Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, while addressing a press conference in Islamabad, announced that a decision had been made to impose restrictions on the PTI; and that the government will refer the case to the Supreme Court.

He added that clear evidence was available to impose restrictions on the PTI, and the government would initiate proceedings to do the same.

Tarar highlighted recent efforts to create unrest in the country, referencing a film trailer titled "Saat Khoon Maaf", suggesting that certain individuals were “above the law.”

He criticised the PTI founder Imran Khan, labelling him as the worst leader who has established a precedent of imprisoning women and daughters.

Tarar also mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had proposed a Charter of Economy in the Parliament, but this gesture of wisdom was mistakenly perceived as a sign of weakness.

He emphasised that there is substantial evidence supporting the ban, and the government will proceed with filing a case in the top court to enforce this prohibition.

Treason case to be filed against Imran Khan, Arif Alvi, Qasim Suri

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar announced at a press conference in Islamabad that the government will file treason charges against former prime minister Imran Khan, former president Arif Alvi, and former deputy speaker Qasim Suri.

Tarar also announced the government's decision to impose restrictions on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), citing party’s alleged efforts to create unrest in the country.

He criticised Imran Khan, labelling him as the “worst leader” who has set a precedent of imprisoning women and daughters. The minister also mentioned Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's proposal of a Charter of Economy in Parliament, which, he said, was perceived by the opposition as a sign of weakness.

Tarar revealed that stringent actions would be taken against several prominent figures, including Alvi, Khan, and Suri. He indicated that a treason case under Article 6 of the Constitution would be lodged against them, with their passports and CNIC cards to be blocked and a parliamentary resolution to be introduced.

Lets call spade a spade!

The current govt. like many before it start as stooges of you know who. We know perfectly well who exactly wants PTI banned. At some stage when this government tries to stand on their own two feet, they will meet the same fate as every other ruling political entity Pakistan has had.

The political puppets keep changing, but there's only one puppeteer in Pakistan!

PTI says govt's 'illegal moves' driven by 'desperation'

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) accused the federal government of attempting to ban the party "out of desperation" as the Supreme Court had ruled in favour of PTI in the reserved seats case, putting it on the path to becoming the largest party in the National Assembly.

Speaking to Geo News, senior PTI leader Senator Ali Zafar said his party would not allow the decision's implementation "even for a second" as it is against the law of the land.

Zafar’s comments came in response to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar’s announcement that the government had decided to ban the PTI and file treason references against the party founder Imran Khan and former president Arif Alvi.

"As far as their announcement of banning PTI is concerned, I believe that they live in a world which exists outside the law. There's no provision in the law that allows the government to resort to such a move."

The senator further said: "This statement itself disqualifies him [Tarar], and even if they think about such an impossible thing, then the courts are present and so are we. We will not allow such a decision to be implemented even for a second."

Taking a jibe at the information minister, Zafar said he thinks the minister spoke out of "desperation" after the reserved seat's judgement.

"This is an illegal decision."

‘Ridiculous and desperate’: Lawyers, journalists, politicians react to govt’s decision to ban PTI

Speaking to Dawn.com, lawyer and politician Moiz Jaferii said a political party could not be banned other than through a reference to the apex court.

“The declaration by a federal government sending such a recommendation to the SC must explain how the particular party concerned is operating in a manner prejudicial to the sovereignty or integrity of Pakistan. This must be done within 15 days and the SC then gets to decide whether this is in fact the case,” he explained.

Jaferii remarked that a party could not just be banned, terming the government’s move “ridiculous and desperate posturing by a regime exposed day by day for its lack of legitimacy and popular appeal”.

“If the party is banned, anyone appearing on its ticket would lose the right to represent members in parliament and be disqualified under section 213 of the Election Act 2017,” he added.

Lawyer Mirza Moiz Baig also said that Article 17 of the Constitution provided that the government may declare a political party to be working against the integrity or sovereignty of Pakistan.

“Nonetheless, in the event that the government makes such a declaration, it is obliged to refer a reference to the SC within 15 days of such declaration,” he said, adding that the SC’s decision in this respect was final and binding.

Section 212 of the Elections Act also supports this view, Baig pointed out.

“While Section 213 of the Elections Act provides that the parliamentarians of a banned political party shall be disqualified for the remaining term of the assembly, Section 213 would only trigger after the SC upholds the government’s declaration,” he added.

Barrister Asad Rahim remarked that banning a country’s political party was akin to banning the will of its people. “There can be no starker illustration of a regime without a mandate than this wild and desperate move,” he told Dawn.com.

“Days after Pakistan’s elected representatives were returned their rightful strength in the assembly — that too when not counting for mass rigging — the unelected centre has hit the panic button.

“An act like this will destroy what’s left of democracy, just as it did when the Bhutto regime moved to dissolve the NAP — the largest party in two of four provinces. The current iteration is even more ridiculous, given that the PTI has won the most seats in the general election,” the lawyer highlighted.

He added that the government’s decision was a “fraud on the Constitution”, “betrayal of the parliamentary system” and “an insult to the popular will”.

Lawyer Jibran Nasir said that the pursuit of seeking a ban on the PTI “not only shows how weak the PML-N is but how desperate and frustrated the establishment has become”.

“Neither the establishment could fool the voters to support the PML-N over PTI with propaganda nor could it terrorise its core members and workers to leave PTI through raids, arrests, abductions and torture,” he wrote in a post on X.

Ban a party, the only way to stay in power.

Instead of buying Gucci scarfs and hats, they could’ve actually won the people over with more tubs of biryani.

Imran has himself tarnished his legacy by committing state treason and thereby cheating the innocent people of Pakistan at their toughest time. A shameful fall from grace for a great cricketer who at one point seemed destined for political greatness.

How can govt ban a political party?
Shouldn't that authority lie with the Election Commission?

Why are you commenting on things you have no idea about. Stick to Modi and the fascists

So a govt led by puppets of a General hated by PKs is planning a party that has the backing of 80% of PKs and that too without a symbol and it's leader in jail. This is the last desperate throw of the dice by a criminal mafia.

This week, the Govt will try to ban PTI altogether and frame a charge of treason on them. If these charges are to be proven, Article 6 will be implemented where Imran would be labelled as a traitor and could end up being hanged to death.

Now whether Imran Khan is a traitor or not, will depend on if he has violated the constitution.

The constitution was broken multiple times when the PDM government failed to hold elections on time, was anyone hanged for that?

Well, IK did violate the constitution. Every entity in Pakistan violated its laws last year. But, I was under the impression that establishment will keep IK alive just as leverage to keep Sharif, Bhutto from getting out of their control.

Humans rights have been smashed, judges have been threatened, elections were never held and when they were held they were not free and fair, journalists were killed and others locked up. So when are Munir, NS and Billo going to get their day in court.

As a RSS supporter and a true Sanghi, I would not want Imran to be in power, precisely because he will be the last person to betray Pakistan. He is an enemy for me, but an enemy worthy of respect. It is a shame that traitors of Pakistan are banning his party for being anti Pakistan.

That's what I also feel about Modi. He may not be the best for Pakistan but for India he has been the best option despite his shortcomings.

It's absolute paramount for every nation state to have a leader that has the best and only best interest for its nation.

This fake and illegal govt wants to ban PTI. What a joke.

The title should be ‘The Mafia Boots’ wants to ban PTI. Muneera mistri being the ringleader.

Munir and PML-N know they can’t keep him in jail for much longer.

All the cases put on him are being put in the bin, they’re more worried about Khan getting out of jail than the country’s current state of affairs.

Hopefully, I’ll be alive to see the demise of PML-N, PPP and the corrupt establishment.

Chairman, other leadership of PPP opposes govt decision to ban PTI

The Senior leadership of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) voiced their opposition against the federal government’s decision to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), ARY News reported on Monday.

In a statement, the PPP leader Raza Rabbani stressed that banning a political party goes against the principles of democracy and urged the federal government to avoid such actions.

Rabbani highlighted that the country is already grappling with severe economic and political instability. He warned that the government’s move to ban PTI would only worsen the ongoing political chaos and negatively impact the federal.

He suggested that the government should instead focus on addressing the rising trends of terrorism.

Supporting this view, senior PPP leader Farhatullah Babar also criticized the idea of banning a political party.

On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Babar stated that discussing a ban on a political party or prosecuting a political leader for treason is futile, intolerable, and a recipe for political crisis.

Fazalur Rehman reacts to govt’s decision to ban PTI

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazalur Rehman reacted to the federal government’s decision to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), ARY News reported.

In a statement issued here, Maulana Fazalur Rehman said that the use of force against political forces is not a solution to the problems. “The use of force will only increase political instability,” he added.

The JUI chief said that if all institutions work within their respective constitutional limits, Pakistan can be put back on track. Maulana Fazalur Rehman that if ‘powerful elements’ realise the limits, it would be better for the country.

The JUI-F chief said that the current ‘hybrid system’ has failed to bear fruitful results and the only solution to all problems lies in holding fresh transparent elections.

The PPP are total munafiqs. They will say this here and then give full support to the Establishment and the fellow puppets to go ahead. In the West, Billo and these criminals present themselves as moderate Liberals but we have seen these munafiqs for what they are.

Ban on political party will be concern for us, says US after Pakistan decides to ban PTI

The United States administration has stated that the Pakistani government’s decision to ban the PTI was a complex political process but added that it would be concerned if a political party were banned.

“Our understanding is this is the beginning of what would be a complete complex political process, but certainly banning of a political party is something that would be a great concern to us,” US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said at a press briefing on Monday.

He was asked about the US administration’s reaction to the federal government’s decision to move a case in the apex court to ban Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, days after twin court decisions that favoured the former leader.

Former prime minister Imran Khan and his PTI got major relief last week when an Islamabad judge overturned his illegal marriage conviction while the top court awarded the former ruling party more parliamentary seats.

Both cases were considered a major blow to the coalition government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Shari as many believed the decision would end the treasury benches majority in the National Assembly.

In response to another question, Miller said: “We support the peaceful upholding of constitutional democratic principles including respect for human rights and freedom of expression. We support democratic processes in broader princes, including the rule of law and equal justice under the law.

He went on to add that the administration would monitor the court decisions.

“As those internal processes continue to play out we will monitor these decisions any further decisions by the courts.”

PTI condemns govt's decision to ban former ruling party

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders on Monday condemned the federal government’s decision to ban the Imran Khan-founded party.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali and senior leaders Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz held a press conference in Islamabad.

Barrister Gohar Ali stated, “The Form 47 government aims to divert attention from specific issues and is attempting to hinder our specific seats.”

The PTI chairman said that today's press conference was held to divert attention from inflation. They condemn the decision to impose a ban on PTI, as the Supreme Court has recognised PTI's status.

PTI Secretary General and Opposition Leader in National Assembly Omar Ayub said, "First of all, the Supreme Court declared PTI as a party. The Supreme Court stated that PTI was and is a political party. Today's press conference reflects their wishes. This Form 47 government is a minority government. We demand from PPP and MQM to come out in the open and state whether they support PML-N's statement."

Omar Ayub added, "They raised electricity rates, a wave of inflation is coming that the public cannot even imagine. All this is being done to divert the public's attention from these issues. These people want to bring the judiciary under their thumb. They blocked the road and protested against the Supreme Court's decision. If PTI had done this, our homes would have been demolished."

Omar Ayub further said, "In PDM-1, they took away the voting rights of overseas Pakistanis. This is the same government that claimed to meet the privatization target in its budget. Institutions worth Rs1 trillion are being sold for Rs30 billion. Where will the remaining Rs970 billion go?"

Shibli Faraz said, "The press conference by the puppet government's Information Minister is a case of a small mouth and big talk. Imposing a ban on PTI is not a child's play."

“The founder of PTI is the biggest popular leader in the country. The track record of the Muslim League (N) has been corruption and anti-state measures,” he added.

Gloves come off as govt loses patience with PTI

The federal government on Monday decided to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) — a former ruling party which remained in power in the Centre from 2018 to 2022 — for its alleged affinity to the ‘anti-state’ elements while also working out a reference to try the top brass, including its founder Imran Khan, for high treason under Article 6.

Besides these two decisions, the government led by the PML-N will also file a review petition in the Supreme Court in the reserved seats case which was decided by the full court in the favour of the PTI last week. The government will also take action against “a handful of overseas Pakistanis for anti-state activities”.

These decisions were announced by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar at a press conference on Monday, which also featured audio and video clips, showing PTI’s alleged involvement in ‘anti-state’ activities.

“This is a fact and on the record that the PTI has been involved in anti-state activities and to this end, the government and its allies have decided to initiate legal proceedings to ban the PTI under Article 17 of the Constitution, which empowers the federal government to ban any such party,” said the information minister.

In a bid to justify the ban, the minister alleged the PTI obtained funds to target state institutions on May 9, attempted to sabotage Pakistan’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), resettled militants in the country, and hired a lobbying firm to get a resolution passed in the US House of Representatives against Pakistan.

The minister said that in light of the cipher episode and the US resolution, the federal government believed there was “very credible evidence” present to have the PTI banned.

In allusion to a plan to resettle the TTP militants during the PTI government, the minister claimed that the PTI was giving shelter to militants on the one hand and attacking the army on the other.

Speaking about the prohibited funding case against the PTI, the minister alleged the former ruling party used prohibited funding to hire lobbying firms that worked to damage the integrity of the country. He claimed the Election Commission of Pakistan had given a verdict that the PTI had received prohibited funding, while also recalling how the PTI government used delaying tactics to prevent proceedings in the case during its tenure. He claimed it was on record that the PTI failed to justify and defend the funding allegedly received from Israeli and Indian-origin overseas persons.

The minister also referred to the controversial cipher, which was used by Imran Khan to “mislead the nation”.

“Even Ambassador Asad Majeed, the author of the cipher, said there was no threat to the country in the cipher, but the PTI leadership was hell-bent upon damaging the diplomatic relations of Pakistan,” he said. Mr Tarar said the former finance minister, Shaukat Tareen, reportedly told the then provincial finance ministers to write a letter to sabotage a deal between the government and the IMF.

Speaking about the May 9 violence, Mr Tarar said the entire family of the PTI founder was involved in the May 9 attacks, as three of his sisters were allegedly found outside the corps commander’s house in Lahore and his nephew was allegedly seen defiling the official uniforms. The workers were ordered to reach designated points for creating chaos, he said, adding the video and audio evidence were available to the government. “We have irrefutable evidence and strong grounds to ban the party,” he noted.

Article 6 proceedings

The presser also brought up the attempt to circumvent a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan in April 2022. At the time of the no-trust move, the PTI government chose to disband the National Assembly instead of taking the no-confidence vote. In light of that action, the minister said the ruling alliance had also decided to move a reference against the former premier, then-president Arif Alvi and then National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri. He said that this reference under Article 6 would be sent to the Supreme Court after the cabinet’s approval.

About the anti-state campaigns and conspiracies from abroad, he said a handful of overseas Pakistanis who collected funds to weaken Pakistan, did not represent the majority who had been contributing to the national economy by sending massive remittances. A resolution would be passed in the house to take action against such elements, he added.

The minister also criticised the reserved seats ruling and said the judgement created an impression that the relief given to the PTI was “uncalled for”.

“The PTI was not a party to the case, nor their members claimed to be members of the PTI; all of them joined the Sunni Itehad Council and submitted their affidavits,” he said while asserting that the Sunni Ittehad Council did not allow non-Muslim to be the members of the party which technically deprived the party of its minority seats.

“Keeping in view the legal loophole in this judgement, the government and its allies have decided to file a review petition,” he said.

“Whatever happens whether they hold (intra) party elections or not, or there is an Iddat case or any other thing such as the case of £190 million…the impression is that they are untouchables,” he added. “I want to respond to them in clear and unambiguous words: ‘no more’,” the minister said while ruling out any sort of progress of the country in the presence of the PTI.

The establishment had always decided that they will run down the country and burn everything but they will not allow IK back to power and now they have decided to eliminate him openly. They have even decided that if Trump comes to power and if IK is alive till then and if Trump orders IK's release, they will tell the US to get lost and not meddle in Pakistan's internal affairs. Awami National Party (ANP) President Aimal Wali Khan has voiced his opposition to the government's decision to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), despite political and ideological differences

"We oppose the ban on PTI. Our history shows that we have never supported undemocratic and dictatorial measures," Wali Khan lamented on Tuesday.

He recalled that the precedent for banning political parties in Pakistan was set by military dictator General Ayub Khan, he added that lessons from history are often ignored in the country.

It has emerged the PML-N-led government has not taken all coalition partners on board before announcing to ban PTI on Monday. Earlier, Central Secretary Information of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Shazia Marri, reacted to the decision to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), stating that PPP was not taken into confidence regarding this decision, adding that the party will discuss the government's decision internally.

ANP's leader criticised the shifting allegiances towards military leadership depending on political power. "In power, the army chief is treated like a father, but once out of office, the same figure is branded as a traitor," he remarked.

He further highlighted the irony in political slogans, stating, "'Respect the vote' is only chanted when out of power, but once in control, that 'vote' becomes 'boot'."

He drew parallels between the current government and PTI's actions between 2018 and 2022.

"The game and its referee remain unchanged; only the players have switched sides. Those who benefited from this dirty game yesterday are suffering today," he commented.

He also noted the cyclical nature of political power in Pakistan.

"Today's beneficiaries will be tomorrow's victims, who will once again raise hollow slogans of revolution and democracy when out of power."

Khan stated, rather ironically, "The military dictator who set the trend of imposing bans now sees his grandson's party facing a ban."

He reiterated that the ANP, valuing democratic traditions, cannot support any ban on political parties. "If a ban is to be imposed, it should be on the military's interference in politics," he concluded

No final decision yet on banning PTI: DPM Ishaq Dar

A final decision on banning the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has not been made yet, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said on Tuesday.

“The leadership will first review the matter and then consult our allies, but any decision on a ban will be made in accordance with the law and Constitution,” he told reporters in Lahore.

On Monday, the federal government decided to move a case in the apex court to ban PTI days after twin court decisions that favoured the former leader.

“We are going to ban the Tehreek-i-Insaf and we think that Article 17 of the Constitution allows the federal government to ban political parties and this matter will be sent to the Supreme Court,” Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said at a press conference in Islamabad.

The PML-N also filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against the reserved seats case decision. Tarar also announced that a reference under Article 6 (high treason) of the Constitution would be moved in the SC against Imran Khan, Arif Alvi, and Qasim Suri.

Many legal experts wondered about the government’s decision to ban PTI while some stated that the cabinet can take such a step by issuing a notification.

The deputy prime minister criticised the PTI, calling it a “foreign-funded party,” and said the decision to ban it would be made in consultation with allies.

While speaking about the Centre’s performance, Dar claimed that the incumbent government was not responsible for inflation and it was brought under control during former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s tenure.

Govt will consult allies to ban PTI: Khawaja Asif

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the government would consult with the allies to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

In a press conference in Sialkot, the federal minister said, "PTI's woman member declared that if there is no Khan, there is no Pakistan. This, he blamed, is the principle of their politics. For me, Pakistan is the most important."

The Pakistan Muslim League-N leader said that the PTI's activities reflect that it should be banned.

Regarding Article 6, Asif said, "The way they (PTI) dissolved the national assembly, Article 6 should be imposed on them."

Khawaja Asif said that no organisation is beyond the integrity of Pakistan, they go to foreign powers and persuade them to speak against Pakistan. What happened on May 9 was an attack on Pakistan, he asserted.

Murad says if PTI wants PPP’s support, it’ll have to behave like a political party

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that if Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf wants to seek political support of the Pakistan Peoples Party, it will have to evolve as a political party and behave like one.

The PPP had made its position clear on federal government’s decision to ban Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and reiterated it was not in favour of imposing ban on any political party but PTI would have to prove itself to be a political party, he said while talking to media persons at Pir-jo-Goth in Khairpur district on Tuesday after offering condolence over the death of Nazir Dhoki, media coordinator of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

“No other political party, except the PTI, refuses to engage in dialogues to resolve [contentious] issues,” he said.

He said that PTI itself was largely responsible for whatever it was facing today but the decision to ban the party had to be taken by the federal government and the judiciary. “Our party has already made it clear that its leadership has not been consulted on the matter,” he said.

He said in answer to a question at Rohri that his party would never support banning any political party but PTI would have to prove itself as a political party. No party, except PTI, had ever launched a movement against national institutions, he said.

“The responsibility for polluting political culture with frequent use of foul language falls squarely on the PTI’s shoulders,” he said.

“If PTI wants to seek political support of the PPP, it will have to evolve as a political party and behave like one,” he said.

Former Sindh CM Qaim Ali Shah, MNAs Khursheed Shah, Nafisa Shah, Javed Shah, provincial ministers Zia Lanjar, Nasir Shah and MPAs Halar Wassan and others also accompanied the chief minister.

Earlier, the chief minister chaired a meeting of administration officials at the residence of Sukkur Mayor Arsalan Shaikh and was briefed by deputy commissioner M.B. Dharejo on Muharram security plan and arrangements.

The CM was told that on the 10th of Muharram four major processions would be taken out. Of these, the largest one would be organised in Rohri in which over 70,000 to 80,000 mourners were expected to participate.

Another Ashura procession would be taken out in Sukkur City in which 60,000 to 70,000 mourners would participate and 783 policemen had been assigned duty to provide it security.

The chief minister visited 550-year-old Karbala Mola Imambargah in Rohri and chaired a meeting at Jacobabad which was attended by Larkana Commissioner Ghulam Mustafa Phul, DIG Nasir Aftab and DC Zahoor Marri.

‘Dry, wet test of Sukkur Barrage’s replaced gate on Friday’

Sindh irrigation secretary informed Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday that all gates of Sukkur Barrage had been opened fully to lower level of upstream pond in order to avoid further damage to the gates and facilitate ongoing repair work at gate No.44 and 47.

The secretary Zareef Khero told the chief minister during his visit to the barrage to inspect ongoing work on the replacement of gate No.44 and 47 that as a consequence, supply to all the canals off-taking from the left and right side of the barrage, including Nara, Rohri, Khairpur East, Khairpur West, Northern Dadu, Rice and North-Western canals, was to remain reduced until the restoration of the two gates.

He said that at gate No.47, plate joint welding work, bolt tightening, and wire rope setting were completed on July 16. On July 17th, the process of installation and connection with counterweight would be completed, on July 18th, rubber side ceiling, roller train insert, bottom stiffeners and bottom ceiling would be fitted and on July 19, dry tests and wet tests would be carried out, he said.

He recalled that the damage the gates was detected at 7:20 pm on June 20. The preliminary assessment revealed that gate No.44 had developed a bent but was intact in full section (geometry), while gate No.47 was substantially damaged, he said.

He said that he and the irrigation minister, along with a team of chief engineers, reached the site at 4.00 am on June 21. The standard operating procedures for the movement of Caisson gate at gate No.44 in the river required a pond level of 195.0 to 197.0 with a discharge of less than 125,000 cusecs upstream barrage, he said.

The secretary said that as of Tuesday, the discharge upstream was 133,400 cusecs but after seven days, it would rise to 145,000 cusecs. Consequently, the pond level had increased above today’s pond level that was 198.4, he said.

He said the movement of the Caisson gate at these discharges and levels would be quite risky for installation and removal of the gate. Lowering the pond level to 197 would again cause the right bank canals to suffer more, he said.

Moreover, the removal of the Caisson gate, which was experienced at gate No.36, was more challenging. Therefore, vigilant monitoring of gate No.44 was important, he said.

No final decision yet on banning PTI, says law minister

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has clarified that there was no final decision on banning former prime minister Imran Khan’s PTI, citing that coalition partners would be consulted before any such step.

“This is a suggestion and further discussion will be held with coalition partners. Later, people on the legal side will be asked approached,” he said while appearing on Spotlight with Munizae Jahangir which was aired on Aaj News on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also spoke on the same wavelength.

This came after Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that the federal government would approach the Supreme Court to ban the PTI because of the May 9 events and foreign funding case.

Tarar revealed that such a suggestion had also come when the foreign funding case decision was announced, however, the government showed restraint and delayed it.

He reiterated that Article 17 (freedom of association) of the Constitution and Section 212 of the Election Act allowed the government to make such decisions.

PPP will oppose decision to ban PTI: Kaira

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Wednesday that his party will oppose the decision to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Expressing his thoughts, Kaira said: “The political parties can only be defeated in the political arena. The political parties that are embracing fascism can be dealt with in a democratic way.”

“My party [PPP] will show resistance in line with the ban on the PTI,” he said.

Kaira said: “It doesn’t mean that the government has taken the decision to ban the PTI. The reference to ban the PTI will be sent to the court, and the bench will be former.”

PML-N leaders taken by surprise over PTI ban announcement: Fawad Chaudhry

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday said that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders were taken by surprise after the government announced decision to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Speaking at ARY News programme “The Reporter,” he said that the government will have to state reasons to justify the ban on the Imran Khan-founded party.

“Even PML-N leaders were surprised by the announcement of banning the PTI,” he said, adding that the country’s politics cannot move forward without the PTI founder.

Responding to a question regarding the political environment of Pakistan, he said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz wished to finish the PTI and its founder. However, the former ruling party managed to secure majority in the election, he added.

For Fawad Chaudhry, the country’s politics cannot move forward without Imran Khan as majority of Pakistanis stand with the former prime minister.

However, he criticised the PTI’s strategy which, according to him, has not helped in releasing Khan from jail.

“My criticism is not on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leadership, but on strategy. PTI is a big party but the strategy adopted is not right,” he added.

No one can ban PTI, says Omar Ayub

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan has stated that no one could ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), reaffirming the Supreme Court's stance that PTI is a political party and will remain so.

Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail on Thursday, Ayub and other PTI leaders shared insights from their recent meeting with the incarcerated PTI founder, Imran Khan.

"The fight for true freedom will continue," Ayub quoted the founder.

He criticised the government, calling its members “naïve”. "You imprisoned our leader, but our party remains unbroken," he asserted.

Ayub highlighted the Supreme Court's declaration that PTI’s political status is untouchable.

He also addressed the nation's economic challenges, noting the rising prices of gas, petrol, flour, lentils, and sugar.

He accused the current administration of profiting from wheat imports during Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure and hinted at upcoming privatisation deals aimed at generating substantial revenue.

"SIFC plans to earn only Rs30 billion through privatisation, while the actual value exceeds Rs1,000 billion," he said.

He also mentioned that the PTI founder had ordered organisational restructuring.

Ayub expressed concerns about jail conditions, alleging interference from intelligence officials during their meeting.

"We will summon Islamabad’s in-charge, Punjab’s IG, the interior secretary, and Adiala Jail's superintendent," Ayub declared.

He condemned the involvement of secret agencies in political affairs, urging them to focus on counter-terrorism instead.

Ayub insisted, "This government is out of control; we will get our seats back. The Chief Election Commissioner and commissioners should resign immediately and face Article 6 charges."

He confirmed plans for a rally in Islamabad.

PTI leader Rauf Hassan warned that any adverse moves against PTI would harm Pakistan, vowing to defend the party's position.

The PPP secretary general on Thursday said that the party has decided to “stand with the federal cabinet’s decisions”, days after a few senior party members decried the government’s announcement to ban the PTI

Earlier this week, the federal government announced that it had decided to ban the party and seek Article 6 proceedings against its founder Imran Khan, ex-president Dr Arif Alvi, and former National Assembly (NA) deputy speaker Qasim Suri.

The move appeared to be an attempt to prevent the PTI from becoming the single largest party in the NA as the announcement was made on the heels of relief given to the party by the top court in the case of the reserved seats as well as to the party chief in the Iddat case.

The announcement attracted flak from across the political spectrum, with stakeholders from different parties terming the move “undemocratic.” Several senior PPP leaders also opposed the move, with former senators Raza Rabbani and Farhatullah Babar openly criticising the idea.

On the other hand, PPP stalwart Khursheed Shah said the party’s leadership — despite being part of the ruling coalition — was not taken on board regarding the decision.

Later, however, the PPP distanced itself from the statements of its senior members, terming them “personal opinions”, highlighting that the issue had not been discussed at any level within the party.

On Thursday, PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bokhari once again clarified the party’s stance, solidifying its status as the government’s ally.

“PPP stands with the government and will endorse the decisions of the federal cabinet,” Bokhari told Dawn.com over the phone.

“We are allies of the federal government, and even if differences of opinion emerged within the party on a particular issue, it was treated as their own viewpoint and has nothing to do with the party’s policies.”

Tarar backs appointment of retired judges, move to ban PTI

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) isn't coming slow on its move to slap a ban on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as another federal minister came in support of the government's potential move.

Turning up the political heat, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar on Thursday put his weight behind the government's plan to ban the Imran Khan-founded party.

Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, addressing a press conference in Islamabad on July 15, announced the PML-N-led government's decision to ban the former ruling party as well as file references against former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-president Arif Alvi for treason under Article 6 for their involvement in the dissolution of the National Assembly in April 2022.

Expressing his opinion in a statement today, the federal minister also defended the Judicial Commission of Pakistan's (JCP) proposal to appoint retired jurists in the Supreme Court as ad hoc judges, saying that the country's Constitution allows such appointments.

The issue of invoking Article 6 against the PTI leaders could be brought before the Parliament House for a debate by lawmakers, he added.

"There is a genuine case of Article 6 against the PTI leaders as the Constitution was violated by dissolving the [National] Assembly in the presence of a no-confidence motion."

The decision to ban the PTI, the law minister said, was not taken last year only to maintain the political environment in the country.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, who chairs the JCP, had nominated four judges — Justice (retd) Mushir Alam, Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqir, Justice (retd) Mazhar Alam Miankhel, and Justice (retd) Sardar Tariq Masood — as ad hoc judges in the Supreme Court. However, two judges, Justice Mushir and Justice Baqir, have so far declined the offer.

Talking to Geo News today, Justice (retd) Baqar said he was deciding against becoming an ad hoc judge due to "personal reasons".

However, he mentioned that the appointment of ad hoc judges to the apex court is in line with the law and that criticism is "baseless".

Meanwhile, Justice (retd) Alam's letter addressed to the JCP chairman, states: "After careful deliberation, under present circumstances, it is with a heavy heart that I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept this esteemed appointment."

The JCP, chaired by CJP Isa, is set to meet tomorrow (Friday) to consider the appointment of four retired apex court judges, according to the official note which describes the high pendency of cases as the reason for the appointment of ad hoc judges.

However, the PTI termed the move as "dishonesty," as the party's chairman Gohar Ali Khan, in a statement on X on July 16 said: "There is a genuine apprehension that the move is aimed at PTI's reserved seats judgement and its standing as a party."

Earlier today, PTI Secretary-General Omar Ayub Khan, in conversation with journalists in Islamabad, also said that hiring three or four judges won't address the issue of thousands of pending cases.

"The motive behind the move is to appoint 'like-minded' judges to the Supreme Court. Political workers and the lawyers' fraternity reject the move," Ayub, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, said.

In the same statement, Law Minister Tarar dismissed reports about an extension in the tenure of CJP Isa, saying that the debate about the extension of the tenure of government employees arose because of the high pension bill.

He further said that in late April or early May, there was a meeting with the Chief Justice regarding the Judicial Commission in which he said that he was not interested in extending the tenure.

Govt announced PTI ban move 'pre-maturely', admits defence minister

Amid facing opposition from friends and foes alike, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has admitted that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government announced the move to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in haste.

“Yes, you can say that we declared this prematurely and consultation with the allies [in this regard] is mandatory,” the federal minister said while speaking on the Geo News programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath on Thursday.

In a surprise announcement on Monday, Federal Information Minister Ataullah Tarar announced that the federal government had decided to impose a ban on the PTI over its alleged involvement in anti-state activities and try former prime minister Imran Khan, ex-president Arif Alvi and then deputy speaker Qasim Suri under Article 6 (high treason) for dissolving National Assembly in April 2022.

Besides the PTI, other political parties including leaders belonging to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) — the PML-N’s key ally in the Centre, — opposed the move and termed it against the democratic norms.

In today’s show, Asif said any decision regarding imposing a ban on the PTI would be taken in line with the consensus among the allies. “We will take this major step after creating broad consensus InshaAllah.”

When asked about the perception that the incumbent rulers are playing the role of facilitator in the institutions alleged fight against jailed PTI founder Imran Khan, the defence minister rejected the perception saying: “This is about Pakistan”.

“Since their [PTI] ouster from power and the attitude they adopted, the PTI has become an existential threat to the country,” the senior PML-N leader said, adding that the embattled party receiving all-out support from the US “either diplomatic or legislative”.

He also claimed that the PTI hired lobbyists in the US “who have generated garnered [them] support of different lobbies”.

Against the backdrop of the federal government’s criticism of the Supreme Court’s ruling declaring the PTI eligible for the reserved seats for minorities and women, Asif expressed fears about a “constitutional meltdown” in the country.

“I don’t have any information [but] this is just my gut feeling that constitutional breakdown is about to happen.. sooner or later [but] it is going to happen,” he said without elaborating further.

However, he clarified that he is not discussing the possibility of martial law being imposed in the country.

“There should be a political solution to political problems,” he said.

Bid to break, ban PTI will fail, says Omar Ayub

The PTI on Thursday accused intelligence agencies of interfering in the parliamentarians’ affairs, but expressed the confidence that no one could break and ban the opposition party.

Recalling that the Supreme Court had declared PTI a political party, the opposition leadership cautioned the powers that be against considering invoking Article 6 against Imran Khan and banning the PTI.

Talking to journalists outside Adiala Jail after meeting Imran Khan, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan said the former prime minister had made it clear that PTI would continue its struggle for haqeeqi azadi (real freedom).

He asked the government to focus on public-related issues, such as high inflation, rather than trying to curb the PTI.

Mr Ayub alleged that the caretaker government had made money from wheat import and the current ruling elite had been eying on making gains from privatisation.

He accused the Special Investment Facilitation Council of planning to generate Rs30 billion by privatising the national assets worth over Rs1,000bn.

He alleged that intelligence officials had been interfering during the party leaders’ meeting with Imran Khan and asked them to focus on counterterrorism efforts.

He threatened that the Islamabad and Punjab police, interior secretary and superintendent of Adiala Jail may be summoned to the privilege committee of parliament.

In reply to a question, he said Article 6 should be invoked against the chief election commissioner instead of Imran Khan.

PTI’s Central Information Secretary Raoof Hasan warned that any adverse action against the party would cause damage to the country.

He said PTI would hold a public meeting in the federal capital.

Legal team’s presser

The legal team of PTI at a press conference urged retired judges to turn down offers of becoming ad hoc judges of the Supreme Court.

They said that if it was necessary to appoint ad hoc judges, such a decision should be taken by the incoming chief justice and not the outgoing CJP.

Advocate Shoaib Shaheen claimed that it was illegal to recruit ad hoc judges as appointments can only be made in the absence/unavailability of permanent judges.

Referring to reports that the SC decision regarding reserved seats would not be implemented, he wondered if such a step would not be considered as contempt of court.

Advocate Ishtiaq A. Khan demanded that the upcoming meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan be postponed.

PTI-SIC meeting

The PTI and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) rejected the government’s plan to ban PTI and initiate proceedings against Imran Khan under Article 6.

They demanded Article 6 should be invoked against those who had been flouting the Constitution and breaking laws for the past two years.

During a joint meeting of their respective parliamentary parties, the PTI and SIC condemned the “ill-treatment” of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi while he was being shifted to Lahore.

The participants rejected the appointment of ad hoc judges and alleged that the move was aimed at destroying the real structure of the SC in order to create an artificial numerical superiority of an individual.

They stated that the detention of PTI MNAs Moazzam Jatoi and Sahibzada Amir Sultan was a violation of parliamentary traditions, as lawmakers could not be arrested without the permission of the National Assembly speaker.

Later, Mr Ayub moved a privilege motion in the National Assembly claiming that on July 4 he, along with Shibli Faraz, Junaid Akbar and other parliamentarians went to Adiala Jail, but an ASI asked them to leave.

He alleged that the privilege of parliamentarian was breached on the directions of the ISI sector commander of Rawalpindi/Islamabad.

Banning political parties an internal issue of Pakistan: FO

The Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch on Friday emphasised that countries should refrain from commenting on Pakistan's domestic matters, asserting that Islamabad can handle its internal issues independently.

"Banning political parties is an internal issue of Pakistan," said Mumtaz during a media briefing.

Addressing the recent attack on Bannu Cantt by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Mumtaz revealed that Pakistan has expressed its serious concerns to the Afghan interim government.

The FO spokesperson expressed alarm over the use of Afghan territory for terrorism against Pakistan and urged the Afghan government to take immediate and effective action against the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group.

She said that Pakistan has shared intelligence with Afghanistan regarding terrorist groups and has maintained continuous communication with Afghan authorities.

Concerning immigration, Mumtaz clarified that Pakistan's immigration laws are strict, with daily deportations of illegal Afghan residents. "Currently, 44,000 Afghan citizens are awaiting relocation," she added.

While the spokesperson was not aware of Malala Yousafzai’s recent statements on this issue, she expressed hope that Yousafzai would advocate for the expedited relocation of these refugees.

The FO condemned the attack on a Shia mosque in Muscat on Muharram 9, describing it as a barbaric act of terrorism.

Pakistan expressed solidarity with the victims and highlighted the importance of collective action against terrorism.

Additionally, Pakistan condemned the Israeli attacks on Palestinian refugee camps, particularly the assault on Khan Younis camp, which resulted in the deaths of 19 Palestinians, calling it a violation of United Nations regulations.

Islamabad also condemned the arrests of participants in the Muharram processions in Srinagar and called for the immediate release of the detained mourners, reaffirming its political and moral support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

K-P Assembly passes resolution for Imran Khan's release, opposes plan to ban PTI

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly passed resolutions against a possible ban on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and in support of Imran Khan’s release from jail.

The assembly session, chaired by Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, saw Law Minister Aftab Alam presenting a resolution regarding the release of PTI founder Imran Khan.

The resolution cited a report from the United Nations General Assembly's Human Rights Committee, stating that the cases against Imran Khan and his associates violate laws.

The K-P Assembly urged that Imran Khan be released in light of the UN report.

Subsequently, the resolution was passed.

Later, Provincial Law Minister Aftab Alam presented another resolution concerning the potential ban on PTI.

The resolution highlighted that the recent Supreme Court decision acknowledged PTI as the largest party in the country and called for PTI to be allocated specific seats accordingly.

The resolution further stated that despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, the federal cabinet is formulating a narrative to ban PTI.

It argued that such a ban would violate Article 17 of the Constitution, which guarantees the freedom to form political parties. The PTI, standing with the Constitution, pledged to challenge any such ban both judicially and publicly.

The K-P Assembly passed the resolution against the PTI ban following these discussions.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) decided on Friday to hold further consultations regarding the ban on Imran Khan-founded PTI and actions under Article 6 against Imran Khan, Arif Alvi, and Qasim Suri, ARY News reported, citing sources.

A meeting was held between the ruling coalition – PML-N and PPP – to discuss administrative matters in Punjab, the current political situation, and the government’s proposal to ban PTI.

The PML-N delegation included National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Rana Sanaullah.

The PPP delegation comprised of Sherry Rehman, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, and Nadeem Afzal Chan. Meanwhile, the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) and other officials were also present at the meeting.

Sources told ARY News that the PPP delegation emphasised the party’s commitment to democratic processes and reviews.

During the meeting, it was decided that further consultations would be held regarding the ban on PTI. It was also agreed that the parties will reconvene after consulting with their leadership to finalise their decisions.

The federal government had announced its plans to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and seek Article 6 proceedings against its founder Imran Khan, ex-president Dr Arif Alvi, and former deputy NA speaker Qasim Suri.

The announcement came following the relief given to the party by the top court in the reserved seats case as well as to the party founder Imran Khan in the Iddat case.

Addressing a presser, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the country could not move forward with the Imran Khan-founded party’s existence.

“In view of the foreign funding case, May 9 riots, and the cipher case as well as the resolution passed in the US, we believe that there is credible evidence present to have the PTI banned,” he said.

Cabinet set to decide on PTI ban on Tuesday

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a federal cabinet meeting for tomorrow to discuss the potential ban on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Express News reported.

Sources indicate that the cabinet will seek approval for the ban and deliberate on the current political climate in the country.

Recently, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ataullah Tarar announced in a press conference that the federal government plans to impose a ban on PTI.

He stated that legal action under Constitution's Article 6 would be pursued against former President Arif Alvi, PTI founder Imran Khan, and Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri.

Tarar added that the cabinet's approval would lead to a reference being sent to the Supreme Court.

Measures such as blocking their passports and identity cards and passing a parliamentary resolution will also be considered, with actions being carried out within the bounds of the constitution and law.

Govt has ‘made up its mind’ on PTI ban: Tarar

In the wake of what is being seen by many as an admission of guilt by Imran Khan, the government’s efforts to ban the opposition PTI from the political mainstream seem to be gathering steam.

A day earlier, media reports said the PTI founder had, while speaking to journalists at Adiala jail, acknowledged that he had called for a protest outside the GHQ if he was arrested.

While the party and his legal team have been at pains to clarify that he meant a “peaceful protest”, PTI’s opponents have pounced on the statement, citing it as a vindication of their misgivings about the party.

Reacting to the ‘admission’, Information Minister Atta Tarar said the government had decided, in principle, to place a ban on the PTI. “We have principally decided to ban PTI, but waiting for a broader consensus (among ruling allies) to impose the ban,” he said during an appearance on Geo News.

Earlier, the government’s stance had been that consultations were underway among the ruling allies regarding the decision to ban the opposition party.

But now, even the PPP seems to have been swayed, approaching the Supreme Court to challenge the July 12 verdict that awarded reserved seats to the PTI and recognised it as a parliamentary party.

Review petition

The PPP, which instituted the review petition through senior counsel Farooq H. Naek, seems specifically aggrieved with the SC’s interpretation within the meaning of Article 51(d)(e) as well as Article 106 that the PTI “was and is” a political party that secured or won general seats in the national and provincial assemblies in the Feb 8 general election.

This is the third such petition, as earlier the PML-N on July 15 moved the SC seeking review of the order contending that the full bench, instead of interpreting the Constitution, entered into the domain of legislation.

Likewise, three women members elected on the reserved seats from PML-N had also filed review petitions.

The PPPP reiterated that PTI neither filed any case before the ECP, nor before Peshawar High Court (PHC), or before the Supreme Court, hence it is not entitled to any relief, let alone a relief which was not even pleaded.

Moreover, it added, the short order has not noted that 80 MNAs had filed their nomination papers as independent candidates and then as independent candidates joined the SIC. “None has even come forward to state otherwise,” it pointed out, arguing that the assumption in the short order under review that the MNAs were PTI candidates was liable to be reviewed.

According to the July 12 short order, 41 returned candidates were given a 15-day period to join any political party even though they did not show affiliation with PTI even in one of the columns of the list submitted by the ECP.

This novel procedure is in stark contradiction to the Constitution, the Elections Act, 2017 and the settled jurisprudence, the petition contended.

The petition also said the short order was against Rule 92 (6) of the Election Rules, 2017, which state once an independent candidate joined a political party, there was no option to recall or cancel the same.

Also, the short order was against the settled principles of interpretation of the Constitution since by carving out a procedure that was not provided under the Constitution, the short order might have gone into the realm of creating and not just interpreting the constitution that was against the SC jurisprudence, the petition said.

Logic behind PPP review

The submission of the review petition came as a surprise for many, since it was just three days ago that the PPP had counseled the PML-N to reconsider its decision to move the SC for a review, since its leadership believed that the government might not get any relief in the case.

A key partner in the ruling coalition, the PPP’s suggestion came during a meeting held at the Presidency on July 19, in the backdrop of complaints that the ruling PML-N had not taken them on board regarding its plan to deal with the PTI.

A senior PPP leader privy to developments told Dawn on condition of anonymity that opinions within the party were divided over the issue of filing the review petition.

The leader said their top brass had allowed Mr Naek to file the petition after a formal request by the PML-N in this regard, which wanted the PPP to become party to the case since it was part of the ruling coalition.

Moreover, the source said, those in support of moving the petition were of the view that the PPP should do so to ensure parliament’s supremacy and send a message to other institutions to stay within their constitutional limits.

The PPP leader said that although the party had opposed the idea of moving the review petition in the meeting at the Presidency, they had also assured the PML-N that they would support them if it decided to go ahead.

The source said PML-N leaders had told them that they were not too hopeful of a favourable decision from the apex court, but said that they were doing it only to bring their point on the record.

As a neutral watching this politics unfold from across the border, I don't understand one thing.

Why is Pakistan doing this with a World Cup winning captain?

It will never happen in India even if the government & the individual's political views are poles apart.

Federal cabinet ‘defers’ decision to ban PTI

According to sources, the government will consult with the Pakistan People’s Party and other coalition parties before making a decision.

Sources said that the matter regarding ban on PTI will be presented in the cabinet meeting after the consultation.

Chairing a meeting of the federal cabinet in Islamabad today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regretted the propaganda campaign unleashed by PTI against the armed forces of Pakistan, which he said, will not be tolerated at all.

He emphasized the need to unite against such malicious campaigns, stressing that our armed forces have made immense sacrifices in the fight against terrorism to ensure peace and stability in the country.

Voicing serious concerns over the recent surge in terror acts especially in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Prime Minister said this is being done under an organized conspiracy. Referring to the involvement of TTP in terror attacks, He said the terror emanating from a neighboring country is not acceptable at all.

He said Pakistan is ready to protect its citizens. He however said Pakistan wants to address this issue through negotiations and peaceful means. He said contacts in this regard are being made directly and indirectly.

The federal government had earlier announced its plans to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and seek Article 6 proceedings against its founder Imran Khan, ex-president Dr Arif Alvi, and former deputy NA speaker Qasim Suri.

The minister added: “We are going to impose a ban on PTI and we believe that Article 17 of the Constitution gives the government the right to ban political parties, and the matter will be referred to the Supreme Court.”

PTI founder Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail, said on Wednesday that certain individuals with no understanding of social media were dishing out “digital terrorism” labels

Faced with an intensifying wave of criticism on social media, the army in May had labelled such expressions as “digital terrorism” and declared a firm commitment to combat and defeat anti-military campaigns proliferating across online platforms.

The statement that marked further stiffening of the stance of the military towards online dissent and suggested an impending crackdown against the critics had come at the end of the 83rd Formation Commanders Conference.

Over the past couple of years, social media campaigns against the army have escalated, reflecting broader tensions within the country’s political and social fabric. The government, often in tandem with the military, has responded with stringent measures aimed at controlling the narrative and stifling dissent.

These measures have led to numerous arrests and legal actions against journalists and social media users accused of disseminating “negative propaganda” against the military and the state. Additionally, there have been several instances of restricted internet access, and notable social media platforms like X have faced bans.

The military’s reaction had come against the backdrop of a post on Imran’s X account in which he urged his followers to study the Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report on the events leading to the separation of East Pakistan.

The term had featured again in the 265th Corps Commanders’ Conference earlier this month. The attendees had stressed that the “onslaught of politically motivated digital terrorism, unleashed by conspirators, duly abetted by their foreign cohorts against state institutions” was meant to induce “despondency in the nation and sow discord through peddling of blatant lies, fake news and propaganda”.

A day after the top military moot, the PTI had said that labelling free speech as “digital terrorism” would be detrimental to both the country and institutions.

Earlier this week, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif had said during a press conference that a false narrative was being propagated against the army and its leadership on social media, where “digital terrorists” were using tools such as cell phones, computers, falsehood, and propaganda to impose their will on society “akin to terrorists”.

The military spokesperson was criticised by the PTI which said the press conference was not warranted.

'PTI ban decision to go forward once institutions decide on it'

With the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) facing a potential ban, the federal government has said that the institutions will go forward with banning the former ruling party once they believe they have a strong case against the Imran Khan-founded party.

"When the [interior ministry's] institutions have [necessary] evidence and they believe that they have a strong case in light of the law and the Constitution then they can always move forward [on PTI ban]," said Iqbal while speaking to a foreign news outlet.

Last month, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led government announced its decision to ban its arch-rival PTI for its alleged involvement in the May 9 riots, which saw military installations being vandalised, and the party's former or current leaders' attempts to sabotage Pakistan's deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"The PTI and Pakistan cannot co-exist," Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar told a press conference in Islamabad, adding that the government will also file a reference against the then-prime minister, then-president Arif Alvi and then National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri under Article 6 of the Constitution — which relates to treason.

The move came after the Supreme Court's July 12 verdict where the apex court had declared the PTI eligible for reserved seats in the assemblies.

The Khan-founded party has since been "resurrected" after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notified 93 lawmakers in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh assemblies as "returned candidates" of the PTI.

However, the government then tabled the Election Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the National Assembly proposing amendments to the said legislation in order to bar lawmakers from changing their affiliation at a later stage.

As of now, the bill has been approved by the relevant Parliamentary Affairs Committee with the support of eight members.

PTI should apologise to institutions

Continuing on the ban issue, the federal minister remarked that any decision taken in this regard must be one that can survive and stand legal scrutiny and said that may this why the interior ministry's institutions might be assessing the relevant evidence in this regard.

Regardless of whether the PTI is banned or not, one thing is clear is that the party's politics is currently targeting the state's interests, he said.

"The PTI should review their behaviour and seek apology from the [state] institutions and the masses [and then] maybe a way forward can emerge for them," noted Iqbal.

Highlighting that a party cannot be banned only on the will of the government, he said that the decision was taken in light of the propaganda campaign abroad.

Amidst the looming ban, the government has offered to hold talks with the PTI, however, the party's founder Khan has instead expressed his willingness to engage with the military saying that the latter should nominate its representative in this regard.

Responding to a question regarding the government's stance on the PTI-military talks, the politician said that Khan was inviting the military to intervene in politics while simultaneously claiming to be advocating for civilian supremacy.

When asked about the contrast in the government's policy with regards to the PTI on one hand has offered to hold talks whereas on the other has announced banning the party, Iqbal said that their stance is only that Khan's party should change their conduct, apologise and there's a possibility of them returning to national politics.

Sources, claim the decision to ban a political party was not supported by the masters of Pakistan and the stakeholders in the country were given cold shoulder on it, forcing them to rethink their plan , knowing Pakistan is dependent on IMF and relies heavily on world' super powers from US to China. The SS.led weak and fake coalition govt. Is catch 22, given the massive popularity and support for oppressed party in the country.

PPP thwarted PML-N's push to ban PTI: Mandokhel

Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Qadir Mandokhel revealed that it was PPP's pushback that forced the PML-N-led government to rethink its stance on banning PTI, asserting that his party can send the ruling party packing whenever it chooses.

He claimed that PPP, a party capable of pulling the rug out from under the government's feet whenever it wishes, would not stand idly by while PML-N tried to overstep on matters of democratic principles.

He said that the information minister announcing the government's intent to ban PTI had nailed his government's colours to the mast. "Why else would PML-N leaders flip-flop on the issues. It was the pressure from PPP that had relayed its reservations over the move."

He said that, contrary to the public position, PPP does not approve of such undemocratic measures. He added that if PTI had done something, they should identify the culprit and punish them. An entire party cannot be held accountable for the actions of a few.

Regarding PPP's seemingly confused policy, he said that it was the paucity of options that was keeping the alliance together. He acknowledged that there was no denying that these general elections were rigged, but holding another election without addressing the problems would not solve anything. He stressed that it was high time for all parties to join forces and overhaul the electoral system.

He also revealed that he had been on the receiving end of election rigging.

He was punished for pursuing a case against Faisal Vawda and was pressured by the deep state to back down during an illegal detention, with the carrot of a Senate seat dangled before him.

All this manoeuvring was carried out under the orders of the then Corps Commander Peshawar Faiz Hameed.

He found it laughable to see figures like Faisal Vawda and Khawaja Asif criticize Faiz Hameed and the previous military setup. He pointed out that Khawaja Asif's 2018 election win was a gift from the outgoing military establishment.

He quipped that while most people cannot even reach an SHO in the dead of night, his highness had the clout to ring up the COAS to complain about poor election results. He also claimed that for Faisal Vawda, General (retd) Faiz personally stepped in to save him.

The PPP has played a full role in the coup. It's pretends to be Liberal to Foreign powers but it as thuggish and evil as the Nooras and it's handlers. All 3 are fished in the eyes of PK people, and can only hold onto power with guns and tanks.

PTI involved in furthering India-sponsored agenda in Pakistan, says federal minister

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has yet again censured the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), saying that the Imran Khan-founded party has been spearheading the India-sponsored agenda in the country.

The minister said this on Sunday after detained PTI's Information Secretary Raoof Hasan's contacts with an Indian journalist came to the fore. The PTI leader's contacts with the journalist of the neighbouring country had exposed the former ruling party, he added.

Hasan was arrested on July 22, the day when Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry called on the nation to stand up against militants and "digital terrorists".

The PTI leader was arrested by the Islamabad police from the party's Central Secretariat for heading a digital media cell allegedly involved in running propaganda against Pakistan and its integrity.

"The PTI digital media centre had become a centre of international disinformation, from where anti-Pakistan propaganda is run throughout the world," police said, announcing Hasan's arrest — who was later handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The same month, he was transferred to the custody of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of the police for interrogation in a terrorism case.

In his statement issued earlier today, the information minister said that the former ruling party was using its social media cell to run a campaign against the Pakistan Army, adding that the investigation [with Hasan] has unearthed how the Indians bankrolled the PTI from abroad.

Tarar called the PTI a "foreign-funded" party, saying the PTI caused harm to the country's foreign policy through a cipher. The party, he added, is using "its foreign lords" to harm national integrity.

Commenting further on the recent revelation of Hasan's contact with the Indian journalist, the politico stressed that Hasan [in his messages to the Indian journalist] mirrored his party's approach.

"The PTI's social media cell was a major source of connections with the country's enemies. Now, we can understand why the May 9 attacks were launched," he added.

The federal minister further said that the "foreign-funded coterie" had crossed all limits of animosity against the country, as the party's real objective was to damage Pakistan's national interests and its army.

Condemning the PTI, he said the Imran-founded party's followers are fulfilling the Indian agenda while living in Pakistan and they brought terrorists back to the country to complete the Indian agenda.

Tarar also said that "Faiz-Niazi-Bushra collusion" did harm the country for their nefarious designs.

The military earlier last week announced that the ex-director-general of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) General (retd) Faiz Hamid had been taken into custody over allegations of land-grabbing and snatching valuables from the owner of a private housing society, and a process of Field General Court Martial has been initiated against him.

The retired general turned out to be a pawn of the PTI founder to kick up political instability in the country, he said, adding that the 'Faiz-Niazi connection' tried to create the impression that there is some sort of rift in the military.

Balochistan Assembly passes resolution seeking ban on PTI

The session of the Balochistan Assembly was held under the chair of Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai.

PML-N Balochistan’s Parliamentary Leader and Provincial Minister for Communications Mir Saleem Khosa along with provincial ministers including Mir Sadiq Umrani, Mir Asim, and Raheela Durrani tabled the resolution for an immediate ban on what they called “political anarchist” PTI.

The resolution said that PTI tried to create chaos in the country, turning the masses against the state institutions.

The resolution noted that PTI’s “anarchist agenda” affected the country’s system while maintaining that a provincial chief minister’s efforts to open a front against the federation was equal to advancing the anti-state’s power agenda.

The resolution urged the federal government to impose an instant ban on PTI, adding “the PTI was responsible for the May 9 incident and once again carrying out violent actions”.

The assembly passed the resolution with a majority vote, while the lawmakers of opposition parties protested against the resolution, staging a walkout from the session.

Jamaat-e-Islami’s Maulana Hidayat ur Rehman Baloch, while opposing the resolution, said that MQM committed more heinous crimes than PTI, killing so many people, but this assembly did not pass any resolution to ban it.

Former Balochistan CM Nawab Aslam Raisani also opposed the resolution, demanding a level-playing political field for PTI.

Following the passage of the resolution, the speaker adjourned the session of the assembly for an indefinite period.

Resolution to ban PTI moved in Punjab Assembly

A resolution demanding a ban on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was moved in the Punjab Assembly by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s MPA Hina Pervaiz Butt.

The resolution condemned PTI’s ‘attacks’ on the Federation with organized mobs and accused the party’s leadership, including the provincial chief executive and the former first lady, of orchestrating and leading these assaults.

The resolution highlighted that rioters and miscreants injured police personnel, set vehicles ablaze, and caused extensive damage to public property.

It alleged that the attacks were part of a premeditated conspiracy to harm public lives and assets.

According to the resolution, PTI’s single-day protests caused an economic loss of PKR 190 billion. It urged immediate action, demanding that PTI, described as an extremist organization, be banned to prevent further damage.

On Thursday, the Balochistan Assembly passed with a majority vote a joint resolution of PML-N and PPP seeking an immediate ban on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

PPP against ban on political parties, says CM Sindh

His statement came after the Balochistan Assembly passed a resolution to impose a ban on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Speaking after a conference at a local hotel in Karachi, the Sindh CM took a jibe at the PTI protest in Islamabad, saying that a protest in Islamabad resembled a circus with “jokers” present.

“It seemed like a circus was staged by a particular political party, with jokers in attendance,” Murad Ali Shah said.

While he emphasised that the demand for the release of a particular individual was fundamentally wrong, he reaffirmed that the PPP opposes the banning of any political party.

A day earlier, the Balochistan Assembly passed with a majority vote a joint resolution of PML-N and PPP seeking an immediate ban on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The session of the Balochistan Assembly was held under the chair of Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai.

The Sindh chief minister mentioned the difficulties surrounding the imposition of Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stating it has become quite challenging to implement.

He recalled that discussions about the Governor’s Rule in Sindh occurred daily during the previous PTI government.

When asked about the Council of Common Interests (CCI), Murad Ali Shah expressed concern over the federal government’s failure to convene a CCI meeting, which he regarded as a constitutional necessity.

“It has been nine months since the last CCI meeting, and this is not just my concern but an issue for the entire country,” he added.

The chief minister emphasised that the water crisis cannot be addressed without a CCI meeting, explaining that no new canals are being constructed.

On the matter of Sindh’s water rights, Murad Ali Shah reiterated the PPP’s position, saying, “Not a single drop of Sindh’s water will be given to anyone. We will neither surrender our rights nor claim anyone else’s.”

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi has warned that 'imposing a ban on PTI would be a significant mistake.'

Speaking to the media during his appearance at an anti-terrorism court in Lahore, Qureshi expressed concern over reports about the potential imposition of Governor’s rule in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), calling it tantamount to sowing division and hatred within the province.

Qureshi stressed that banning PTI would not be beneficial for the country’s political landscape.

He argued that all political parties should focus on the nation's well-being, and 'attempting to crush PTI would not be in the best interest of Pakistan’s politics.'

He further criticised the government for banning other political groups such as Tehreek-e-Labbaik and Pakistan Awami Tehreek, questioning the effectiveness of such measures.

Qureshi also thanked the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Maulana Fazlur Rehman for rejecting the idea of banning PTI.

He expressed his gratitude towards Mahmood Achakzai for opposing the move as well.

Oppsoition parties opposes Gvoernor rule

Earlier on Friday, Senator Aimal Wali Khan, leader of the Awami National Party (ANP), expressed solidarity with anyone working for peace, emphasizing the deep grief within the Pashtun community over the recent Kurram incidents.

He further stated that imposing Governor's Rule in K-P would not resolve the ongoing crises in the region.
