Asif Ali can be to Pakistan what Jos Buttler is to England

Buttler is a better LOI batsman than even Babar, lol at comparing with Asif Ali.

lol dont obsess with babar... butler is not in the top 10 in either t20 or odi ranking and babar is in both.. no comparison... just like no comparison with asif and butler..

I don't care about stats and rankings. Maybe not in ODIs, but in T20s, I will always pick Buttler over Babar.
 
You open or play Buttler at 3 in a team like Pakistan and ask him to pad stats and play risk-free cricket against weak teams like Babar does, and he is going to score hundreds for fun.

You put Babar in the England team and ask him to play hi-octane cricket and take risks on almost every ball like Buttler does and he is going to average in the 20s.

Buttler is clearly a far more talented player than Babar.

They are completely different players with different roles. Its like trying to compare Kohli vs Dhoni, no one sane ever does this comparison. Butler can't bat like Babar no matter how hard he tries, Babar has more proper shots, better balance, better defensive base and picks up the length much quicker.

Babar obviously can't hit the ball like Butler can. They play different roles but Babar's role is more important on average to a team.

Babar will go down as a much greater batsman overall in history books.

Giving a beast performance in the PSL, finally he can play the same explosive role for Pakistan in the T20s.
 
I think anyone against such a rubbish line up can go into “beast mode”.

Theirs nothing to expect from him. He will get another chance, fans will hype him up to the moon, he will fail and finally people will blame Misbah
 
effortlessly clearing the ropes in PSL. Easily the biggest hitter with a Pakistani passport right now in the world. Not sure why he likes to give catching practice to boundary riders in international cricket?
 
Asif Ali, Shan Massod and Iftikhar again conning Pakistani fans and will be hyped again. :D

The only reason these players are rocking in PSL because of low quality international fast bowlers in the league. The local bowlers are easy for them because they are not international quality and they have played them in Pakistan domestic cricket as well.

The same Asif, Shan, Iftikhar ec. were mercilessly exposed in International cricket multiple times against better attacks.

PSL will never grow because the distribution of International players is unequal in the league. Most teams pack international batsman in playing XI (because of lack of batting talent in Pakistan) and fill mix of old washouts, local inexperience and Pakistan international as bowlers.

The day when PSL franchise signup current top quality fast bowlers, that day the league will be 100 times better than what it is currently.
 
Despite more middling performances in the domestic T20 competition, Asif Ali has somehow retained his place in the squad. I guess one positive is that he's not as big a liability in the field as Azam Khan, so it could have been worse.

Is this the beginning of something special? Or just a blip in the regular trajectory for Asif Ali? Hope he does more of this, was very disdainful in his six hitting today especially the second one off Southee!
 
Form is temporary, class is permanent. Don't think i have ever seen a clean striker of the length ball in Pakistani Cricket History after Abdul Razzaq
 
He smashed a trundler, still needs to do it against the genuine quicks, but credit to him for taking leadership and refusing that single. Maybe that will give him the confidence to really show what he is capable of from here on in.

Trundler or not....the pressure was immense.

People shot not forget, that 20 runs he hit Nortje in the warm up match was pivotal for his confidence

If he can do it against one of the best, he can do it against anyone
 
Finally the persistence with Asif Ali is paying off.

Asif Ali is unleashing the beast in him. Incredible stuff for back to back games now.
 
He showed a lot of guts turning down that single. Deserves a lot of credit for his leadership.
 
I'm all apologies. I can not have been more wrong about this dudes mindset. Obviously talent wise he will have to keep working. But The confidence to turndown that run because he knew he was going to unleash carnage from his end was just awesome

He doesn't look as bad as he used to. He did hit Southee, Nortje and Boult for sixes in the last game. Needs to get a plan against offside yorkers and work on strike rotation a little.
 
Clean hitter this guy. I am glad he is showing maturity. Reminds me of A.Razzaq.

I had my doubts but Asif proved me wrong. Great batting by Asif. Clean striking of cricket ball. Easy as you like.
 
Actually I am feeling something is working for whole Pak team not just Asif Ali , may be a prayer effect I think but suddenly mediocre players have transformed altogether and playing like champions and absorbing all the pressure which is very unlike Pak team

Basically THE player Pakistan has needed in LOIs since Razzaq if he can keep this up, excellent finishing in the last two games from him. It's crazy how he makes it look effortless.
 
The only question now is to watch him do it against real pace (we may face AUS in semis if we go ahead) and spin.

I would pose the wuestion to others who watch PSL etc - how does he do against spinners? His bat swing is good for medium pacers but not sure about express pace or spin. Grateful for pointers - thanks!

Has answered most of the questions posed to him about his ability to not buckle under pressure and not be a total liability in the field.

Need not have swung on the last three balls of Southee’s over in the previous game but cannot fault him too much right now.

What's stopping him from smashing it in FC and tests?
 
If Pakistan bat first then they need to be flexible with Asif Ali.

No point in him only facing 10 or 15 balls.

I have never liked Asif Ali and still don’t think he’s the answer, but hats off to him for the last 2 games. Very delighted for him since finding out he’s had tough few years specially with the loss of his daughter. Long may it continue him serving humble pie to people including me.

Wow, what a boss! He just casually hit 4 sixes in an over like it was nothing. The delivery's were poor but still some outrageous power displayed. He is clicking at the right time and he won us two crucial games.
 
Asif Ali was awful previous to this tournament for Pakistan but that’s because he wasn’t ready or in the right frame of mind. The reason because he was overseas with no support given during the loss of his child.

Asif is a good hitter and can certainly be a Jos Butler but even better as Asif Ali.

That’s why Asif Ali deserves full credit. No one in the Pakistan side would have pulled that off.
 
This is awesome hitting by Asif Ali and will take something to stop him.
I think only bounce in wicket can restrict him but on these pitches everything sits up nicely.
He could be the X factor for Pakistan in this world cup and also the reason Pakistan can get above par scores batting first..

Yeah he deserves full credit. He backed himself and finished the job clinically.
 
People like Shadab, Babar, Imad etc would try to score 24 runs in 12 balls by running 2s, looking for paddle sweeps, ramp shots and the odd boundary

But Asif Ali just made it look so easy! This is the kind of confidence you would see from the likes of Pollard, Bravo, Miller, Morgan, Maxwell etc. we have lacked a player like this for so long!
 
I know Asif Ali is not a machine but the way he was struggling to hit Scotland’s spinner in the last game was slightly concerning.

Australia would be bowling their spinners versus him for sure. I would be pleasantly surprised if Asif does another boom boom in the tournament.

They will be bowling lot of short stuff either directed towards head or outside off. Malik will be targeted in Ribs as his known weakness against pace. Coming to the thread Asif has lot of potential its all about having a game plan about which balls to go after. I don't believe in silly comparisons but he can be mighty good
 
I am starting to think if Asif Ali’s 7 glorious sixes in World T20 is actually going to do a lot of damage to the team in the long run.

He has been poor ever since that game against Afghanistan.

The issue is that he has always been poor in international cricket except for those two knocks against NZ & Afghanistan. This is very concerning.
 
Asif Ali indeed batted very well to get Pakistan to the semifinal but do not forget the fact that all those teams who batted second pulled out the rabbit from impossible situation. Noot taking away the credit from Asif Ali but he has to realise he has never performed well for Pakistan and we do not want bring back that old culture where performance in one or two matches should guarantee any player atleast 1 or two year of place irrespective of the performance.

5-6 sixes does not make you a player. He doesn’t have the talent or the skill or the mentality to become a consistent performer at any level.
 
If it were up to me, I would open the batting with Asif Ali and keep him there as an opener forever (unless it becomes visibly clear that he isn’t good enough). He is the kind of batsman who you wouldn’t mind taking a few balls to settle down, not Babar or Rizwan.

In the last 8 games he has played for Pakistan, Pakistan has won 7 of them. 2 of them were thanks to him for his World Cup heroics against NZ and AFG, and there was valuable contributions by him yesterday against West Indies, especially in the field.

Unfortunately you are not ever going to understand how this game functions so I guess it will not make sense to you.
 
Regardless of his form with the bat, he was sensational in the field, that was almost as big a surprise as his success with the bat during the world cup.
 
Asif Ali job is to finish a game or provide match winning contributions If he can do this 1 in 3 games I'd take that becouse we don't have anyone else baring iftikhar and maybe Khushdil who can do that specific job.
 
What a day of cricket - we have Jos Buttler dropping catches, while Asif Ali wins matches.

In the last year or so he has looked better than his terrible domestic stats suggest. We might be seeing Asif Ali 2.0.
 
You can afford to have Asif Ali in the T20 squad. I would not play him in ODI until he is more consistent.
 
One of the World leading sports manufactures have signed Asif Ali as an ambassador - guess he’s doing something right.
 
That's the job of Asif Ali to win you games in the last 5 overs we can't expect Asif Ali to win you games when having 10 overs to bat.
 
Asif Ali needs to be more consistent.He can hit sixes at will so he is ideal to come in play his shots in the last 5 overs.He has a few weaknesses which he needs to work on
 
Asif Ali has very good six hitting abilities but is extremely inconsistent. I'd keep him in T20s but it's important that we don't get hungover those 4 sixes he hit in the T20 WC because he can't do that every game. A good way for him to stay in the ODI team is to focus on keeping the ball on the ground and hit 4's as much as possible, dispatch the bad balls for 6's when necessary and when the situation demands it (towards the death overs) he should look to go for the Hail Mary approach and launch every ball out of the park. He needs some fine tuning, he can hit many strong international bowlers out the park.
 
He should only stick to T20s, ODI is not his format. He doesn't have the temperament to stay more than 20 balls

I don't need lectures from Pakistanis fans, especially from fans like you. I know more than everyone, and I have seen enough of Asif over the last 3.5 years to conclude that Asif is a fluke player.

Fluke players don’t win you 2 high intensity games with the entire world watching. Your odd correct predictions are the ones that are a fluke. You know nothing about the game in real.
 
Well he continues to be picked for Pakistan's white-ball squads despite some fairly average form of late.
