This guy should be at his peak by now but instead has turned into a very questionable investment .

His average in the last couple of years at number 6 is worse than allrounders like Stokes and Ashwin when he should have been the mainstay of the batting lineup by now .

He is lucky that the pundits for some reason rate him highly otherwise he might well have been dropped by now .Very dissapointed with his development ( lack of ) .

Poor innings from him today and typical of how he has been batting of late.

Subdued, in his shell, negative, not looking to rotate the strike or bat fluently.

Missed a few full tosses today and other freebie deliveries.

They love him Because he looks good at the crease (does not mean good technique).

He average has taken a nose dive as well.

If i remember correctly he had an average of 45 four years back. Then it dropped to 43 after SA series in SA, then to 41 and now to 39. It is on its way down which is worrying.

The problem with his move up the order is that it will now be said that he needs to time to settle in his new position, that is , after 7 years, still too early to tell.

He is the quintessential domestic batsman .
Decent but not good enough to dominate either spin or pace when set ( always falls to the 2nd bew ball ).
Not sure he has it in him to be top international quality. I hope he turns his career around somehow for the team's sake.

2 years ago both his and Azhar's average was similar

Azhar's has gone up by 4 runs and Shafiqs has dropped by same margin

That's probably the reason Pakistanis ignore his struggle with the bat in the last two years.

Have been saying it for years but someone with the experience of Asad should contribute a lot more. And I am someone who sees a lot of ability in him, but the team always should come first.

He is most useless player in the team right now.He should be kicked out.Usman should be given a go now

He is scared to take the responsibility that someone of experience should take. And That's why he wants at 6!

Maybe it's time for looking at alternatives. Shame, I thought he'd fare better after his century in South Africa.

I get a feeling as if he's been taking his place in playing XI for granted.

Don't get me wrong, he is a quality test batter. But he must be sent to bench for 1 series.

Few last tours were tough may be he has lost his confidence or something but now it’s time to start performing

Nothing will change unless the team's approach for test batting changes. Our every player goes to shell while batting in test. Look at Babar.

He needs to be dropped. He's only effective once in the series (if ever) and gets nothing but single digit scores for the rest of the matches.

With Fawad Alam, Fakhar Zaman and Usman Salahudddin as back up options, he needs to be dropped ASAP. The mere fact that he takes an eternity to get going is an extremely annoying thing in itself.

same with azhar ali.. after facing 300 balls, he will still play like he is new to the crease... but temperament is what takes azhar ahead of asad..

He is not consistent enough .

You need to give enough chances but there is a limit for that. You need to consider other options as well.

It was supposed to be.He is a limited batsman. He can't play long innings, that's why he is not a no. 4 batsman.I was saying it for a long time that he was not an ideal bat to invest on for such a long time.

If he does not score a century in the next 3 innings, he should be dropped. He has enjoyed a free ride for far too long now.

This year Asad has played 8 innings (5 tests) and has not crossed 50 even once. He averages 17.5.

Any other batsman would have been dropped by now.

That's exactly the problem though, he too often mails it in for 6-7 innings and then has a century, rinse and repeat.

Where are all those people who blamed Misbah for this type of batting approach? I thought aggressive sarfi would change our test batting.

Fact is the team is full of grinders that will grind no matter how flat the deck is. Scoring 200 in a full day losing 4 wickets against this sl team is criminal.

He should be under severe pressure Unless he can gets some substancial runs this series id drop him

Hes had enough chances to turn his form around

Keep him at four, let him sink or swim. Hopefully he'll rise to the occasion. At 6 he was just being hid away, there's a reason why in general batsmen don't stay at the no.6 position their entire life, they move up once they get experienced to better support the team.

I'd drop Masood, promote Azhar, put Babar at 3 and Asad at 4, Haris at 5 and Usman at 6. We have few good experienced test batsmen in our team, and we need our better batsmen up the order, hence Babar's got to go back to 3. It's the position he'll likely play eventually anyway.

he hasnt kicked on from the promise he showed as a an up n coming player in the 2010-13 period. Overhyped because of a perceived MCC handbook technique.

Far too timid as a number 6 batsman doesnt take the bull by the horns at all. Or change the momentum of an innings like what u expect from a number 6.

He is capable of great innings now and again but lacks consistency and will never become a world class Test bat like Azhar Ali has become.

Will be hovering around the low 40s his whole career and will finish with a decent career at international level but not a great one.

I think if Misbah and Younis had not retired Asad's place would be in trouble. But for now he's got some breathing space but that won't last forever.

Shafiq doesn’t even have a very good domestic first class record. For someone who turns 32 in a few months and has been playing test cricket for 7 or 8 years he really should be pushing on to the next level in his international career - instead he’s going the other way.

Once again, you can't build around someone like Asad Shafiq.

Somehow he bats like it's his debut every time he walks out to the middle. Sometimes it comes off and other times it doesn't.

That's far too risky with a #4 batsman.

Keep him at #6.

Don't want to be too harsh on him, but he's clearly not good enough to bat at 4.

His confidence has been dented mainly because of playing at no.6 after bringing him to no.3 in Test Matches. He's definitely gonna do better than Babar Azam at no.4. He can't carry on playing with tailenders as he doesn't have the game for it. Rightly playing at the no.4 position he has been desperate to play for so long. Needs to be given atleast this series for him to prove his worth.

Unlike Babar Azam who contiunes to play despite doing zero in 10 test matches.

Needs to be benched for a series or even two (And this is coming from a huge PAPA fan.....)

he never had an average of 45 or even 44. The highest batting average he has achieved is 43.89 against england in 2015.

Asad's in the team for his bowling ;)

Move him down to #5 and give #4 to Babar or Haris. Going solely by this test, Haris Sohail is currently the second best batsman in the side.

Before the series I remember how nearly everyone on here was so confident about Shafiq despite being told by Mamoon several times he's the mental midget who we all at expected at first to deliver with his technical ability.

His average is unacceptable for a player who's played in the UAE for years but that isn't the issue - everywhere he goes he seems to typically average 40 in a series with just one ton as the sole innings of note like in Eng last year, UAE series v WI and series in Aus.

Also he can't score big hundreds (which I define as a 150+ score) which has yet to accomplish to date. Like another poster said above he wants to bat at 6 because he can't handle responsibility.

In his absence Pakistan should try out either Usman Salahuddin, Fawad Alam or even Fakhar Zaman (to bat down the order).

What a failed investment .
Some of us had doubts even when he was averaging 40 plus .
Complete letdown.

Why does this guy continue to play for Pakistan ?
Why do the people in Pakistan ( who admittedly have a very bad eye for talent ) rate him ?
Most in PP knew he was a poor investment pretty early on.
His record is actually worse than it looks because of how meaningless his runs are. Karachi used to produce mentally tough batsmen , whatever happened to the production line.

He still has many years of service left in him. I believe in Shaq

Shafiq in the last two years:
866 runs at 36.08

Azhar in the last two years:
755 runs at 29.03

They are a curse and won't end. No one in Pak dares to drop seniors.

Only a maniac like Akhtar would drop these guys straight away.

Only 2 centuries outside asia wow even I could get more hundreds

Most probably not.

Also he has 3. In each of England Australia and South Africa which most of our batsmen haven’t achieved

Lol.3 centuries how many in a winning cause or how many games has he won for pakistan

Usman salahuddin has been waiting for his turn for many years now, the poor guy cant get past asad shafiq the legend. Even iftikhar ahmed got to play more test than him

Someone please put Asad out of his misery and our collective misery and drop him for good.

The guy has sucked throughout his career. His first class average is nothing great either.

He's played at the expense of other talented and promising players. Just like he's played 60+ ODIs for a pathetic 20s average and s/r of 60 odd.

God, what will it take to drop this guy?

I couldn't believe some cricinfo commentators debating on whether he should be in our best 11 since the 90s. What a joke, and what a joke those commentators are. Complete morons.
