[AUDIO] "Smith was well set and his wicket could have changed the course of the game" : Azhar Ali

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — When Mohammad Amir was helped from the field, clutching his right knee, television commentators speculated about the Pakistan paceman being sidelined for the rest of the day-night test against Australia. Possibly even the three-match series.

A half-hour later, he was back on the Gabba limbering up. It was still in the third session, day one of the first test on Thursday. Not long after that, he was handed the second new ball and bowled a torrid first over with it against Australia captain Steve Smith.

And he really deserved a wicket, getting the slightest of outside edges when Smith was on 97 — except neither Amir nor his teammates appealed for the dismissal after failing to hear a nick or see a deflection.

It was a topsy-turvy day for the left-arm fast bowler.

Amir slid in the outfield attempting to prevent a boundary from Australia's Peter Handscomb in the 70th over. He got up as the ball reached the boundary, and quickly slumped to the ground holding his knee. Amir was treated and taken from the field on a medical cart.

England fast bowler Simon Jones sustained a career-damaging knee injury while fielding in a similar area during an Ashes test at the Gabba in 2002, sparking comparisons from analysts and speculation that Amir's problem was serious.

He had troubled the Australians in the afternoon session and had figures of 1-22 from 13 overs, bowling a tight, consistent line and length to slow down the run-rate.

But just when things were looking bleak for Pakistan, Amir returned to play and was allowed to take the new ball, which he swung prodigiously under lights and had the Australians struggling.

"His knee went into the ground and we all feared it might be worse but, thank God, he recovered very quickly and came back and he's feeling much, much better," Pakistan opener Azhar Ali said.

"The good thing, he came on and bowled with the second new ball, which is a very good sign."

Amir was expected to have medical tests before play resumes Friday, but Azhar was confident his teammate would heal quickly despite limping slightly in his last spell and finishing the opening day with figures of 1-40 from 18 overs.

"He's feeling OK. I don't know how heavily he was strapped ... he must have had strapping," Azhar said.

"Definitely he's recovered very well, and he's feeling well."

Amir is in his ninth test back following an almost six-year absence for his role in a spot-fixing scandal that rocked Pakistan cricket.

More quotes from the presser

"Obviously would have been a wonderful wicket for us"

"Smith was well set and his wicket could have changed the course of the game"

"These things happen and he went on to get a hundred; if the chance had been taken things would have been different"

"We know that David Warner is a free scoring batsman so we didnt want to give any runs on the pitch as their isnt much spin on it so that's why Yasir bowled on that line in the beginning"

"No one noticed the edge (Smith) and none of our guys went up; we only got information about it later from outside sources"

"Happens sometimes that no one realizes that an edge has occurred and I guess that is a bit of luck for the batsman" : A Ali

"Tomorrow we have to come in and break this partnership as soon as we can; we didnt get the result we wanted on the 1st day but we want to change things around tomorrow"

"The pitch is very battable and its upto us how we adapt to these conditions which are different than Dubai"

350 is par on this pitch. Hope we can get the Aussies for around that score. Amir is gonna have a huge role in that. And please drop Rahat forever. Its torture watching him bowl. Sohail should have played in his place. Rahat released all the pressure that Amir and/or Yasir created. He was also very wasteful with the new ball.

You think they can get the last 7 wickets for around 62 runs?

I'm laughing at those who preferred Rahat over Sohail Khan because of his speed :))) Everyone knows Sohail is our best fast bowler in Tests at the moment and he can definitely add double figures with the bat, the other tailenders are not good enough to reach 10 runs.

Match is already gone!!!! Prepare for the next test

If thats what you believe then you shouldn't watch test cricket.

Test cricket is a battle of sessions, all you need is 2 good sessions and we are back in the game

350? That would be a miracle. We are looking at aussies declaring for around 500+ and then knocking out our top order under lights tomorrow.

They bowl at the same pace. People give this argument when talking about Imran vs Rahat when Rahat lingers at the low 130s himself. At least I'd take a Sohail Khan who'll bowl the same pace but with control and swing, same with Imran, clueless selection.

What's even funnier is that people want Amir out just because he is not ripping through the opposition. He is by far our best bowler, when you take everything into account.

It's ridiculous that they missed the edge. They are not even playing in the subcontinent where it's too much of noise and disturbances.

Lack of focus and intent? It seems Pakistan has already given up.

Rahat was selected because in theory, he'd bowl well against a slew of left-handers while Sohail has largely struggled against them - plus Sohail is a non-entity in the second innings. However, the worst of Rahat was on display yesterday - can hardly plan for a bowler to bowl filth all day long.

No one heard it. The commentators were shocked when it showed up on hot-spot.

You can't plan for it but you can be aware, anyone who has seen him bowl for a while knows that this is the normal him, the one that gets wickets comes out once in a while.

Though Pakistan's record against Australia in Australia is dismal, even in the past they have come close only to lose out on key moments like the one Azhar is mentioning here. Australia always wins in the mind

After Smith's wicket falls the insanely inexperienced lower middle order will come.

Don't rate anyone in this batting lineup apart from Warner, Smith, Khwaja and Renshaw.

500+????

You reckon Smith to get a double ton and Handscomb to get a ton??

Gabba pitch quickens on Day 2 and becomes harder to bat on. We might bat in the last session tomorrow or if we bowl good enough we could bat in the 2nd session. Surviving under lights against Starc and co. will be crucial to our chances of drawing/winning this match

Yeah I know but Sohail talks the most with his mouth, delivers big when it matters, has more control with the ball and can score more runs with his bat even though his fitness is abysmal. The results are there for everyone to see with how many wickets he's taken.

I don't want Amir out at all, he's still bowling his best. Not a terrible bowler by any means.

I may be against Azhar's style of play but man even I felt gutted when Sarf dropped that sitter off his bowling ... the epitome of our historical struggles in Australia ... the epidemic of dropping regulation catching continues and it will lead to yet another defeat in Aussie land !!

Day one went as expected with the Aussies scoring openly against our overrated attack. On day two they will pile on the runs possibly declaring one hour after tea. We'll be about three down by the close of play struggling to survive. Amir knows full well what this tour holds for us so decided to walk away injured hoping he'll be out for the entire tour.
