At least seven people were killed and more than 110 injured in an explosion on Tuesday morning at the Jamia Zuberia madressah in Peshawar's Dir Colony.

According to Lady Reading Hospital spokesperson Mohammad Asim, four of the deceased were students between the ages of 20 to 25.

"The blast took place in the madressah during a Quran class. Someone took a bag inside the seminary," Waqar Azim, a senior police official, told AFP.

Mohammad Ali Gandapur, another senior police official, confirmed the details. He said two teachers were among the wounded.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Mansoor Aman confirmed the explosion, saying that initial reports suggest an improvised explosive device (IED) was used in the explosion. "Five kgs of explosives were used in the blast."

The area has been cordoned off and police teams are collecting evidence, he added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The LRH spokesperson said that seven dead bodies and 70 injured have been brought to the facility.

He stated that the injured were being provided with immediate medical attention and the hospital's director was present at the emergency ward. He added that an emergency had also been declared at the medical facility.

According to reports, the injured have also been taken to Khyber Teaching Hospital, Hayatabad Medical Complex and Naseerullah Khan Babar Hospital. According to officials from the hospitals, 72 injured were taken to LRH, two each to KTH and HMC and 37 to Naseerullah Khan Babar Hospital.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra visited the site of the blast. Speaking to reporters, he said that the focus was on providing the injured the best possible treatment to increase their chances of recovery.

'Heart-rending, condemnable'

Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was "deeply saddened by the terrorist attack". "My condolences go to the victims' families and prayers for early recovery of the injured," he tweeted. "I want to assure my nation we will ensure the terrorists responsible for this cowardly barbaric attack are brought to justice as soon as possible."

Information Minister Shibli Faraz strongly condemned the blast, saying those who attack students gaining knowledge have no connection with humanity. "We will defeat the objectives of those attacking the stability of the country," he added.

Communications Minister Murad Saeed said whether it was the attack in APS or the blast at the madressah in Peshawar, it was the "nation's grief".

"Enemies have once again attacked the peace that we sacrificed thousands of lives for," he added.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif also condemned the blast, saying that those who targeted the madressah "could not be Muslims".

He said the incident reminded him of the 2014 Army Public School massacre in which 132 students and 17 school staff lost their lives and called for those responsible to be caught and punished.

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz termed it a "heart-rending" incident. "The damage inflicted to students is extremely saddening. There is no compensation for the mothers who have lost their children," she said.

PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal said he was "very sorry" to hear of the incident. "Terrorists, who had been defeated, are again hitting us because Imran Khan has pitched security apparatus against the opposition instead of terrorists. National Action Plan has been forgotten," he tweeted.

Last week, Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Ali Shahwani said that National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta) had issued a security alert for the public rallies of opposition parties in Quetta and Peshawar, saying there was “credible information” about possibility of subversive activities.

Last month, five people were killed and two others injured in a blast in the Akbarpura area of Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

District Police Officer (DPO) Najamal Hassan said that the explosion occurred in a market situated along the Kabul River. "Some people were collecting scrap material from the stones alongside the river. Some of the scrap included explosive material which detonated when they were weighing it."

At least seven people have died and more than 50 injured after an explosion during a class at a religious school in Pakistan, police have said.

Hospital officials say those killed in the attack, which took place in the northern city of Peshawar, were aged between 20 and 30.

Dozens of others were injured, including four under the age of 13.

No group has yet claimed responsibility. An investigation has been launched.

Earlier reports suggested four of the dead were children, but this has since been retracted.

The city of Peshawar, close to the Afghan border, has seen some of the worst of the violence during the Taliban insurgency in recent years.

Six years ago, gunmen stormed a military school in the city leaving more than 150 dead, including many children.

However, the number of attacks has greatly reduced in recent years.

What happened?

The blast took place at about 08:30 local time (03:30 GMT), police told the BBC.

About 60 people are understood to have been in the class at the religious school, known as a madrassa.

An eyewitness has told the police he saw a man enter the building with a bag of explosives shortly before the blast.

Images from inside the room show extensive damage.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Shafqat Malik told Pakistan's Express Tribune newspaper that 5kg (11lbs) of explosives were used in the attack.

Hospital officials told Reuters news agency that they had received dozens of injured, many with burns.

The AFP news agency has quoted police as saying that that two teachers were among the injured.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed "regret over the loss of precious lives", strongly condemning the blast.

Analysis: Ilyas Khan, BBC News, Islamabad

This attack, which follows a bombing in a neighbourhood in Quetta city on Sunday, is reminiscent of the era of widespread militant violence that hit the Pakistani mainland in the mid-2000s.

It is the first "soft" target hit by suspected militants in Peshawar city since the 2014 attack on the Army Public School (APS).

That attack prompted the Pakistani army to launch an operation to clear militant sanctuaries along the Pak-Afghan border. In November 2016, the army claimed the areas had been cleared of militants.

The latest incidents come amid reports suggesting the Taliban militants have been regrouping in the areas which had been cleared over the past year or so.

Various attacks have been reported, mainly targeting members of PTM, a Pashtun nationalist movement that has accused the military of protecting militants.

Some analysts fear that the current militant regrouping may be part of a plan not only to counter the PTM and the PDM, but also to influence the ongoing political process in Afghanistan at a time when the American forces are set to pull out from the region.

Islamist militants have long been seen by analysts as proxies of the security establishment, working to further its strategic aims in the region.

Ya Allah khair karein (ameen).

Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi rajioon.

May Allah grant their families patience but they are shaheed and never die.

India needs to stop targeting our children. The state needs to respond in some way. I dont advocate any innocents to be hurt across the border as we are better than our enemy but we need a response.

I hope the brass are looking to make some moves in the northern areas and co-ordinate with China. at the same time they could move into afghanistan and complete some further operations there.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon.
Extremely heart breaking news. May the martyrs rest in eternal peace and the survivors recover soon.

Why do these lowlives always target schools and Madrassas?

RIP to the innocent victims.

Is India behind this

Obviously... Their NSA Ajit Doval just yesterday made a statement we have to take the fight inside enemy's borders.

Inshallah Pakistan will repay in equal measure.

Heinous crime in the same location where the APS attach took place.

Condolences to the families.

Yes I read that. However how do we know it was the Indians. People on both sides make insane statements day in and day out. Anyway condolences to the families

It is a proven 'fact' that anything bad that happens in Pakistan is India's fault, and anything bad that happens in India is Pakistan's fault.

Must be amazing that there are no domestic miscreants in these two overpopulated countries whatsoever.

This type of response is what a typical Indian would say had the same tragedy occurred in India. Pakistanis and Indians exactly the same, but destined to be enemies till the end of time....

RIP to those who lost their lives, tragic indeed.

To your statement, its a big

Sindh, Punjab on high alert after Peshawar bomb blast

LAHORE/ KARACHI/ QUETTA: Authorities in Sindh, Punjab and Quetta heightened security on Tuesday hours after at least seven lives were lost in Peshawar bomb blast.

Punjab IG Inam Ghani directed field officers to increase security in red zone areas, and heightened security at checkpoints at inter-provincial and inter-district levels. He also ordered security officials to intensify search and intelligence operations across the province.

Sindh IG Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar also ordered heightened security at the provincial level. “Police patrolling, picketing and snap check should be made more effective,” he said, directing increased security at Masjid, Imaam Bargah and other key locations.

Quetta DIG Abdul Razzaque Cheema said patrolling and snap checking have been increased across the city while security has been tightened at all entry and exit points. The city police chief said the CTD and special branch were also put on high alert.

Three days ago, at least three people were killed and seven were injured when a remote-controlled bomb exploded in Quetta’s Hazarganji fruit market. The incident occurred as Pakistan Democratic Movement jalsa was taking place in the city.

It may be noted here that the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta) had issued a threat alert for Peshawar and Quetta on October 22. The authority said Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was planning to target religious and political parties in bomb attacks and suicide bombings.

According to Geo News, Nacta said that acting on such reports, on October 21, a terror plot for Balochistan was foiled. It said during the operation conducted in Qamar Din Karez, eight explosive devices were recovered. "This material was to be used for attacks in Quetta and Peshawar," Nacta said.

The Authority had recommended strict security measures in Quetta and Peshawar to avoid any untoward incident.

Exactly. Our own people are pious and righteous and would never even hurt an animal. It is the work of Hindus. No doubt!

Yes. The TTP and their splinter groups are Dovals proxies. He has openly threatened Pakistan in the last 24 hrs and suddenly we get this. Make no bones about it. this is a Muslim hating Pakistan hating regime who are now killing pakistani children.

Unfortunately we are now in a situation wheer the Indian state has openly said they will do this. We have evidence to show that the indian state is responsible for acts like this. We are not making flippant statements anymore. This will be a TTP group. If it is the case then India is behind it has they fund and train the TTP. This is not a secret anymore and Kulbushans arrest is just one part o the puzzle. Remember we destroyed the TTP's bases in FATA and got our hands on tons of incriminating evidence.

Your govt has openly said they will fight us on our soil. What does that mean? it means Dovals proxies..maybe you need to ask why your govt is hell bent on doing this..

First, the TTP hates India as such as it hates the Pakistani state. Even if we assume they are backed by India, you need to ask yourself these questions :

‘Why are our fellow Pakistanis willing to kill us for dollars?’

‘Why are Pakistanis willing to sell themselves for a few thousand dollars?’

The problem lies in Pakistanis. Why are they such savages and cruel individuals? It is our problem.

Also, please share the incriminating evidence found in FATA.

Exactly - that's why I called it a 'proven fact'.

So the TTP are involved eh? Aren't they Pakistani and Afghani citizens and residents? You have a problem on your hands if they are so easily swayed by the land they chose to partition from over seven decades ago.

Just have to be prepared to accept that while any terror attack in India will be successfully linked to Pakistan, when Indians do it in Pakistan, it gets brushed off by the international community as they see India as a giant market.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra visited the site of the blast. Speaking to reporters, he said that the focus was on providing the injured the best possible treatment to increase their chances of recovery.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police (IG) Sanaullah Abbasi while talking to reporters said that the police is trying to provide security as much as they can. "We are very saddened by this. We will ensure the security of the city," he said.

He added that the police would investigate "all dynamics".

'Cowardly, barbaric act'
President Arif Alvi said that blast was "shocking and saddening for all of us". He called for the "heinous criminal terrorists" to be apprehended and given exemplary punishment.

The United Nations Office in Pakistan said it was "appalled" by the attack. "We stand together in shock and grief after the heinous attack today on Jamia Zuberia madressah, Peshawar, where children take classes. We are appalled by this attack on children while they were in a place of prayer and learning," it said.

The attack was also condemned by Unicef, which said that "schools must never be targetted".

“Education is the fundamental right of every girl and boy, everywhere. Schools must never be targeted. They must remain safe learning environments at all times to protect the growth and healthy development of children, adolescents and young people,” said Unicef’s Pakistan Representative Aida Girma in a statement.

Information Minister Shibli Faraz strongly condemned the blast, saying those who attack students gaining knowledge have no connection with humanity. "We will defeat the objectives of those attacking the stability of the country," he added.

Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari called it a "cowardly act by terrorists". "Our fight against terrorists and their extremist ideologies has to be won decisively — we have no option," she tweeted.

In another tweet from his personal account, Nawaz called upon the government to "look at tears running on the bloody faces of injured children and immediately compensate for their pain".

MNA Mohsin Dawar condemned the blast, saying "neither our schools nor madressahs are safe".

"We have been warning against the regrouping of terrorists in our areas. All terrorist networks need to be dismantled fully."

Last week, Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Ali Shahwani said that National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta) had issued a security alert for the public rallies of opposition parties in Quetta and Peshawar, saying there was “credible information” about possibility of subversive activities.

This argument is no longer valid. The "world" is who? The five members of the security council. they have the evidence but four out of five of them don't want anything to happen to you so they look the other way. They are more concerned about their own hegemony and want to use you to block another member of their group in China.

As for providing funds to the afghan govt, they dont just provide funds. They provide training and they share intelligence. they also have numerous active programs with the NDS that include support for the BLA and the TTP. We also have evidence that India is supporting other splinter groups in afghanistan like ISIS. This is not a secret. And as Ive said before the Salala massacre proved the existent of armed death squads supported by the US and its intelligence allies which includes India. Although you werent part of the that massacre.

The targets chosen by terrorists in pakistan in the last deacde have benefited India. E.g the attack on the cricketers, the attack on our airborne early warning assets and attacks on troops in various locations. If you have any sense you can clearly see a pattern.

The bottom line is your govt is not hiding behind rhetoric anymore. They have openly said they will fight their enemies on their own soil. this means more terror for pakistani citizens.

Has the bomber been identified and named? He must be on cctv somewhere - surely you would release his details and picture so that members of the public with any information can contact the authorities?

Still nothing by the looks of it. Guess the authorities don’t want the identity of the bomber to be made public.

Still nothing by the looks of it. Guess the authorities don’t want the identity of the bomber to be made public.

The terrorists who attacked the srilankan bus were roaming everywhere like a paint ball game . Wonder they were ever identified? Pakistan has serious problem at home and needs to address that first.

We are talking about Peshawar, I don't know that much about the area but I doubt it has wall to wall cctv coverage as you were expecting.

In a case of corporal punishment in a Korangi 1½ madressah, a minor orphan child was beaten by a seminary teacher with a thorny stick only for not memorising his lessons, said Korangi-SSP Tauheed Rehman Memon on Thursday.

The seven-year-old boy, Maaz, received injuries on different parts of his body and serious injuries on his hands and arms. The teacher went missing after the incident.

The SSP took notice when a video of the child went viral on social media.

The police said that Qari Hanan beat the child with a thorny stick. The police were conducting raids for his arrest, the police spokesperson added.

I support a little bit of corporal punishment, but this kind of beating is terrible. The Madrassah teacher perhaps took the advantage of the fact that the kid is an orphan.

Itna larne ka shauk hain toh fight someone of your gender and size. Any random idiot can beat up a 7 year old child.
