Attaullah Tarar is a Pakistani politician currently serving as the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, a position he has held since March 11, 2024. He has also been a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since February 2024.

In December 2021, an FIR was lodged against Tarar after he, accompanied by a group of armed individuals, allegedly forcefully entered the home of Syed Mir Wasiq, a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate in the Khanewal by-election. Tarar was accused of threatening, intimidating, and harassing Wasiq's family, including women members.

Tarar has held several prominent positions within the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N), including serving as the Deputy Secretary-General and additional secretary. On May 24, 2022, Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz appointed him as the spokesperson for the Punjab Government on an honorary, non-remunerative basis. Shortly after, on May 30, 2022, he was appointed the Home Minister in Punjab's brief cabinet.

In June 2022, a viral video showing Tarar making an obscene gesture in the Punjab Assembly while holding the Constitution led to widespread criticism. Following this, he issued a public apology for his actions, which were deemed disrespectful.

On July 28, 2022, Tarar was appointed Special Assistant to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif with the status of a Federal Minister. Later, on December 16, 2022, he was designated as the Special Assistant on Interior and Legal Affairs.

After the May 9 riots, Tarar became a frequent media figure, regularly criticizing Imran Khan, founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). In 2022, Farah Khan, a close associate of Bushra Bibi, issued a legal notice demanding Tarar cease making defamatory remarks about her.

In the 2024 Pakistani general election, Tarar won the National Assembly seat from Constituency NA-127 Lahore-XI, securing 98,210 votes, defeating PTI-backed independent candidate Malik Zaheer Abbas, who garnered 82,230 votes, and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who received 15,005 votes. However, Malik Zaheer Abbas contested the election results, alleging manipulation of election documents.

On March 11, 2024, Tarar was inducted into Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's federal cabinet as Minister for Information and Broadcasting. On May 17, 2024, he was assigned the additional portfolio of National Heritage and Culture.

During Shehbaz Sharif's visit to Iran in May 2024, Tarar controversially acted as the Prime Minister's personal photographer at the airport, a move that sparked public criticism.

Tarar blasts K-P CM Gandapur for 'misleading' foreign media

Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has accused Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur of misleading the foreign media during today's briefing held in Peshawar.

He labelled Gandapur’s allegations as false, inflammatory, and detrimental to national unity, Express News reported.

Addressing the media, Tarar emphasised the importance of presenting facts to counter Gandapur’s claims. He criticised the PTI leader’s tendency to issue provocative statements, saying, "These baseless accusations are a hallmark of their divisive politics."

Tarar recounted past incidents involving PTI leaders, including their 2014 attack on PTV headquarters, which targeted law enforcement officers. He alleged that PTI leaders encourage violent protests but abandon their supporters when confronted by authorities.

Referring to Gandapur’s recent comment that the next PTI call for protests would not be peaceful, Atta Tarar questioned, "Were any of your previous protests peaceful?" He accused the party of fabricating narratives, including claims of mass casualties, and spreading fake images via artificial intelligence.

The minister also criticised former First Lady Bushra Bibi for allegedly inciting PTI workers, questioning why both she and Gandapur fled the scene during protests, leaving their supporters stranded.

Tarar highlighted PTI’s failure to manage provincial affairs, saying the party had failed politically, morally, and administratively. He reiterated the government's commitment to holding those responsible for the events of May 9 accountable, stating that the nation would never forget the actions of that day.

He further accused PTI of orchestrating propaganda campaigns against national institutions on social media.

The accusations came after Gandapur, in a conversation with foreign media, expressed his commitment to following all directives of PTI founder Imran Khan, including a call for civil disobedience.

Earlier today, addressing international media representatives at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar, Gandapur said the law-and-order situation in the country had deteriorated since the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) coalition took over, adding that state institutions were preoccupied with dismantling PTI instead of addressing national challenges.

“The situation during Imran Khan’s government was much better. But after PDM’s arrival, the focus shifted entirely to ending PTI."

“We are fully prepared to execute Khan’s decisions once details are provided. The struggle for constitutional rights, Khan’s release, and the restoration of our mandate will continue,” he added.

This guy is retard. An immoral loser that can't string sentence together, pretending that he is important. When the Generals go, you will have to run because some of us are unforgiving and you are part of the group that will be unforgiven until justice is served

I really dislike this guy, he is corrupt as it gets. I don’t think he could have any more brown on his nose if he tried. When the generals go, as mentioned above he will run to the UK and will become a mouse. Have friends who have seen him in person in london and he hasn’t muttered a word back.

Tarar reaffirms no NRO for Imran

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has responded to Imran Khan's call for a civil disobedience movement, saying the former prime minister's "childish and hostile" demands will not lead to any concession, including the much-debated National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

In a post on social media platform "X," Tarar accused Imran Khan of stubbornly pursuing a strategy that aims to harm both the country and its people, following the failure of his violent actions in the past. Tarrar said that Khan's latest move is another attempt to destabilise the nation.

Tarar slams KP govt for 'pervasive corruption'

Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar said on Sunday the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had only focused on corruption.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar said that a coalition government has been in place in the centre.

All political parties contested the elections on their respective manifestos and they made some promises to the people under their manifestos.

Punjab gave mandate to the PML-N, while KP and Sindh gave mandate to the PTI and PPP.

Castigating the performance of the PTI, he said 11 years had passed since the PTI formed government in KP. Under its rule, corruption and irregularities had increased in the province while mentioning that the provincial government was facing a financial deficit of Rs152 billion.

The minister said the PTI government had done nothing but promote corruption in the province. It had not taken any steps to reduce inflation in the province.

He drew parallels between the former Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar and KP chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur.

PTI's use of religion card for politics miserable, says Atta Tarar

Federal Minister Information Atta Tarar said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) use of the religion card for politics was condemnable.

Addressing a press conference alongside religious scholars in Lahore, the minister termed the £190 million case an “open-and-shut matter,” calling the recent court decision one of the most significant in Pakistan’s history. He criticised the establishment of the Asset Recovery Unit during PTI’s tenure, which he alleged was at the centre of this controversy.

“PTI is using religion to shield its wrongdoings. When they failed to provide legal defense in this case, they resorted to exploiting religious sentiments,” Tarar commented. He urged PTI leaders to “fear God” and refrain from dragging religion into political issues, calling the practice “deeply regrettable.”

The minister also questioned the legitimacy of religious teachings at Al-Qadir University, which he alleged was established through funds obtained improperly. “The cabinet approved a sealed envelope for this project, which was actually theft. The £190 million is the biggest heist in history,” Tarar said, adding that the founder of PTI has now been held accountable for bribery and embezzlement.

He dismissed claims of legal loopholes in the case, asserting that the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) confiscated the money and handed it over to the Pakistani government for public welfare. Tarar highlighted that former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had cleared himself during the NCA investigation.

“This is the same money that was used to construct a Rs 250 million house. Can PTI’s founder disclose the sources of his income?” the minister asked, challenging the party to explain its financial dealings.
