England have suffered an injury scare just four days into their Ashes campaign after Moeen Ali was ruled out of training on Thursday with a suspected side strain.

Steven Finn also sustained a jarred left knee batting in the nets at Richardson Park in Perth, although the fast bowler’s fitness will not be as much of a concern as Moeen’s.

Both players will undergo scans on Friday and miss England’s opening two-day tour match against a Western Australia XI that starts the following day.

ENGLAND ASHES SQUAD

Captain: Joe Root

England's Mr Dependable will lead his side into an Ashes series for the first time, and while he has the experience of the series wins in 2013 and 2015, he also has the scars of the last trip Down Under.
Batsman: Alastair Cook
The former captain will be crucial to England's hopes, with the Essex opener needing to find the same resilient form that he displayed in Australia in the 2010/11 series.
With three weeks to go until the first Ashes Test in Brisbane, England are not overly worried at this stage about Moeen’s fitness.

But losing another key all-rounder even for part of the series would be a major blow to the hopes of Joe Root’s team given Ben Stokes is already absent from this tour thanks to the ongoing police investigation into his late-night altercation in Bristol in September.

BAYLISS WRITES OFF STOKES' CHANCES OF JOINING ENGLAND FOR THE ASHES
England are already effectively having to try and replace two players in Stokes, such is the Durham all-rounder’s significance to the team.

Losing Moeen would compound that problem and even if his injury is only minor, the tourists may be tempted to bring in a batsman as cover. If that was to happen, Essex’s Tom Westley, travelling out to Australia with the England Lions later this month, would be the man most likely to be added to the squad.

In terms of Finn, if the results of his scan prove worse than feared another England Lion in Mark Wood could also find himself brought into the squad.

Meanwhile, Mark Stoneman is hopeful that Stokes, his former Durham team-mate, will still be able to join England’s Ashes tour at some point even though coach Trevor Bayliss admitted on Wednesday that he had written off the 26-year-old’s chances of playing against Australia.

The opener, who spent six years playing alongside Stokes at Durham before moving to Surrey last summer, said: “Ben’s a massive miss. It’s a massive miss for him, but also for the team – it’s very unfortunate the way things panned out.

“He’s a fantastic guy, and it was tough to see the events that happened. But obviously, things are still unfolding back home – how it will pan out with the police investigation. It would be great if we could have him here at some point.”

Stoneman, who met his Australian wife Serene while playing grade cricket in Sydney nine years ago, is also looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Ashes.

He said: “It’s up there with the toughest challenges in the world, against the new ball in Australia, with the quick bowlers they’ve had through their history. It’ll be a fantastic challenge and something, I hope, I can stand up to.

“The wife is definitely backing me and England. The in-laws want to see me do well, but I’m sure they’ll be keen for Australia to do well too. It’s a little bit of a mix, but more often than not they’ll be backing the side I’m playing for.”

Ben Stokes in numbers
As for the potential sledging he may face from the Australians this winter, Stoneman, who made his debut in the home series against West Indies last summer, said: “I don't think it just lends itself to Test cricket. I think Aussies in general, if they get an Englishman in front of them, they’re keen to have a bit of a chirp.

“It should be good fun – I’m quite looking forward to it, see what the sledgers have got for us.”

Time has come for Cook to stood up. He has never scored heavily barring the two series which is talked about.

Moeen will be a huge loss. they need him desperately to have any chance

Moeen Ali can become an England legend if he has a similar series in Australia to the one he had against South Africa at home.

He's already a very entertaining player and is loved by the majority of Brits, his lack of a poppy aside.

Moeen Ali needs to be a bearded Graeme Swann and Marcus Trescothick in ONE to save England from defeat.

The sad thing is he was England's best off-spin bowler.

He was but his bowling was ineffective in Australia. Moeen needs to bowl like Saqlain, who found a little success in Australia (?) or better yet, Nathan Lyon.

If Moeen could add a doosra and have it turn even a little bit, he will wreck AUS 24/7.

Moeen is red hot with the bat these days, he should score some runs. However, he will need to bowl out of his skin. Australia is an unforgiving place for spinners.

Lol. Moeen Ali? Will struggle against the short ball and his bowling will get hammered on those wickets. Probably best if he remained injured or his averages will suffer :yk

He will like pace on the ball and will pick up 10 wickets at least in the series if he bowls very slow and full. If he sticks to his normal pies and doesn't develop any variation such as the slider, doosra, he will go 1-121 in 19 overs every innings.

5-0 on the cards. First Hales and Stokes, now these two. England look like they will be fielding a very ordinary team in their first Test match

I seriously doubt his bowling will be effective at all. He was very unimpressive when he toured India and now he'll be bowling on spinners graveyards. If Yasir averaged 80 with the ball, Moeen will be worse I think. As far his batting is concerned, he's a goner if they pepper him with short stuff especially considering the pace and bounce that Pattinson,Hazelwood and Starc can generate.

Moeen Ali and Steven Finn ruled out of England’s first two Ashes tour matches

England will be without the off-spinning all-rounder Moeen Ali and fast bowler Steven Finn for the opening two matches of their tour of Australia.

Scans on Finn’s left knee, which he jarred in the nets on Thursday, and Moeen’s left side, which has been causing him discomfort in recent days, revealed sufficient damage to rule the pair out of the games against a Western Australia XI at the Waca and the day-night match against a Cricket Australia XI at Adelaide Oval from Wednesday.

Moeen’s injury is of greater concern, particularly in light of Ben Stokes’s absence and a history of side injuries that dates back to the 2015 World Cup. The expectation is that he will be fit to play against the CA XI in Townsville from 15 November ahead of the first Test at the Gabba on 23 November. Were he unfit for the first Test, England would face serious headaches over the shape of their side.

Finn’s injury is not as bad as first feared, but effectively renders the final seam bowling spot at the Gabba a two-horse race between Jake Ball and the uncapped Craig Overton. Finn will be monitored by England’s medical staff over the next week, when a final decision will be made on his tour. Should the condition of Finn, himself a late call-up in place of the suspended Stokes, fail to improve, Liam Plunkett and Mark Wood would head the list of candidates to replace him.

England will play a team of 13 against WA XI this weekend, with Ben Foakes, the reserve wicketkeeper, the only fit player in the squad to miss out. Besides Ball and Overton’s tussle for a seam-bowling spot, Gary Ballance and Dawid Malan face a shootout at No5, and the progress of Mason Crane, the only reserve spinner on tour, will be monitored closely.

Australia likely to win this , but it will not be whitewash . It will be hard fought close series.

Steven Finn isn't a huge miss but Moeen is. England will be hoping that he will be fit for the first test.
