when I mentioned it, really it's the main reason I go to Japanese/Chinese restaurants.

Just little prawns for a curry or biryani I’d say.

Save the king prawns — either barbecued or flame grilled and served with a garlic butter dip please! :)

Of course!!

Crispy Fried Noodles with King Prawn...

Every Chinese meal we have has to consist of at least one king prawn dish

It's not explicitly haraam (forbidden), just makhroo (discouraged) in most of the fiqhs of Sunni Islam and Shia Islam.

Ironically it's strongly discouraged in the Hanafi school which most Pakistanis follow but permissible in the Maliki or Shafi fiqh (I get 'em mixed up) yet that doesn't stop Pakistanis from eating them lol.

I like the satay sauce. Really creamy and nutty.
