SHANE Warne has called on Australia selectors to stick with Aaron Finch and believes his fellow Victorian should be considered as a future Test captain.

Finch scored 62 and 49 in his maiden two Test innings against Pakistan this week after being drafted into the side at the age of 31 to bolster a batting line-up that is missing the vastly experienced Steve Smith and David Warner.

With Australia facing a heavy defeat in Dubai, Warne said the team boasts the weakest batting line-up he can remember less than a year out from the defence of the Ashes in England.

Smith, Warner and Cameron Bancroft will be eligible for selection after their suspensions for the Cricket World Cup and the Ashes and Warne expects all three to walk straight back into the side.

“We need them,” Warne said. “I think Australia’s batting at the moment is the worst I have seen it.

“I hope they stick with Aaron Finch and he continues to makes some runs, he’s someone that could captain the side.”

Just like they did in the first innings, opening duo Finch and Usman Khawaja (50) had the scoreboard ticking over and quickly closed in on another 100-run opening stand.

It was on the devil’s number (87) that disaster struck.

Finch was beaten all ends up by an inswinging delivery from Mohammad Abbas that clattered into his pads and was going on to take middle and leg stump.

Channelling his inner Shane Watson, Finch opted to review the decision which did indeed show the ball would have uprooted his stumps.

Shaun Marsh then strolled out to the crease and in the blink of an eye was sent packing after edging the final ball of Abbas’ over through to the keeper.

The nightmare wasn’t over just yet though, next up it was Mitch Marsh’s turn, but he was too slow to react and had the ball slam into his front pad.

In the space of 13 deliveries, Abbas tore away any faint hopes the Aussies had of claiming a historic victory in Dubai.

Mitch Marsh appeared to announce himself as a reliable Test player during last summer’s

Ashes with the first two centuries of his career. But after beginning March’s series in South Africa with a 96, he has scored six, four, 45, five, 16, four, 0, 12 and 0.

Shaun Marsh also tonned up twice against the Poms, but hasn’t posted a half century since, reeling off scores of 40, 33, 24, one, 26, 0, 16, seven, seven and 0.

Khawaja and debutant Travis Head thankfully steadied the ship a little and saw out the remainder of the day’s play as Australia made their way to 3/136.

The reputation of Smith, Warner and Bancroft has taken a battering both in Australia and internationally following the sandpaper incident during the fourth Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Warne conceded they will still need to demonstrate contrition, but insists selectors have little choice but to get them back in the side as soon as they are available.

“It takes time and they are going to need to earn the respect of the cricket community from around the world,” he said.

“They need to get back the respect of the Australian public and that will only take time. It depends on how they come back and conduct themselves.

“But if they come back and make some hundreds then all will be forgotten and we’ll be saying how much we missed them.

“Warner and Smith will definitely get back in Bancroft too and if you add them to (Usman) Khawaja and Shaun Marsh the batting line-up looks a lot better.”

Categorically the worst. It was terrible in the mid-eighties, but at least they had Border then.

will be interesting if they somehow managed to secure a draw

It would be one of the greatest fighting draws in history but imo even with the great Aussie batting line up of the 2000's they would lose tommorow.

Of course with Warner and Smith out of the team it's a different skilled line up, any team would miss them two. But Australia wont take long to find another batting talent, it's what they do.

Maybe on paper but they have tremendous fighting spirit. When was the last time Australia drew on day 5 in both India, Pakistan (UAE) in a span of 1.5 years?

Ranchi 2017
Dubai 2018

Well done Aussies.

The return of Smith and Warner will help. Australia will be back. Never underestimate Australia.

have you got anything to say now? lol :rp

Yes, it was a great batting performance by Aus to save this match and esp from Usman who played brilliantly. Pakistan should have won but failed with two wickets remaining. The draw was 10-1 but let me guess you knew Aus would save the match? What are the lottery numbers for next week pal?

bro i quoted you just because you sounded wayy to confident and its funny to look back to your comments after the match has been done. "but imo even with the great Aussie batting line up of the 2000's they would lose tommorow. " Kind of like how Mcgregor sounded before his fight with Khabib. :broad:maqsood

Everyone should have been confident. Bookies had Pakistan strong favourites at something like 10-1. It was a huge shock to see Australia secure a draw but it's the beauty of sport, shocks do happen. Khabib beating Conor wasn't a shock, he was favourite.

I would say that Pakistan's is probably on a par with Australia's, which is quite worrying.

What I meant was you sounded overconfident and arrogant just like Mcgregor before the match.

Shaun Marsh is out of confidence. Decent batsman and should be in playing x1 even with Smith and Warner in the side.

Shaun Marsh has always been the Australian Asad Shafiq

To be frank once Smith and Renshaw are back, this batting will become decent again. Khawaja is good, Finch has shown that he can be a good Test batter, Head is a good player as well. When Renshaw & Smith get back, Finch will drop down to the middle order and Smith with take his number 3 spot. Shaun Marsh needs to go immediately as he is past his expiry date. If he had done decently, he would have played India Tests, but now he has no chance.

Khawaja, Renshaw, Smith, Head, Finch, M Marsh, Paine, Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins, Lyon.

The above will be the future Australia X1 and it will be fantastic at home and can do decent everywhere. James Pattinson is back as well and he just scored a hundred with the bat.

Does Warner make your team giri26 ?

Does Warner make your team giri26 ?

I personally don't want him back in the X1 but again, it seems like he will be. If he does, then one of the batters will have to give way. If Renshaw does well from now to when the banned duo return, I don't see a spot for him. Finch has already proven that he is more than just a dasher and he can play spin well. So he needs to stay. M Marsh is another one who might eventually get dropped if he does not do well in the home season but will Aussie selectors drop a player whom they have named as the Vice-Captain just now?

Smith and Warner won't help Aus much outside Aus, they will be smashed away anyway. In fact all away teams get smashed out, test cricket has become completely noncompetitive.

Pretty sure I'd pick a guy with 6000 Test runs @48 in my current Aussie lineup over ANY other opener in the country. In fact I'd pick him anywhere in the top 7 over anyone in our current lineup. But fair enough.

He does struggle in Asia but I'd back him to figure out how to make runs at this stage of his career.

Congrats to Pakistan on a terrific series win, well played - just to good. Was disappointed not to see Warne as a commentator in the series.

I don't follow Aus domestic but Aussies used to have those domestic stalwarts averaging in 50s so it should not be a big concern bringing them into the side till Warmer and Smith are banned.

Once Warner & Smith return

David Warner
Usman Khawaja
Steven Smith
Aaron Finch
Travis Head
Marnus Labuschange (?)
Tim Paine (c & wk)
Mitchell Starc
Pat Cummins
Nathan Lyon
Josh Hazlewood

Australia k waqai buray din chal rahay hain.

I mean their batting has gone down from Langer - Hayden - Ponting - Clarke - Hussey - Martyn - Gilchrist to this.

People who used to watch Cricket in the 70's and 80's cannot believe the depth's to which the West Indies have fallen

I would say that Pakistan's is probably on a par with Australia's, which is quite worrying.

No chance this Australia side would draw in England. Indeed they haven't done so for nearly 20 years. We are better.

Once Smith is back they will be fine. Handscomb and Renshaw are very talanted batsmen as well. Australia will be back.

Shane Warne has dismissed Australia's struggling Test side as "ordinary" and said they needed a "kick up the backside" after their series flop against Pakistan. Australia suffered a 373-run defeat against Pakistan in the second of the two-Test series last week after a familiar batting collapse, following a fightback to secure a draw in the first Test. "It's been pretty ordinary, hasn't it?" the Australian spin legend told reporters on Monday. "We all support the Aussie side as we do but they need a kick up the backside at the moment because they're not performing well." Warne also took aim at Mitchell Marsh, questioning why he was selected as vice-captain.

"I hadn't even thought before that series that he had established himself in the team," Warne said. "I don't think he's cemented a spot and that's why it was a strange selection for me as vice-captain. "He only averages 25 or 26 in Test cricket."

The outspoken cricket great said he was a "huge fan" of the Marsh brothers Mitchell and Shaun, but that "they need to perform".

"Mitchell Marsh needs to go and make some runs," he added.

"If Mitchell Marsh comes out and makes some hundreds, pick him. If Shaun Marsh makes some hundreds, pick him. If they don't, then pick the guys who are in form."

Warne told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday that cricket in Australia left reeling by a ball-tampering scandal earlier this year, was struggling and needed to return to its grassroots.

"I think in any business you need the foundation to be strong, and the foundation of Australian cricket has always been grassroots cricket, club cricket, and first-class cricket, Sheffield Shield cricket," he said.

"I don't think there are enough first-class cricketers getting into school cricket and inspiring people and talking to young boys and girls to say cricket's a great game and this is why teaching them techniques.

"It just doesn't happen anymore."

S. Marsh is the very definition of a TFF. I don't care if he score Shield runs again. He shouldn't be picked.

M. Marsh scores tons at Shield level but looks like going the same way as his brother- just not a consistent run scorer at Test level, despite some talent. He's probably worth one more shot at some stage but not for a year or so. Let him play some County cricket and churn out consistent runs there first.

I actually agree with Warne on grass roots cricket.

Smith and Warner won't help Aus much outside Aus, they will be smashed away anyway. In fact all away teams get smashed out, test cricket has become completely noncompetitive.

Pak hasn't been smashed in England the last few times. Also won a series in WI finally.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has today announced that Shane Warne has been appointed to its World Cricket committee.

Former Australia leg-spinner Warne, regarded as one of the greatest bowlers of all time, accepted the invitation to join the committee, which meets twice a year to discuss the most important issues in the game and acts as an independent voice in world cricket.

Warne enjoyed a distinguished international career with Australia, becoming the first bowler to reach 700 Test wickets, with his tally of 708 standing second on the all-time list.

He played 145 Tests for Australia, making his debut against India at Sydney in 1992 and bowing out 15 years later at the same venue in the final match of the Ashes series in 2006-07. Aside from his Test achievements, he took 293 wickets in 194 One-Day Internationals, and is one of only two bowlers to have taken over 1,000 international wickets across all formats of the game.

Warne spent five seasons in English county cricket with Hampshire, and captained the side between 2004 and 2007. He officially retired from all formats of the game in 2013 following stints in Australia’s Big Bash and the Indian Premier League, but returned to captain the Rest of the World XI against MCC at Lord’s to celebrate the Bicententary of the Ground in 2014. He was made an Honorary Life Member of MCC in 2009.

Warne takes up his position on the World Cricket committee as a replacement for his fellow Australian Rod Marsh, who has stepped down after serving on the committee since 2012.

Warne said: “It is an honour to have been asked to be a member of the MCC World Cricket committee. It is an extremely exciting time for cricket and I hope that I will have plenty to offer in discussion and debate. I look forward to contributing to the work of the committee.”
Mike Gatting, Chairman of the MCC World Cricket committee, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome Shane on to the committee. Obviously his profile in the world game is as big as they come and with his extensive experience, I am sure he will offer great insights into many different facets of the game.

“I’d also like to pay tribute to Rod Marsh, who leaves the committee after six years. He has provided valuable contributions across a variety of areas and we thank him for his efforts.”

One of the key outcomes of the MCC World Cricket committee’s last meeting, which was held at Lord’s in August, included the suggestion that pace of play needs further scrutiny, with the idea of adopting a “shot clock” to help speed up play.

Since it was formed in 2006, the MCC World Cricket committee has made recommendations which have resulted in the introduction of pink ball day/night cricket in the Test match arena, the universal adoption of DRS across the international game, and a limit placed on the size of bats to help the balance between bat and ball.
