I loved and enjoyed his bowling throughout. He had a nice aggressive action, pace, passion everything.

I don't know why Indian selectors didn't pick him at all after 2011 world cup.He was better than most of the pacers who played in between 2011 to 2015. I think India badly missed the service of this wonderful pacer.

I miss his bowling in international cricket too. Do you?

He was very impressive in 2003/2004, and looked like India had found a top quality pair in him and Irfan Pathan, but it wasn't to be. Watched his 6/23 vs. England in the 2003 World Cup live, and it is one of the best performance I've seen in an ODI by a seamer.

No reason to 'miss' him though.

I read on cricinfo that he was number 2 in bowlers ODI ratings when he got injured. He hasnt played intl cricket since then

I would still take him above someone like Mohit Sharma, Vinay Kumar or Ashok Dinda. He could have been one of the best Indian pacers ever had his career not been halted by injuries.

Miss is quite a strong word. He's like that "uncle" who used to hang around with your Dad every now and then. When mentioned you"d be like "Who?" and then "Aah, yeah I remember him, he's alright I suppose"

Too much injuries killed his career. 16 years career consisting of just 17 tests and 120 ODI's is a testament to that.

Yes, i saw it live too. An amazing display of swing with pace.

But that was not all. From 2009 up to the semifinal of 2011 world cup(which was his last outing for India he took 65 wickets in 48 matches, the second highest tally after Sakib (took 68 wickets in this period). And he took 2 for 33 in 10 overs against Pakistan. So he was in his prime form. Still he was not recalled.

he was dropped for a fair bit of that too

He got injured after his last ODI in 2011. But that was not so serious injury and he recovered fully. But he was never recalled again!Even now at 36 years of age his bowling is sharper than Umesh, 2 Sharmas .I saw him bowl in last IPL in which he was among top 3 in wicketaking as far as i can remember.

Pretty sure most non-Indian fans do. I'd rather have Sourav Ganguly bowl instead of him.

The problem with Nehra is if his bowling doesn't click, his batting is poor and his fielding is horrible. These days, bowlers have to either bat or field a bit along with their primary job. Plus, I don't like his body language too much either. The drooping shoulders, the defeatist look. It's kinda demoralizing.

He was a better bowler than the amount of stick he got but I can understand why he isn't selected. Maybe they could pick him for the T20 WC in India.

He is a rhythm bowler. Bowls some great spells , but in between he leaked a lot of runs Also. The Indian captains wanted more consistency. Also , at that time there were too many left armers playing.

I do. Total champ. Saw his recent interview where you could see how passionate the guy is for playing for his country. India needs player like him.

India has tried around 19 bowlers after Nehra won them the semi final in 2011 WC.

Almost all of the 2011 WC team was selected after the WC EXCEPT nehra.

Poor guy.

injury happens.. liked his batting, he hits six for fun against pak :afridi

Injury is always an issue with the pacers. He was quite popular in Pakistan during that 2004 tour. My mamu met him and other players when they visited Gawalmandi food street during that tour.

Feels like i'm back in 2001.

What a talent he was. Still is. :nehra

Ashish Nehra was MSDs last over specialist and has mostly delivered (except for one instance in the 2011 WC against SA which most fans would remember).

Pakistani fans might remember his last over performance in the first ODI at Karachi in 2004 which India won narrowly. As it has been pointed out he is a rhythm bowler and luckily for India seems to be in it at the moment. Fingers crossed he can sustain this form till the WT20. That he has only one skill set in his armour is a serious disadvantage for him but if he can make it count in his bowling, he will serve the team well..

Nehra > Junaid

What a massive insult to Junaid. Junaid was a proper pacer who could swing the ball and bowl upto 149 clicks and owned even Kohli with his swing and pace. He just needs to recuperate from his knee issues and he'll come back fitter, quicker and swing the ball even more.

Expected better from a quality poster like yourself :moyo

I failed to detect if it was sarcasm or not. Can you please clarify? :amir

Junaid and swing. What do you think? :yk

Ah yes. How could I forget him swinging the ball both ways in England at the Champions Trophy. All this at 145kph.

Bilal7 can attest to this. :srini

None but bilal can. He has an eye for talent that even BD doesn't :)))

Your sarcastic posts have more truth in them than your regular ones.

Nehra was a rubbish bowler who had a few good moments. Junaid at 23 was better than Nehra at his peak.

Rubbish bowler!
Have to change the meaning of that word to sound sense

Miss Nehra as much as Rana Naveed - which is not so much.

Good bowler but not memorable enough.

On that note... Rana Naveed...

Anyone remember his over vs Wahab Riaz in that Mohali semifinal game? Riaz was like a rabbit caught in headlights unable to connect any of the 1st 4 balls and got out on 5th. :91:

In his heyday very underrated bowler- could swing it at lively pace, big hearted
I met him once at kings cross train station - really good bloke - Much taller in person

This "rubbish" bowler averages the same as Wahab in ODIs.

He was more popular than Imran Khan: Ashish Nehra on India cricketer during Pakistan tour of 2003-04. The Sourav Ganguly-led Indian side was touring Pakistan for the first time since Kargil War and they ended winning both the ODI and Test series.

There still may not any clarity on the next India vs Pakistan Test series but a little more than 16 years ago in 2003-04 when India toured Pakistan for the first time after a similar sort of gap between bilateral series involving the two countries, the situation was different.

The Sourav Ganguly-led Indian side was touring Pakistan for the first time since Kargil War and they ended winning both the ODI and Test series. There were some memorable performances from the likes of Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Irfan Pathan but according to former India pacer Ashish Nehra, the most popular and memorable cricketer of that tour was right-arm pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji.

Balaji, who played in all three Test matches and the five one-dayers during that tour and was also instrumental in India’s victory in the series-deciding third Test at Rawalpindi by picking up 7 wickets, was referred deemed as the popular Indian cricketer during that tour by Nehra.

Nehra said Balaji was in fact more popular than former Pakistan captain and current Prime Minister Imran Khan during that tour.

“In the dressing room, Irfan can give you more stories, the only thing I remember is Laxmipathy Balaji on that particular tour. Maybe that time he was more popular than Imran Khan,” said Nehra in Star Sports’ show Cricket Connected.

Balaji had also hit Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami for sixes during the ODI series of the series.

“Those six weeks he was hitting sixes left right and centre there was no doubt about it. Virender Sehwag triple hundred, Rahul Dravid double hundred, Irfan Pathan performance, all that is there but to me off the field, Pakistan, the nation as a whole and Laximathy Balaji in the dressing room,” said Nehra.

“I still remember Javed Miandad inviting all of us to his house and that food in his house was amazing, I still remember it,” Nehra added.

Balaji played eight tests, 30 ODIs and five T20Is for India and picked up 27, 34 and 10 wickets across the formats respectively before announcing his retirement in 2017.
