England can regain the Ashes and capitalise on their "best opportunity" to win a World Cup in 2019, says new director of cricket Ashley Giles.

Giles, 45, succeeded Andrew Strauss in the role in December after the former England captain stepped down to support his late wife's cancer battle.

He will oversee plans for the World Cup - beginning 30 May - before a Test series against Australia in August.

"I need to make sure there's no interference to derail us," said Giles.

The former England spinner told BBC Sport: "I believe we can win the World Cup and the Ashes. This year creates probably the best opportunity for a long time.

"I think with World Cups we found ourselves, in the past, suddenly running into a bit of a meltdown or change - that's not the case this time around."
'Strauss' legacy is clear'

England and Wales will host the World Cup, which is held by Australia following their 2015 win.

Giles praised the legacy of Strauss in improving England's fortunes in the shortest forms of the game; pointing to the country's rank as number two in the world in Test cricket and number one in the one-day game as evidence of a balance being struck.

"I think the focus on white-ball cricket has been a real step change in what we do," added Giles. "I was involved from a coaching perspective in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and white ball played second fiddle to Test cricket.

"Andrew addressed that balance and the results are pretty clear. I know it must have been incredibly difficult to give up the role on the eve of a World Cup he has worked so hard towards."
One head coach or two?

Giles said his team were "devastated" for Strauss, who lost his wife Ruth to cancer in late December.

He says he hopes to sit in on selection for both the World Cup and Ashes before turning his attention to appointing a successor to head coach Trevor Bayliss, who will leave his role after overseeing both events this summer.

Giles was sacked as England's limited-overs coach in 2014 after a period in which coaching duties were split, with Andy Flower in charge of the Test team.

A return to splitting duties for different formats of the game between two men is again an option, with Giles adamant "it can work".

"My experiences with Andy don't lead me away from doing split coaches," he added.

"What we are seeing with players is, once where we thought we may have red-ball and white-ball players, a lot play a few forms of the game now. There is a case to have the same guy managing them.

"With the workloads we have coming up, it is one of the options to have split coaches, either at the top or underneath.

"There's always a shelf life to this too. You're not going to be in coaching or management for 10 years. A dressing room stops listening."

They'll pakka win the Ashes. Only question is whether they can be as ruthless as Australia and whitewash them 5-0 - weather permitting.

Knowing England, probably not. They'll win 3-1 or something at best and roll out the knighthoods.

The World Cup will involve one knockout game or the other at some point and that could be their undoing like in the Champions Trophy.

Pakistan once again will come in the way.

Did in '92, '17 and somehow again this year.

I'll be surprised if they don't win the Ashes but World Cup is harder to predict, all it takes is them to play badly in one knockout match, as they found out on 14 June 2017 in Cardiff!

There have been just three English cricketing Knights since the 1970s - Cowdrey, Bedser and Cook. Botham was Knighted for services to charity.

I agree that England will regain the Ashes but slip up somewhere in the WC, probably against Pakistan again.

They should just focus on making the semifinals first (something they haven't done such 1992).

In my opinion there are 6 teams capable of winning the tournament: England, India, NZ, South Africa, Pakistan and Australia. The other 4 teams (Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Windies) will provide upsets but can't go all the way.

Regarding the Ashes, England are probably favourites. Only NZ and a full strength South Africa would be expected to beat England in England, but I wouldn't be surprised if Australia does well. I'm picking a 2-2 draw.

Incredible ODI team with all the bases covered. They bat until No.10 and can score or chase down any targets. I will be very surprised if they don't reach the final in the WC.

May have got the terminology wrong - what about the other honour awarded to every member of the 2005 Ashes squad? Even Collingwood, for his grand total of 17 runs in the series.

England is the Belgium Football team of cricket. Dream team and exciting, but won't win anything

They were undone by a slow pitch in the Champions Trophy, but I think they will be better prepared this time.

Definitely the heavy favorites along with India. Ashes is of course a given, and I hope they go for a whitewash.

Personally, I believe things will change this Ashes 2019.Australian team have gone through a lot in 2018 and it will only make them more tougher.

When Smith and Warner comes, they will have a point to prove.

Starc and Hazelwood have a point to prove now.

Paine, Khwaja, Bancroft are not giving up either. This will be a hard contest Ashes than anyone in last few tours in England conditions.

England technically has the best chance to win a world cup alongwith New Zealand. Rest of the teams have loads of weaknesses.

Yeah, for winning a home series against Australia lol.

Every Indian cricketer should get the Indian equivalent when they make their debut haha!

It is difficult to explain the pain of seeing the Ashes in enemy hands for sixteen long years to someone who is not English or Australian. To see one’s team not just beaten for eight series in a row but hammered every time, home and away.

Then to watch the most extraordinary 2005 series unfold across a glorious summer like a great novel - tests two, three and four all going down to the wire - the decision behind the awards can be understood.

Pakistan is their boogey team. They try to overdo it vs Pakistan and then fall short. The only team I am 10/10 confident of facing in a knockout of any tournament, should pray they don't face us in QFs, Semis or Finals (Insh'Allah).

They'll bottle the WC the moment they a) play on a track that isnt a complete road and b) get to the knock-outs.

The role of Morgan and Root will be key to the world cup hopes. They have the ability to anchor on tougher pitches which could make the difference.

I know England are favourites slightly ahead of India but i would go with India to win the cup if i had to choose one out of the two and i'm saying this as a pakistani. India just has the ability to win the crunch moments while England completely ruin their chances. Proved many times. '92 world cup, '87 world cup, 2013 ct final. 2017 ct semi final. MANY TIMES. In '92 they got pakistan out for like 72 or something but couldn't chase it due to the weather and failed to win in the final.
Also, it is even harder to predict the winner as the weather of England is not great hence some easy points may be lost by teams.
