Pakistan eyes title at Asian Champions Trophy as tournament begins in China

Green Shirts are set to begin campaign in the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament today, facing Malaysia at 12:45 PM Pakistan time. The tournament, which runs from September 8 to September 17, is being held in Holy Nabibor, China, and features teams from India, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, and China.

Pakistan is favorite to win the title, having strong history with trophy three times. The team’s performance will be closely watched following their disappointing exit from the semi-finals in the last edition of the tournament. The previous defeat to India on August 9, 2023, marked their first time missing the semi-finals in the tournament’s history. In that match, India dominated with a 4-0 victory, including two goals from Harmanpreet Singh.

The current champions, India, won the title last year with a 4-3 victory over Malaysia in the final. Japan secured the bronze medal by defeating South Korea 5-3. In the recent Olympic hockey competition in Paris, India also claimed the bronze medal by beating Spain 2-1, thanks to a standout performance by captain Harmanpreet Singh.

Pakistan’s fixture schedule includes their first match against Malaysia today, followed by games against Korea on September 9 at 10:30 PM Pakistan time, Japan on September 11 at 10:30 PM Pakistan time, and China on September 12 at 3:00 PM Pakistan time. The team will conclude their group stage with a highly anticipated match against arch-rivals India on September 14 at 12:45 PM Pakistan time.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation has been preparing intensively for the tournament, with training camps held at the Naseer Banda Hockey Stadium in Islamabad. Fans and analysts are eagerly anticipating how Pakistan will perform and whether they can add another title to their illustrious history in the Asian Champions Trophy.

Impressive stuff from Indian hockey
It was a nice outing for a fresh squad but some more goals were required. Our PC conversion is still not that great. The defence is solid but there is still last minute jitters as seen in the China where they dominated in the dying minutes. They were unlucky to miss out of a few goals.

Overall I expect this squad to get better as the tournament goes on.

Is this really the prize for being an MOTM , thats like around 18k INR or 58k PKR. This is nothing in the world of professional sports. Did they find no proper sponsor for this tournament?

Asian Champions Trophy: Pakistan's second match against S Korea ends in draw
Pakistan ended on Monday their second match against South Korea in a draw in the ongoing Asian Hockey Champions Trophy being played in China.

After failing to defend their two goal lead, the Green Shirts ended the second clash in 2-2 draw against the opponents.

South Korea took the lead by scoring a goal in the second quarter, which remained intact until the third quarter. Pakistan’s team could not score any goals up to the third quarter and was losing by one goal.

However, in the fourth quarter, the Pakistan team made an impressive comeback, with Hanan Shahid scoring two quick goals.

But before the match could end, Korea scored another goal to level the game.

So far, Pakistan have not been able to secure any victories in the Champions Trophy. Yesterday's match against Malaysia also ended in a 2-2 draw.

The national team will play their third match on Wednesday against Japan.

The eighth edition of Asian Champions Trophy started on Sunday at the Moqi Hockey Training Base in Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia, China.

India are the defending champion after they won the title for a record fourth time in Chennai in 2023. India are also coming into the tournament on the back of winning bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics last month.

The tournament started on September 8 during which the six teams involved will play each other in a round robin format before the top four teams qualify to the semifinals.

The semifinals are scheduled for September 16, while the third place playoff match and the final will take place on September 17.

After a day’s break, India will take on nemesis Pakistan on 14th while the Semi-Final and Final will be held on 16th and 17th September respectively.

Glad to see the improvement in this match. Malaysia will be a bit more challenging but I expect us to go through that too.

Looks like pak hockey is improving, they were close to winning both the games.

I didn't see the Indian squad, I hope we have sent a B squad as this is not related to olympics or world cup qualification.

I don't know why China is unable to dominate hockey and soccer. They have so much of infra, resources and money. Plus football is super popular here...

Possibly because team sports are not their thing. The Chinese tend to excel more in sports which involve individual performances.

China is mediocre in team sports. Even after pumping billions in football, they still haven't qualified for the World cup barring the 2002 edition

Pakistan Beats Japan in Asian Hockey Champions Trophy

In a thrilling encounter at the Asian Champions Trophy, Pakistan Hockey triumphed over Japan with a 2-1 victory, marking an important win in their campaign.

The match on Wednesday evening saw Pakistan take an early lead, displaying strong offensive skills and tactical play.

The game came alive in the second quarter when Ahmed Nadeem struck the opening goal for Pakistan, followed shortly by a well-executed effort from Sufyan Khan, doubling their advantage.

Pakistan’s swift and coordinated attacks kept the Japanese defense on the back foot, allowing them to establish a 2-0 lead.

However, Japan mounted a spirited response, with Raiki Fujishima pulling one back before the half-time whistle. His goal revived Japan’s hopes, creating an intense atmosphere as the teams headed into the break with Pakistan holding a slim 2-1 lead.

The second half saw both teams battling for control, but Pakistan’s defense remained resolute, repelling several Japanese attacks. Despite Japan’s efforts to find an equalizer, Pakistan held on, securing the much-needed win.

This victory provided a morale boost for the Pakistan Hockey team as they secured their first win in the tournament. For Japan, the loss is a setback, but their performance, especially in the latter half, signals the potential for a comeback in their upcoming matches.

Absolute domination by us. Can ask nothing more than a 8 - 1 victory. Glad to see Pak register a win vs Japan - it seems after a long time India and Pakistan are at no.1 and 2 in Asia. Makes the last match not a dead rubber

China Korea 1 - 1 currently in 4th quarter.

Quite shambolic performance by both teams not gonna lie. A lot of mispass, fallen sticks, and bad clearance

As I say this, Korea respond by scoring a goal from PC

China 1 - 2 Korea

Another goal from another PC.

Terrible defending from China, there was a defender on the line but he couldn't stop it. The goalie missed it too..

Korea have been pretty good for the last few minutes. Looking like a top-10 nation - are they the team to beat for us?
I sure hope we don't choke like in 2021

Korea win 3 - 2. There should have been a 3rd PC in the end due to deflection off a Korean defender's foot but the hooter rang before

Asian Champions Trophy: Rajkumar Pal hat trick hero as India beat Malaysia 8-1

A clinical display by the Indian men's hockey team as they defeated Malaysia 8-1 in their third match of the Asian Champions Trophy at the Moqi Training Base in Hulunbuir on Wednesday.

Rajkumar Pal was the hat trick hero for India while young forward Araijeet Singh Hundal scored a brace. Apart from them, Jugraj Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Uttam Singh also scored a goal each while Malaysia's only goal came from Akhimullah Anuar. With the win, India maintained their top spot in the tournament with three wins out of three.

India were off to a great start as Rajkumar scored the first goal of the match in the third minute. He showed nifty stickwork and control to beat the defenders surrounding him and the goalkeeper. Moments later, Araijeet converted a chance from a tight angle and India added a third in the seventh minute when Jugraj Singh unleashed a powerful dragflick. Not even halfway through in the first quarter and India were already 3-0 up.

The goals continued in the second quarter with Harmanpreet Singh adding a fourth from a penalty corner. He was failing to execute the shots with a couple of attempts earlier but once he got it right, there was no saving. Malaysia were decent on the ball but they didn't offer much attacking wise and defensively, they were all over the place.

Rajkumar scored his second of the match in the 25th minute. Araijeet started the move and passed it to Uttam on the right, who went for the shot but the goalkeeper saved it. The rebound fell to Rajkuamar who did well to control it and finish the chance.

The Indian midfielder completed his hat trick after the break. Vivek Sagar Prasad's initial shot was blocked by the Malaysian keeper Adrian Albert but it was a poor clearance. Rajkumar won the ball back quickly and slotted past the keeper.

Malaysia's Akhimullah pulled a goal back for Malaysia after India failed to clear the initial ball to make it 6-1 but India got two more goals in the third quarter via Araijeet and Uttam as Malaysia's defence went missing again.

No goals were scored in the final 15 minutes but the result of the match was long decided even before the final quarter got underway.

IND 3 - 1 KOR

India managed to make it four wins in as many games as they were tested against a resilient South Korea unit during the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 clash that took place at the Moqi Training Base in China on Thursday.

On Wednesday, India thrashed Malaysia 8-1 in what was a one-sided affair with young striker Raj Kumar Pal recording a hat-trick. India had earlier defeated hosts China 3-0 in their tournament opener before getting the better of Japan 5-1. The six-team tournament is being played in a round-robin format and the top four will advance to the semifinals on September 16 followed by the final on September 17.

Against Malaysia, the odds were against India going by recent results. The last match between these two sides was the final of the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy where India were trailing 1-3 at half-time. In that game, the Indians came roaring back to eventually register a 4-3 win to claim the title.

The Indian strikers continued their fine form in the tournament and scored five field goals and three penalty corners, converted by Jugraj, Harmanpreet and Uttam.

Malayasia and Korea have gone down so much, I remember losing to them in late 1990s , the Pillai era.

Lol
They didn't go down, we went up. We were outside of top 10 and were on par with those teams 10 years back. Now we are no 3/4/5. Hence the gap.

Close match against Korea. Unsurprising since they have been proven to be out bogey team historically in Asia.

As for Ind Pak - after a long time we might see some quality hockey. It's a shame not many would probably care

End of third quarter:

India still lead 2-1, thanks to two goals from captain Harmanpreet Singh in the 13th and 19th minute.

Quite a shambolic performance by us given the ranking difference. Had pak converted a couple of their chances ,it would have ended badly for us. I am guessing this is due to the pressure of India-Pak matches though they have done extremely well previously so. A lot of passes were missed, definitely need to improve the chemistry of the squad.

Tensions Boil Over in India vs Pakistan at ACT 2024; Players From Both Teams Butt Heads After Rash Tackle on Jugraj Singh

When it’s India vs Pakistan, expect tensions to flare up. That is exactly what transpired today in the Asian Champions Trphy clash between the arch-rivals, as both teams got into a heated scuffle after Pakistan’s Ashraf Rana clattered into India’s Jugraj Singh in the final quarter of their encounter.

Defending champions India continued their unbeaten run in the tournament and defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 2-1 to enter the semifinal of the Asian Champions Trophy on Saturday.

It was India’s fifth consecutive win in the six-team round-robin competition.

Pakistan took the lead through Ahmad Nadeem (8th minute) before Harmanpreet Singh (13th, 19th) converted two penalty corners to hand India the win.

With 10 minutes to go and all the pride to play for, both teams were going at each other, maintaining intense pressure as Pakistan tried to eke their way into a draw.

This was when Arshad Rana let his frustration get the better of him.

Pushing for an equalizer, Rana rammed his way through Jugraj Singh inside India’s circle. This didn’t sit well with skipper Harmapreet Singh and co. who instantly went up to the Pakistan player to give him a piece of their mind, before the umpires and the rest of the Pakistan team came in to intervene and diffuse the tension.

A review was then called by the umpires, and upon a check, it was decided that Rana would receive a yellow card for his rash tackle, leaving Pakistan with just 10 men to play with for the remainder of the 10 minutes.

India tried to capitalise on the same, as they pushed hard to build on their slender lead. But, nothing came out of the same, as the Indians clinched the nail-biter of a win.
