Australian ODI squad for the Qantas Tour of India; Peter Siddle joins Test squad

The National Selection Panel (NSP) has named the following 14-player Australian squad for the Qantas Tour of India from January 14-19.

Australia:

Aaron Finch (c) (Victoria)
Sean Abbott (New South Wales)
Ashton Agar (Western Australia)
Alex Carey (vc) (South Australia)
Pat Cummins (vc) (New South Wales)
Peter Handscomb (Victoria)
Josh Hazlewood (New South Wales)
Marnus Labuschagne (Queensland)
Kane Richardson (South Australia)
Steven Smith (New South Wales)
Mitchell Starc (New South Wales)
Ashton Turner (Western Australia)
David Warner (New South Wales)
Adam Zampa (South Australia)

National Selector Trevor Hohns said: “Similar to the Test team, we are wanting the white ball squad to continue the form of the unbeaten T20 Series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

“The performance of our white ball squads has been strong, and we are hoping to build the momentum towards the T20 World Cup at home at the end of the year and ultimately build towards the 2023 ICC World Cup in India.

“The performance of the top order at home through the T20 Series was very strong so we look for that to continue in the Indian ODI series. We also believe Marnus Labuschagne is ready for his international white ball debut after his strong form for Queensland in this form of the game.

“Ashton Turner has proven himself in India with his ability to adapt to local conditions as did Peter Handscomb who joined the squad at the most recent World Cup. Peter also doubles as a backup keeper if required while Ashton Agar adds to the squad with his all-round abilities.

“In terms of the bowling group we are sticking with combination that are performing well. Sean Abbott and Kane Richardson are in the squad following the successful T20 campaign.

“Adam Zampa and his growing combination with Agar is also something the selectors want to see more of while Nathan Lyon remains in the one-day squad selection frame.

“It is great to see Glenn Maxwell returning to the game in the Big Bash League. We will closely monitor his form after what would have been disappointing 12 months in the one-day game by his standards.”

Australia’s Senior Assistant Coach Andrew McDonald will lead the group to India. Head Coach Justin Langer will remain in Australia having spent the majority of the last 18 months away from home.

“As one of the leadership group it’s important to show that not only are we focussed on getting the balance right for the players but equally the coaches and staff, head coach included,” Langer said.

“Macca is an exceptional coach in all forms of the game and has been fantastic since coming on board. He will do a great job with this squad. We are in very, very good hands.”

Qantas Tour of India:

January 14: First ODI Australia v India, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
January 17: Second ODI Australia v India, Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot
January 19: Third ODI Australia v India, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru

It was also announced today Victorian paceman Peter Siddle will be brought into the 13-man squad for the injured Josh Hazlewood for the Boxing Day Test against New Zealand at the MCG.

Hohns: “Peter has been brought in as a 13th player for Melbourne. He is a proven Test match performer with an exceptional knowledge of the MCG which will be a valuable part of our preparation.”

If West Indies can give India a tough time in India, then I would think Australia should do the same - good squad this.

Australia won their last ODI series in India in 2019, and that too with a depleted team. India is overrated in ODI's. They lack fire power in their side full of under 100 strike rate players. That's why they can't compare to England, who's top order careless about scoring hundreds and more about winning games by batting quickly.
Unfortunately Maxwell isn't here.

India Squad ODI aganist Australia:

Virat Kohli (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Navdeep Saini, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah.

Don't like Jadhav, Pandey and Thakur in squad. Should have included someone else in place of these 3.

Dhawan and Bumrah coming back is good news. However, with KL Rahul in the form he is in, will be interesting to see what will be the final XI. If Rahul gets bumped to #4 it might impact severely impact his performances.

At the current stage, I will take Rahul as an opener over Dhawan.

India will then take on Australia in a three-match ODI series against Australia.
The first ODI will be played on January 14 in Mumbai.
The remaining two matches will be played on January 17 and 19.

Don’t think too order of india is into 100 etc . The middle order was really fragile

With shreyas pant pandya and jadeja it’s now a v v good middle order . India with shreyas at 4 pandya at 5 and bumrah will be hard to beat

D’Arcy Short joins Australian ODI squad for Qantas Tour of IndiaD’Arcy Short has been added to the Australian squad for the upcoming Qantas Tour of India from January 14-19.

Short has been brought into the squad for Sean Abbott, who suffered a moderate side strain playing for the Sydney Sixers against the Sydney Thunder during Friday’s KFC Big Bash League match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

National Selector Trevor Hohns said: “It is extremely unfortunate for Sean who is very much a part of our white ball squad plans leading into the ICC T20 World Cup and the World Cup.

“D’Arcy offers the squad another spinning all-rounder option along with Ashton Agar, which along with the four world class fast bowlers and Adam Zampa balances the squad out nicely. His proven record and ability to bat anywhere in the order will also be a great asset to the squad.”

Abbott is expected to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks.

Short again  He can’t play spin to save his life.

Would’ve been better off going with McDermott or Phillipe.

Labuschagne better not make his odi debut.
He will take handscombs place.
Handscomb is a high quality batsman who now won't make the test team..

But he is australias best odi batsman after smith Smith and Warner.

Really good player of spin as well

Australia Head Coach Justin Langer to Skip India Tour, Andrew McDonald to Take Charge

Justin Langer, the Australia head coach, will not be travelling with the ODI side to India taking a short break from a busy international schedule. In his absence, assistant coach Andrew McDonald will take the charge of the national squad, the first time he would do so in his coaching career.

“I said to him this morning, ‘we’re not reinventing the wheel’. He’s got a really good opportunity,” Langer was quoted as saying by The Sydney Morning Herald. “I’m so confident in our coaching staff now with the cricket side of things. A lot of the time now I think about the cricket 30 per cent of the time, the rest of the time all the other stuff that goes with it: the bigger picture, the cultural stuff.”

Australia will be in India for a short tour comprising three ODIs starting January 14. Langer said he has full faith in McDonald. “He’s an excellent coach, we’ve got other excellent coaches to back him up. I said to him I won’t ring him, I’ll let him go. He said ‘I might ring you’, that’s the difference. He’ll do a really good job,” he said.

Australia recently completed a 3-0 clean sweep of New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home. After their whit-ball fixtures against India, South Africa and New Zealand, Australia will fly down to Bangladesh for two-match Test series in June-July.

Langer said he’s going to maintain ‘continuity’ in the Test squad meaning the struggling opener Joe Burns will be given a long rope to prove himself. “In the spirit of that continuity it’d be hard to break up that squad. We might add an all-rounder and another spinner because we’re going to get spinning conditions. I’m having a few weeks off so I’ll worry about selection for Bangladesh [later],” he said.

Nothing tougher than playing India in India: Marnus Labuschagne

Considered another Australian legend in making, young batsman Marnus Labuschagne is keen to test his skills against India, which he says is the toughest place to travel on a cricket assignment. Labuschagne, 25, had a remarkable Test summer during which he scored four hundreds in five Tests, including a double century against New Zealand in the just-concluded third Test, which Australia won by 279 runs. As the focus shifts from the red to white ball format, Labuchagne is gearing up for a tough test after being named in the Australian squad for the three-match series, starting January 14 in Mumbai.

“Whenever you play India, it’s a tough series because they’re a very tough opposition. They’ve got great batters and bowlers, so it’s going to be a challenge,” Labuschagne was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia website. “But as a player you always want to test yourself against the best opposition in the toughest conditions, and there’s nothing tougher than India in India.”

Just 14 Tests old, Labuschagne is likely to claim the third position on the ICC Test rankings, behind India’s Virat Kohli and his compatriot Steve Smith. He has already drawn comparisons with these modern-day greats but Labuschagne played down the plaudits.

“For people to speak like that is amazing, but there’s a lot more work to be done before anything like that can be talked about,” he said. “Kane Williamson, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith - those guys have been doing it for five, six, seven years. To have one good summer doesn’t make you a great player. So for me it’s about trying to be consistent and trying to get Australia to win games.”

Labuschagne, who toured India with an Australia A side in 2018, said he would pick brains of his teammates who have travelled to that country for IPL and many international tours. “If I get an opportunity that’d be great. Luckily I have a wealth of experience there with Aaron Finch, David Warner, Steve Smith … to continue to learn from those guys is great.” Labuschagne said competing in Sydney where conditions favoured spinners was a good preparation before the India tour.

“It’s probably good preparation coming from (playing on the SCG) going to India… that’s probably the closest we have in Australia to spinning conditions. But with the format change, and the wickets will be different.

“I’ve got a lot of experience to lean on with guys who have played five, six, seven years of IPL and Test tours over there for Australia, so there’s a lot to learn.” The second match of the series will be played in Rajkot on January 17 while the third and final ODI will be played in Bengaluru on January 19.

he means test cricket.

in odi we gave lost to australia and even south africa as before since 2010. Actually we even lost to pakistan in 2012. annne do.

Australia has the goods to give Virat Kohli's men a run for their money, skipper Aaron Finch said on Thursday as he departed for their three-match one-day series.

The two sides face each other in Mumbai on January 14 before heading to Rajkot and then Bangalore for what will be Australia's first limited-overs games since the World Cup in England last year.

Both sides made the semifinals and Finch believes Australia is well-equipped to deal with India on home soil after upsetting it 3-2 there early last year.

“It just gives us confidence that our game plan in those conditions is good enough,” he told cricket.com.au ahead of his departure.

“What can happen when you play in the sub-continent is you start to doubt your game plan because they're so dominant when they get on top.

“India or Pakistan... or Sri Lanka. They can make you start doubting yourself.

“Knowing that our game plan is good enough and knowing that our skills are good enough to beat India in India. That gives us a lot of confidence going there.”

Stand-in coach

Regular coach Justin Langer is giving the tour a miss after an intense summer of Test cricket with the reins handed to his assistant Andrew McDonald.

McDonald has had a rapid rise. He was playing in the Twenty20 Big Bash four years ago before turning to coaching and being appointed Langer's right-hand man in October.

“He's got great credentials and he'll keep growing. He's got a really good opportunity,” Langer told reporters this week.

“I said to him: 'we're not reinventing the wheel'. I won't ring him, I'll let him go.

“He said 'I might ring you'. He'll do a really good job.”

Australia has radically overhauled its squad for the series with in-form batsman Marnus Labuschagne, fresh from an incredible Test summer against Pakistan and New Zealand, set to make his one-day international debut.

“We know that he's not going to be overawed by the occasion,” Finch said of their new star.

Spinner Ashton Agar gets another chance 18 months after his last one-dayer and paceman Josh Hazlewood has been recalled after recovering from injury to once again partner Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

There was no room for high-profile players such as Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Lyon.

Australian pace spearhead Pat Cummins expects spinners to play an important role in the ODI series against India even though he is not expecting dust-bowls during a limited-overs series.

The series begins in Mumbai on January 14, followed by the second and third match in Rajkot on January 17 and Bengaluru on January 19 respectively.

“I think spinners play a bigger part in India than they do around the world but it’s rare you get a big spinning dust bowl for a one day international,” Cummins told reporters ahead of Australia’s departure.

Australia made a brilliant comeback to win the five-match ODI series 3-2 in India last year after trailing 0-2.

“The last series I think we played two spinners, they also played two so they are certainly important, especially in the middle overs,” Cummins said.

Australia is travelling with two specialist spinners -- left-arm spinner Ashton Agar and leg spinner Adam Zampa. Talking about the tracks in India, the 26-year-old Cummins said the ball gets softer as the game progresses which makes it easier to bowl as compared to other countries. But playing in smaller, faster fields come with their own set of challenges.

“Upfront, there’s always a little bit in it with a new ball like anywhere else in the world. But then after that, I feel that the ball gets probably a little bit softer and chewed up more over there (India) than it does in other parts of the world which makes it a little bit easier sometimes bowling with a bit of a softer ball.”

“But it’s just a different challenge, the fields there are a lot smaller and faster than here in Australia, the wickets aren’t as pacey and bouncy but it’s the same format just a slightly different beast,” he added.

Australia captain Aaron Finch expects a keen contest between the team's top Test run-getter over the summer and India's gun bowler during their ODI tour of the subcontinent.

Australia are set to play three ODIs in India on 14, 17 and 19 January, and Marnus Labuschagne, who accumulated nearly 900 runs during the home Test season, is in with a chance to prove himself in the 50-over game.

Finch, the limited-overs skipper, is confident that Labuschagne, whose recent feats have seen him rise from No.98 before the Ashes to No.3 on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings for batsmen, can carry forward that form to ODIs.

"We know that he’s not going to be overawed by the occasion," he told the media on Friday, 10 January. "He has come back into Test cricket after missing out at the start of the Ashes and he has been unbelievable, so hopefully he can continue that.

"The improvement we have seen in Marnus' game over the last 12 months has been huge and that has been reflected in his scores and the impact that he is having in Test matches."

The skipper is counting on the top-order batsman to counter the threat of spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, the No.1 ODI bowler in the world. "Yes, that [contest] is going to be exciting," he said.

Finch was all praise for Bumrah, but cautioned his batsmen not to "overplay" his impact. "[Bumrah] is a fantastic bowler and someone, who, when you are not playing against him, you love watching bowl," he said. "He is fast and aggressive and his execution is pretty spot on. The more the guys face him, the more exposure you get, the more you start to understand how he bowls. So it is important that we don’t overplay that too much."

Australia enjoyed a strong tour of India last year, when they came back from behind to take the ODI series 3-2. Now, after sweeping Pakistan and New Zealand in the Tests and claiming the limited-overs games against Pakistan as well, Finch is keen to carry their winning run to away shores.

“It’s important that we come here and continue the good form we have had for the last few months," he said. "There has been a lot of wins, one big challenge is to continue and keep improving especially in the away conditions. Most teams in the world are now very comfortable playing at home. For us, to go away and continue to win and challenge the best teams in the world on a regular basis is really important to us."

Just for 3 ODIs they are coming here. Ridiculous. Australia is not a associate nation. But money drives everything.

It will be interesting to see how Labuschange does. This is the test for him. How he does outside of his comfort zone will give us a better reflection of his ability and future status in the game.

Ashton Agar has been talked about having an important role in this series. So his performances will be interesting to watch. He hasn't done much since the 2013 ashes game against England.

What a waste of a series... Just for 3 ODI.... Quick Money making bonanza, nothing else..

Don't have enough time to play more than 3 matches in such short period as the Newzealand series is around the corner! India is going there on 21st January and the 3rd ODI against Australia is on 19th January!

India and Australia play each other every year. Top 2 teams in the world and generally competitive series. Meh. Good for us fans I suppose.

Aussie board apparently didn't want send their team here in January but BCCI refused to change the dates iirc. BBL is at business end and Aussies are still cooling down from feasting on kiwis.

BCCI, Why u gotta flex at useless things?

India tours Australia right in the middle of Indian season in Dec Jan.

They are also going to tour Australia in 2020,after 2018, thats going to be a massive financial gain for CA.

So CA got to adjust too.

“Nobody can say be played an inferior Australia side” : Ravi Shastri

“Nobody can say we played an inferior Australia side,” said head coach Ravi Shastri, taking an obvious dig at critics who did not rate highly India’s Test series win Down Under last year.

Shastri’s comments came after India wrapped the home ODI series against full-strength Australia.

Skipper Virat Kohli had led India to its first ever Test series win on Australia soil but it had come in the absence of key batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith, who were serving bans after being indicted in a ball-tampering scandal.

Critics said the win came when Smith and Warner were not there to challenge India. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had also said even Kohli knows that the away Test series win in 2019 was not against a full-strength Australia .

“This team, the boys showed great character. Nobody can say we played an inferior Australia side. They got a thrashing in Mumbai, and then to win two games, with all the travel, and with Australia winning all three tosses,” Shastri said after India’s seven-wicket win in the decisive third match.

But both Smith and Warmer were in the Australian line-up for this ODI series, which India claimed 2-1 after losing the series-opener in Mumbai.

Shastri said key to India’s win was picking “important wickets in the middle overs.”

Eulogising the players in his side, Shastri said each one of them is good enough to be in the playing XI.

“They realised once they got off to a start, that this Australian attack will always look for wickets. Each of those 11 will always look to get in the door if they get a foot in,” he said.

“Virat and Rohit batted well, and Shreyas will get a lot of confidence from this innings.”

Shastri was full of praise for his bowlers, saying the rival batsmen can’t take much freedom against them in the death overs.

“If sides are looking to take us apart in the last 10 overs, then we have a lot of variety. The game might be 130 years old, but that [the yorker] is still the best ball in the world,” Shastri said referring to the block-hole delivery which the Indians used very effectively and consistently against the Australians in this series.

“The exposure they (youngsters) get against this Australian outfit will stand them in good stead. Their mindset will be entirely different. Young Saini is quick, and if he gets it right, he’ll tickle a few. Really proud of the guys - I thought they were magnificent,” he signed off.

This has become a problem for Shastri and Kohli , they care too much about what the others say, this is good in way when likes of Kohli had to improve his test batting for England but am not sure it’s healthy..seems more conflictual..

Right. Because Maxwell was setting the world on fire in the World Cup. Maxwell only bullies Pakistan in the UAE and that's it. This victory for India is impressive. Only England could have done this to a full strength OZ side.

Answering a thread of [MENTION=65183]freelance_cricketer[/MENTION] about the Australian ODI line up in this series and in general.

The fast bowling attack was full strength in the 3rd ODI.
Both ODI teams are pretty much on the same level so having another bowler in the place of those already present wouldn't have changed much.

Problem was Australia's lower midle order number 5, 6 and 7 : Carey, Turner and Agar. That's a joke. No list A hundred and even just 19 fifties in 140 List A innings.
Not discrediting India's win as I think currently India can win against any Australian XI and Australia can also win against any Indian XI but Australia will be a lot better team by changing this lower midle order quickly.
Maxwell is a must.
The wicket keeper : Carey is just ok. I think they should look for the future and if they play Smith and Labu at 3/4 they can afford to play Josh Philippe somewhere in the line up.

Personally I think they should try Maxwell/Mitch Marsh as a 5th bowler and Labu/Head as 6th.

A stronger australian line up, according to me, will be:

1. David Warner/Aaron Finch
2. Josh Philippe (wk)
3. Steven Smith
4. Marnus Labu
5. Travis Head
6. Glen Maxwell
7. Mitchell Marsh
8. Mitchell Starc
9.Adam Zampa
10. Patt Cummins
11. Josh Hazlewood

I don't rate Warner/Finch very highly despite the numbers. But Australia want to keep them, you can have Philippe at 5 and both of them opening.
That line up give them plenty of spin bowling options in case the find themselves on a turner.
Jye Richardson should always be in the ODI squad and tried soon to see if he can make a place in the XI.

Right. Because Maxwell was setting the world on fire in the World Cup. Maxwell only bullies Pakistan in the UAE and that's it. This victory for India is impressive. Only England could have done this to a full strength OZ side.

Only bilateral series that mattered in a long time, would love to face Eng too..

Yes. And , for a change, Australia sent their full strength ODI squad as well. The quality of cricket was very good even though this particular series had no context whatsoever.

btw the only reason australia even won the odi series the year before was cause pannauti pant played the last 2 games as keeper. When he plays as a pure batsman, india don't lose. When he is playing as pannauti keeper then india lose games.

The moment pannauti pant keeper dint play india won both games vs australia.

pant should either play as a pure batsman and give up keeping or not play.
